You could turn off UAC but probably not the best idea. Just running OOTP as Admin fixes the issue. Last edited by byzeil; 03-27-2015 at 11:36 AM. |

Are you not worried that a bad guy writing a script could get into your computer and makes changes to your machine without your knowledge? If not, why not? Do you have some other protection beyond the UAC setting that prevents that?

OK, so here's a question: Having spent the last, like, two hours working on this problem like a freaking madman trying only to see whether I could change those silly little icons, what are some of the other things I can do with the new skin files that can spiffy up my experience? Is it as simple as going in and changing images under the images and style_sets folders to my liking?
EDIT: Also, what are those .ss files? Anything I could customize?

One other question: does anyone know where the .png files are that are used in browser output pages when you want to open something in external browser? Because the current cross-hatched gray background behind the titles is not cutting it for me, and I would like to change that to something like they had in 14, which was a nice green baseball field-type thing:

This is what these forums are good for: Exchange of information and ideas. I cannot imagine this game without these forums.

I'm not too handy with photoshopping so all I did was visit a clip-art website (Free Clip Art & Images - Millions of Royalty Free Images | Clker), searched for "heart", found a good one and saw that they conveniently offer downloading in PNG format (with the background already transparent, thank goodness). One thing I had to do was reduce the size to fit; one side (width?) has to be 40 pixels, I believe. I used FastStone Image Viewer for that (heh, someday I will learn GIMP but not today!). So, combining Peregrine's Cy Young icon and my MPP icon, you can see why my man Stuart Williams held the MPP award for six straight years. Great stuff!

Your custom images in the skin file will be overwritten with updates. Among other files, I copy the entire Skin folder I'm using (it has all the images in its own folder inside that) and keep that copy in a folder I call Protection. After any update, I simply copy and paste that folder back into the original location, rename the skin.bin file oldskin.bin and let the game rebuild the images. If your custom images are in there, they'll be restored. If you didn't save them somewhere, you'll have to replace them, then follow the rebuild process, then they'll appear again.

Ironically, chucksabr, after a Windows update or two, I now have the same problem that you did (see earlier posts in this thread). Unless I run OOTP 16 in administrator mode, the game will not construct a new skin.bin file or even read a revised one. This is true despite the fact that I am the administrator on my laptop.
The answer, as byzeil said, is to run the game in administrator mode. This can be done conveniently by right-clicking the game start icon, choosing Properties, clicking Compatibility tab, and checking the box to "Run this program as an administrator." This is the first time that I ever had to do this with any OOTPB version. Chuck, I'm sorry that I could not help you at the time. My suggestions were way off base. Thank goodness for byzeil's input.

The icons don't show unless I run the game as admin., which I don't want to do all the time. This wasn't an issue last version.
So is everyone else seeing the skin changes when running the game without admin. privileges? Besides the icons, my custom start screen backgrounds also won't show. |
