The Georgetown Hoyas had something to celebrate today even though they dropped a 6-2 decision to Nebraska. The reason -- the splendid slugger Kurt Whetzel hit his 400th career homer in today's contest at Shirley Povich Field.

"I'm fortunate to be here," Whetzel told the media after the game. "The Hoyas have a classy organization and some great fans. Homer #400 was for them."

In his 1019-game career Whetzel is batting .288 with 197 doubles, 14 triples, 400 home runs and 926 RBIs. He has stolen 16 bases and scored 781 times.

The Missouri Tigers were simply overmatched by the Tennessee Volunteers in the Wild Card.

The end result was a sweep, as Tennessee has cruised to the Regionals, with the final win coming at Lindsey Nelson Stadium by a score of 8-7.

"We're clicking and running on all cylinders at the moment," said Melvin Alvarenga, who was named MVP of the Wild Card. "We're a dangerous team when we play like this."

Many baseball pundits expected a close series in the American League Wild Card. It turned out quite a bit different.

The Cal Poly Mustangs swept aside the Iowa State Cyclones to advance to the Regionals, winning the final game by a 12-5 score at Baggett Stadium.

The series MVP was shortstop Arnold Hauser, who hit .556 with a .556 on-base percentage. He had 4 home runs, drove in 9 RBI and scored 5 runs.

"We expected this series to go right down to the wire, so to sweep is a bit of a surprise," he said. "But we'll take it."

It's a sweet sweep for the Louisville Cardinals and they have won the Wild Card. The Villanova Wildcats were not able to keep pace with the Cardinals and dropped the series in short order, losing 12-1 in the deciding game.

"This wasn't really the effort we hoped for," said Villanova manager Eric Keskey.

The Texas A&M Aggies are off to the Regionals after an exciting Wild Card triumph.

Texas A&M downed the Texas Tech Red Raiders, but needed the entire series to do so, with a 6-5 win tonight at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park wrapping up the series 2-1.

"It's every guy in this room that made this happen. Without us all pulling in the same direction, we don't win this series," said Dan T Murphy, who earned MVP honors for a standout offensive series.

Murphy put up a .267 with a .313 on-base percentage in the series. He also had 2 home runs, drove in 5 runs and scored 4 runs himself.

The Washington State Cougars made it look easy and are heading to the Regionals.

They have ousted the Memphis Tigers in a sweep, the final win coming by a 7-6 score, clinching the 2-0 series win.

"Everything's clicking for us right now," said Antonio Rincon, who was named MVP for the series.

Rincon hit .556 with a .636 on-base percentage. He added 1 home runs, drove in 3 RBI and scored 2 runs.

Mark one up for the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

In the crucial final game, they put away the Sacramento State Hornets 5-2 at Patterson Baseball Complex to win the Wild Card, 2-1 and advance to the Regionals.

Although his team came up short, Sacramento State's Oswaldo Arcia was named the series MVP, with many of the league media feeling the series would have been over much sooner if not for his contributions.

"Arcia did a lot to keep Sacramento State in it, no doubt about that," said Bulldogs manager Ryan Brown.

Trueblood Hurls No-Hitter Against Trojans:

NC State is abuzz in the wake of a masterful no-hitter by Mike Trueblood.

The 32-year-old hurler was dominating against the USC Trojans, leading the Wolfpack to a 6-0 win at Doak Field today.

"I could tell early on that it was going to be a long day for us," USC manager David Johnson said afterward. "He made us look real bad. He was that good. And still going strong at the end of the game."

Trueblood had 16 strikeouts and gave up 5 walks en route to the no-hitter.

"Yeah, this was a special day for me," Trueblood said. "I had my good stuff and good movement. Good location, too. Even when I made a mistake, I got away with it today."

Thus far this season Trueblood has posted a 17-3 record, started 32 games, struck out 302 batters in 206 innings and compiled a 2.45 ERA.
