May's notable games...

Lajoie Sizzles -- Smokes Americans for 5 Hits The Philadelphia Athletics tripped up the Boston Americans, 6-3. The Athletics were led by Nap Lajoie, their 29-year-old second baseman. Philadelphia Athletics (12-7) over Boston Americans (7-12) May 16th, 1904 Lush Cracks 5 Hits It was a good day for the Cardinals at League Park as they clipped the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-4. It was tremendous day for Johnny Lush, who was on a hitting barrage at the plate, finishing 5-for-5. "I don't know what to call that," the St. Louis first baseman told reporters after his big performance. "I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' I just try to keep it simple. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then I hit it. Today I picked up the spin pretty well." Johnny Lush hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th. This year, Lush has socked 31 hits in 111 at-bats for a .279 average with 1 home run. He is getting on base at a .341 pace and his totals also include 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored. St. Louis Cardinals (13-17) over Philadelphia Phillies (15-13) |

July's notable games...
July 5th, 1904
2,000th Hit for Kelley Brooklyn's Joe Kelley got the standing ovation -- but the Boston Beaneaters got the win. It was a special day for him at South End Grounds. A day when Kelley notched hit #2,000 of his career. The fans went wild when he did. Even the Beaneaters fans applauded. The Superbas first baseman went 1-for-3 in a losing cause as Boston spoiled the party with the 5-3 victory. In the postgame interview, a downhearted Kelley told the media, "We lost -- It's not about individual accomplishments -- we lost." When pressed further, he admitted his pride in reaching the 2,000-hit mark, "A lot of great players never get there. I'm proud, but I would be happier if we had won." Lifetime, Kelley has played in 1,604 games, batted .321 with 58 home runs and 2,000 base hits. Boston Beaneaters (30-41) over Brooklyn Superbas (28-44) |

August's notable games...
August 13th, 1904
Phillies Win Nail-Biter Chicago first baseman Frank Chance was sensational. He went 5-5 with 2 doubles, 3 singles, and a walk, while scoring 3. But it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Philadelphia beat the Cubs, 7-6, in 10 innings. The Phillies saw their record improve to 48-58. The climactic moment came in the bottom of the tenth for Philadelphia. That's when Mike Grady, who is tied for 4th in the NL with a .479 slugging percentage, hit a run-scoring double off Tully Sparks to win the game. The home crowd erupted in celebration. "It's great to see the crowd jacked up," Grady said. Philadelphia Phillies (48-58) over Chicago Cubs (63-43) |

Howell, the Highlanders right-hander, threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. Howell allowed no runs over 9 innings. He also racked up 6 strikeouts. "We're happy," Howell told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Polo Grounds in New York. Highlanders lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 14th, 1904, the Polo Grounds Raucous Polo Grounds Crowd Propels Giants to 4-2 Victory; Series Tied at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Case Patten, the New York Giants topped the New York Highlanders by the score of 4-2 and got their first win in the 1904 World Series. Patten threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball for the Giants. The win moves New York into a 1-1 tie with New York. Patten, who was born in Westport, Connecticut, threw 107 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 2 runs. "Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Patten after the game. The next game is set to be played for October 16th, 1904 at Hilltop Park in New York. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 16th, 1904, Hilltop Park Road Win Lifts New York to 2-1 Lead in WS The New York Giants got an exceptional performance from starter Dummy Taylor, who silenced the New York offense en route to a 3-0 shutout win in Game 3 of the World Series. The Highlanders could never get a bead on the right-handed Taylor, who threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. The Giants now hold a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-7 series. Taylor delivered a quality start for New York. The 6-foot-1 right-hander allowed no earned runs on 7 hits over 9 innings of work. "We're one game closer to our goal," New York manager George Davis said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hilltop Park in New York. Warner went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times for the Giants, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 1. Warner had an important at-bat with the bases empty in the top of the seventh, when he hit a solo home run. The Giants went on to win. "We aren't quitting," New York manager John McGraw said. "Yeah, the odds are definitely in their favor, but they've got to earn it." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hilltop Park in New York. Giants lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 18th, 1904, Hilltop Park Highlanders Clip Giants, 4-3, in WS Contest Bill Bernhard was not about to watch an opponent celebrate a championship on his home field. The win cuts the series deficit for the Highlanders to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series. A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the tenth, an error by the Giants allowed the Highlanders to score the winning run. "Coach said he wanted eight innings, so I decided to do him one better," Bernhard said later. Game 6 is scheduled for Thursday at the Polo Grounds in New York. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions." The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. April's notable games...
April 15th, 1905
Brooklyn's Dahlen Reaches 2,000 Hits "It would have been a lot nicer if my 2,000th hit had won the game," said Bill Dahlen after the Brooklyn Superbas had been tripped up by the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-2, spoiling his big day. The Superbas shortstop gained access to the exclusive 2,000-hit club by going 1-for-4 in the game played at Washington Park. "The standing ovation by the fans is not something I will ever forget," Dahlen said to the press after the game. "I think even the Phillies fans were cheering me." During his career, Dahlen has compiled a .287 batting average and collected 2,000 hits, 67 home runs, and 958 RBIs. Philadelphia Phillies (1-1) over Brooklyn Superbas Last edited by Lord Byron; 03-18-2024 at 09:15 PM. |
