Atlanta Flames

In 1971, the Atlanta Flames were founded to keep the upstart WHA out of the southern market. The team, set to start play in 1972, was named as an homage to General Sherman's burning of Atlanta during the Civil War. Although successful on the ice (making the playoff 6 of 8 seasons), the Flames failed to draw an audience. Failure to make a television deal sealed their fate. On May 21, 1980 it was announced the team was sold & relocated to Calgary, AB. The Atlanta Flames logo continues to live on as the "A" signifying the Calgary Flames' alternate captain.

World Hockey Association

Announced in 1971, the WHA was founded with 12 teams playing in either underutilized markets or established NHL markets they believed could host a second team. A foreshadowing of things to come, four teams relocated before playing a game. The Calgary Broncos relocated to become the Cleveland Crusaders; the Dayton Arrows became the Houston Aeros; the Miami Screaming Eagles became the Philadelphia Blazers; and the San Francisco Sharks became the Quebec Nordiques. During the duration of the league (1972-79) the league played in 24 markets. Of those 24 markets, the NHL has or had teams in all of them except Baltimore, Birmingham, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, or San Diego.

New England Whalers

On of the charter members, the New England Whalers started their WHA in Boston. Like other teams in NHL markets, the Whalers shared the Boston Garden with the Bruins. The team would move to Hartford for the second half of the 1974-75 season. The Whalers were one of the most successful teams in the WHA - winning the inaugural AVCO Cup in 1973 and making the playoffs every year in the league. In 1979 they were one of four teams absorbed by the NHL who, do to a protest from Boston, forced them to drop the New England part of their name in favor of Hartford. Success did not follow the team to the NHL and they ultimately relocated to become the Carolina Hurricanes.

Fun Fact: the team got its name from being the New England WHA-lers

Edmonton Oilers

One of the WHA's charter franchises, the Oilers rebranded as the Alberta Oilers when the Calgary Broncos relocated prior to the start of the league. Initially meant to split games between Edmonton & Calgary, the team spent most of their first season in Edmonton. They would change their moniker to reflect as much. Although they were a mediocre franchise, they were one of the WHA teams that drew well. Of the four WHA teams absorbed by the NHL, the Oilers are the most successful (5 Stanley Cups in the '80s) and the only one still in their original city.

Fun fact: the Oilers logo was designed with the understanding the team would partner with Getty Oil. The partnership fell thru but the logo remained.

Thanks for these, I'm the uniforms to my league as they come out! I see that you're on the WHA era now. I don't see the NY Rangers or Boston Bruins on your earlier pages, however.

Bruins are in the Retro forum (tho I could easily make a few if you'd like) As for the Rangers, I was planning to do their Liberty 3rds when I got to the '90s But, again, could easily make a few if you like

If you could make them and it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate it! Where's the retro forum? I'm still getting used to navigating my way around some areas of the site.

Los Angeles Sharks

Initially called the Los Angeles Aces, the team adopted the Sharks moniker when the San Francisco Sharks relocated to become the Quebec Nordiques. The team had a successful inaugural season - finishing 3rd in their division - but could not replicate it in season two. That coupled with the growing popularity of the Los Angeles Kings led to the team relocating to Detroit before the 1974-75 season.

Chicago Cougars

A charter WHA member, the Chicago Cougars lasted 3 seasons in the WHA. They had only one successful season (1973-74) but their time in the playoffs was marred by a PR nightmare known as the Peter Pan Incident. After ownership failed to secure land to build a new arena, the Chicago Cougars folded after the 1974-75 season.
