For some reason, Dan Petry's 1980 rookie card was a much sought after prize among my friends in Los Angeles in the early 80's. Turned out to be an average pitcher, but man, did we all want that card. #46 his whole career.

You're preaching to the choir about Key. He was one of the key (no pun intended) players who helped the Yanks reassert themselves as a force in the AL East back in 1993-94. He was the consummate professional and the first legitimate ace the Yanks had had since the aforementioned Ron Guidry's career took a downturn after the '85 season.

In fact, when the magic number is down to 22, something tells me we'll be seeing the Key Man again in this thread.

They are gone, but will never be forgotten, and someday they may return. Steve Rogers #45 of Nos Amours, the Montreal Expos (#45 before some kid named Pedro arrived in Montreal). As an aside, he wound up squeaking into the HoF in my 41 year random debut historical league - 8 All-Star selections, 3 Cy Youngs, 1 Ozzie Smith Award (Gold Glove), and an ALCS MVP Award. Damn good pitcher IRL. Very underrated. Not HoF good, but damn good. Wish he could've lasted longer than 13 years, but he basically pooped out after his age 33 season.

The magic number is now 44. To any Yankee fan of my generation, that number can mean only one player: Mr. October, Reggie Jackson. He was one-man melodrama both on and off the field who had a swing that was talior-made for Yankee Stadium. He was a man who talked the talk, and walked the walk.
