COLLEGE BASKETBALL

During the off-season, just to keep the winter sports in mind I will touch on various players or accomplishments in hockey and basketball. So with 37 years of college basketball history built up in this league here is a look at the single season points leaders in NCAA hoops.

Only a couple of players made the the top twenty five in more than one season. The first is a fictional (game generated) player by the name of Marshall Dunn, who was a star at USC from 1929-1932. Dunn was a two-time All American (1 first team and 1 third team appearances) and was all Pacific Coast Conference each of his four seasons despite only being ranked 38th in his recruiting class coming out of high school. He would also be currently rank second all-time behind John Issacs of UCLA in total career points. Despite those accomplishments his career would not continue beyond college as he was not drafted into my pro league, the Midwest Basketball Association.

The other player on the list twice is a real player (*before last name identifies them) by the name of Russ Ochsenhirt. He has been mentioned a couple of times in this report already as he just completed his senior season at Illinois and is a possible selection in next months MBA draft.

RUSS OCHSENHIRT PLAYER PROFILE AND HOW I RATED THESE EARLY PLAYERS

I thought I would spotlight Ochsenhirt. He helped lead Illinois to the National Title game this season and it seemed in every Illini game I watched (well, technically just read the game play-by-play) he would come up with the key play when it was needed so Ochsenhirt has become one of my favourite players in the league and a guy I will follow as he hopefully moves to the professional Midwest Basketball Association.

Ochsenhirt is one of the players based on a real-life athletes. I say 'based on' because it is all but impossible for me to make accurate ratings for these early guys. Instead what I have been doing is renaming the top 20-50 (depending on the year) recruits the game generates each season to real life players and tweaking their ratings slightly based on what little I have been able to learn about them. It will get much easier in the next decade when I have the NBA draft to go by for creating my high school freshman class but where I get many of the players for this era is from a list I found of the top 5000 or so basketball players of all-time (Ochsenhirt was #2842 by the way) and used that as a starting point for the recruits I added each year. Doing the ratings will also be much easier as I will use the NBA historical Mod from FBPB and the NFL historical mod for DDSPF as the basis for creating current and potential ratings for the players as college recruits. I just want to try to get things as close to realistic as I can knowing there will be a huge change in development anyways as all these players go through 4 years of college and ratings development changes before even starting in my NFL of NBA portion of the sim.

I have mentioned it before that with OOTP and FHM how I love to use the development engine to see different players suddenly become much better then they were in real life instead of the recalculate ratings option. I find this sort of historical/fictional approach to be my preferred way of playing. I think it translates well for what I am trying with the basketball and football as well, although with much more legwork on my part. I do enjoy doing that as it gives me - as a sports history junkie - the opportunity to learn about a lot of different players in the same way adding the historical minor leagues to OOTP did for baseball.

Back to Ochsenhirt. In researching him to add as a high school recruit I learned he is a Sharsburg, Pa. native that played his college ball at the University of Pittsburgh. It is interesting how such a huge percentage of guys came from NY, PA and the upper Midwest. I was editing their real hometowns for recruits but stopped recently as with all the star recruits from the one area it made the Western Conference teams too dominant so I stopped that practice and just leave the hometown random now.

A 6'3" forward the real-life Ochsenhirt was an All-American in 1934 (I obviously had the college debut year wrong on him) and after school would take a job in management with Goodyear, while also playing a number of seasons for the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots of the National Basketball League. He was a team captain both at Pitt and with the Wingfoots.

In the sim, Ochsenhirt missed almost all of his freshman season after being injured just prior to the start of the year. He returned only for the Illini's final game, a 42-33 loss to Tulsa in the opener of the 1935 NCAA tournament. Clearly rusty, he shot just 2 for 8 from the field with 3 rebounds as #2 seeded Illinois was upset in the East Region's opening round. Healthy for his sophomore season, Ochsenhirt would lead the team in scoring and help Illinois to the Western Conference title. As the top seed in the Midwest Region in the 1936 NCAA tournament, Illinois would beat Texas Western 65-24 in the opening round with Ochsenhirt scoring 13 points. Their tournament run would end in the second round with a 27-25 loss to New York University, who's stifling defense held Ochsenhirt to just 4 points.

1936-37, his junior year, would see Illinois tie with Wisconsin for the Western Conference title, and claim their second straight championship by virtue of a win over the Badgers during the season. Averaging 14.9 PPG, Russ would again lead Illinois in scoring and they would get the number one seed in the East Region. Ochsenhirt had 14 points in the tournament opening 55-45 win over Georgetown and would score 19, including 6 of their 9 points in overtime as they outlasted Mississippi 56-54 to reach the Elite Eight. There they would run into Mississippi State, and despite Ochsenhirt's game high 21 points, they would fall 71-64 to the Bulldogs and finish the season with a 27-5 record.

This past season, as you may have read earlier, Illinois finished just 5-4 in conference play but went on to reach the National Title Game before falling to Washington. Ochsenhirt once again led the team in scoring and earned second team All-America honours. I expect he will be drafted to the MBA but with 6 teams there are only 12 selections made in the league draft so we will have to wait and see if there is another chaprter in the career of Russell Ochsenhirt.

Player Profile: Ted Kleinhans

THE ARM THAT TURNED AROUND A FRANCHISE

Years from now he will be remembered as the man that turned around the Kansas City Blues. For now it is all still very fresh in the minds of baseball fans but still very much a story that warrants telling. It seems like something otherworldly. Magic maybe, or perhaps Ted Kleinhans sold his soul to the devil for a chance at baseball immortality? Whatever the reason Kleinhans incredible 1937 season at the age of 38 is the stuff of legend, certainly for what he accomplished that season but even more so because of how he got to that point. A performance that really can only be compared to the early days of OOTP, before league and player development modifiers were fine tuned.

The only thing I have seen without greatly tinkering with player development traces back to the early days of my History of Baseball replays - annual sims I did each year starting with OOTP2 recreating the entire history of baseball. There was a legendary player by the name of Cliff Markle (his image is my avatar) who was 12-17 over 5 real-life seasons with the Yankees and Reds from 1915-24, that somehow developed into the greatest pitcher in league history in one of my sims - posting a 360-160 career record, winning 9 pitcher of the year awards and 11 World Series titles.

Kleinhans was far too old to hit that level of sustained excellence but for the 1937 season and perhaps beyond as the 1938 campaign is just underway, his incredible performance yielded comparisions, at least for me, only to the legend that was Markle in my original History of Baseball replay.

In 1936 the Blues were a bad team. In fact going back prior to the conversion of the American Association to a major league the Blues were bad. They did finish third in 1936 in real life but were coming off 3 straight second division finishes including back to back last place showings in 1934 and 1935. But that is prior to the history of our online league. In the online league the history began in 1936, and the Blues were still bad, going 63-91 despite the efforts of a 28 year old pitcher named Al Hollingsworth, who would win 18 of those 63 games and post a very respectable 3.97 era. Sure the Blues had a couple of bats in ex-major leaguers Dale Alexander (.344,14,114) and Billy Herman (.328,6,82) and what looks like a one year wonder in then 24 year old outfielder Malin McCulloch, who hit .314 with a team high 122 rbi's but did little the following season and two teams later is now a reserve outfielder for the St Paul Saints. Regardless, it was 1936 in a new pitching starved league so everyone had at least a few players that could hit. What the Blues lacked, even more so then most of the other seven teams was pitching.

That changed in 1937 when Kansas City suddenly had the best pitching in the league and went from the outhouse of the American Association to the penthouse with a league best 92-62 record, an improvement of 29 victories over the previous season. The 28 year old Hollingsworth performed much the same as a year ago, going 19-17 to follow up his 18-16 season a year ago. 33 year old Johnny Niggeling, who in real life would not make the big leagues until age 34 but go on to pitch for 9 seasons in the majors, would improve from 8-11 in 1936 to 16-15 in the championship season but far and away the biggest story was the emergence of Ted Kleinhans- a 38 year old journeyman with an unlikely real life story but an even more increbile sim performance. Kleinhans, having went just 1-1 for the 1936 New York Yankees, was merely a minor notation in the transaction pages when the Blues added him for the 1937 season but when the year ended he led the league in all three pitching triple crown categories at 30-9, with a 2.73 era and 256 strikeouts. His 30 wins at age 38 were 6 times what he had accumulated in his major league career in the first 37 years of his life and he led the Blues to the top of the American Association standings. Kleinhans would make 3 more starts in an epic 7 game American Series that season and while he would win just 1 of those starts his 2.16 era was still the best on the club even though he was overshadowed by teammate Al Hollingsworth going 3-0, 2.70 in his 3 Series outings. Kleinhans was a clear choice for top pitcher in the Association, capping an unlikely rise for a man who did not pitch in his first professional game until age 29 (although it should be noted the Cleveland Indians, the time that signed him, was under the impression he was 5 years younger at the time.)

Kleinhans, the story goes, was working as a sales clerk while pitching in semi-pro leagues in Cleveland until, at the age of 29, Indians scout Frank Novario persuaded him to sign with the club. He would start the 1928 season, but listed as age 24, in Class C with the Johnstown Johnnies where he turned in a 4-6 record with a 3.69 era. He repeated in that leaue the following season, going 13-8 for two teams before moving up to the Class B Three-I League in 1930 where he went 14-15 in 37 games. Now 33, he finally made it as high as AAA late in the 1932 season, although for just 3 game with Columbus as he became St Louis Cardinals property. In 1933 he was optioned to the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association and had his best season as a pro, winning 19 games.

That winter he was dealt to the Cubs, who then quickly flipped him to the Phillies with a package of players and cash to acquire Chuck Klein. Twelve days after his 35th birthday, Kleinhans made his MLB debut for the Phillies. He came on in the bottom of the 8th inning with a 2-0 lead but promptly surrendered 3 earned runs on three hits including a 2-run homer be Len Koenecke. He would pitch four more times out of the pen but in mid-May was dealt to Cincinnati. He would not have much more success with the Reds but did his first career start and first big league victory but finished the year with a 2-6 record. He was back to the minors in 1936 when his contract was sold to the Yankees organization. It is at this point the two careers of Ted Kleinhans (real and OOTP sim) diverge drastically.

The real-life Kleinhans went 1-1 for the '36 Yankees and would pitch briefly for Cincinnati in both 1937 and 1938 going 1-2 in 8 appearances to finish with a lifetime 4-9 major league record. In real life Kleinhans spent most of 1937 in Kansas City and posted decent numbers (15-9, 4.03) but nothing like the sim Kleinhans, who would become a legend in Kansas City with his 30 victory performance. The real life Kleinhans would be back in the minors for good in 1938 and would pitch 4 seasons for Syracuse of the International League before retiring at the age of 42. Kleinhans would end up coaching baseball at Syracuse University for 20 years (replacing Forest Evaskevski who was the QB of the National Champion Michigan Wolverines in 1938 in my sim).

The sim Kleinhans final chapters are yet to be written but his historic 1937 campaign in the now major league American Association have become the stuff of legend. The question remains is will that legend continue to grow? It is early in the 1938 season but the Blues and Kleinhans, while not quite as dominant as they weres a year ago, still seem be a solid contender for an opportunity to defend their title in the playoffs. Kleinhans is off to a 2-2 start with a 3.19 era in his 4 appearances in April. To learn if there are more legendary moments in the life of a now 39 year old Ted Kleinhans you will need to keep following the AAreplay online League. Regardless of the outcome, his 1938 season will be remembered in Kansas City for quite some time.

RED SOX ON A ROLL

After starting the season with just 2 wins in their first 9 games the Boston Red Sox have been the hottest team in the American League of late, winning 10 of their last 13 including 6 in a row. Jimmie Foxx (.265,6,26) has led the way offensively and was named the American League player of the week. It was actually the last week of April when Boston got things going, by winning 4 straight before having a tough time in New York at the tail end of last week, being shut out twice in a row by the Yankees on the weekend. The streaky Red Sox dropped a third straight game on Monday with a 7-4 loss to the Browns, but since then they reeled off the 6 straight wins including a walk-off 7-6 extra innings victory over the Browns on Wednesday when Foxx hit a game ending rbi double.

Despite dropping two of three to the Yankees to start the week, the Cleveland Indians are the other hot team in the AL. The Tribe find themselves atop the American League standings, 1 game up on New York after finishing the week with 4 straight wins over struggling Chicago and lowly Washington. The Indians offense has been key as they lead the major leagues in runs scored by a wide margin with the trio of Odell Harris (.356,5,16), Roy Weatherly (.489,1,16) and Hal Trosky (.310,4,16) carrying the mail.

11 wins in their last 12 games has allowed the New York Giants to open up a 2.5 game lead on second place Cincinnati in the National League. The Giants have been winning despite star outfielder Mel Ott's (.232,2,11) struggles at the plate in the early going. The pitching staff has been key for New York with Harry Gumbert (3-0, 2.70), Slick Castleman (3-1, 2.38), Al Smith (2-1, 2.22) and Fred Frankhouse (2-1, 2.92) performing well in the starting rotation.

MLB NOTES:
Despite an outstanding start to the season from 25 year old first baseman Johnny Mize (.408,10,26) the defending champion St Louis Cardinals are only at .500 after 20 games. Mize leads the NL in homers and rbi's and is second only behind Brooklyn's Babe Phelps in batting average.

Cincinnati reliever Whitey Moore led the NL in saves last season with 16. This season he already has 4 in 4 opportunities and maybe the MLB record of 22 set by Firpo Mayberry in 1926 is in sight.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

The Minneapolis Millers, Kansas City Blues and Toledo Mud Hens rank 1-2-3 in fewest runs allowed and sit atop the American Association standings. The Millers have a half game lead on the other two despite dropping two of three in a series with the Mud Hens this past week.

Minneapolis has a powerful offense to go with their pitching and, at +48, enjoy the largest run differential in the league. Rookie Ted Williams (.362,5,17) has been outstanding as have veterans Earl Browne (.353,5,13), Buzz Arlett (.353,6,16) and Chuck Klein (.370,3,19).

Toledo has also been scoring runs in bunches with Benny McCoy (.269,6,16), Phil Weintraub (.267,4,17) and Roy Cullenbine (.313,2,17) leading the way while Gene Schott (4-1, 2.30) continues to dominate on the mound.

Kansas City's strength has been it's pitching staff with a rotation of Al Hollingsworth (3-0, 4.56), Ted Kleinhans (3-2, 2.97). Tiny Bonham (3-3, 3.56) and Fred Gay (2-3, 3.19) looking solid while reliever Marv Breuer has yet to surrender a run in 7 appearances.

A GIANT LEAD

The New York Giants continue to be the hottest team in baseball, extending their winning streak to 11 games with all of them coming on the road including a 3 game sweep of Pittsburgh over the weekend. New York, winners of 17 of their last 18 games, has extended it's lead atop the National League to 6.5 games on second place Philadelphia.

Pitching continues to be the main reason for the Giants success with Harry Gumbert (5-0, 2.25) and Slick Castleman (5-1, 2.25) leading the way. What makes New York's success even more impressive is that Mel Ott (.225,3,14), the NL MVP each of the last two seasons, continues to struggle at the plate. Questions abound about whether or not Ott's switch from right field to third base this season has been what has thrown him off in the batter's box. Ott was moved from the outfield to make room for 21 year old second year player George Case (.224,0,7) but Case has also had his difficulities in the early going.

Regardless, the move of Ott to the infield appears permanent as the Giants completed a trade last week sending their former third baseman Eddie Mayo to Detroit in exchange for right fielder Pete Fox. The 29 year old Fox hit .273 a year ago for Detroit. Mayo hit .284 last season as the Giants everyday third baseman but played in just 3 games this season.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: After getting two hits in a 9-4 loss to the New York Giants yesterday, Pittsburgh's Paul Waner is just 3 hits shy of the 2,500 mark.
Detroit Tiger outfielder Al Simmons homered early in the week. It was his 6th round tripper of the season and 296th of his career, leaving the 35 year old 4 shy of the 300 mark and just 5 short of tying Rogers Hornsby for 5th most all-time.
Brooklyn's Jim Bottomley has confirmed this will be his final season. The 38 year old spent most of his career with the Cardinals but has also played for Cincinnati, the St Louis Browns as well as the Dodgers. He is batting just .140 so far this season, a far cry from his .309 career batting average.
Cardinals pitcher Paul Dean struggled early but seems to be getting back to the form that helped him go 25-8 last season. Dizzy's younger brother has won his last 3 starts to improve to 5-1 and is coming off a complete game shutout in a 4-0 win over the Cubs. Dizzy Dean has also pitched well, with a 2.39 era but has not received a lot of run support which is reflected in his 3-3 record.
Joe DiMaggio (.250,6,18) is showing signs of getting going for the Yankees. The 23 year old center fielder hit 4 homers and drove in 11 runs in the past two weeks.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

The St Paul Saints have not experienced much success in recent seasons but the Saints enjoyed a winning week thanks in no small part to the play of Bill Norman. The 27 year old went 12-for-26 (.462) with 4 homers and 8 rbi's as the Saints won four of six games this week. The performance earned player of the week honours for the veteran outfielder.

The big series this week saw the Toledo Mud Hens take two of three games from Kansas City in a rematch of last season's American Series. Kansas City took the opener 5-2 as Al Hollingsworth (4-0, 3.99) outduelled Gene Schott (4-2, 2.62) before the Mud Hens took the next two. Babe Herman (.294,1,4) delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth of a 6-5 victory before new Mud Hen Archie McKain (3-2, 1.70) stopped the Blues and Ted Kleinhans (4-3, 3.00) 6-1 in the series finale. For Kleinhans the loss came one start after an outstanding effort from the reigning pitcher of the year. Kleinhans threw a 2-hitter to lead the Blues past Minneapolis 8-1 to start the week.

IS SYL APPS ON HIS WAY TO BECOMING THE GREATEST PRE-1967 PLAYER IN NHL HISTORY?
Syl Apps is only 23 years old and recently completed just his second NHL season but there is already talk the two-time Hart Trophy winner may be on his way to the greatest career in hockey history. Ever since he made his NHL debut in October of 1936, Apps has looked dominant, leading the league in scoring both years and being named the NHL's Most Valuable Player on each occasion. Apps' 37 goals this past season established a new standard, breaking by one the mark set by his Toronto teammate Charlie Conacher in 1935-36. Prior to Conacher, the record had stood since the NHL's inaugural season of 1917-18 when Newsy Lalonde lit the lamp 35 times that year. Only Joe Malone's 78 points in 1917-18 is more than the 76 that Apps accumulated in each of his two NHL seasons so it's seems just a matter of time before he sets a new single season point mark to go with his goal scoring standard and the assists record he set with 50 as a rookie two seasons ago. No one has come close to putting up the numbers that Apps has had in his first two seasons.

In real life Apps was not only an outstanding NHL player, but he also finished 6th in the pole vault in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and played university football in Canada. Following his hockey days he became a politician in Ontario. His son, Syl Jr. also played 10 seasons in the NHL. As for the senior Apps, he was named one of the 100 greatest players in NHL history. He retired in 1948 at the age of 33 despite coming off the best season of his career points-wise. In 423 career games he had 201 goals and 432 points despite missing 2 seasons in the military during WWII.

CALIFORNIA HEADS COLLEGE HOOPS RECRUITING CLASS

College basketball recruiting has finished for the upcoming season and the top class belongs to the University of California. The Bears landed a pair of top ten recruits in #3 overall Robert Dro and #7 Dode Heilman. Both are guards with Dro being a historical player who starred at Indiana before playing briefly as a pro with the Indianapolis Kautskys. He was also an accomplished baseball player and spent some time in the minors in the Dodgers organization.

Washington, Michigan, Mississippi State, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York University, Columbia, Alabama Poly and Mississippi round out the top ten recruiting classes.

The defending National Champion Huskies class is highlighted by Elwood Norris and Warner Engdahl, both ranked in the top twenty nationally. Elwood "Woody" Norris was a forward who played for Butler in real life before spending several seasons in the NBL. Warner 'Bud' Engdahl also played in the NBL for several seasons after concluding his college career at Wisconsin.

The number one recruit was Abe Yourist, who signed with Columbia. Yourist would play in the National Basketball League briefly in real life before going on to have a long professional wrestling career.

RANGERS GOALTENDER CHABOT RETIRES

After 12 years tending the New York Rangers net, goaltender Lorne Chabot has decided to retire. Chabot spent his entire 493 game career as a Blueshirt, winning 230 games and helping backstop the Rangers to their only Stanley Cup win in 1935. He won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender in 1929-30 and was a first team all-star once and second team all-star twice in his career.

The departure of Chabot does leave the Rangers in a tough situation regarding their goaltending. They only goalie they have on their roster is Chabot's long-time backup Benny Grant, a 29 year old who has played 59 career games for Toronto, Detroit and both New York teams. He has been with the Rangers the past four seasons and was 5-3-1 in 9 starts last season. Except New York to be looking for an upgrade before next season starts.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

The New York Yankees have spent most of the past two seasons at the top of the American League standings so they are no stranger to the position they presently hold by 5 games. The Yankees have won 14 of their past 16 contests including a pair of weekend victories in Philadelphia over the Athletics, who are one of three teams tied for second.

Lefty Gomez (7-0,2.97), Red Ruffing (6-2, 3.94) and Johnny Broaca (5-2, 3.18) have headlined the Yankee rotation together for the past 5 years and since the sim portion began in 1936 are a combined 161-53 over that span including 18-4 this season. Joe DiMaggio (.271,6,25) and Lou Gehrig (.278,5,25) both are coming around lately after slow starts but while they struggled catcher Bill Dickey (.340,7,32), outfielder George Selkirk (.312,7,27) and third baseman Red Rolfe (.387,0,19) carried the offense. It is only mid-May but it is already starting to look like a third straight American League Pennant for the Yankees is a foregone conclusion.

The New York Giants slipped up a big last week dropping 3 of their last 4 games including suffering a 2-game sweep at the hands of Boston at the Polo Grounds over the weekend. Prior to a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday the Giants had won 14 straight games but even after the rough weekend they still enjoy a 6 game lead on St Louis atop the National League.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: Paul Waner became the 29th player in baseball history to reach the 2500 hit plateau and he did so in dramatic fashion, delivering a walk-off rbi single in the bottom of the 10th inning to plate his brother Lloyd with the winning run a 2-1 Pittsburgh Pirates victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Claude Passeau, who went the distance on the mound for the Phillies, served up the milestone marker.

Chicago Cubs catcher Gabby Hartnett became the first player this season to hit for the cycle when we went 4-for-4 with 3 rbi's in a 7-0 Cubs win over Boston this week. Ethan Allen of the White Sox and the Wally Moses of the Athletics were the only MLB players to hit for the cycle last year.

Detroit's Charlie Gehringer had a 21 game hitting streak snapped on Saturday in a 7-2 loss to the White Sox. It also ended a 4-game streak in which Gehringer had 3 hits in each game. The 35 year old second baseman leads the major leagues with a .424 batting average and was named American League player of the week.

Johnny Mize of the Cardinals continues his torrid play. Mize (.392,14,39) hit 3 homers last week and drove in 8 runs to capture NL player of the week honours. He leads the NL in homers and rbi's on the season and is third in batting average.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

The Toledo Mud Hens have scored the most runs in the American Association while allowing the fewest against so it is easy to figure out how the team has won 8 of it's last 9 games and twelve of 15 to extend their lead to 3 games over second place Kansas City. Gene Schott (6-2, 2.71), Paul Derringer (6-2, 4.66) and Al Benton (4-0, 5.59) have been getting the job done on the mound while at the plate it has been Benny McCoy (.306,7,21), Roy Cullenbune (.325,4,31), Phil Weintraub (.261,6,24) and Chet Laabs (.246,5,27) who have been driving in runs while lead-off man Lonny Frey (.395,3,21) has set the table. Frey, who had 16 hits in 29 at bats last week to capture player of the week honours, now finds himself sitting atop the American Association batting average leaderboard.

The Mud Hens enjoyed a big weekend series, taking two of three from the Millers in Minneapolis and outscoring the home side 28-11 in the process. The Millers had a rough week as they also dropped two of three to second place Kansas City but did sweep a 2-game set from St Paul with a pair of comeback victories.

The big series coming up this week takes place in Toledo when the Mud Hens welcome Kansas City to town for a 3 game weekend set. The Blues, who beat the Mud Hens in last year's American Series, are 4-3 this season against Toledo.

The other highlight will be the annual game in Indianapolis before the 26th running of auto racing's Indy 500. The seventh place Indians will host Minneapolis.

DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS UNVIEL 1938 SCHEDULE

The Michigan Wolverines look to follow up their National Title winning 11-1 1937 season with another trip to the Rose Bowl. While quarterback Forest Evashevski and running back Tom Harmon return and look to follow up on outstanding freshman seasons, the rest of the offense will be quite different as 7 starters have graduated. Evashevski, who threw 14 touchdown passes and as Western Conference Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman, will be counted on once again to lead the Wolverines.

Here is the 1938 Michigan football schedule.
Code:

 MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SCHEDULE 1938
WK 1 at Northwestern
WK 2 VIRGINIA
WK 3 UCLA
Wk 4 at Notre Dame
WK 5 at Michigan State
WK 6 ILLINOIS
WK 7 at Minnesota
WK 8 INDIANA
WK 9 IOWA
WK 10 at Purdue
WK 11 OHIO STATE
The two big non conference games will be home to Virginia in week two and at Notre Dame two weeks later. The Wolverines did not play either of those schools last season but those two Wolverine foes did meet each other in the Sun Bowl with the Cavaliers winning 10-6 over an injury depleted Irish squad. Virginia finished with the same 11-1 record as Michigan a year ago and was ranked #2 in the final AP Poll. Notre Dame finished 14th with a 9-3 record.

In conference, the Wolverines will be looking to avenge their only loss last season, which came in an upset at Indiana. The annual season-ending game against Ohio State will be at home this season, with the Buckeyes out for revenge after the Wolverines won in Columbus.

ROBERTS WINS INDY 500

Floyd Roberts led for 185 of the 200 laps to emerge as the winner of the 1938 Indianapolis 500. The 38 year old North Dakota native started on the pole and despite giving up the lead for a brief period, regained it on lap 25 and never looked back, winning by a 3 lap margin over second place Wilbur Shaw, who was the winner of last year's event.

Roberts jumped out to a lead right away but was being pressured early by Tony Gulotta and Chet Miller, who had started fourth and fifth on the grid. On the tenth lap Miller took over the lead as he moved from third to first by passing both Gulotta and Miller on that lap. Miller was increasing his lead but it would be short-lived as his oil pump gave out on lap 25 and he was forced to retire. Roberts took over the top spot at that point and never looked back, finishing in a time of 4:07:49 with an average speed of 121.13 miles per hour, or just under 1 mph faster than Shaw's winning time a year ago. A year ago, in the race won by Shaw, Roberts lasted just one lap before electical issues ended his day. He finished 32nd in the 33 car field.

In real life Roberts won the 1938 Indy 500 with a then record speed of 117.2 MPH, leading for 95 laps. It was his fourth Indy 500 and first victory. Tragically, he would die at the Indy track a year later when he was caught up in wreck that also included Chet Miller midway through the event. Shaw would finish second in the real 1938 event after winning the previous season while Miller would place third. Jimmy Snyder, who finished third in the sim race, was 15th in real life after lasting just 149 of the 200 laps before retiring with engine issues.

Amazing how dangerous the race was back then and yet drivers continued to compete. The 1938 real event had a crash that seriously injured drive Emil Andres and killed a spectator. The 1939 event, as mentioned killed defending champ Roberts and a driver named Bill Swanson, who was involved in the crash that killed Roberts would he himself be killed in a midgit car race a year later.

YANKEES, GIANTS LEAD WAY WITH PITCHING

The New York Yankees and New York Giants continue to hold solid leads in their respective leagues thanks to possessing the most dominant pitching in baseball. In the Bronx, the Yankees team ERA of 3.38 is well over half a run better than any of the other seven American League teams while the Giants 2.76 ERA is equally as dominant in the National League.

The Yankees rotation consists of Lefty Gomez (7-1, 2.91), Red Ruffing (8-2, 3.50), Danny McFayden (5-3, 3.93), Johnny Broaca (6-2, 2.88) and Bob Weiland (3-4, 3.62) while the Giants rely on Slick Castleman (7-2, 2.28), Harry Gumbert (6-2, 2.61), Hal Schumacher (4-4, 3.57), Al Smith (5-2, 3.30) and Fred Frankhouse (3-0, 3.64).

Second place Cleveland suffered a serious blow to their American League pennant hopes when it was learned this week that Thornton Lee (5-3, 3.10) is done for the season after an arm injury. It is the second straight season the Indians have been without a key starting pitcher for an extended amount of time. 19 year old Bob Feller, who was the American League rookie of the year in 1936, missed three months last season with elbow troubles. The fireballing righthander seems no worse for wear this season as he is off to a 5-3 start with an MLB leading 63 strikeouts.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: A couple of World Series foes from last season where named players of the week. Joe Medwick (.359,11,39) went 12-for-28 with 2 homers and 10 rbi's in 7 games for St Louis to claim the NL prize while Yankee legend Lou Gehrig (.329,8,36) is heating up after a .577, 3 homer, 11 rbi week.

Buddy Myer joined the 2000 hit club with a triple in Washington's 11-4 win over the Philadelphia Athletics this week. The 34 year old second baseman has played 1727 career MLB games. However, Myer sprained his ankle later in the same game and is sidelined for a week.

While Dizzy Dean (3-5, 2.83) has been hit with some hard luck, his younger brother Paul is enjoying another outstanding season. The younger Dean is 7-2 with a 2.61 era after throwing a 6-hit shutout at Brooklyn this week. Dean led the National League in wins last season with a 25-8 record.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

The big showdown last week between Kansas City and Toledo provided plenty of excitement as the league's top two teams hooked up. The Blues took two of the three game set and trail the Mud Hens by two games as the month of May nears it's end.

Game one of the series was a duel between Tiny Bonham and Paul Derringer with the Blues Bonham (5-3, 3.07) emerging on top with a 2-1 victory thanks to a pair of rbi's from catcher Clyde McCullough (.281,3,15) including the winner in the top of the 8th inning. The next night was also a 2-1 final with the Mud Hens winning on a walk-off sacrifice fly off the bat of Willie Wells (.267,2,25) made a winner out of Gene Schott (7-2, 2.52) over Ted Kleinhans (4-6,3.02) in a game that saw both starters go the distance with Kleinhans allowing just 4 hits while Schott surrendered 5.

The bats got going in the series finale, won 9-7 by the visitors as Joe Gallagher (.311,4,19) had two hits including a homer and drove in 4 runs to pace the Kansas City attack. Dale Alexander (.259,4,18) also had a big game for the Blues, with a pair of hits and 3 rbi's.

Meanwhile, the Minneapolis Millers went 4-2 on the week to move to within 3 games of top spot. Millers righthander Denny Galehouse (8-3, 2.87) made three starts in the last 8 days and won them all with complete games, including a 2-1 gem over Columbus on Wednesday. Galehouse's final win of the week game in festivities leading up to the running of the Indy 500 as he and his Millers teammates won in Indianapolis by a 10-2 score.

St Paul's Bill Norman became the first American Association player in a year and a half to hit 3 homeruns in game. The 27 year old outfielder, who is batting .336 with 8 homers on the season, accomplished the feat in a 9-1 win over Indianapolis on Monday. It came in the midst of a rare 5 game winning streak for the Saints.

MAROONS FOLD, NHL DOWN TO SEVEN TEAMS

The Montreal Maroons have elected to cease operation, dropping the National Hockey League down to seven teams for the 1938-39 season. The change will see the league eliminate the two division format and each of the seven clubs will play 48 games. The playoffs will have six teams qualify with the top two getting a bye for the best of three opening round. The semi-finals and finals will now each be a best of seven series.

The Maroons players are all declared free agents and the seven remaining teams quickly got to work signing players including:

The New York Rangers signed 25 year old winger Toe Blake. The injury plagued former Maroon appeared in just 17 games last season, scoring 7 goals and adding 4 assists.

The Detroit Red Wings signed 34 year old defenseman Babe Siebert. Siebert had 8 goals and 12 assists in 48 games last year. In his 575 game NHL career, spent entirely with the Maroons, Siebert tallied 122 goals and 405 points.

The Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs signed former Maroons goaltender Davey Kerr. The 8 year vet, who is 28 years old, posted a 2.66 goals against average last season while going 10-23-9.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL - UCLA, USC LOOK TO REBOUND

After very disappointing seasons the two Los Angeles based college football teams are each looking ahead to a much improved 1938 campaign. That both UCLA and USC are expected to be in the top ten in the initial rankings certainly must come as a surprise if one only takes into account their respective 1937 records but each school certainly has it's strengths.

The Bruins finished last year with a 5-6 mark despite a nation's best 2,120 passing yards from quarterback Roy Zimmerman. Zimmerman returns for his junior season but will be pressed for playing time at quarterback from sophomore Jackie Robinson, who is also a member of the Bruins basketball squad. When Zimmerman, who in real life played 9 NFL seasons, was outstanding at times such as a 249 yard passing day in 34-0 shutout of Arizona or 176 yards and 3 touchdown passes in a 41-38 win over Cal. However, when Zimmerman was bad he was very bad including the season ending 94 passing yard, 2 interception performance in a 17-0 loss to USC.

If Zimmerman can be more consistent, or if Robinson can establish himself, the Bruins offense can take them a long way. Zimmerman has a solid running game at his disposal led by sophomore Tony Canadeo and junior Dante Magnani. Canadeo, who in real life played a decade in the NFL with Green Bay, gained 832 yards rushing last season. Magnani also played a decade in the NFL in real life but missed all of last season with an injury. Joe Aguirre was Zimmerman's favourite receiving target last year as a freshman when he led the Pacific Coast Conference with 52 catches. Highly touted incoming freshman tight end R.C. Pitts is also expected to contribute. Aguirre spent over a decade as an end in the NFL and CFL in real life while Pitts, who will also play on the Bruins basketball team, was a 2-sport star in college at Arkansas in real life before winning a gold medal as part of the US basketball team in the 1948 Olympics.

USC, who finished last season with a 4-7 record, had a strong defense but the offense could not get untracked as they failed to score more than 20 points in each of their final 9 games and were held to 10 or fewer points in 6 of them. The Trojans defense will be strong once again but they will need a much better season out of junior QB Granny Lansdell, who missed two games with injury last season and when he was healthy struggled with turnovers. In real life Lansdell played one season with the New York Giants after being selected in the first round of the 1940 NFL draft.

The strength of the USC defense will be it's linebacker trio of juniors Bill Fisk and Ambrose Schindler along with senior Boyd Morgan. In real life Fisk would play several years in the NFL and his son Bill Fisk Jr. would be an All-American offensive lineman and played on USC's 1962 national title team. Schindler was Rose Bowl MVP in 1940 and was drafted but never played in the NFL. He worked as a football official and coach as well as a Hollywood stuntman, appearing as the stunt double for the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. Boyd Morgan played one year in the NFL and then, like Schindler, worked as a movie stuntman.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL :PROFILE OF JOHN ISAACS

In my college basketball sim, which began with the 1901 season, John Isaacs is college basketball's all-time leading scorer, amassing 1834 points over his four seasons with UCLA.

In real life Isaacs did not play college basketball. He was born in Panama but raised in New York City. After leading his team to a New York High School basketball title he turned pro and played for several teams over the next 15 years before turning to coaching. Former NBAer Chris Mullin was one of his disciples. Isaacs was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.

The sim Isaacs joined the Bruins in 1930-31 and after averaging 16.1 ppg that season he was named the National Freshman of the Year. He would go on to be a 2-time first team All-American shooting guard and average 15.5 ppg over his 118 game college career.

As a freshman in a game against Santa Clara, Isaacs scored 36 of his team's 57 points establishing a new single game points record (later eclipsed by Dal Williams of Columbia who had 38 points in a 1936 game). Isaacs still holds spots 1 to 10, and 26 of the top 28 individual game scoring performances by a Bruin player and his 4 regular season points totals are the four highest single season scoring marks among UCLA players.

Despite Isaacs personal success the Bruins only made the NCAA tournament twice during his tenure. In Isaacs freshman season he led them to the final four after scoring 20 points in a 37-30 upset of top seed Ohio State in the Reginal Final. However, Isaacs had possibly the worst game of his college career in the National Semi-Final, going 0-for-11 from the field and managing just 1 point in a 49-41 loss to eventual National Champion Illinois. The next season - his sophomore year - the Bruins would reach the tournament but fall 64-48 to Wisconsin in the opening game despite 18 points from Isaacs.

Isaacs would go on to be selected 3rd overall by the Minneapolis Lakers in the 1934 Midwest Basketball Association draft. He would play four seasons with the Lakers and is presently a free agent after losing his starting job in 1937-38. The previous year his 16.9 ppg ranked him among the league leaders but he lost his starting job last year and his contract was not renewed by the Lakers after a last place finish this past season. He was All-League twice in his pro career.

There is a good chance his career is not over as he is almost certain to get a training camp invite from someone.

JUNE 6, 1938 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

MIZE FLYS HIGH FOR REDBIRDS

St Louis Cardinals first baseman Johnny Mize hit 3 more homeruns last week and with 19 after 47 games he is on pace for 62, which would be a new Major League record. It will be hard for Mize to keep it up all season, just ask Giants outfielder Mel Ott who was on track to match Babe Ruth's 1927 record of 60 homers for much of the summer last year before slumping in August and eventually finishing with 46.

Mize also has 51 rbi's, which puts him on a pace to finish with 167. That is a far cry from Hack Wilson's 1930 mark of 191 but would place him in the top ten all time for single season rbi's.

Mize(.369,19,51) and teammate Joe Medwick (.358,12,40) helped the Cardinals win 4 of 6 games last week to gain a little ground on the slumping New York Giants in the National League pennant race. The Giants were swept in a 3 game series midweek by the Boston Braves and there lead on defending champion St Louis is down to 5 games.

In the American League it is looking like the New York Yankees might clinch their third straight pennant by the all-star break. The Yankees have won 10 in a row to improve to 37-12 on the season and enjoy a 10 game lead on both Boston and Cleveland. After slow starts to the season both Lou Gehrig (.345,9,41) and Joe DiMaggio (.286,9,40) have both been hitting up while catcher Bill Dickey (.345,11,46) continues on what is shaping up to be the best season of his career.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: The May monthly awards went to Detroit's Charlie Gehringer (.381,8,25) and Boston's Lefty Grove (9-2, 2.50) for the top hitter and pitcher in the American League while in the National League it was Johnny Mize of St Louis and Giants pitcher Slick Castleman (7-3, 2.38). The Rookie of the Month winners were Cardinals reliever Ray Harrell (1-1, 3.20) in the NL and Browns second baseman Joe Gordon (.303,13,49).

Hal Trosky (.332,14,38) had a big game early in the week for Cleveland. The 25 year old first baseman drilled 3 homeruns in a game against Washington, but his Indians team still lost 9-7 to the Senators. It was the second 3 homer game of the season as St Louis Cardinals first baseman Johnny Mize turned the trick in April.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

The American Association's top two clubs each had another strong week as both Toledo and Kansas City went 5-1. The Mud Hens remain two games ahead of the Blues in the race for first place.

Toledo continues to lead the Association in both most runs scored and fewest runs allowed. The offense features plenty of balance with the only weak link being catcher Frank Reiber. Here is the Mud Hens batting order:
Code:
1 Lonny Frey 2B .397 3 24
2 Benny McCoy RF .317 9 31
3 Phil Weintraub 1B .270 7 34
4 Roy Cullenbine LF .306 6 40
5 Chet Laabs 3B .233 7 34
6 Willie Wells SS .307 2 31
7 Lennie Pearson CF .282 6 26
8 Frank Reiber C .217 0 5
Kansas City has the highest team batting average in the loop but the Blues have not been able to match the Toledo run production primarily because of a lack of power. On the other hand, the Blues starting pitching has been every bit the equal of Toledo.

Code:

KANSAS CITY ROTATION TOLEDO ROTATION
Al Hollingsworth 8-1 3.84 Gene Schott	8-2 2.91
Tiny Bonham 6-4 3.52 Archie McKain 5-3 3.04
Ted Kleinhans 5-6 3.21 Paul Derringer 8-3 3.94
Fred Gay 5-5 3.64 Lefty Smoll	3-6 4.46
Third place Minneapolis is trying desperately to stay in the race. The Millers have plenty of offense led by Buzz Arlett (.336,11,36), Ted Williams (.336,11,36) and Chuck Klein (.366,3,28) but pitching depth has been an issue. The Millers did suffer a blow this week when they learned catcher Otto Denning (.283,5,23) will be sidelined a month after suffering a concussion. The Millers have a big next 11 days ahead as their current road trip will see them visit Toledo for 3 games this week and Kansas City for four early next week.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION NOTES: Kansas City outfielder Ival Goodman (.264,2,26) had a big week as he broke out of a season long slump by going 14-for-28 to help the Blues win 5 of six games last week. It was the first such honour for the 29 year old outfielder who is in his second season in Kansas City after stints with Cincinnati and Philadelphia of the National League.

St Paul has not had a lot to cheer about but Saints fans learned that 27 year old second baseman Bill Norman was named the Association's Batter of the month for May. Norman (.340,9,28) hit all 9 of his homers this season in May, including 3 in one game against Indianapolis. The pitcher of the month was Toledo ace Gene Schott as the 24 year old went 6-1 in May to improve his season mark to 8-2 while Louisville's 19 year old shortstop Pee Wee Reese (.349,3,20) was named rookie of the month.

1938 US OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
TURNESA TAKES OPENING ROUND LEAD

Joe Turnesa shot an 8 under par 64 to take the lead after the opening round of the US Open. The 37 year old New York City native, who has two brothers also entered in the event, has a one shot lead on Gene Sarazen with 4 other golfers including Byron Nelson are 2 strokes off the pace.

Code:

In real life the 1938 US Open was held at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. The winner would be Ralph Guldahl, who would claim his second straight US Open championship. Guldahl would later win a third major, taking the Green Jacket at Augusta in the 1939 Masters. Gene Sarazen would finish second with Olin Dutra claiming third place.

EDIT - Note I did not have the actual course they played this event at so I just picked one I did have at random. It was The Woodlands and for some reason this course played terribly easy. In the real US Open the winning score for Guldahl was just even par so all of these negative numbers are not very realistic. But I decided from the beginning I would just sim each of these events (golf, Indy 500, Boxing title matches) once and live with the results.

US OPEN DAY TWO
HINES SETS COURSE RECORD AT US OPEN

Jimmy Hines shot a course record 61 to take over top spot in the United States Open after two rounds of play. The 35 year old Long Island native had 6 birdies on the back nine including 5 of the final six holes to take a one shot lead over Byron Nelson at the midway point of the event. In real life Hines won 9 PGA tour events but never won a major. In my sim he finished tied for 20th in this year's Masters Tournament. He also finished in a tie for 20th in last year's US Open in my sim.

Opening round leader Joe Turnesa carded a one under par 71 for Friday's round and is tied for third place, 5 strokes off the pace. The course has been playing exceptionally easy with 31 golfers at or below par through two rounds.

1938 US OPEN - SATURDAY'S RESULTS
NELSON TAKES HUGE LEAD INTO FINAL ROUND

Byron Nelson has been the model of consistency through three rounds of the US Open, carding rounds of 66,65 and in today's action a 64 which tied Bobby Cruikshank for the lowest round of the day. Nelson, who earlier this year won The Masters Championship in a playoff over Johnny Revolta, takes a 5 shot lead in to tomorrow's final round. Jimmy Hines, who entered the day with a one stroke lead on Nelson, shot a two under par 70 and remains the only golfer seemingly with any chance of catching Nelson.

1938 US OPEN

NELSON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT MAJOR

Byron Nelson coasted through his final round en route to victory in the US Open giving the 26 year old Texan his second straight major championship win. Nelson, who won The Masters in April, entered the final round with a 5 stroke lead on Jimmy Hines and when they day ended he had extended his bulge to 7 shots on Hines, who claimed second place. For Nelson, who would win 5 majors in real life, it puts him right on his real life pace. The real world Byron Nelson won the Masters and British Open in 1937 and his third major championship would come in the 1939 US Open.

In my sim Nelson came up short of winning a major last year. He did finish second to Gene Sarazen in the 1937 Masters and, after failing to reach the match play portion of the PGA Championship, would finish in a tie for 8th in both the US and British Opens of 1937.

Hines finished second in my US Open this year, with amateur Bobby Jones coming in third, 8 strokes back of the winner Nelson.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CARDINALS PULL EVEN WITH GIANTS ATOP NL

After enjoying a 14 game winning streak in May, a month that saw them go 21-8, the New York Giants have found June much less to their liking. The Giants have dropped 10 of their last 12 games including seven in a row and suddenly find themselves in a tie with the surging St Louis Cardinals atop the National League. New York's pitching staff, which had been so good in April and May, suddenly hit rock bottom as the club allowed 51 runs in their last 7 games - a span that saw Slick Castleman (7-5, 2.80) give up 12 runs in two losses while Roy Henshaw (4-1, 2.29) and Harry Gumbert (7-3, 2.98) were each knocked out of their starts very early in losses to Cincinnati and Brooklyn respectively.

Meanwhile the St Louis Cardinals reeled off seven straight victories before finally losing to Brooklyn on Saturday. During that stretch each of the Dean brothers came up with complete game wins over Cincinnati. Dizzy evened his record at 5-5 with a 2.56 era while Paul upped his to 8-2 with a 2.43 era. The Cardinals strength continues to be their offense with the top four hitters in the line-up all off to excellent starts. They are lead-off man Terry Moore (.308,6,33), Pepper Martin (.335,4,28), Johnny Mize (.368,21,54) and clean-up hitter Joe Medwick (.357,12,44).

The third place Chicago Cubs are also on a tear, moving to within a game and a half of the co-leaders thanks to an active 10 game winning streak. Chicago is led by a trio of veteran arms in Larry French (7-4, 2.42), Tex Carleton (7-4, 2.75) and Bill Lee (8-3, 3.99) and a balanced offense keyed by Stan Hack (.346,3,26), Frank Demaree (.332,8,32) and Phil Cavarretta (286,5,29).

The big story in the American League is the New York Yankees finally lost a game. It was quite a loss, getting shelled 10-1 by the lowly Browns on Tuesday but New York followed that up with 4 more wins and the Yankees have won 15 of their last 16 and are 31-4 since May 7th. Their lead atop the American League is already up to 12 games over both Boston and Cleveland.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: Pittsburgh pitcher Waite Hoyt joined the exclusive 250 win club last week as he pitched 7 innings in the Pirates 4-2 victory over the Braves in Boston. The 38 year old is 5-3 with a 4.69 era on the season. He becomes the 21st pitcher to reach the 250 win mark and is 250-185 for his career. The only active pitcher with more victories than Hoyt is Boston Red Sox pitcher Lefty Grove. After starting this season 9-2 the now 38 year old Grove is 275-122 for a career that has seen him pitch for the Athletics and Red Sox.

Cardinals outfielder Terry Moore was the National League player of the week after batting .333 with 3 homers and 9 rbi's in 5 games. Lou Gehrig of the Yankees, who enjoyed a 5-hit game and hit .529 last week with 3 homers, 5 rbi's and 9 runs scored captured American League honours.

One of the few stories worth watching with the St Louis Browns is the play of rookie infielder Joe Gordon. The first overall pick in the draft, the 22 year old has hit 15 homers in his first 52 MLB games and leads the American League with 56 rbi's while slashing .301/.388/.633 so far.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

In each of it's first two seasons as a "Major League" the American Association enjoyed a terrific race to the playoffs. In 1936 Minneapolis joined first place Milwaukee in the playoffs by finishing just 1 game ahead of Louisville and two up on Toledo for second place. Last year was just as exciting as it took until the final day of the season for Toledo to clinch second place and the right to play Kansas City in the American Series with the Mud Hens finishing just one game ahead of defending series champion Minneapolis. Columbus was also in the mix last year with the Red Birds ending up 4 games out of a playoff berth.

This season it is starting to look like there will be no such drama to end the campaign as the Toledo Mud Hens and Kansas City Blues are beginning to distance themselves from the pack. The Mud Hens swept a key 3 game series at home from third place Minneapolis and sending the Millers spiralling into a 5 game losing streak. While Toledo was winning 5 of 7 games last week the second place Kansas City Blues did one better, going 6-1 to creep to within a game of first place. Kansas City hosts Minneapolis in a key 4 game series this week while the Mud Hens have 4 against 5th place Columbus before embarking on a 17 game road trip that begins with 3 more against the Millers.

Not much went right for the Millers last week with one exception. 19 year old rookie outfielder Ted Williams enjoyed the most productive week of his young career, drilling 5 homers and driving in 11 runs. On the season the San Diego native is hitting .330 with a league high 14 homers and 47 rbi's.

BOXING

(The following is take from a 1938 news article I found. It was written by Braddock, who lost the heavyweight title to Louis in 1937, making his predictions for Louis' title defense.)
JIM BRADDOCK PICKS LOUIS TO TAKE SCHMELING

Former World Heavyweight champion James J Braddock says "Joe is too good, and not too old," and sees Joe Louis knocking out Max Schmeling in the sixth round of their World Heavyweight Title Fight in Yankee Stadium next week.

"Without any beating around the bush, Joe Louis will knock out Max Schmeling. I don't think it will take Joe any longer than six rounds to finish Max. Louis is a vastly improved fighter since his knockout by Schmeling in June, 1936. Schmeling cannot possibly be as good as he was that night. He won because of Joe's mistakes. Joe knows where he miscued, and he will not be guilty of the same mistakes again."

Braddock also says, regardless of the outcome, it will be the final heavyweight title fight of the year. "If Schmeling should happen to make me out a chump and win, he'll go right back to Germany with that title and it would take Uncle Sam's mint to entice him to risk it again in September. And Louis wouldn't have a thing to gain by fighting before the year is up. His movie, tune-ups earlier this year and the champion's share of the June fight have his income up so high, anything else he'd earn would go for income taxes. You can forget this talk about the winner meeting Maxie Baer in September. If Baer fights anyone it will be a return match with Tommy Farr."

Louis and Schmeling are set to fight June 22 at Yankee Stadium. Schmeling is the only fighter to have beaten the current World Champion.

CUBS ARE HOTTEST TEAM IN BASEBALL

The Chicago Cubs have reeled off 16 straight victories and find themselves just a game out of first place in the National League pennant race. It is not an unusual position for the Cubs, who challenged for the title each of the past two years only to fall just short on both occasions. What is impressive about the current streak is the first 10 wins came on the road before returning home to earn 3 game sweeps of both Brooklyn and Philadelphia at Wrigley Field last week.

Starting pitchers Larry French (9-4, 2.45), Tex Carleton (8-4, 2.68), Bill Lee (9-3, 4.08) and Bill Lohrman (4-2, 2.45) have been outstanding for the Cubs who have allowed the second fewest runs in the senior circuit.

The St Louis Cardinals have been nearly as good, winning 15 of their last 19 games and they sit in second place, a half game ahead of the Cubs and a half game back of first place New York. The Giants got back on track, going 6-1 against Boston and Cincinnati last week to erase the memory of the previous week's 7 game losing skid. Two-time reigning MVP Mel Ott (.258,13,45) is showing signs of coming out of his season long funk. In a 3 game stretch last week, the 29 year old outfielder belted 4 homers and drove in 9 runs.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL NOTES: St Louis Browns outfielder Sam West enjoyed a 6-hit game last week - the first such accomplishment since the Red Sox Mel Almada had 6 hits in a game against the Browns nearly two years ago. The 33 year old outfielder went 6-for-9 in a wild 17 inning marathon that his Browns ultimately lost 15-14 to the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox led 11-5 until the Browns scored 6 times in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the contest. Chicago broke the tie in the top of the 15th with 3 runs but the Browns prolonged the game with 3 of their own in the home half. West had 4 singles and 2 doubles in the game.

Don't look now but the New York Yankees have more firepower in their domination of the American League. After a slow start, 23 year old Joe DiMaggio is heating up. DiMaggio hit .577 last week (15-for-26) with 2 homers, 7 rbi's and 9 runs scored to earn the nod as American League player of the week. DiMaggio (.313,13,49) is hitting .444 in June with 5 homers and 16 rbi's in 15 games. NL honours went to 26 year old Pittsburgh shortstop Arky Vaughan (.324,4,26) who went 15-for-29 last week.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

The Toledo Mud Hens and Kansas City Blues are both on pace to break the previous record for wins in an American Association season. The 1936 Milwaukee Brewers finished with a .617 winning percentage but the top two teams this year are playing at a .667 (Toledo) and .633 (Kansas City) mark. They are also the only teams in the Association playing greater than .500 ball after the Minneapolis Millers continued to struggle.

The Millers have just 1 victory in their last 11 games including dropping 3 of 4 in Kansas City last week. That performance has dropped the Millers to 10 games behind the pace the Mud Hens are setting. Despite a slight hiccup in dropping a pair at home to last place Indianapolis last week, Toledo has been terrific in June, winning 11 of their last 15 games while the Blues have been almost as good, posting a 12-5 record for the month of June.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION NOTES: For the second time in 3 weeks the player of the week is Kansas City outfielder Ival Goodman (.282,4,36). The 29 year old went 10-for-20 last week with a pair of homers and 7 rbi's. After a slow start to the season (he hit just .217 in 13 April games), Goodman has been very hot at the plate and is batting .388 for the month.

The Blues Al Hollingsworth narrowly missed the first no-hitter in AA history (as a major league) when he allowed just 1 hit in a 6-0 win over Minneapolis. Hank Camelli's second inning single was the only hit surrendered by Hollingsworth, and he was erased by a double play so Hollingsworth, who is 10-1 on the season, faced just the minimum 27 batters.

MIDWEST BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION DRAFT

The Midwest Basketball Association conducted it's college draft this week and as usual there was an emphasis on players from the Western Conference with 6 of the 12 selections coming from those schools including two each from Wisconsin and Michigan. For the first time in draft history all 12 of the selections were "real" players with no fictional game generated collegians being selected.

The first pick went to the Milwaukee All-Stars and they tabbed Dartmouth guard Hyman Ginsburg with their first selection and went with another guard in the second round as well by drafting Jack Ozburn from Purdue. Ginsburg is a Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania native who played briefly in the National Basketball League in the late 1930s before serving in WWII. In the sim he was a three year starter at Dartmouth, averaging 8.2 ppg and 3.7 apg as a senior and helped lead the 23-10 Indians to the NCAA Final Four. His best game in the tournament was a 17 point effort in an opening round 48-40 win over Mississippi.

The National Champion Washington Huskies had 3 players selected led by 6th overall Paul Tobin to Fort Wayne. The Zollner Pistons also selected Tobin's teammate Edward Wisbar with the final pick of the draft while Indianapolis grabbed Talmadge Bennett from the Huskies with the 9th pick. Illinois forward Russell Ochsenhirt, who helped lead the Illini to the title game was selected 3rd overall by Columbus.

Finally it is also worth noting that Columbus drafted forward Hank Luisetti out of USC in the second round. The real life Luisetti played at Stanford and is in the National Basketball Hall of Fame after being a 3 time All-American and two time National player of the year. He is also credited for inventing the running one-handed shot, an early version of the jump shot, in an era when most players relied on the two-handed set shot.

Luisetti did not enjoy as prolific a college career in my sim. A San Francisco native, he elected to head south for his college ball in the sim by playing for USC. He was a part of the Trojans National Championship winner as a freshman in 1934-35 but he played sparingly that season. He started the next 3 years, helped USC to the elite eight as a junior and was a first team all-Pacific Coast Conference selection as a senior, averaging 8.5 ppg and 8.2 rpg that season.

June 22, 1938 World Heavyweight Title Fight : Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling

June 22, 1938 BOXING

LOUIS STOPS SCHMELING WITH TKO IN THE FIFTH

Joe Louis retained his World Heavyweight Championship by stopping the only man ever to beat him as a professional boxer, earning a TKO victory over Max Schmeling. The bout was not without some controversy as Schmeling's handlers were incensed at the referee's decision to stop the fight with just 2 seconds remaining in the fifth round.

Louis controlled most of the fight and won all but the third round according to the scorecards. It took just over a minute of the opening round for Louis to go on the offensive as he peppered Schmeling with blows after the initial feeling out period. Midway through the second round Schmeling was obviously hurt after absorbing an uppercut that caught him flush on the chin, but he remained on his feet and survived the round. Louis trapped Schmeling in a corner early in the third round and scored with several combinations but Schmeling, after landing a strong counter controlled the final two minutes of round three.

However, after starting round four quite aggressively, Schmeling got stopped in his tracks with a big right hand from the champion. From that point on Schmeling barely laid a glove on Louis as the champ dominated the fourth round and carried that momentum into round five where he sent Schmeling to the canvas with a blow in the opening minute. Schmeling regained his feet but absorbed blow after blow until referee Art Donovan stepped in and put an end to the bout with just 2 seconds remaining in the round.

With the victory, Louis' 4th since claiming the title a year ago from James J Braddock, the champion improves his record to 35-1.

The real-life Louis-Schmeling rematch attracted over 70,000 fans to a sold out Yankee Stadium including Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks, Gary Cooper and J. Edgar Hoover. Louis would win by TKO when Schmeling's corner would throw in the towel in the first round, after Schmeling had been knocked down twice. It was learned afterwards an early body blow from Louis had cracked several vertebrae in Schmeling's back.

In real life the next fight for Louis will not occur until January 25, 1939 when he faced Lightheavyweight champion John Henry Lewis in Madison Square Garden. It would be a first round knockout victory for the champ and the only time the veteran John Henry Lewis had been knocked out in his long career. In the sim I am debating whether or not to give Schmeling another rematch consider the moderately questionable decision to stop the bout with just seconds remaining in the round.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

CUBS WIN 22ND CONSECUTIVE GAME

The Chicago Cubs keep on rolling and are now just 4 wins from matching the longest winning streak in major league history. The 1916 New York Giants won 26 in a row and the Cubs have a chance to equal or surpass that mark next week. Chicago has won 22 straight games starting with a 2-0 shutout of Brooklyn on June 2 and continued with 3 game sweeps of both Cincinnati and Boston last week.

Those 22 wins have allowed the Cubs to climb from 9.5 games out of first place the day before the streak began to now having a 1.5 game bulge on second place St Louis atop the National League. The Cubs did have the benefit of feasting on second division clubs throughout the streak but they will face a challenge beginning today when they open a 3-game series in St Louis against the Cardinals. If all goes well the Cubs will look to equal the 1916 Giants record on Thursday in Pittsburgh.

We do have a 3-team race in the National League with the Giants also trying to stay in the picture but it is a much different story in the American League where you might as well give the New York Yankees their third straight pennant and call it day after the Yankees improved to 50-17 on the year and lead second place Boston by 12 games. This version of the Yankees is winning at a .746 clip, a better pace then even the 1927 squad that won an American League record 110 games.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL NOTES: Beyond the success of the Cubs and the Yankees there are some other very interesting story lines developing. Cleveland outfielder Roy Weatherly had 3 hits in each game of a weekend series against the White Sox, extending his hitting streak to 30 games. Weatherly, who leads the American League with a .386 batting average, is 11 games shy of equaling George Sisler's post-1901 record 41 game streak, set with the Browns in 1922. (Note - DiMaggio had his real life 56 gamer in 1941 but in the sim DiMaggio had a 33 game streak last season).

The Brooklyn Dodgers have had little to cheer about the last few years but 30 year old catcher Babe Phelps is raising eyebrows. Phelps (.409,3,31) had 8 hits in the last four games to keep his season average comfortably above .400. No one has hit at least .400 since the Giants Bill Terry batted .401 in 1930. Phelps does have a long ways to go however and in each of the past two seasons players (John Stone in 1936 and Mel Ott last year) flirted with .400 much of the year only to both fade in August.

Detroit outfielder Al Simmons hit his 300th career homer last week. Simmons, a lifetime .338 hitter, got his milestone moonshot off of White Sox starter Monte Stratton. The 36 year old, who is in his third season with Detroit after stops with the Athletics and White Sox, became just the sixth player to reach the 300 plateau and has hit ten of them so far this season.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION

The Toledo Mud Hens and Kansas City Blues each went 5-2 last week as they continue to stretch their lead atop the American Association standings. Only the third place Minneapolis Millers, who recovered from a 9 game losing streak to also win five of seven games last week, managed to hold their distance behind the front-runners. However, the third place Millers sit a full 10 games back of front-running Toledo and 8 back of Kansas City for the second playoff berth.

The Mud Hens only losses this week each came in extra innings as they fell 2-1 in 10 to Minneapolis and 15-14 in 11 innings to Columbus. The Hens did take two of three from each of those opponents before finishing the week with a pair of wins over last place Indianapolis including yesterday when they exploded for 7 runs in the 10th inning to beat the Indians 10-3.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION NOTES: Toledo's Benny McCoy had a week worth remembering. The 22 year old second year outfielder had 9 rbi's while batting .424 last week, allowing him to capture top player honours. On the season McCoy is batting .337 with 12 homers and 50 rbi's.

A pair of players enjoyed 5 hit games last week as veteran Kansas City first baseman Dale Alexander (.300,5,32) and Minneapolis second sacker John Mihalic (.252,2,24) each turned the trick.

Minneapolis suffered a scare when 19 year old outfielder Ted Williams (.322,16,52) left a game against St Paul on the weekend with a shoulder injury. The Millers are already hobbling with catcher Otto Denning and outfielders Fabien Gaffke and Buzz Arlett already hurt. Fortunately the news on Williams was good and he is listed as day-to-day.

Kansas City has a big concern on the injury front as well. 39 year old Ted Kleinhans, who was MVP and pitcher of the year last season after a 30-9 campaign, came out for the sixth inning of a game against Columbus yesterday but left with an as yet undiagnosed injury before facing a batter that inning. It is not known if he tweaked something after throwing a warm up pitch or had been trying to tough it through an injury suffered earlier in the contest. Kleinhans is not the pitcher he was a year ago, but at 6-8, 3.36 after 17 starts still a key piece of the Blues staff.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Here is a look at this year's top college football recruits. The top of the class is dominated by offensive players as each of the top 5 recruits and 8 of the top ten are on the offensive side of the ball led by quarterback Harry Connolly at number one. In real life Connolly's high school coach was Frank Leahy, later of Notre Dame fame, and Connolly would follow Leahy to Boston College where he would play his college ball. Connolly was selected in the 1943 NFL draft but served in the Navy during WWII and would play just one season of pro ball after the war.

The number 2 ranked recruit if Frank Sinkwich, who in real life was the winner of the 1942 Heisman Trophy and a National Champion at Georgia. He would be the first overall pick of the 1943 NFL draft by Detroit and was NFL MVP two years later.

Third is another quarterback in George Ceithaml, who would be a first team All Big Ten selection during his career at Michigan. He was drafted to the NFL but like many others joined the war effort instead and was part of the D-Day landing at Normandy. He would go on to coach college football but never played in the NFL.

Number 4 and 5 are both receivers. Steve Pritko, an end who played college ball at Villanova before spending 8 seasons in the NFL primarily with the Cleveland Rams while Nick Susoeff played four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers after a college career at Washington State.

The first defensive player in the top ten is DB Walt McDoanld, who played 4 seasons in the All American Football Conference after playing both College Football and Basketball at Tulane. He will also be a basketball recruit in this sim.

Number seven is Hal Prescott, a product of Abilene, Texas who was an end at Hardin-Simmons University and with 4 NFL teams. He will be a tight end in this sim. The third quarterback in our top ten is Glenn Dobbs, who also acted as a punter but will be strictly a QB in this sim. Dobbs played college ball at Tulsa and was a first round pick of the Chicago Cardinals but ended up playing in the AAFC and CFL instead. He is a member of the college football Hall of Fame.

Number nine is Tony Compagno, who played three seasons as a fullback (both offensive and defensive) for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He will be a CB in this sim. Rocco Canale is a lineman who makes the top ten recruit list. He was nicknamed the "Walking Billboard" because of his size and played 4 years in the NFL after playing college ball with top ranked recruit Connolly at Boston College.

Code:
     TOP TEN COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECRUITS
# NAME POS HOMETOWN
1 Harry Connolly QB Norwalk, Ct.
2 Frankie Sinkwich RB Youngstown, Oh.
3 George Ceithaml QB Chicago, Ill.
4 Steve Pritko WR Northampton, Pa.
5 Nick Susoeff WR Umapine, Or.
6 Walt McDonald FS Lowellville, Oh
7 Hal Prescott TE Abilene, Tx
8 Glenn Dobbs QB McKinney, Tx
9 Tony Compagno CB Daly City, Cal.
10 Rocco Canale T Watertown, NY
Other five-star recruits of note include QB Roy Mckay, who spent 4 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and set an NFL record at the time by throwing 4 touchdown passes, all to Don Hutson, in a single quarter of a win over Detroit. Mckay is a Texas native as is James Monroe "Jack" Russell, who was a top receiver in the AAFC, NFL and CFL for a number of years after playing college ball at Baylor.

NFL TRAINING CAMPS UNDERWAY

The defending NFL champion Baltimore Colts were one of 4 teams that opened training camp for the 1938 season over the weekend. The remaining 8 clubs will get underway this week. The preseason contests will begin two weeks time.

The experts predict both the Colts and their opponents in last season's title game to repeat as division winners. Baltimore defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 20-10 in the 1937 NFL Championship Game. San Francisco is picked to the runner up to Baltimore in the West with Washington getting the nod for second place in the East Division behind the Eagles.

The champion Colts, who open the preseason with a rematch against the Eagles, will once again be led by quarterback Ace Parker. Parker, who threw for 1246 yards last season -3rd most in the league - is a two-sport athlete as he also plays baseball. He appeared in 37 games (in our sim) for the 1937 Pittsburgh Pirates but after hitting just .122 he was released and is a free agent this year so his focus will be 100% on football. Parker may be pressured for his starting job by 7th round pick Bill Hartman. Hartman quarterbacked Georgia to a 10-2 season and a Sugar Bowl win over North Carolina State.

In real life Parker was a First Team All-American in 1936 at Duke before being selected by football's Brooklyn Dodgers in the second round of the 1937 draft. He had planned on playing baseball instead, a sport he also excelled in at Duke, and signed with the Philadelphia Athletics. However, after hitting just .179 over parts of two seasons in the American League Parker turned his attention fully to football. He joined the football Dodgers in 1937 and was a first team all pro the following year. His NFL career, which was interrupted for 3 years by WWII, lasted until 1946 and was the league MVP in leading the Dodgers to the 1940 NFL title.

(Note- In order to keep pace with our online baseball league and a short off-season I start the fall sports early. As a result the NFL's first of two preseason games will take place next week and then it is on to the regular season. College Football will also start it's season in late July, in conjunction with week one of the NFL.)

Wow! A 22-games streak is beyond luck. It's more like divine intervention!

A closer look at the Cubs streak

JUNE 27, 1938

A LOOK AT THE CUBS STREAK

One nice thing I have found in tying this multi-sport dynasty into an online OOTP league instead of making it fully solo like others I have done in the past is the online pace forces me to slow down my sim speed which in turn let's me look much deeper into the league. The Cubs amazing 22 game (and possibly counting) win streak is one worth exploring more as I never recall seeing a streak of such length in any past OOTP leagues I have ever been involved in - online or otherwise. Now it should be noted the Cubs, like all of MLB are computer controlled as the 8 human GM's in our league run American Association clubs but that makes the streak no less impressive.

Let's begin by taking a look at the National League standings on June 1.

The Cubs had just finished a few days in New York, splitting a doubleheader with the Giants before dropping two games in Brooklyn. The June 1 loss to the Dodgers, a 4-3 Brooklyn walk-off win on an rbi single from Jimmy Jordan, dropped the Cubs record to two games below .500 and they were now 9.5 games back of the front-running Giants who had enjoyed a 13 game winning streak of their own in mid-May. The start of the Cubs winning streak would coincide with a terrible stretch for the Giants- as New York, after splitting a Sunday doubleheader with the Cubs, would proceed to lose 7 of their next 9 games.

As for the Cubs, the streak began during a long road trip, one that started with the doubleheader vs the Giants and then 3 games at Ebbetts Field. Brooklyn took the first two before Chicago salvaged a game from the series on June 2 with Larry French tossing a 5-hitter to improve to 6-4 on the season. French went the distance in a 2-0 shutout victory with Frank Demaree 2-run first inning homer off the Dodgers Van Mungo accounting for all of the offense as Mungo was extremely sharp, limiting Chicago to 4-hits. The Cubs did not know it at the time, of course, but they would not lose again on the remaining 9 games of the road trip and even longer after returning home.

JUNE 3 - The Cubs began a 3-game series in Cincinnati with a 9-0 pasting of the Reds. Tex Carleton (6-4) was outstanding in throwing a 2-hit complete game shut out while Stan Hack, with his third homer of the season, and 2B Billy Rhiel, with a pair of doubles and 3 rbi's, led the offense.

JUNE 4- Chicago needed a run in their final at bat to earn a 3-2 victory over the Reds. Pinch-hitter Hersh Martin, with his first career MLB homer in 288 plate appearances, was the hero hitting a solo shot to snap the tie with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Reliever Clay Bryant, taking over for Bill Lohrman (3-2) who had pitched 8 strong innings before being pinch-hit for by Martin, got in to trouble in the bottom of the ninth allowing a pair of singles but he got Johnny Dickshot to end the game with a lazy flyball.

JUNE 5 - Stan Hack hit a 2-out, 2-run single in the top of the fourth inning to put the Cubs ahead 4-2 in a game that would end with that score. Bill Lee went the distance to improve his record to 7-3 on the season. A huge play in the 5th inning aided the Cubs as leftfielder Augie Galan threw a runner out at home to keep the Cubs lead at 2 runs.

JUNE 6 - Off to Boston and the streak reaches five games with a come from behind 4-3 win over the Braves. The Cubs plate a single run in each of the 7th and 8th innings to turn a 1-run deficit into a lead that would stand for the remainder of the game. Five different Cubs had 2 hits in the contest include Justin Stein, a seldom-used reserve who was spelling Stan Hack at third base for the game. Stein hit a 2-run double in the fourth inning to get Chicago on the scoreboard. Lon Warneke (3-6) went the distance for the win, scattering 11 hits in his best outing of the season. The 29 year old Warneke had struggled early in the season including his previous start against the Braves when he gave up 9 earned runs in 5 innings.

JUNE 7 - This one took 11 innings before Augie Galan broke a 3-3 tie with a single to score pitcher Larry French, who had hit a 1-out double. French was outstanding for 10 1/3 innings but after allowing a 1-out single was replaced by Clay Bryant who got the final two outs to preserve the 4-3 victory and give the Cubs their sixth straight win.

JUNE 8 - No drama in this one as the Cubs romp to a 9-0 victory. Tex Carleton (7-4) throws his second straight shutout and gets more than enough run support for the second start in a row. Another day of the reserves helping out as backup catcher Ken O'Dea enjoys a 4-hit, 2 rbi day while outfielder Phil Cavarretta also delivers four hits.

JUNE 9 - Next stop is Philadelphia and the streak reaches 8 games with a 4-1 victory. Bill Lohrman goes 8 and two thirds to improve to 4-2 with Bryant getting the final out to earn his second save in 3 days. Stan Hack had the big bat with 3 hits including a double and a triple. He also scored 3 runs.

JUNE 10 - The Cubs break a scoreless tie with 3 runs in the fourth inning and then cruise to a 9-1 victory over the Phillies. Every Cubs batter gets at least one hit including pitcher Bill Lee, led by Frank Demaree's 3 hit, 3 run performance. Lee scattered 9 Philadelphia hits to improve his record to 8-3.

JUNE 11 - More final at bat drama as the Cubs snap a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth inning when Augie Galan doubles in pinch-hitter Hank Leiber, who had led off the inning with a single. Galan would have 3 hits and 3 rbi's in the 5-4 victory over Philadelphia with Lon Warneke going the distance for the victory - the Cubs 10th in a row. With the Giants struggles the Cubs now find themselves in third place, just a game and a half back of both St Louis and New York.

JUNE 13 - Following an off-day for the long train ride from Philadelphia, the Cubs return to Wrigley to open a 12 game homestand with 3 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. The winning streak hits 10 with a 9-6 victory. Larry French gets the win to improve to 8-4 while Clay Bryant gets the final 2 outs for his 5th save of the season.

JUNE 14 - Stan Hack's 2-run double keys a 3-run 7th inning as the Cubs snap a tie and go on to win their 12th in a row, beating the Dodgers 5-2. Tex Carleton failed to get his third straight shutout, but did go the distance allowing 10 hits to run his record to 8-4.

JUNE 15 - The Cubs complete their 4th straight series sweep and get their 13th victory in a row with a 6-5 win over Brooklyn. The Dodgers made it closer than it should have been by scoring 3 times in the top of the 8th but Bill Lee hangs in there and goes the distance to improve to 9-3 on the year. Augie Galan and catcher Gabby Hartnett lead the Cubs with 2 rbi's each.

JUNE 16 - The game that sees the streak come closest to ending. Tied at 2 after 9 innings with Philadelphia, the visitors score a run in the top of the tenth to take the lead but an error and 3 singles in the bottom half allow the Cubs to plate 2 runs and take a 4-3 victory. Frank McCormick is the hero with the game-winning rbi on a single with 1 out.

JUNE 17 - Lon Warneke improved to 5-6 with a very strong, complete game 5-hitter. The contest was a real pitcher's duel with Chicago clinging to a 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of solo homeruns from Gabby Hartnett, before the Cubs added some insurance with 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to make the final 4-1 over the Phillies. The winning streak is now 15 games.

JUNE 18 - The streak hits 16 as Larry French (9-4) tosses a 5-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory to sweep the Phillies. Augie Galan tripled and scored twice while Gabby Hartnett continued his strong week with 2 hits and 2 rbi's.

JUNE 20 - After an off day the Cubs welcome the Reds to Wrigley Field and begin the 3 game set with a 6-2 victory. Cincinnati led 2-1 until the Cubs got a pair in the sixth thanks to a 2-run single from Chicago pitcher Tex Carleton. Chicago added 3 more in the bottom of the 8th to make closing out the game easier for Carleton, who improved to 9-4 on the year by going the distance and allowing just 4 Cincinnati hits.

JUNE 21 - The wind was blowing out at Wrigley as the Cubs took a 5-1 lead in the second inning and went out to beat the Reds 14-5. No homers for Chicago but plenty of hits as all 9 starters got at least one, led by SS Billy Jurges going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and 4 rbi's. Not Bill Lee's best effort, but he went all the way to earn his 10th victory of the season and the 18th in a row for the Cubs.

JUNE 22 - The bats get going again against the Reds as Chicago pounds out 16 hits in a 13-2 victory. Frank McCormick with 4 hits including a double and a triple, plus 3 rbi's leads the way, with Phil Cavarretta also driving in 3. Gabby Hartnett had 3 hits, drove in 2 and scored twice.

JUNE 23 - A new opponent as Boston comes to town, but a third straight double digit run output for the Cubs, who blast Braves pitching for 19 hits in a 15-3 laugher. McCormick has a second straight 4 hit game and drives in 5 runs, while reserve catcher Ken O'Dea also chips in 4 hits. The Cubs don't homer a lot but Augie Galan and O'Dea each get one on this day. Larry French (10-4) joins Bill Lee as Cub pitchers with 10 wins.

The Cubs 3 straight games of 10 or more runs is unusual for the club, which only reached double digits once before this season - May 10th when they beat the Phillies 13-12.

JUNE 24 - The offense was not as plentiful on this day, but it did not need to be as Lon Warneke was outstanding, holding the Braves to just 2 hits in a complete game 4-0 shutout victory. It was Warneke's 4th straight victory after starting the season 2-6.

JUNE 25 - The streak reaches 22 as the Cubs sweep their 7th consecutive series with a 3-2 win over the Bees. Boston took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 7th off of Tex Carleton but the Cubs tied the game in the bottom half on a Hersh Martin pinch-hit rbi single and took the lead in the bottom of the 8th when Carleton led off the inning with his first homerun since 1936. A double-play ball in the bottom half allowed Carleton to get his 10th win of the season as the Cubs prevailed 3-2.

Here is the Cubs June Schedule:

And here are the current standings after 22 straight Chicago wins. The Cubs have gone from a 9.5 game deficit to a game and a half lead atop the National League. Things will get much tougher next week as the Cubs try to prolong their streak and hold off the second place St Louis Cardinals. The St Louis series will be the first game for the Cubs during the streak that did not see them face a team that was in the bottom half of the standings.

And finally, here is the Cubs lineup and stats as of today, June 27, 1938.

Just a little bit more on the Chicago Cubs. I find it interesting that none of their everyday position players posted exceptional numbers during the streak and in fact many of them underperformed during that time compared to their recent numbers. I cannot get the 22 games of the streak only but can sort for the month of June which includes the one loss to Brooklyn before the streak began and you can see none of the totals really stand out.

Here are the slash lines for the 8 everyday players showing their totals during the streak (JUNE), for the season as a whole (opening day to June 27), and for last season.

Code:

CHICAGO CUBS JUNE ENTIRE SEASON LAST YEAR
NAME AVG/OBP/SLG AVG/OBP/SLG AVG/OBP/SLG
C Gabby Hartnett .311/.393/.554 .300/.400/.505 .325/.367/.502
1b Frank McCormick .333/.347/.441 .304/.319/.385 .327/.338/.428
2b Billy Rhiel .227/.288/.364 .251/.350/.400 .270/.351/.359
SS Billy Jurges .298/.352/.381 .330/.384/.405 .260/.320/.346
3b Stan Hack .298/.422/.440 .333/.420/.456 .353/.455/.485
OF Phil Cavarretta .366/.449/.488 .289/.367/.427 .271/.304/.382
OF Frank Demaree .269/.303/.376 .315/.354/.475 .308/.354/.418
OF Augie Galan .278/.406/.354 .284/.395/.407 .319/.421/.470
So yoy can see the streak is certainly not a case of a majority of their hitters getting hot at the same time. In fact it is almost the opposite as all but Hartnett and McCormick underperformed during the streak compared to their overall performance this year. The one player who was exceptionally hot during the streak was back-up catcher Ken O'Dea who went 11-for-18 in June with a slash line of .611/.632/.889 but he started just 4 games.

Pitching was a different story as the Cubs starters all were outstanding during the sim.

Tex Carleton went 5-0 with a 1.00 era and a 0.82 WHIP and threw a pair of shutouts while allowing more than 6 hits in just one start. This after starting the season 5-4, 3.42. He completed all 5 of his starts during the streak.

Larry French also made 5 starts, completing 4 of them and posting a 2.17 era but he was pretty good before the streak, going 5-4 with a 2.67 era.

Bill Lee completed all 4 of his starts with a 3.25 era after going 6-3, 4.63 in April and May.

Bill Lohrman made 4 starts and had a 1.62 era while going 3-0 after starting the season with a 2-2 record and a 3.05 era. He did not complete any of his starts during the streak but did get into the 8th inning in each of them. While he cut down on the earned runs his 1.08 WHIP was the exact same in May as what he posted during the streak.

The big improvement was from Lon Warneke. A 19 game winner a year ago, the 29 year old had a rough start to the season at 2-6, 6.83. However, he turned it around during the streak with 4 starts ranging from good (4 runs on 9 hits in a 5-4 win June 11th to outstanding in a 4-0, 2 hit shutout of Boston on the 24th). Warneke was 4-0 with a 2.00 era during the streak.

With all of those complete games the bullpen was hardly used with Charlie Root pitching just 2 innings (and getting credited with one of the wins) while Clay Bryant made 5 appearances totalling 3 innings and earned 4 saves without surrendering a walk or an earned run.

CUBS STREAK SNAPPED AT 22 GAMES

The Chicago Cubs improbable winning streak ends at 22 games after the Cubs suffered a 4-3 loss in extra innings to the St Louis Cardinals. The hometown Cardinals jumped on Chicago starter Bill Lee early as Johnny Mize worked the 28 year old for a walk with two out in the first inning and then Joe Medwick followed with his 17th homerun of the season to give the Redbirds an quick 2-0 lead.

Chicago would scratch back with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings off of St Louis starter Dizzy Dean to tie the game. Billy Jurges singled in Gabby Hartnett, who had led off the fourth inning with a double, to score the first Chicago run and an inning later Stan Hack scored on a wild pitch to tie the game after he had doubled and moved over to third base on a ground out.

St Louis pitcher Dizzy Dean atoned for his wild pitch quickly, by hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to put St Louis ahead 3-2 but Chicago would pull even again in the 8th when a Hartnett sacrifice fly plated Augie Galan.

Dean set the Cubs down in order in the top of the tenth. The Cardinals won it in the home half after Terry Moore and Pepper Martin hit back to back one out singles to chase Lee from the game. Reliever Clay Bryant, who had come up with 4 saves during the winning streak, got Mize to pop out for the second out of the inning and then induced a ground ball from Medwick but Chicago shortstop Ben Geraghty booted it to load the bases. Unnerved, Bryant then walked George Meyer on 4 pitches to bring in the winning run and put an end to both the game and the Cubs winning streak.

Geraghty, a backup infielder who rarely plays, was only in the game because starting shortstop Billy Jurges had been pinch-hit for in the 9th inning.

No changes atop the American League as the New York Yankees remain 12 games up on second place Boston after winning 5 of 8 games this week including a split of 4 games with the Red Sox.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION
LOSS OF KLEINHANS BIG BLOW TO BLUES

Despite winning 9 of their last 11 games the mood in Kansas City was down after it was learned that veteran pitcher Ted Kleinhans is done for the season, and perhaps his career. The 39 year old, who pretty well came out of nowhere a year ago to win 30 games and lead the Blues to the American Association title, has suffered a torn rotator cuff and at his age there is concern it may be career ending. Kleinhans was not as dominant this season as he was a year ago, but still was a key piece of the Blues outstanding pitching staff. He posted a 6-8 record with a 3.36 era in 17 starts this season.

The Blues will likely now rely on Al Piechota to fill Kleinhans spot in a rotation that also includes Al Hollingsowrth (11-2, 3.52), Tiny Bonham (9-6, 3.39) and Fred Gay (11-6, 3.73). The 24 year old Piechota was 1-2 with 4 saves out of the Kansas City pen as a rookie last season. This year he is 4-2 with a 6.20 era in 18 appearances and he allowed 7 earned runs in each of his two starts this season including yesterday when he was chased after just two innings in a 10-4 loss to Milwaukee.

Kansas City still trails first place Toledo by 2 games but a more pressing concern for the Blues now that they have lost a key pitcher will be holding off Minneapolis for the final playoff spot, although the Blues presently enjoy an 8.5 game lead on the third place Millers.

JULY 1, 1938
NHL UPDATE -THE COACHES

To help familiarize you with the National Hockey League portion of this sim here is a look at the 7 existing NHL coaches.

BOSTON - The Bruins just recently handed the reigns to veteran Lester Patrick. A four time coach of the year, the 61 year old Patrick is 3rd all-time in career coaching victories and has had stops with the Ottawa Senators, Hamilton Tigers, New York Americans and Montreal Maroons before landing in Boston. 53 year old Art Ross has been the Bruins general manager since they entered the league.

CHICAGO
- Dick Irvin, the Montreal coaching legend in real life, has coached the Black Hawks each of the past three seasons after beginning his career with a year and a half in Boston and then moving to Ottawa for the Senators final season. Frank Patrick, one of Lester's brothers, has been the Chicago GM for over a decade after beginning his career with the Vancouver Millionaires of the old Western Hockey League and making a stop with the Quebec Bulldogs/Hamilton Tigers franchise.

DETROIT - Herb Gardiner is the 47 year old coach of the Red Wings and has been at the helm since 1929-30. He previously spent two plus seasons with the Montreal Maroons and sits 4th all-time in career victories but has never won a Stanley Cup. The Red Wings GM is real life Toronto architect Conn Smythe, who has held the position since late in the 1926-27 season.

MONTREAL- Eddie Powers took over the Montreal job 3 years ago with his previous NHL experience being 2 and a half seasons with Ottawa at the start of the decade. Powers was coach of the year in his first full season in Ottawa but, so far at least, has not been able to get the Canadiens to a Cup. Tommy Gorman, after over a decade and 3 Stanley Cups in Ottawa, took over as General Manager of the Habs three years ago.

NEW YORK AMERICANS- Jack Adams presently holds the dual role of coach/GM with the Americans. He has been in charge of the club since 1928-29 and is one of just 6 coaches to amass at least 200 career victories. He coached the club to a Stanley Cup title in 1932.

NEW YORK RANGERS - Unfortunately even with a large number of real staff available FHM still allows fictional head coaches and one of these is Shane Kulak, who has been the Rangers bench boss since 1931-32 and led them to their only Stanley Cup in 1935. The Rangers GM is Frederic McLaughlin, who in real life was the first owner of the Chicago Black Hawks.

TORONTO- In real life Dick Carroll coached the Toronto Arenas to the Stanley Cup in 1917 but was fired after a disappointing season the next year. In this sim, Carroll is still going strong behind the Leafs bench and is the winningest coach in NHL history, guiding the team to 9 Cups while being named coach of the year 5 times. The original Toronto GM in real life was Charles Querrie, and he is still the General Manager of the club in this sim and has been since the league began in 1917.
