Sent to AAA: Mark Huismann
Called up: Alfredo Martinez Martinez goes in the rotation, putting Dave Stewart back into the bullpen, where the team wanted him before the Beattie injury.

Growing pains for Stew Cliburn as he blew the save in the 9th after allowing four straight batters to reach base without recording an out. The Rangers beat the Jays 4-3. Larry Parrish hit his 4th home run. WP - Jeff Lahti (1-0) LP - Stew Cliburn (0-1) Record - 12-5

Paul Molitor went 4 for 4 with a home run, double, 2 singles, a walk and 3 RBI as the Jays beat the Rangers 10-3. Michael Hunter and John Godwin also hit homers. Bert Blyleven left the game after 2 inning with a tired arm. He may miss his next start, or it may just be pushed back. WP - Dave Stewart (2-0) LP - Bill Bonham (0-2) Record - 13-5

Dave Stieb's first start in his return to the big club was a success as the Blue Jay hitters scored 11 times despite getting no home runs. John Godwin reached base four times without getting an extra-base hit and crossed the plate three of those times. Toronto beat Oakland 11-4. WP - Dave Stieb (1-0) LP - Mike Scott (1-4) Record - 14-5

Michael Klinger is the nominal closer but today he got a spot start as the Jays adapt to Bert Blyleven's nagging injury. It didn't work out as they fell to the A's 5-1. Larry Parrish hit a solo shot for the only Toronto run. WP - Steve Carlton (1-1) Save - Jimmy Key (1) LP - Michael Klinger (2-1) Record - 14-6

TRADE
To WHITE SOX Dave Stewart Mark Huismann Jim Wilson Adam Thompson To BLUE JAYS Matt Valentine Jorge Galvez Marshall Lawson Gus McCoy Hunter Myers We get some serious prospects in exchange for a couple of relievers. Solid deal! (Though we do need to get our bullpen sorted out. We have lots of potential there.) Kuniaki Sakamoto was called up from AAA. Michael Klinger is sent down. Valentine joins the Jays. Also sent down: Domingo Bruno Called up: Mark Salas Our latest attempt at a closer is Don Carman. (The team is doing great but every time a pitcher becomes the closer the immediately spirals. They can't take the pressure!)

The Jays and the Mariners went into the top of the 9th tied 1-1. Toronto scored 9 runs in the inning to win 10-1. Alfredo Martinez, despite being told he is being shifted to the bullpen, made his first start of the season while Bert Blyleven is still ailing. He had a great outing. It isn't changing the Jays' management's mind just now, but you never know. WP - Pepe Romero (1-0) LP - Bert Roberge (3-3) Record - 16-7

Dave Stieb had a terrible start and was chased in the 2nd inning. The Toronto hitters came back, though, even taking the lead on a Larry Parrish Grand Slam in the 7th. It was tied 10-10 after 9 innings. Then the top of the 10th came. The Seattle bullpen was exhausted and eventually they went to Willie Lazado, back-up third baseman, to pitch. The Blue Jays scored 15 times in the top of the 10th and won the game 25-10. John Godwin and Miguel Pena also hit home runs. Larry Parrish collected 7 RBI. Miguel Pena had 5. WP - Jesse Conley (1-0) LP - Bert Roberge (3-4) Record - 17-7

Bert Blyleven struggled a little bit early in his first game back from a minor injury, but he hung in there and settled down, allowing his bats a chance to get back in it and grab the 7-5 win over the Mariners. WP - Bert Blyleven (3-1) Save - Tom Niedenfuer (4) LP - Tom Underwood (1-3) Record - 18-7
