There are just 9 games left in the season and another no hitter happened. Lefty Grove who is having a breakout season did it for the Richmond Gamecocks over the Lubbock Brigands. Grove struck out 16 batters in the win and was supported by Ron Theobald's 3 RBI's as well as 3 hit games by Paul Waner and Henry Rodriguez. This was the first no hitter in Richmond history and first time Lubbock has been no hit. Richmond is still alive in the AL Atlantic as they are tied for 2nd with the Baltimore Orioles but are 7 games behind the San Juan Storm.

The Utah Saints are on the verge of clinching the AL West and to defend their 2023 World Series crown, however an ugly incident in the locker room where September callup Baby Doll Jacobsen called out Yasiel Puig for his lack of enthusiasm. Puig took exception and punched Jacobsen which leads to Puig being suspended 5 games. Puig is having a tremendous rookie season for Utah. Jacobsen has lit up the minors but has not been able to produce at the major league level.

Josh Thompson who was having a decent year for the Evansville Steelhawks is now out for the year with bone chips in his elbow. Thompson threw 4 pitches and had to leave the contest as Evansville defeated the Reno Armada 8-1.

New 9/7/24

Two more teams are in the postseason as the defending World Champion Utah Saints clinched the AL West title with a strange 21 inning 3-2 win over the Nassau Stingrays at the Atlantis Hotel. Game was won with a 21st inning sacrifice fly by Starlin Castro.

The New York Mets have also clinched their spot in the postseason and have not clinched the NL East yet but have a magic number of 1 on the Riverhead Racers

San Juan Storm got bad news when their solid shortstop and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy found out that after being originally diagnosed with a torn groin muscle and a 6 week return is now out for the year and needs surgery. This injury happened in a game where San Juan destroyed the Foxwoods Colonials 14-5. Tweedy was quoted as saying "this pain was worse than the girl that fell in love with the heavy metal drummer"

Also injury on a contending team, the Portland Lions lost David Green for the season with elbow injury suffered in a critical 5-3 loss to the lowly Cheyenne Black Aces. Green is a platoon player so it does not hurt as much as they are 5 games out in the wildcard race.

News 9/8/24

Some champagne was poured today and there was a 1 hit masterpiece thrown by Dean Chance in a meaningless 1-0 win on the road for the Spokane Gangsters over the Evansville Steelhawks. Chance fanned 15 batters and continued his dominance in the American League allowing just one 7th inning single to Jim Lyttle. Spokane's offense was pretty much 2 hits by Harry "The Hat' Walker and a sac fly by Larry Hisle. Spokane improved to 78-79 on the season.

Champagne ran amok as the Oakland Athletics, New York Mets and Sacramento Bees won their divisions and the Tulsa Rattlers clinched playoff berth but not division yet. For Oakland they have been to the World Series before losing in 2019 to the Washington Nationals. There list trip to the playoffs was 2021 losing in the wildcard game to the Houston Astros

For the New York Mets, they have choked in the final weeks in prior seasons and last saw the playoffs in 2020 losing wildcard game to Miami Marlins.

Tulsa Rattlers will make their first ever postseason appearance, while the Sacramento Bees will return after making their debut in 2023 but got swept in the first round by the Cincinnati Reds.

There are just 3 games left which means one series to go, with a huge injury to report.

The Oakland Athletics got a pyrrhic victory over the dominating Detroit Tigers 6-4 as they lost 18 game winner John Conner for the season to a torn elbow flexor. Oakland will hope that the core of Steve Busby, Pretzels Getzien, Earl Whitehill and Tony Armas Jr will carry them in the postseason

The pennant races

AL East - crazy 3 team race going into the final series of the year

Toronto Blue Jays - 100-59, they will host the Guadalajara Bighorns who are 78-81

New York Yankees - 100-59, they will host the Raleigh Spitfires who are 53-106

Buffalo Bisons - 99-60 - they will host the Richmond Gamecocks who are 101-58

Prognosis looks strong for Yankees to win the division

AL Atlantic - San Juan Storm have clinched the division. San Juan made their playoff debut in 2023 and got swept in first round by Seattle Mariners

AL Central - Detroit Tigers clinched

AL Midwest - Des Moines Jaguars have clinched and will make their first postseason appearance

AL West - Utah Saints Clinched

AL Pacific - Oakland Athletics clinched

AL Wildcard (2 teams make the postseason)

1. Indianapolis Bulldogs 109-50 - Host the Albany Warcats
2. Houston Astros 108-51 - Host the San Juan Storm
3. Seattle Mariners - 108-51 - Host the San Antonio River Kings
4. Chicago White Sox - 107-52 - Host the Oakland Athletics
5. Los Angeles Angels - 105-54- Visit the Calgary Fusion

Seems like Indianapolis and Seattle are the favorites unless San Juan rests players in their series

National League

NL East - New York Mets clinched

NL Atlantic - big tie here so a lot riding on last series

Atlanta Braves - 105-54 - visit Montreal Anchors
Philadelphia Phillies - 105-54 host Pittsburgh Pirates

Seems like the state rival Pirates have something to prove, odds favor Atlanta

NL Central - Cincinnati Reds clinched

NL Midwest - Tulsa Rattlers clinched

NL West - Colorado Rockies clinched

NL Pacific - Sacramento Bees clinched

NL Wild card (8 teams still alive)

1. Riverhead Racers - 108-51 - host New Orleans Zebras
2. Arizona Diamondbacks - 106-53 - visit West Palm Beach Dinos
3. New Orleans Zebras - 106-53 visit Riverhead Racers
4/5 Atlanta Braves or Philadelphia Phillies who battle for AL Atlantic
6. Memphis Cougars - 104-55 - Host Ottawa Argonauts
7. Milwaukee Brewers - 104-55 - visit Boise Parrots
8. Los Angeles Dodgers - 103-56 - visit Austin Donkeys

Seems like Riverhead just needs to win one game against New Orleans and hard to imagine Arizona losing any games to West Palm Beach so it would seem Riverhead and Arizona

News 9/12/24

The defending NL Champion Riverhead Racers punched their ticket into the playoffs with a win today.

Detroit Tigers got bad news today as they learned centerfielder and consistent 40 homer bat Wally Judnich will be out 4 weeks with a herniated disc in his back. It happened in a 7-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. It does open the door for high prospect Dr Ross Geller to play in the playoffs for the top seeded team.

The Los Angeles Angels went out with a bang today as Bob Emslie fanned 15 batters in 8 innings in a 10-0 trouncing of the Calgary Fusion at the Saddledome. Emslie, the Angels top pick in the 2023 draft improved to 12-9 on the season and Monte Irvin hit a massive 3 run homers, his 35th of the season as part of the onslaught. Angels did get eliminated from the postseason potential regardless.

News 9/13/24

The news of the days was big for the Indianapolis Bulldogs as they make their first ever postseason berth clinching the wildcard today. It was also a solid day for the Arizona Diamondbacks who also clinched the 2nd wildcard slot leaving one spot open for the NL Atlantic Division title in the NL.
The American League still needs to decide 2nd wildcard winner and AL East champ.

It was not a great day for the Buffalo Bisons despite beating the Richmond Gamecocks 8-3 today, they were eliminated from postseason contention and have yet to make the postseason. The game was marred by ugliness as Buffalo starting pitcher threw at the head of Richmond star slugger Harvey Hendrick, punches were thrown and suspensions of 6 games each will run into the 2025 season for both players. Buffalo got a solid 4 for 4 game with RBI's from Pete Hotaling and Casey Stengel slammed homers 53 and 54 of the season while driving in 4 runs

With just one game left on the year these are the remaining teams and their last matchups of the season

AL East Division Title

Toronto Blue Jays - (102-59 they host the Guadalajara Bighorns (78-83). They will have the probable Cy Young award winning pitcher Christy Mathewson face Josh Billings.

New York Yankees (102-59) - they host the Raleigh Spitfires (53-108) and will have Cy Blanton going against Byron McLaughlin

AL Wildcard Race

Houston Astros (109-52) - Host the San Juan Storm (108-53), and they will have go against tough rookie pitcher George Zettlein. Astros are sending out Pete Smith who has struggled

Seattle Mariners (109-52) - they host the San Antonio River Kings (76-85), recently acquired Nelson Figueroa get the start for Seattle against Larry Jansen

NL Atlantic Division

Philadelphia Phillies (107-54) - host the Pittsburgh Pirates (92-69) John Shaffer gets the start for Philadelphia against Tim Belcher

Atlanta Braves (106-55) - travel to play the Montreal Anchors (75-86) for their life. George Kahler gets the important start against solid rookie Bartolo Colon. Montreal upset them last night 3-2 behind solid pitching form Dory Dean.
