By rule, we must leave 3B Bobby Scrogham (25-R) at Daytona (A) for 10 days unless we place a player on the DL in the meantime. Editor's Note: Not enforced in OOTP (yet), but if you do not play with it, you can just stash all of your tired pitchers in the minors and use it as an extended bench... Since there is no one else on the Tortugas we fancy bringing up, we will just let P Tom Betke (25-R) ride the pine. Jacksonville Jays (10-23 .303 10 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Providence Steamrollers (13-20 .394 8.5 GB in 7th place in the Northern Division) JAX: Mackie Reed (29-R) (1-3 5.35 ERA 33.2 IP, 45 H, 4 HR, 12 BB, 17 SO) vs. PROV: Jim Riggs (31-R) (2-4 3.02 ERA 50.2 IP, 39 H, 7 HR, 14 BB, 31 SO) Reed only gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and 6 walks in 8 IP last time out, but took a loss anyway. Riggs is their #1 starter. He gave up 3 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk and 9 SO in 8 IP last time out, but took a loss. We are in Richmond to play a 3 game series over the weekend. The Robins just split 4 games here with Syracuse. We opened the season here with a pair of losses, only giving them 4 total runs, but only scoring 1 ourselves. The Robins are tied for 10th in scoring with 3.83 runs per game (Jacksonville is still last with 2.94). They lead the League in SB with 53 and we are tied for 4th with 29. They are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.91 per game (Jacksonville is #14 with 4.71). They have only allowed 18 HR, 2 shy of the League leader. We have allowed 34, one shy of the League tailender.... Their run differential is 0 and ours is -62, once again easily the worst in the League. Hartford is 2nd worst at -38. Skip Dunkin triples to center and Shauer scores... 4 to 1, Jays. Andres Borges flies out to right and Dunkin tags up and gets thrown out at home by Dennis Brown! Top of the Fifth: Dennis Brown bloops a hit to left. With 1 out, Ed Diskin grounds a hit to left. Junior Danielson grounds one to 3rd, but Skip Dunkin boots it for his second error today. He had 4 on the season before today. Garrett Bender swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to right and 2 runs score!! 6 to 1, Jays! Bender has 3 hits today! He had 3 on the SEASON coming into the game! He was a last minute addition to the lineup, put in there, not because of Bert Swope's 0 for 33 streak, but because the Robins lead the League in steals and ran pretty much at will yesterday on Swope. P Victor Espinoza swings away and grounds into a 6-4-3 double play... Bottom of the Sixth: With 1 out, Skip Dunkin triples to left center. His second triple of the game. Two triples and two errors in a game is a fairly rare exacta, I would think. Andres Borges flies out to right, as he did after Dunkin's last triple, but now Joe Roberts and his sprained elbow are out there instead of Dennis Brown and Dunkin scores. 6 to 2, Jays. Top of the Seventh: On the Hill: Brian Brenner (32-R), after a scoreless 6th. CF Frank Wendell (33-R) grounds a hit to left. Tony Becerra takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Ed Diskin lines a hit to right and Wendell beats the throw home! 7 to 2, Jays! Junior Danielson grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Becerra goes to 3rd. Garrett Bender grounds out to short. Won - 7 to 2 We had 12 hits and made no errors Richmond had 4 hits and made 3 errors Victor Espinoza (W 3-3) went 9 innings (CG), allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8, tying the team record set by Frank Cook (35-R). 121 pitches. We have had 3 CG by our staff on the season, all by Espinoza. Greg Sinclair (L 3-4) went 5 innings, gave us 6 runs (5 earned), 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. LF Mike Volkman had a hit and 2 walks and scored a run. If he could play defense, he would be starting more often. CF/RF Joe Roberts had 2 hits and an RBI. 1B Tony Becerra hit a double, drew a walk and scored a run. 2B ed Diskin had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. C Garrett Bender had 3 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBI. I think he will start for a while. Down on the Farm: P Mike Gaddis (32-R), who was 0-4 with a 12.18 ERA for Jacksonville to start the season, lost today and is now 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA for Daytona (A). |

Trudy the Trainer has informed us that CF Danny Stewart (30-L) is ready to play again! Do you even remember him? He started the season as our starter in center, but since Joe Roberts is so hot lately, I think we will let Danny edge his way back into the swing of things. P Tom Benke (25-R) was sent back to Daytona (A) to make room on the roster. Jacksonville Jays (11-26 .297 11 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Richmond Robins (21-16 .568 1 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division) JAX: Spencer Shuff (32-R) (0-3 4.72 ERA 26.2 IP, 33 H, 8 HR, 8 BB, 3 SO) vs. RICH: Ken Kramer (23-R) (1-1 2.40 ERA 15 IP, 12 H, 0 HR, 7 BB, 8 SO) Rookie When you are allowing more than twice as many home runs as you have strikeouts, you are not having a very good season.... Shuff gave up 3 home runs last time out, but only 3 runs in 5.1 IP and had a no decision. This will be Kramer's 3rd Major League start. We have not faced him. He only gave up 6 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts in 7 IP last time out, but 4 runs (3 earned) and took a loss. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: LF Cal Doty (24-L .263-137-0-11-.649-8 B+) 2: CF Joe Roberts (30-L .344-93-0-8-.777-5 C+) Strained elbow 3: 3B Brian Porter (33-S .280-132-1-14-.718-0 C) 4: RF Dennis Brown (27-L .224-116-4-12-.625-0 C) Rookie 5: 1B Tony Becerra (31-L .212-118-4-11-.584-1 A+) 6: 2B Ed Diskin (37-R .135-37-0-1-.416-0 B) 7: SS Junior Danielson (29-R .146-41-0-2-.417-5 B) 8: C Garrett Bender (27-R .231-26-0-4-.541-0 B+) 9: P Spencer Shuff (32-R .167-6-0-1-.619-0 C+) RICHMOND 1: LF Steve Shauer (25-L .299-67-1-2-.733-8 A+) 2: SS Brian Bowden (24-R .229-70-1-7-.536-3 A+) 3: 3B Ray Holloway (27-R .376-133-4-33-.958-7 B+) 4: CF Jose Vazquez (28-R .343-143-1-14-.802-10 A) 5: 1B Mike Sammon (22-R .270-74-1-12-.683-3 B) 6: RF Bob Cline (22-R .192-52-0-4-.526-1 B) Rookie 7: 2B Skip Dunkin (22-S .280-164-1-11-.700-17 A) 8: C Larry Slattery (25-R .186-97-1-7-.505-0 C) 9: P Ken Kramer (23-R .200-5-0-0-.400-0 F) Rookie #106 prospect Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Griffith Stadium Weather: 73 F, Clear Skies, with an 8 MPH wind blowing out to left Attendance: 12,456 Top of the First: Cal Doty flies out to left. Joe Roberts swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Brian Porter flies out to right... Bottom of the First: Steve Shauer flies out to left. Brian Bowden lines an 0-2 pitch to center for a hit... Ray Holloway pops out to right. Bowden tries to steal 2nd, but C Garrett Bender throws him out! Bottom of the Second: With 1 out, Mike Sammon and Bob Cline hit back to back singles. Skip Dunkin then triples to left center.... 2 to 0, Robins. 3 triples in 2 games for Dunkin... He has 6 on the season now. Larry Slattery lines a double to the right field corner and Dunkin scores... 3 to 0, Robins. With 2 outs, Steve Shauer bloops a hit to left and Slattery scores... 4 to 0, Robins. Bottom of the Third: With 1 out, Jose Vazquez pops a little hit to left. He goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. Mike Sammon lines a hit to center. The Bullpen is up. Bob Cline grounds a hit to center and Vazquez scores... 5 to 0, Robins. Skip Dunkin up and he does NOT triple! He doubles to left center and both runners score... 7 to 0, Robins. Call to the Bullpen: Bill Grant (30-L). Larry Slattery draws a walk... With 2 outs, a passed ball moves the runners up. Steve Shauer grounds a hit to left and Dunkin scores... 8 to 0, Robins. Top of the Fourth: Joe Roberts leads off with a double to left center. But the next three all make outs... Top of the Sixth: PH Frank Roadman (26-R) swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds one to 3rd, but Ray Holloway boots it. He goes to 2nd on ground out. With 2 outs, Brian Porter lines a hit to left and Roadman scores! 8 to 1, Robins. No Shutout! RF Mike Volkman (33-K) grounds a double down the right field line and Porter scores from 1st! 8 to 2, Robins. Bottom of the Sixth: New Pitcher: Barry Finney (25-R). Steve Shauer swings at the first pitch and lines a double to left... Finney has turned into goo... With 2 outs, Jose Vazquez dumps a hit into center. A wild pitch scores Shauer... 9 to 2, Robins. Bottom of the Seventh: Bob Cline leads off with a double to right center. But the next three make outs! Lost - 9 to 2 We had 7 hits and made no errors Richmond had 16 hits and made 1 error Spencer Shuff (L 0-4) went 2.1 innings, allowed 8 runs, 10 hits, no walks and struck out no one. He threw a WP. But he did not allow a home run! Normally, I would send someone pitching as bad as he is to the minors, but who would take his place? The best ERA of any starting pitcher at Daytona (A) right now is 5.21....That is Tom Benke (25-R), who we just sent back there. He has a .349 BA against him and that is the best of anyone in the rotation.... We have put two new pitchers in their rotation, who are low on stamina, but if one of them pitches decently, we will call him up. Otherwise, we will have to hope against hope that someone offers us a starting pitcher in trade. LHP Bill Grant went 2.2 scoreless innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. RHP Barry Finney went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits and struck out 2. He threw a WP. RHP Roger Wallace pitched a perfect inning and struck out 1. Ken Kramer (W 2-1) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 2 unearned runs, 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. 119 pitches. CF Joe Roberts hit a double. 3B Brian Porter had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. RF mike Volkman hit a double and had an RBI. For Richmond, LF Steve Shauer had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBI. RF Bob Cline went 4 for 4 with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B Skip Dunkin hit a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBI. |

First walk P Reddick has allowed since joining the Jays. That is why he was chosen to pitch now... P Bob Carroll, who we fully expect to get a hit, instead swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short! We can call back 3B Bobby Scrogham (25-R) from Daytona (A) now, but he has not hit a lick for the Tortugas, so we will leave him there for seasoning. The Memphis Mules are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They have also had the last two days off and lost a pair of games in Richmond on Monday and Tuesday. Today is RP Barry Finney's 26th birthday! Yesterday, on our off day, we sent P Spencer Shuff (32-R), SS Junior Danielson (29-R) and CF Frank Wendell (33-R) to Daytona (A). We called up P Sherrell Brown (27-R), 1B/3B Rick Tuttle (34-R) and LF Barry Laskowski (34-R). Brown had a 2.81 ERA in 16 IP for the Tortugas, but did not pitch very well in his only start. Danielson and Wendell were sent down because the Tortugas have a crisis of manpower at short and center and neither one of them are doing much for us. Tuttle and Laskowski are not playing very well, but might be useful against the left-handers that have plagued us, though Laskowski cannot play defense at all. We are in Buffalo to play the Bombers a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games in Rochester. They have only scored a total of 6 runs in their last 5 games, after leading the League in scoring earlier in the season. They are now 6th in scoring with 4.43 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.40). The Bombers are aptly named as they are 2nd in the League in HR with 52. We are now last all alone with 16. They are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.59 per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 4.98). We have allowed the 2nd most HR (41), while they have allowed the 3rd most (40). Their run differential is -7 and ours is -71. still behind Hartford (-62) for last in the League. Jacksonville Jays (15-30 .333 12.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Buffalo Bombers (21-25 .457 7.5 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) JAX: Victor Espinoza (36-R) (4-3 1.52 ERA 65 IP, 49 H, 2 HR, 14 BB, 46 SO) vs. BUF: Danny Belsky (28-R) (3-3 3.29 ERA 54.2 IP, 58 H, 5 HR, 15 BB, 39 SO) Espinoza has won his last 2 starts.
