Colorado Rockies (25-17 .595 tied for 1st place in the NL West) at
Portland Beavers (17-24 .415 7.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West)

Rob Green, Col (31 R 0-0 11.25 11.3-2.3-6.8-4.5 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Steve Mulder, Por (28 L 0-0 0.00 1 SV 8.6-0.0-4.3-5.4)

Green has only had 1 start. He was 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA in AAA.

This will be Mulder's first start this season. Something tells me his ERA will not be 0.00 after this game....

Lineups: Pos Name (Age Bats BA-HR-RBI-OPS)
COLORADO
1: SS Tony Kraft (29 R .295-2-25-.709 in 190 AB)

PORTLAND
1: LF Frank Wiginton (30 S .279-2-14-.782 in 104 AB)
2: CF Rich Babbin (36 L .304-5-16-.868 in 115 AB)
3: RF Lebron Williams (32 L .280-4-18-.761 in 150 AB)
4: 1B Ernesto Gonzelez (32 L .200-0-5-.685 in 10 AB)
5: 3B Jim Eighmy (27 R .281-0-2-.753 in 32 AB)

7: SS Rick Ferrell (25 R .063-0-1-.121 in 16 AB)
8: C John McIvor (30 R .250-0-3-.618 in 32 AB)
9: P Steve Mulder (28 L Has not batted this season)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Weather: 58 deg. Clear Skies with a 13 MPH wind blowing right to left.

Tony Kraft grounds out to short. Jesus Lopez beats out an infield hit. Bobby Manzano walks. Julio Chapa flies out to deep left center. 2 outs. Jeff Johnson grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the 1st: Frank Wiginton grounds out to 2nd. Rich Babbin grounds out to 1st. Lebron Williams grounds a 3-2 pitch into center for a hit. Full count to Ernesto Gonzelez and he takes ball four. Jim Eighmy rewards us for promoting him to the #5 hole by striking out on three pitches....

Top of the 2nd: With 1 out, Melvin Mendoza grounds a hit to left and then Benton Bedard draws a four-pitch walk. P Rob Green disdains the bunt and grounds a hit into right and Mendoza scores. 1 to 0, Rockies. Tony Kraft grounds one to 2nd and Fred Pariseau makes a bum throw. E-4. Bases loaded with 1 out. Jesus Lopes grounds a 2-2 pitch up the middle for a hit and 2 runs score and the runners move up to 2nd and 3rd on the throw to the plate. 3 to 0, Rockies. The Bullpen is activated. Bobby Manzano grounds out to 2nd an a run scores. 4 to 0, Rockies. Julio Chapa flies out to left to end the inning.

Top of the 3rd: Jeff Johnson leads off with a double and scored on a hit by Benton Bedard. 5 to 0, Rockies.

Bottom of the 3rd: P Steve Mulder leads us off with a hit up the middle and then scores on a triple by Frank Wiginton! 5 to 1, Rockies. That is Frank's 5th triple of the season. Wiginton scores on a fly ball by Rich Babbin. 5 to 2, Rockies.

Top of the 4th: After the first three Rockies reach on hits to load the bases up, the Call to the Bullpen is made: RHP Greg Richey. He ALWAYS seems to give up a hit to the first batter he faces and give runs to the pitcher preceding him, but hardly ever any to himself.... Julio Chapa grounds a hit to left and 2 runs score, but we throw Bobby Manzano out at 3rd and he is hurt and has to leave the game. 7 to 2, Rockies. It seems it is a pulled rib cage muscle that will keep him on the sidelines fro about a week.

Bottom of the 4th: Jim Eighmy walks and is erased on a fielder's choice by Rick Ferrell. We are tickled pink it was not another double play! With two outs, John McIvor doubles to left center and Ferrell scores from 1st. 7 to 3, Rockies.

Top of the 8th: New Pitcher: RHP Neville Carter. I thought he would get through an appearance without a run allowed when He struck out Jesus Lopez for the 2nd out after giving up a 1-out hit to Tony Kraft. But 1B Ron Newberry doubles down the right field line and Kraft scores from 1st. 8 to 3, Rockies.

Bottom of the 9th: New pitcher: RHP Tom Bergman, their current closer. 8.76 ERA in 12.1 IP, but he is 2-0. Must be vultured victories. 7-1 in save opportunities, if you can believe it. Rick Ferrell leads off with a walk and John McIvor doubles, but comes up lame and has to come out of the game. No word from The Meister on what it could be, which is never a good sign. Joe Hartin goes in to run for him. Pinch-Hitter: RHB Masanori Ishii. He strikes out on three pitches. Frank Wiginton strikes out.... Rich Babbin up and a Wild Pitch! Ferrell scores. 8 to 4, Rockies. Babbin doubles down the left field line and Hartin scores. 8 to 5, Rockies. New pitcher: RHP William Rojas. 9.39 ERA in 23 IP. 36 hits. Wanna bet that he ends the game right here? Passed Ball. Lebron Williams strikes out.... You just lost that bet....

Lost - 8 to 5

We had 10 hits and made 1 error.
The Rockies had 15 hits and made no errors.

Steve Mulder (L 0-1) went 3+ innings, allowed 7 runs (6 earned), 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Okay, he is back to being a situational lefty in the pen.
RHP Greg Richey pitched 1 inning, allowed 2 hits, scoring runs against Mulder, but allowed none against himself.
RHP Edmondo Buenaventura went 3 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. No runs!
RHP Neville Carter went 2 innings, allowed 1 runs, 2 hits and struck out 2.

Rob Green (W 1-0) went 8 innings, gave us 3 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.
RHP William Rojas (SV 3) faced 1 batter and struck him out. He has a 9.26 ERA now, but is 3 for 4 in save opportunities. Not awesome, but better than you'd expect from a 9.26 ERA.

LF Frank Wiginton hit a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Rich Babbin hit a double and had 2 RBIs. RF Lebron Williams had 3 hits, but no runs or RBIs. 3B Jim Eighmy hit a double and drew a walk. SS Rick Ferrell did little again, but did draw a walk and scored 2 runs. C John McIvor had 3 hits with 2 doubles and an RBI, but who knows when he will play again?

For the Rockies, 2B Jesus Lopez had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Bottom of the 1st: Frank Wiginton starts us off the opposite of how the Rockies started by walking on four pitches. Rich Babbin taps on towards 1st and 1B Ron Newberry fields it cleanly and flips the ball to P Enrique Espinoza who is covering the bag, but Espinoza drops the ball! E-1. Lebron Williams to the plate. Wild Pitch! 2nd and 3rd with no outs! Williams flies out to left and Wiginton tags up and beats the throw to the plate. 1 to 0, Beavers! Full count to Masanori Ishii and he grounds out to 3rd. 2 outs. Jim Eighmy grounds an 0-2 pitch into left for a hit and Babbin scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Full count to Fred Pariseau and with Eighmy running on the pitch, Pariseau dumps a hit to right and Eighmy easily goes to 3rd. Rick Ferrell grounds out to 1st, 3-1, and P Espinoza catches the toss this time to end the inning.

Top of 2nd: Julio Chapa leads off by lining out to right and Lebron Williams sits down in the grass and motions for the trainer.... They exit the field together and disappear into the locker room and never say a word.....Rich Doody heads out to right.

RHP Ron Beckman (SV 4) went 2 innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

Enrique Espinoza went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs (1 earned, but the error was his own), 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. He threw a WP.

LF Frank Wiginton had a hit and a walk and scored 2 runs. CF Rich Babbin had 2 hits and scored a run. 2B Fred Pariseau had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. SS Rick Ferrell had 2 hits and stole a base. 3B Joe Hartin hit a double.

For the Rockies, RF Jeff Johnson had 3 hits. LF Benton Bedard hit his 8th home run of the season. He must be the best #8 hitter in baseball....

An off day, but The Meister finally opened his mouth about C John McIvor and gave me the scoop on Lebron Williams. McIvor tore his calf muscle. Tore it. He is out until the middle of September at least. Williams messed up his thumb and will be out about three weeks. Both players were put on the Disabled List and C Ron Charles (30 R) and RF Jerry Alston (28 L) were called up from Indianapolis (AAA).

Also, the first results from the All-Star balloting have been released and no Beavers are anywhere to be seen.

We are in San Francisco to play a short 2-game series with manager George Harper (61) and his Giants. They split a 4-game series at Los Angeles (N) over the weekend. We are 1-4 against them so far this season and they beat us 2 of 3 in Portland the weekend before last. They are 4th in the National League in scoring with 4.9 runs per game (Portland is up to #15 with 3.7!). They are 2nd in runs allowed with 3.8 per game (Portland is #13 with 4.8). Their pitchers have walked the fewest batters and have the 3rd lowest batting average in the league.

Portland Beavers (18-25 .419 8.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
San Francisco Giants (26-18 .591 1 GB in 3rd place in the NL West)

Billy Rueter, Por (28 R Major League Debut 3-0 2.25 7.9-0.4-4.1-6.6 in AAA H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs John Chase, SF (32 R 3-3 3.13 8.6-0.8-1.2-6.4)

Chase leads the NL in fewest walks per 9 innings. We have not faced him yet. He is no relation to our own Ricky Chase. John is from Florida and Ricky is from San Diego.

When you are 28 and making your Major League Debut, as Billy Rueter is today, you probably are not on the fast track to the Hall of Fame....

Newcomer Jerry Alston gets the nod in right field to replace Lebron Williams over Rich Doody for two reasons: 1) he is much the better fielder. Doody is not really a right fielder and is not all that great in left, either. 2) Doody has been awesome off the bench as a pinch-hitter (7 for 12 - .583), and I like having him there as a security blanket. Also, Alston has speed and can lead off and allow Frank Wiginton and Rich Babbin move down to spots where they can maybe drive in more runs, assuming Alston gets on base to give them something to drive in.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age Bats BA-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: RF Jerry Alston (28 L First Game .374-1-18-.901 in 99 AB in AAA)
2: LF Frank Wiginton (30 S .274-2-15-.779 in 113 AB)
3: C Masanori Ishii (32 R .292-4-17-.775 in 144 AB)
4: CF Rich Babbin (36 L .311-5-18-.877 in 122 AB)
5: 1B Ernesto Gonzelez (32 L .200-0-5-.635 in 15 AB)
6: 3B Jim Eighmy (27 R .282-0-3-.762 in 39 AB)
7: 2B Rickey Clayton (31 R .232-0-3-.581 in 56 AB)
8: SS Rick Ferrell (25 R .130-0-1-.290 in 23 AB)
9: P Billy Rueter (28 R Major League Debut .118-0-0-.235 in 17 AB in AAA)

SAN FRANCISCO
1: CF John Anderson (27 S .242-4-10-.711 in 153 AB)
2: SS Herman Taylor (27 R .324-1-12-.736 in 182 AB)
3: LF Billy Griffin (34 L .261-3-15-.750 in 138 AB)
4: C Stan Brown (29 R .298-10-27-.978 in 151 AB)
5: 3B Pat Crum (34 L .280-5-19-.842 in 118 AB)
6: RF Juan Abundis (28 R .302-3-14-.875 in 86 AB)
7: 2B Dave Guillory (25 L .313-6-36-.834 in 144 AB)
8: 1B Duane McCann (28 L .258-2-6-.843 in 31 AB)
9: P John Chase (32 R .176-0-0-.458 in 17 AB)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Weather: 52 deg. Clear Skies with a 17 MPH wind blowing in from center.

Jerry Alston shows his speed right off the bat by legging out an infield hit! Frank Wiginton lines a hit to left. Masanori Ishii mashes one to left center that looked like a sure homer off the bat, but the wind kills it and it is caught on the warning track. Alston tags up and moves to 3rd. Rich Babbin flies out to right and Alston tags and scores without a throw. 1 to 0, Beavers! Ernesto Gonzelez flies out to center.

Bottom of the 1st: John Anderson lines an 0-2 pitch to center for a hit. Herman Taylor grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! #9 on the season for him. He'd fit right in on the Beavers! Billy Griffin blasts a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a double. 3-2 pitch to Stan Brown, their most dangerous hitter, and he pops out to short!

Bottom of the 4th: So far, Rueter has been in command, but his questionable control rears its ugly head this inning. He walks Billy Griffin and Stan Brown to lead things off. A wild pitch send them up to 2nd and 3rd. Full count delivery to Pat Crum and it misses to load the bases up and the Giants did not need to hit the ball at all. Warm the pen up! 3-1 pitch to Juan Abundis and it misses for the 4th walk in a row to force in a run.... Tie game: 1 to 1. But not for long.... Dave Guillory hits a 2-2 pitch on the ground right to Ernesto Gonzelez at 1st and he fires the ball to C Masanori Ishii to get the force at home and Ishii fires it right back to get the double play! Duane McCann swings at the 1st pitch and flies out to left!! Still tied up after all!

Bottom of the 6th: Billy Griffin leads off by swatting an 0-2 pitch into the right field seats. 2 to 1, Giants.

Top of the 7th: Rich Babbin leads off with a hit and goes to 3rd on a single by Ernesto Gonzelez. But the next three record two strikeouts and a fly out to keep to put a big fat zero up on the scoreboard.

Bottom of the 8th: New Pitcher: LHP Alan Gross. His first relief appearance after 8 starts. The Giants have a pair of lefties around righty Stan Brown, so we are hoping Gross can get luck and get Brown out and deal with the lefties. He strikes out Billy Griffin, but the plan does not work as Stan Brown launches a home run to left on a 3-2 pitch. 3 to 1, Giants. Pat Crum, the other lefty strikes out. So, we made it 2/3 of the way to our objective....

Lost - 3 to 1

We had 5 hits and made no errors.
The Giants had 8 hits and made 1 error.

We turned 3 double plays.

Billy Rueter (L 0-1) went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks and struck out 3. He threw a WP. 4 walks in a row to start the 4th inning, but no other walks in the game.
LHP Pedro Huerta went 1 inning and allowed a hit.
LHP Alan Gross went 1 inning and allowed a run and a hit, a home run, and struck out 2.

John Chase (W 4-3) went 8 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he went 2 for 2.
RHP Alex Andrade (SV 14) went 1 perfect inning and struck out 1.

Nothing much worth reporting on offense. 3B Jim Eighmy was 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts.

For the Giants, LF Billy Griffin hit a double and his 4th home run of the season, drew a walk and scored 2 runs. C Stan Brown, an early MVP candidate, drew a walk and hit his 11th home run of the year.

Portland Beavers (18-26 .409 9.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
San Francisco Giants (27-18 .600 1 GB in 2nd place in the NL West)

Ron Rau, Por (29 R 4-4 3.71 9.7-0.7-2.3-5.3 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs John Phillips, SF (30 R 6-2 3.49 7.9-0.5-2.5-6.5)

Phillips is tied for 2nd in the NL in wins. We are 0-2 against him this year with only 2 earned runs in 14 innings. He pitched a 3-hit CG against us last time out.

Ron Rau has emerged as the clear ace of our staff, though he would have a hard time finding employment in San Francisco....

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Weather: 52 deg. Clear Skies with a 12 MPH wind blowing out center. They hit two home runs with the wind blowing in yesterday....

Jerry Alston slaps a single past the shortstop. Frank Wiginton grounds a hit to right and Alston goes to 3rd. Masanori Ishii strikes out. He has been very streaky this year and he is now on a cold streak. Rich Babbin up and Wiginton steals 2nd. Rich Babbin flies out to shallow left and Alston holds.... Ernesto Gonzelez walks on four pitches to load the bases up with 2 outs. Fred Pariseau sends one to deep center that if the wind can just get a hold of...but no, it is caught on the warning track....boogers.

Bottom of the 1st: John Anderson leads off with a scalding line drive to center for a hit. Herman Taylor grounds into a 5-4-3 double play! #10 on the season for him. Billy Griffin flies out to right.

Bottom of the 2nd: Stan Brown is walked to lead off the inning and with 1 out, Juan Abundis triples to right center. 1 to 0, Giants. Curt Brown grounds a hit to right. 2 to 0, Giants.

Top of the 3rd: The top of the order is up and they did well in the 1st inning, but this time P John Phillips strikes them all out, 1-2-3....

Bottom of the 5th: Curt Brown leads off with a hit, steals 2nd and then goes to 3rd on a fly ball. With 2 outs, John Anderson singles him home. 3 to 0, Giants.

Top of the 7th: Rich Babbin leads off with a double to left. Ernesto Gonzelez lines a hit up the middle and Babbin stops at 3rd. After Fred Pariseau strikes out, Rick Ferrell flies out to left and Babbin beats the throw to the plate. 3 to 1, Giants.

Top of the 8th: Frank Wiginton leads off with a home run to right! 3 to 2, Giants.

Bottom of the 8th: On the Hill: LHP Steve Mulder, beginning his 2nd inning of work. John Anderson leads off with a hit and with 2 out and him on 2nd and Stan Crown at the plate, we make a Call to the Bullpen: RHP Neville Carter. Brown lines a hit to left and Anderson scores. 4 to 2, Giants. Carter is crap....

Top of the 9th: New pitcher: RHP Alex Andrade, their closer. He already has 3 saves against us. Fred Pariseau leads off by taking one for the team. Rick Ferrell up and we have already used all of our ammunition from the bench. Only two players left their and neither is worth using as a pinch-hitter against a right-hander. Ferrell doubles to right center! Tying run in scoring position with no outs! Joe Hartin strikes out looking.... Rich Doody strikes out looking on three pitches.... Now the pitcher's slot is up and we have to use on of the no-good hitter. Pinch-Hitter: RHP Rickey Clayton. He grounds out to the pitcher.... Twice in this game we had runners at 3rd base with no outs (to begin it and now to end it) and neither time did we score a run.

Lost - 4 to 2

We had 9 hits and made no errors.
The Giants had 8 hits and made no errors.

Ron Rau (L 4-5) went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.
LHP Steve Mulder went 1.2 innings, allowed 1 run (thanks to Neville Carter), 1 hit and struck out 2.
RHP Neville Carter faced 1 batter and gave up a run-scoring hit.
LHP Pedro Huerta faced 1 batter and struck him out.

John Phillips (W 7-2) went 6.1 innings, gave us 1 run (he tried to give us more, but we refused to take them), 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7.
RHP Alex Andrade (SV 13) went 1 inning, gave us 1 hit, 1 HBP and struck out 2. He tried to give us runs, too, but we are not a greedy team; 2 is plenty for us.

LF Frank Wiginton had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the season and stole a base. CF Rich Babbin hit a double and scored a run. SS Rick Ferrell went 3 for 3 with 2 infield hits and a double and a SF. Maybe he is figuring out this major league pitching! PH Scott Setta had a hit.

For the Giants, CF John Anderson had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

We are in Cincinnati to play manager Bob Cole (49) and his Reds a 4-game series through the weekend. They just split a 2-game set with Atlanta, winning the first game, 17 to 8, and losing the 2nd game , 9 to 2. This is our first meeting with them. They are 4th in the National League in runs scored with 5.0 per game (Portland is back to #16 (last) with 3.6, thanks to the 17 runs the Reds gave the Braves in their last series). They are 2nd in the NL in home runs with 57 in 45 games. They are 13th in runs allowed with 4.8 per game (Portland is #12 with 4.7).

Portland Beavers (18-27 .400 10 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
Cincinnati Reds (20-25 .444 13 GB in 5th place in the NL East)

Pete Reilly, Por (27 R 2-0 3.44 9.3-2.0-4.4-4.4 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Sergio Armijo, Cin (35 R 1-0 3.97 9.9-0.8-2.0-5.6)

This will be Armijo's 3rd start of the season.

Reilly's numbers do not support his 3.44 ERA thus far, so he is probably in line for some correction there....

P.S. CF Lee Kowalski is on the top of my covet list and I am going to try and trade for him this winter for certain. He is solid, but not so good that I will have no shot at trading for him. He also would not play center for Portland, but is an excellent right fielder.

Bottom of the 1st: Lee Kowalski blisters one, but right to RF Jerry Alston. Mike Graham scalds one to right and Alston makes a great tumbling catch! Dave Broadwater strikes out! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the 2nd: Randy Casebolt leads off with a blast to right center and Jerry Alston makes his 2nd circus catch of the game!

Bottom of the 3rd: With 1 out, Jerry Alston runs down yet another ball destined for extra bases!

Top of the 4th: Frank Wiginton leads off with a single to right center and with 2 outs, Ernesto Gonzelez doubles to left and Wiginton scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Fred Pariseau grounds a hit up the middle and Gonzelez scores! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the 4h: A pair of singles by Wil Carballo and Larry Davidson puts runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs for the .168 hitting Dan Anderson. He bounces an easy grounder to 2nd and Fred Pariseau goes the shorter route to the 2nd base bag, but Rickey Clayton just plain muffs it and Carballo scores. E-6. 2 to 1, Beavers.

Bottom of the 6th: Randy Casebolt leads off with a single and steals 2nd, but he need not have, for Wil Carballo blasts one 430 ft. to straight away center. 3 to 2, Reds.

Bottom of the 7th: New Pitcher: RHP Edmondo Buenaventura. With 2 outs, Mike Graham goes deep. 4 to 2, Reds.

Top of the 9th: New pitcher: RHP Don Butts. Not their closer. 6.52 ERA. With 1 out, Ernesto Gonzelez and Fred Pariseau hit back-to-back singles to put runners at 1st and 3rd. Rickey Clayton pops out to 2nd. Jim Eighmy strikes out....

Lost - 4 to 2

We had 9 hits and made 2 errors.

RHP Ron Beckman went 1 inning, allowed 1 hit and 2 walks.

Sergio Armijo (W 2-0) went 8 innings, gave us 2 runs, 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2.
Don Butts (SV 2) went 1 inning, gave us 2 hits and struck out 1.

RF Jerry Alston had 2 hits and 3 amazing catches. Frank Wiginton had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. 1B Ernesto Gonzelez had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Fred Pariseau had 2 hits and an RBI.

Jerry Alston leads us off once again by getting on base, this time with a hustle double to left center. Scott Setta flies out to center. Rich Babbin grounds out to 2nd and Alston goes to 3rd. Ernesto Gonzelez work the count full and tries to check his swing on the payoff pitch. The umpire says, "Yes, you checked your swing, but the pitch was a strike and you are out!"

Bottom of the 1st: Lee Kowalski hits one on the nose, but 2B Fred Pariseau leaps up and snags it! Full count to Mike Graham and he takes ball four. Bottom of the 6th: Lee Kowalski leads off with a hit and with 1 out Dave Broadwater hit a home run to left center. 3 to 0, Reds.

Top of the 8th: PH Frank Wiginton and Jerry Alston lead off with back-to-back singles to give us runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs, a situation we have not been able to score from in a recent memory. Scott Setta grounds a hit to right and Wiginton scores and Alston goes to 3rd! 3 to 1, Reds. New pitcher: RHP Tony Ahern. 6.75 ERA, 30 H in 20 IP. Rich Babbin lines out to right and Alston scampers home. 3 to 2, Reds.

Top of the 9th: New pitcher: RHP Don Butts, who IS their closer now. 9.00 ERA, but he saved one yesterday against us. Rick Ferrell strikes out. Jim Eighmy, cold as can be, grounds out to 3rd. 2 outs. Pinch-Hitter: LHB Rich Doody. He swings a the first pitch and flies out to left....

8: 1B Dan Anderson (33 L .167-4-10-.628 in 90 AB)
9: P Dick LeFeber (28 L .125-0-0-.250 in 16 AB)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Weather: 63 deg. Clear Skies with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from center.

Jerry Alston strikes out looking. Well, he could not keep getting on base to lead off games forever. Scott Setta flies out to right. Frank Wiginton gives one a ride to left that maybe, could be....caught on the warning track.

Bottom of the 1st: Lee Kowalski pops out to the catcher. Mike Graham grounds a hit past the shortstop. He steals 2nd. He tries to steal 2rd, but that is a little too greedy and C Masanori Ishii throws him out! Good, now Dave Broadwater's upcoming home run will only be a solo shot. Broadwater flies out to shallow center!

Top of the 2nd: After Ernesto Gonzelez strikes out, Masanori Ishii, with the adrenaline still flowing from throwing the base runner out, blasts one 410 ft. to left center! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the 4th: Well, I was right about Broadwater having an upcoming home run.... with 1 out, he hits one to right. Tied up at 1.

Top of the 6th: P Alan Gross leads off with a double to right center. Jerry Alston lines a hit to left and Gross stops at 3rd. Here is that very tough scoring situation a gain: 1st and 3rd with no outs.... Scott Setta swings at a 2-2 pitch and makes solid contact and it is sent deep to left where this on could maybe....GONE! That EXTREMELY rare breed of homer bird: the 3-run variety!! 4 to 1, Beavers! That sends P Dick LeFeber to the showers.

Top of the 7th: On the hill: LHP Mike Williams, beginning his 2nd inning of work. Fred Pariseau leads off with a shot to center that easily clears the fence! 5 to 1, Beavers!

Won - 5 to 1

We hit 3 home runs, a new Beaver record!

We had 8 hits and made 1 error.
The Reds had 4 hits and made no errors.

Alan Gross (W 2-2) went 9 innings (CG), allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run.

Dick LeFeber (L 5-5) went 5+ innings, gave us 4 runs, 5 hits, 2 home runs, no walks and struck out 4.

CF Scott Setta hit his 2nd home run of the season and had 3 RBIs.

For the Reds, LF Dave Broadwater hit his 9th home run of the season and had 2 RBIs. 1B Dan Anderson hit his 4th home run of the year. C Masanori Ishii hit his 5th home run of the year and threw out 2 of 3 base stealers. 2B Fred Pariseau hit his 4th home run.

P.S. I added the 7th reliever to the bullpen and our starters have thrown 6 straight quality starts! Now that reliever is superfluous, but I know as soon as I trim him, we will go back to 4 innings a pop.... So, he'll stay for a bit.

7: 2B Howard Robertson (29 R .242-0-3-.692 in 33 AB)
8: 1B Dan Anderson (33 L .163-4-10-.622 in 92 AB)
9: P George Vaughn (30 R .174-0-0-.391 in 23 AB)

Game Start: 2:05 PM
Weather: 62 deg. Partly Cloudy with a 10 MPH wind blowing in from left.

Frank Wiginton flies out to left. Rick Ferrell grounds out to 2nd. Rich Babbin walks on four pitches. Ernesto Gonzelez up. 3-1 count. Balk! And then Ball four, so all the arguing by Cincy's manager over the balk is moot. Masanori Ishii grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the 1st: Lee Kowalski flies out to right. Mike Graham grounds out to 2nd. Dave Broadwater lines a 1-2 pitch down the left field line for a double. Randy Casebolt grounds a hit to right and Broadwater scores. 1 to 0, Reds. Wil Carballo flies out to right.

Top of the 4th: Ernesto Gonzelez leads off with a walk and Masanori Ishii singles him to 3rd. Rich Doody flies out to center and Gonzelez tags up and heads home. Safe! Tie game: 1 to 1.

Top of the 6th: Ernesto Gonzelez leads off with a hit and with 2 outs, Fred Pariseau doubles him home! 2 to 1, Beavers! They issue an intentional walk to Jim Eighmy to get to the pitcher. Eighmy is 0 for his last 20... Billy Rueter grounds a hit up the middle and Pariseau scores!!! 3 to 1, Beavers! Love it! That sends P George Vaughn packing.

Bottom of the 6th: Randy Casebolt leads off and hit a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right center. 3 to 2, Beavers. Editor's Note: I wish I had a nickel for every 2-strike home run in OOTP!

Bottom of the 9th: Still 3 to 2, Beavers. On the Hill: RHP Ron Beckman, beginning his 2nd inning of work. Howard Robertson lines a hit to center. Dan Anderson flies out to center. SS Larry Davidson walks on four pitches. Call to the Bullpen: LHP Pedro Huerta. Lee Kowalski walks on four pitches. Pinch-hitter: RHB Casey Hensley. 0 for 7 on the season. Call to the Bullpen: RHP Greg Richey. The fella that gives up a hit to the first batter he faces every time.... But who else? Beckman and Huerta are the only two relievers I had any trust in at all and they let me down today.... LHP Steve Mulder has been good against lefties, but cannot get righties out to save his life. Full count. Hensley hits a fly ball to left and Robertson scores without a throw. Tie game at 3. 2 outs. Dave Broadwater up. I know.... He strikes out looking!!!

Extras!

And we have already used our whole bench except for our backup catcher who has not played in a major league game yet this year!

Top of the 10th: On the hill: Dave Butts, their sorry closer, who has mowed us down with ease this series, starting his 2nd inning of work. He gets the first two out and we let P Greg Richey hit and he singles! Frank Wiginton doubles! But then Rick Ferrell grounds out.

Bottom of the 10th: Randy Casebolt leads off with a double. With 2 outs, Howard Robertson singles to left..... ballgame.

Random Fact of the Week: Okay! We stink on offense and we are atrocious pitching and our fielding, other than throwing out base stealers, is below average! I can work with this!

IF Rickey Clayton has made a 'play me or trade me' demand. He's hitting .200 with no power and fielding horribly. Nobody wants him; I already shopped him around. P's Tony Ricketts and Ron Beckman are the only players we have that anyone else is interested in trading for. I told him that if he wants to be a starter, I can send him to Indianapolis (AAA), but maybe Jacksonville (AA) would be better suited to his talent level. I cannot guarantee he will start games in Indianapolis....

We are back in Oregon and manager Jim Perkins (64) has his Phillies here to play us a 4-game series. They lost 3 of 4 in Phoenix over the weekend, though they outscored the Diamondbacks for the series. All three losses were by 1 run. This is the first time we have played them. They are 9th in the National League in scoring with 4.2 runs per game (Portland is #16 with 3.5). Their batters lead the NL in strikeouts. They are 8th in runs allowed with 4.2 per game (Portland is #12 with 4.6). Their pitchers are 2nd in strikeouts and 2nd to last in home runs allowed and walks.

Weather: 62 deg. (I am sweating!) Clear Skies with a 7 MPH wind blowing right to left.

Vic Fernandez grounds out to short. Mike Chapin strikes out on three pitches. Tom Scott grounds a single past the third baseman. Scoot tries to steal and we have a pitch-out called, but he makes it anyway. Rick Lewis knocks one to left for a hit and Scott heads home from 2nd, but Frank Wiginton throws him out!

Bottom of the 1st: Jerry Alston takes a 3-2 pitch for ball four. Frank Wiginton grounds out to 2nd and Alston moves up a base. Rich Babbin up and Alston heads for 2rd on the first pitch and he is safe! Babbin flies out to shallow left and Alston has to hold. 2 outs. Fred Pariseau is plunked. Masanori Ishii strikes out. Bottom of the 8th: Still a scoreless game. New pitcher: RHP Miguel Avila. Fred Pariseau leads off with a home run to left center! 1 to 0, Beavers.

Top of the 9th: P Alan Gross still on the Hill, but he is starting labor. 113 pitches. The Bullpen is ready to go. Tom Scott, with 1 home run all season, swings at the first pitch and puts in the left field seats.... Tie game at 1. Call to the Bullpen: LHP Pedro Huerta. Rick Lewis bounces a hit to right. Ignacio Medina doubles to left center and Lewis scores. 2 to 1, Phillies.

Bottom of the 9th: New pitcher: LHP Kip Chesley, their closer. Pinch-Hitter: RHB Scott Setta. He flies out to left. Pinch-Hitter: RHB Rickey Clayton. He pops out to 2nd on the first pitch. Full count to Frank Wiginton and he takes ball four. Pinch-Hitter: RHB Ron Charles. He grounds a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a hit. Tying run is in scoring position with 2 outs for our cleanup hitter, such as he is.... 3-2 pitch and Fred Pariseau takes a mighty cut and misses it by a mile.... ballgame.

Lost - 2 to 1

We had 8 hits and made no errors.
The Phillies had 9 hits and made no errors.

Alan Gross went 8+ innings, allowed 1 run, 7 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits.

Manager Clyde Black (63) has his Padres here to play a 3-game series over the weekend. They just split a 4-game series with the Pirates in Pittsburgh. We lost 3 of 4 against them in San Diego the first time we met and scored 9 total runs in the 4 games. They are 14th in runs scored in the NL with 3.8 per game (Portland is #16 (last) with 3.5). They are 1st in fewest runs allowed with 3.5 (Portland is #13 with 4.6). Their pitchers have the lowest batting average allowed in the NL at .238. Portland is at .277. The league average is .258.

San Diego Padres (28-25 .528 3 GB in 5th place in the NL West) at
Portland Beavers (20-33 .377 11 GB in 7th place in the NL West)

Lenny Barker, SD (34 L 3-4 4.68 9.5-0.8-3.6-8.1 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Steve Mulder, Por (28 L 0-1 4.70 1 SV 11.7-0.6-4.7-6.5)

Barker is 2nd in the NL in SO/9. We have not faced him before.

I am not so keen on giving Steve Mulder another start, but after sending Billy Rueter back to Indianapolis, Mulder is the only fresh starter available. The plan is for Edmondo Buenaventura to move back into the rotation.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age Bats BA-HR-RBI-OPS)
SAN DIEGO
1: RF Joe Greenslit (27 R .262-3-22-.646 in 191 AB)
2: SS Floyd Miller (26 R .276-7-19-.799 in 203 AB)
3: 1B Jesus Quintana (25 L .289-4-23-.799 in 211 AB)
4: 2B Bob Sargent (28 R .231-9-32-.747 in 195 AB)
5: LF Gene Collins (26 R .275-3-17-.762 in 171 AB)
6: 3B Dave Watts (32 R .222-3-19-.665 in 162 AB)
7: C Mark Parker (27 R .179-1-7-.596 in 56 AB)
8: CF Ron Shively (24 R .264-2-10-.670 in 159 AB)
9: P Lenny Barker (34 L .174-0-3-.391 in 23 AB)

PORTLAND
1: 2B Rickey Clayton (31 R .200-0-3-.524 in 65 AB)
2: 1B Ray Wilson (37 R .267-0-2-.673 in 45 AB)
3: CF Scott Setta (34 R .289-2-10-.755 in 83 AB)
4: C Masanori Ishii (32 R .254-5-19-.691 in 177 AB)
5: 3B Tim DePriest (26 R .000-0-0-.000 in 4 AB)
6: LF Frank Wiginton (30 S .295-3-18-.849 in 146 AB)
7: SS Rick Ferrell (25 R .214-0-2-.465 in 56 AB)
8: RF Jerry Alston (28 L .323-0-1-.804 in 31 AB)
9: P Steve Mulder (28 L 1.000-0-0-2.000 in 1 AB)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Weather: 54 deg. Partly Cloudy with a 7 MPH wind blowing right to left.

Joe Greenslit beats out an infield hit. Floyd Miller drills one, but CF Scott Setta manages to run it down near the wall in right center. Jesus Quintana up and Greenslit lights out for 2nd, but is thrown out by C Masanori Ishii! Mulder is pretty tough to run on. Quintana lines a hit to center. Bob Sargent walks on four pitches. Gene Collins bloops one to right and Jerry Alston makes an unbelievable catch to saves runs!

Bottom of the 1st: Man, our lineup against lefties is just pitiful.... Rickey Clayton flies out to center. Ray Wilson walks from a full count. Scott Setta flies out to the warning track in center. Masanori Ishii grounds out to short.

Top of the 3rd: Joe Greenslit leads off with another infield single and then Floyd Miller hits a home run to left. 2 to 0, Padres. Jesus Quintana walks and then Bob Sargent beats out an infield hit. The Bullpen is activated. Gene Collins singles to center to load the bases up with no outs. Dave Watts doubles down the left field line to scores a pair. 4 to 0, Padres and 6 straight to reach base is enough.... Call to the Bullpen: RHP Freddy Arana. He's gonna have to eat some innings.... Mark Parker walks to load the bases back up and still no outs. Ron Shively flies out to center and Collins scores. 5 to 0, Padres.

Bottom of the 4th: With 1 out, Scott Setta gets our first hit and with 2 outs, Tim DePriest gets his first Major League hit. Setta heads to 2rd and the throw is bad and he scores. 1B + E-8. 5 to 1, Padres.

Bottom of the 7th: Masanori Ishii leads off with a walk and goes to 3rd on a hit by Tim DePriest. Frank Wiginton grounds a hit up the middle and Ishii scores and DePriest goes to 3rd. 5 to 2, Padres. Rick Ferrell beats out an infield hit, but DePriest held at 3rd, so the bases are loaded with nobody out. New pitcher: RHP Jack Helgerson. Jerry Alston taps one back to the pitcher and they get the force out at the plate. Pinch-Hitter: LHB Rich Babbin. He flies out to right and the runners hold. Pinch-Hitter: LHB Ernesto Gonzelez. Rickey Clayton, the man pinch-hit for comes back to the dugout and slams his helmet on the ground and then kicks it an nearly takes out Pitching Coach Gary Marquardt. I sure would like to trade him, but if no one will take him, what can you do? We cannot really afford to just cut him. Maybe when SS Randy Penn gets off the DL, I can figure out something. Meanwhile, Gonzelez grounds out to 1st to give us no runs after loading the bases up with no outs.....

Bottom of the 9th: With 2 outs and nobody on, PH Ron Charles hits a home run to left. 5 to 3, Padres.

Lost - 5 to 3

We had 9 hits and made 1 error.
The Padres had 9 hits and made 1 error.

Steve Mulder (L 0-2) went 2+ innings, allowed 5 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he never made it to the plate.... Yeah, he won't start again....or ever face a right-hander in a crucial situation.
RHP Freddy Arana went 3 hitless innings, but walked 3 and struck out no one. What to make of that?
RHP Neville Carter went 2 innings, allowed 1 hit, 2 walks and struck out 1.
RHP Ron Beckman went 2 innings and allowed 2 walks. He threw a WP. So our bullpen went 7 innings, allowed only 1 hit, but walked 7 and struck out only 1.... That is an odd line....

Lenny Barker (W 4-4) went 6 innings, gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4.
LHP Charlie Baird (SV 4) went 1 inning and have us a run on a home run and struck out 1.

C Masanori Ishii hit a double, drew a walk and scored a run and was 2 for 2 in throwing out Joe Greenslit. 3B/2B Tim DePriest had 2 hits. SS Rick Ferrell had 2 hits. PH Ron Charles hit a home run.

For the Padres, RF Joe Greenslit had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. SS Floyd Miller hit his 8th home run of the season, walked twice and had 2 RBIs. 3B Dave Watts hit a double, walked 3 times and had 2 RBIs.

Down on the Farm: P Danny Roberson (26 L) of Stockton (A+) was named the California League Pitcher of the Month: 5-0 2.79 38.2 IP 32 H 1 HR 12 BB 21 SO. He is no prospect and had a 6.19 ERA in April. But Stockton, when Roberson did not win the game, was 5-19 in May.

Top of the 2nd: With 1 out, Chris Bender singles up the middle. Ron Shively triples. 1 to 0, Padres. Can we strike out the pitcher and keep the runner at 3rd? 2-2 pitch to P Phil McPhie and he flies out to right and Shively scores. 2 to 0, Padres.

Bottom of the 7th: Fred Pariseau leads off with a walk and Rick Ferrell singles. With 1 out, PH Scott Setta singles to load the bases up. San Diego Padres (30-25 .545 3 GB in 5th place in the NL West) at
Portland Beavers (20-35 .364 13 GB in 7th place in the NL West)

Bob Kinney, SD (30 R 1-4 2.15 6.9-0.7-2.9-7.4 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Pete Reilly, Por (27 R 2-1 3.38 8.9-1.5-4.6-4.9)

The Battle of the Luckless and Lucky Pitchers! To say Kinney has been unlucky is an understatement. He is 4th in the NL in ERA. He has twice pitched at least 7 innings without allowing a run and not gotten a win. He could not even beat us, though in 7 innings, he only gave us 1 run on 7 hits and 2 walks and struck out 4. We won the game on April 21 in San Diego, 3 to 1, in 11 innings. Reilly's numbers do not support his 3.38 ERA, not even close....

8: 3B Tim DePriest (26 R .222-0-0-.444 in 9 AB)
9: P Pete Reilly (27 R .300-0-0-.600 in 10 AB)

Game Start: 2:05 PM
Weather: 64 deg. Clear Skies with a 7 MPH wind blowing in from center.

Joe Greenslit grounds a hit up the middle. Jose Hernandez flies out to right. Greenslit steals 2nd, but Jesus Quintana walks anyway on a 3-2 pitch. Floyd Miller grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!

Bottom of the 1st: Jerry Alston strikes out looking on three pitches. Frank Wiginton strikes out swinging. Rich Babbin swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to right! 1 to 0, Beavers! Ernesto Gonzelez flies out to center. He is close to punching his ticket back to Indianapolis. None of the first basemen there are clamoring to get back to Portland, however.

Bottom of the 4th: Rich Babbin and Ernesto Gonzelez lead off with back-to-back walks. Fred Pariseau lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded with nobody out. Ron Charles doubles to right and 2 runs score! 3 to 0, Beavers! We might have to give Charles a chance to win the #1 catching job. They walk Rickey Clayton intentionally to load the bases back up and still no outs.Tom DePriest chops a slow one to short and he is thrown out, but the runners all move up and Pariseau scores. 4 to 0, Beavers. They do NOT walk P Pete Reilly, a better hitter than Clayton, whom they DID walk in the same situation, and he bounces a hit up the middle and 2 more runs score! 6 to 0, Beavers! P Bob Kinney takes a powder. New pitcher: LHP Juan Escudero. Jerry Alston doubles down the right field line! Frank Wiginton beats out an infield hit and P Reilly scores! 7 to 0, Beavers! Rich Babbin doubles of the right center field wall and both runners score! 9 to 0, Beavers! The last three hitters to all reach are horrible at hitting lefties and so is Ernesto Gonzelez, whom I have just jinxed. Yep, he pops out to 3rd. 2 outs. Fred Pariseau flies out to right to end the 8-run inning! Can we hold it for 5 innings?

Top of the 9th: Still 9 to 0, Beavers and P Pete Reilly still on the hill with 110 pitches thrown, but he looks fine. Jesus Quintana grounds out to 3rd on an 8-pitch at bat and Reilly is starting to look a little tired. The Bullpen is warming up. Floyd Miller grounds out to the pitcher on an 0-2 pitch. 2 outs. Bob Sargent hits an 0-2 pitch into the left field seats. 9 to 1, Beavers.

Won - 9 to 1

Random Fact of the Week: 1B Marv Helton of Pittsburgh is hitting .457 through the first third of the season. Assuming the same ratio of AB to PA as he has had already, he will need to hit .352 the rest of the way to make it to 502 PA with a .400 batting average. By the way, he is no dink and dunk hitter; he is on a pace to have over 100 extra base hits (and this is no steroid-driven league)! I expect him to get injured and miss the rest of the season any day now....
