1902 World Series

WS game 1:

Jack Chesbro is known for his pitching prowess and his way he can throw a pitch. But hitting a HR? Chesbro gave up 3 runs on 8 hits but was still a good performance as the Pirates beat the Americans 8-3 to take 1-0 lead in the world series. Chesbro however smacked a ball over the right field fence so he also provided some offensive help too. Tommy Leach went 4 for 4 in the game including a homer and Zimmer went 3 for 4 including a double and scored two runs. But the player of the game had to be Chesbro.
Jack Chesbro: "Young threw me a curveball that it looked like was just sitting there waiting for me to hit it. No one was more surprised than me that i hit it over the wall!

WS game 2:

Game 2 of the world series went a little differently this time. Buck J Freeman smacked a key 2-run HR in the 3rd inning as Boston clipped Pittsburgh 5-3 to tie the series at 1 game each. Bill Dinneen gave up 2 runs on 7 hits to quiet the Pirates bats in this one. Sam Leever took the loss as he looked like he was having trouble with his curveball.
Buck J Freeman: "A good win for us. We took one here, now we have a chance to take two at home and see if we can get closer to hoisting that trophy!"

WS game 3:

The Pirates felt good with Deacon Phillippe taking the field for game 3 of the world series. But they didnt feel good after it. Phillippe pitched his worst game of the 1902 postseason as he gave up 6 earned runs. Candy LaChance of the Americans went 3 for 4 with a double and a RBI as the Americans won a crucial game 3 6-3 over Pittsburgh to take the lead in the series 2-1.
Candy LaChance:"Our crowd was loud and we went out there and beat the best pitcher in this year's playoffs. Thats going to give us some great confidence in the next few games!:

WS game 4:

Cy Young got some revenge for game 1 of the series as he went out there in game 4 and pitched the Americans to a 4-3 win over the Pirates. The Americans have a 3-1 series lead going back to Pittsburgh. Jack Chesbro pitched well also, but it wasn't enough as Cy Young pitched better.
Cy Young: "The fastballs I threw seemed to have movement and i think it kinda messed up their timing a little bit. But there is still one more win that we need!"

WS game 5:

They lost game 1 of the series, and then swept the Pirates 4 straight! The Boston Americans are the 1902 World Series Champions after finishing off Pittsburgh at Exposition Park with a 4-2 win to clinch the series 4-1. Bill Dinneen and Sam Leever went head to head in this game, but timely htting by Chick Stahl, had two big RBI in the 6th inning to put the Americans ahead for good. A very disappointed crowd left the ballpark, hoping to see the Pirates hold off elimination, but it was not to be this year.
Bill Dinneen: "This team played well all year long and we knew Pittsburgh was going to be a real challenge, but the right team came out on top and i am so happy right now, words really cant say how im feeling!"
Cy Young:" YES!!! Thats the word im going to use...YES!!!"

1902 World Series Wrapup

1902 World Series Wrapup

So now, to wrap things up for 1902, Bill Dinneen is my choice for WORLD SERIES MVP!! He pitched two gorgeous games and the Pirates really couldnt hit him. The Boston Americans proved that sometimes, when you put in the hard work to win, you DO come out on top.

Everyone here are your World Series Champions!!!

THE 1902 BOSTON AMERICANS!!!

I'm sad to see that Jack Chesbro and the Pirates lost the World Series, but I'm also excited for 1903 since my team will come in to existence.

you do know that your team is already in existence...before they were the New York Highlanders...they were the original Baltimore Orioles

True, although they didn't do so hot this year, and it just feels right for them to at least be based in New York.

1903 PreSeason

1903 Preseason:

Some changes were made in 1903 as most of you probably already know. The Cleveland Broncos name really didnt go well with the management so they decided to become the Cleveland Naps. The Baltimore Orioles decided to move up the east coast and become the New York Highlanders, which we all know who they will become one day. In the NL, the Chicago Orphans are no longer in a foster home. They have been adopted and are now the Chicago Cubs.

OOTP Predicts that the Naps, Athletics and Americans will be at the top of the AL and the Pirates, Giants and Reds will own the NL. Have to admit though, OOTP has been right and wrong on a few occasions. Honus Wagner and Rube Waddell are predicted to be the best in baseball.

Honus Wagner: "Another season and another chance to be the best. We are still feeling that loss in the series. We are going to get that one back!"

Rube Waddell: "Just have to go out there and pitch. Its nice to be thought of as one of the best players in baseball, but it doesn't mean anything if we cant get to the playoffs this year."

1903-April

Twib:

In the short month of April, its the Detroit Tigers who shoot out of the gate undefeated in the AL led by early season hitting from Sam Crawford. Nothing wrong starting the season on a 6 game winning streak. Their schedule was pretty light in April, but it gets heavier later. The Americans and Athletics are only 2 games back.

In the NL, as usual, its the Pirates leading the way followed by Brooklyn and the Giants. A tough start for the Phillies though, as they are on a 9 game losing streak.

Fred Clarke: "We want another shot at the playoffs. We know that you have to start fast in this league. Too many good teams you have to play all year."

Earl Moore: "Long season, guys. Just because you start at the bottom, doesn't mean you can't reach the top!"

May 1903

05/03:

Two teams made their moves in May as the Cleveland Naps, with 18-9 month stormed into 3rd place in the AL, while the Philadelphia Athletics, moved into 1st place with a 16-9 record for the month. Nap Lajoie seems to like things in Cleveland instead of Philadelphia. He was a free agent in 1902, then got picked up by the Naps in June of that year after being released by Philadelphia earlier in the 1902 season, according to the historical transactions. Please note: This first run through uses the historical transactions, lineups, and stats. No changes in this dynasty. The goal of this dynasty is to see if the players would still perform like they actually did under the same conditions, except during the playoffs, where they have been expanded.

In the NL, its still all about the Pittsburgh Pirates. Opening up a 5 game lead on the Chicago Cubs, who moved into 2nd place during the month, with the New York Giants right behind them in 3rd. The Cubs are in the middle of a 5 game winning streak as well.

I had an opportunity to talk to Frank Chance of the Cubs and i asked him the same question everyone else asks him. "Where are you going in such a hurry?"
Frank Chance: " I know..i am pretty fast! Running always seemed to come natural to me. I kept my legs in shape during my younger days. I never knew they would be good for running the basepaths."

With an ERA under 1, John Deering of the Tigers has made some improvement in the early part of the year.
John Deering: "My pitch movement has gotten a lot better, i think. Earlier in the year, I dont think the ball was doing what i really wanted it to do, but i talked to my pitching coach, Chris Young, and he showed a better way to grip my fastball. Its working...i guess."

Halfway thru the 1903 season, we see that the Philadelphia Athletics have taken over the top spot in the AL. They increased their lead from .5 to 6.5 in one month. The Detroit Tigers who got out of the gate fast, fall all the way to 5th, but they are only 3.5 away from the Boston Americans, who are not having the year the world champions expected. The Cleveland Naps are in good control of 2nd in the AL.
In the NL, who else but the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now in the middle of an 8 game winning streak, they show no signs of slowing down. The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds are right behind them, with the New York Giants and Brooklyn Superbas, still close to that important 3rd spot in the NL, only 2.5 games behind the Reds.

Nap Lajoie, who is now a member of the Naps, is leading the AL in batting with his new team.
Nap Lajoie: "Funny! I was part of the Athletics last year before going to Cleveland. Now, here i am in Cleveland, chasing my old team. Weird!"

13-1 with a 2.33 ERA is nothing to sneeze at for Ed Doheny of the Pirates. His teamates are very proud of him.
Ed Doheny: "Fred came up to me today and asked me, could you please tone down that curveball? One day you are going to make that pitch in Pittsburgh and its going to wind up in Philadelphia. I asked how and Clarke said, because the curve on that pitch is so good, that ball is going to it's OWN way"

Here come the Naps! After a star-studded July, the Cleveland Naps have moved to within 2.5 games of the Philadelphia Athletics in the AL. Nap Lajoie continues to shine as he hits with a slugging percentage of .570! The Boston Americans hold the 3rd spot but do not have a great hold on it because the New York Highlanders are only 3.5 behind, and the Detroit Tigers are .5 behind them.

Things are a little simpler over in the NL as the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to dominate. The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds are right behind them, but dont count out the New York Giants, who are only .5 behind the Reds. At one point during the month, the St. Louis Cardinals, held the 3rd spot, so i don't think that we have seen the last of them.

Harry H Davis of the Philadelphia Athletics has been very pleased with how the season is going. He's batting .360 this year.
Harry H Davis: "Im just trying to do what i can to help my team. Boston isnt having the season they expected, and we're playing well...so maybe it's our turn for the playoffs."

Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants has his pitches humming. With a 1.67 ERA, he leads the NL in pitching. But he wants something more.
Christy Mathewson: "I want a shot at the playoffs. Two years now, and we still havent got there. So im going to continue to practice my pitching and do what I have to do to get this team into the big show."

As we get closer to crunch time, we see that the Cleveland Naps have taken over the top spot in the AL holding a 3 game lead over the Philadelphia Athletics.
The defending world champs are having a tough time this year, as they hold the 3rd spot with the Detroit Tigers only 1.5 behind.
With one month left of baseball, who knows what could happen?

Same old story in the NL.
Yep, im talking about the Pittsburgh Pirates as usual.
They own it and they are not giving it back.
It looks like the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds are going to play in the NLDS, but the New York Giants are only 3 GB of the 3rd playoff spot.
So dont count them out yet.

Lave Cross of the PHA is 2nd in the AL with 79 RBIs.
Lave Cross: " What?" There are runners on base when im up to bat? Hmmm...maybe i need to pay more attention to the game."

Rube Waddell of the PHA leads the majors in wins with 25. I asked him about his confidence when he strolled up to the mound before a game."
Rube Waddell: "I have confidence that my team will pick up after me. I just pitch to pitch, and i guess i pitch good."

In the NL, the Cubs went 19-6 for the month of September. The Pirates went 10-16. What did that add up to? The top spot in the National League as the Chicago Cubs clinched the number 1 spot and will wait for the winner of the series between the Reds and the Pirates. The NYG made a nice run at the playoffs as well but could not catch Cincinnati who clinched their second straight playoff spot.

The AL went down to the wire as well as the Cleveland Naps finished at the top of the division...sort of...because of a scheduling glitch, they DID get the number one spot, but the Philadelphia Athletics had a higher percentage. After checking with the commissioner of baseball...he decided that even though PHA had higher percentage, CLE had more wins and played more games. So...CLE was awarded the number one spot and the Athletics will have to play the ALDS against the Boston Americans.

Joe Kelley of the Cincinnati Reds finished 3rd in the NL in batting with a .350 AVG. He was pleased as punch!
Joe Kelley: "Its nice to know that i did what i could to help my team get back to the playoffs. But I know i can do even better from here on in."

Cy Falkenberg of the Pittsburgh Pirates was one of the league leaders in strikeouts.
Cy Falkenberg: "I sometimes think that my coaches think im a little slow in some areas...but hey, i am getting batters out, you know?
