Monk Cunningham, Bost. (33 L 15-15 2.19) vs. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 13-16 2.06) Won: 5 to 4 Boston out-hit us 13 to 12 and each team made 4 errors. 10 of Boston's 13 hits were made by 3 players: rf Bill Enright had a double and 4 hits, lf Jimmy Tolle had 3 and 2b Will Surace in his first game back since being injured in Spring Training went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs. He played 4 games in the International Association for Lynn to get back in playing shape and went 10 for 20 with 3 doubles. rf Len Cardillo was the hero for us with 3 hits and a 2-out triple with a runner on base in the 7th that broke a 4-4 tie. lf Joe Marks also had 3 hits and ss Enoch Polm had 2. Other doin's: Baltimore (17) at Philadelphia (7): Miller Bullock (10-11) over Paul Skinner (17-11). 2b Joe Ricketts had 5 hits and scored 3 times for Baltimore. I heard the Reds manager ate his hat in that eighth inning. That actually true?
Why can't Monk subdue these Haymakers? Gotta use some spit!

Saturday July 8 vs. Washington Olympics (16-24 tied for 7th place in the Liberty League)
Washington looks like a team that Dan Melvin would do well against. He has been much tougher on right-handers than left-handers so far and the Olympics only have one left-handed bat on their roster at the moment. Pete Tyson, Wash. (28 L 13-14 2.33) vs. Dan Melvin, Troy (27 R 6-4 2.83) Won: 9 to 0 Dan Melvin with a 5-hitter for his league-leading 3rd shutout! Not bad for your backup boxman! We had 2, count 'em, 2 (!!), 3-run home runs in this game! rf Len Cardillo in the 4th inning and 3b Monk Kelly in the 5th. ss Enoch Polm had 3 hits. Other doin's: Baltimore (1) at New York (8): John Kyle (4-8) over Miller Bullock (10-12). Kyle also had a pair of hits to raise his average to .130. St. Louis (7) at Boston (4): John Bailey (1-4) over Monk Cunningham (15-17). lf Bill Hummel had a double and 3 hits for the Brown Stockings. Philadelphia (9) at Detroit (4): Paul Skinner (18-11) over John Walker (9-7). Skinner had a double and 3 RBIs. Down in the International Association, the Columbus Buckeyes repeated their 8th inning heroics of the last game. This time they were down 9 to 2 against the Lynn Live Oaks and scored 12 times in the 8th frame. The final score was 16 to 10 in favor of Columbus. |

First team to ever toss back-to-back shutouts! 2b Dan Owens and 1b Willard DeVaux each had 3 hits. DeVaux had a double and Owens had a triple. Other doin's: St. Louis (8) at Philadelphia (10): Paul Skinner (19-11) over John Bailey (1-5). 1b Jack Farnham had 3 hits, a double and 4 RBIs for Philly. Boston (6) at Washington (3): Monk Cunningham (16-17) over Pete Tyson (13-16). Cunningham held Washington to 4 hits. 1b Sam Simpson had a double and 3 hits and knocked in a pair. Detroit (9) at New York (1): John Walker (10-7) over Harry Mays (18-12). Walker held New York to 5 hits. 2b Connie Frost had a double and a single and knocked in 4 runs for the Wolverines. Thursday July 13 vs. Detroit Wolverines (23-19 tied for 2nd place in the Liberty League)
John Walker, Det. (26 R 10-7 1.65) vs. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 15-16 1.99) Lost: 5 to 3 9 errors today did us in. 2 by Lowe himself, so he cannot complain too loudly. He also was our big bat in the game with 3 hits. 2b Dan Owens had 2 hits and scored 2 of our 3 runs, but also made 2 of the errors. Other doin's: Philadelphia (6) at Boston (8): Monk Cunningham (17-17) over Dave Watford (6-7). Boston scored all 8 of its runs in the 1st inning when they had 10 hits, including 3 triples. Manager Watford settled down and held the Red Caps to 5 hits the rest of the way. Baltimore (3) at Washington (12): Paul O'Sullivan (3-4) over Steve Sedam (6-14). cf Amos Martin had 4 hits, including a triple. He scored twice and knocked in 3. Saturday July 15 vs. St. Louis Brown Stockings (22-21 tied for 4th place in the Liberty League)
John Bailey, St. L. (27 R 1-5 3.40) vs. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 15-17 1.99) Lost: 14 to 0 We are the best fielding team in the Liberty League and St. Louis is only 6 errors from being the worst. Yet today we made 10 of them and St. Louis did not make any until the 9th inning when they made a harmless one. Plus we had all of 2 hits off a pitcher who had lost 5 of his 6 starts. Bailey had to leave the game in the 9th inning (just a sore shoulder), but Al Byrne finished off the shutout for him. Buck Freeman hit his 2nd home run of the year for St. Louis. Frank Scarborough made 3 of the errors in centerfield and is hitting .125 since coming up from Rochester. He's heading back tonight. Ed Tomlinson will return. Other doin's: Boston (5) at Baltimore (11): Miller Bullock (11-13) over Joe Phelps (1-2) in relief of Monk Cunningham. Cunningham hurt his elbow on the first pitch he tossed in the game and is out for the season. Philadelphia (4) at New York (2): Paul Skinner (20-11) over John Kyle (4-9). Each team only had 7 hits. Of course, that means the hard-luck Kyle takes the loss. Skinner becomes the first pitcher to reach 20 wins in the Liberty League. ss Jumbo Meek and cf Jim Kruppa each hit their first home runs of the season for Philly. Kruppa had 2 other hits besides. Washington (7) at Detroit (5): Pete Tyson (14-16) over John Walker (11-8). rf Highball Perritano had a double and 4 hits and scored 4 times for Washington. Down in the International Association, the Guelph Maple Leafs pounded the Columbus Buckeyes 23 to 4. Dick Dixson pitched the first 5 innings for Columbus. Since his demotion he is 1-4 with a 4.15 ERA. He's allowed 83 hits in 47.2 innings. |

Tuesday July 18 at Philadelphia Centennials (26-18 1st place in the Liberty League)
Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 15-18 2.17) vs. Paul Skinner, Phil. (25 L 20-11 2.35) Won: 3 to 2 in 10 innings We had 14 hits, but never could seem to get one when it mattered until the 10th inning when c Deacon Stone led off with a double and after an out was recorded, lf Len Cardillo tripled him home. Cardillo and Stone each ended up with 3 hits and Cardillo also knocked in all 3 of our runs. Lowe held Philadelphia to 7 hits. Other doin's: Detroit (12) at Baltimore (4): John Walker (12-8) over Miller Bullock (11-14). Manager/rf Jack Trammel had 5 hits and a double for Detroit. He knocked home 2 and scored 3 times. cf Roger Stewart hit a home run for the Wolverines. New York (10) at Boston (3): Harry Mays (19-13) over Joe Phelps (1-3). 2b Tom McDonald and cf Chicken Evarts each had a double, 3 hits and 3 RBIs for New York. St. Louis (3) at Washington (13): Pete Tyson (15-16) over John Bailey (2-6). cf Buck Freeman hit his 3rd home run of the year for St. Louis to take sole possession of the league lead. |

Thursday July 20 vs. New York Mutuals (23-22 tied for 4th place in the Liberty League)
Since Dan Melvin has only allowed New York 6 total runs in 3 starts against them, we'll give him the ball today. Harry Mays, N. Y. (35 L 19-13 2.44) vs. Dan Melvin, Troy (27 R 7-4 2.57) Lost: 7 to 6 in 10 innings We scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to go up 5 to 4 when c Deacon Stone doubled home 3b Monk Kelly. But New York scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the lead, 6 to 5. In the bottom of the 9th, with one out, rf Len Cardillo tripled home cf Ed Tomlinson, who had reached on an error to tie the game back up. But neither Monk Kelly nor Deacon Stone could bring Cardillo home to win the game. In the top of the 10th, lf Warren Ware hit his 2nd home run of the season to put New York back up to stay. Other doin's: Boston (2) at Detroit (5): Charlie Charles(8-4) over 31 year old Billy White (0-1) in his first start. Charles had a single and a triple and knocked in 2 runs. Philadelphia (9) at Washington (5): Dave Watford (7-7) over Paul O'Sullivan (3-5). 1b Jack Farnham and lf Dave Bigelow each hit a home run for Philly. Manager Watford won his first game in over a month. Baltimore (9) at St. Louis (3): Steve Sedam (7-14) over John Bailey (2-7). 1b Tony Chamberlin had 3 hits and a double and scored twice for the Canaries. Saturday July 22 at Boston Red Caps (24-22 tied for 3rd place in the Liberty League)
The Red Caps have lost 3 in a row since pitcher Monk Cunningham went on the shelf. I bet we can find a way to revive their fading hopes..... Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 16-18 2.13) vs. Joe Phelps, Bost. (32 L 1-3 3.57) Lost: 6 to 4 We scored 3 times in the first and only one more the rest of the way. 2b Dan Owens had 3 hits with a triple, but did not score or drive in a run. Other doin's: Philadelphia (15) at Baltimore (2): Paul Skinner (21-12) over Miller Bullock (11-15). ss Jumbo Meek had 5 hits including a double for Philly. He scored 3 times and knocked in 2. c Pidgey Weaver had 3 hits and a double and knocked in 3. St. Louis (9) at Detroit (5): John Bailey (3-7) over John Walker (12-9). 1b Oren Chapman had 4 hits and knocked in a pair. 2b Bob Rene had 3 hits and a double and knocked in 4. Washington (3) at New York (5): John Kyle (5-9) over Pete Tyson (15-17). ss Dick Comp had 3 hits for New York. Down in the International Association, Rochester beat Lynn 6 to 4. Pitcher Madison Coy improved his record to 20-11. Last edited by Questdog; 05-19-2014 at 09:08 PM. |

Tuesday July 25 at Washington Olympics (19-28 7th place in the Liberty League)
We activated rf Porter Thorpe from the disabled list and sent of Joe Marks to Rochester....and cross our fingers that the plague against the outfield has passed (and not moved to the infield or the pitching staff). Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 16-19 2.19) vs. Pete Tyson, Wash. (28 L 15-17 2.54) Won: 12 to 5 rf Porter Thorpe had 3 hits in his return, scoring twice and knocking in a run. 2b Dan Owens also had 3 hits with a double. He also scored twice and knocked one in. 1b Willard DeVaux hit a pair of doubles to knock in 2 and score twice. Game was tied at 4 apiece until we scored 8 in the 8th. c Deacon Stone was injured; diagnosis pending..... Other doin's: New York (9) at Baltimore (8) in 11 innings: Harry Mays (21-13) over Miller Bullock (11-16). Mays walked in the tying run in the bottom of the 9th, but with only 1 out he wiggled out of more damage. ss Fred Clapp had 5 hits and rf Ed Rhodes hit a home run in defeat. Detroit (4) at Philadelphia (6): Paul Skinner (22-12) over John Walker (12-10). 3b Joe Carter had 3 hits and an RBI. Boston (7) at St. Louis (5) in 20 innings: Billy White (1-1) in relief of Joe Phelps over Al Byrne (8-3) in relief of John Bailey. Phelps allowed only 6 hits in 11 innings. Bailey allowed only 5 in 9 innings. Byrne allowed only 6 in 11 innings of relief. White only allowed 2 in 9 innings of relief and singled home the two runs in the 20th inning that won the game. Thursday July 27 vs. Baltimore Canaries (18-30 8th place in the Liberty League)
Still no word on the extent of c Deacon Stone's injury. Steve Sedam, Balt. (24 R 7-14 2.89) vs. Dan Melvin, Troy (27 R 7-5 2.42) Lost: 7 to 3 5 hits against the worst pitcher in baseball that has a job. Baltimore only made 3 errors. They are the worst fielding team in the Liberty League and coming into this game averaged nearly 7 per contest. Our hitters are so bad that they not only can't get hits, their balls are easy to field, too. ss Enoch Polm had 2 hits and scored 2 of our 3 runs. rf Ed Rhodes had 4 hits and scored 3 times for Baltimore. lf Jim Long had 2 hits including his 2nd home run of the year and had 3 RBIs. Other doin's: Washington (6) at Boston (2): Paul O'Sullivan (4-5) over Billy White (1-2). 3b Pat Lee had 3 hits and scored twice and knocked in a pair for Washington. cf Amos Martin also had 3 hits and an RBI. New York (10) at Detroit (7): Harry Mays (22-13) over Charlie Charles (8-5). 2b Tom McDonald and c Ed Slater each had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. McDonald had a double. Philadelphia (14) at St. Louis (1): Dave Watford (8-7) over John Bailey (3-8). Watford held St. Louis to 5 hits. He also had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. ss Jumbo Meek had 4 hits, including 2 doubles and scored 3 times. Last edited by Questdog; 05-19-2014 at 10:42 PM. |

Saturday July 29 at Detroit Wolverines (26-23 tied for 3rd place in the Liberty League)
We finally found out c Deacon Stone has a bruised elbow and will miss another week. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 17-19 2.21) vs. John Walker, Det. (26 R 12-10 2.08) Won: 8 to 5 We did not get our first hit until the 6th inning when Abe Lowe singled. We ended up with 12. Len Cardillo had three of 'em with a double. He scored twice and knocked in 2. Other doin's: Washington (8) at Baltimore (4): Pete Tyson (16-18) over Miller Bullock (11-17). cf Amos Martin had 3 hits and scored twice for the Olympics. Boston (8) at Philadelphia (6): Joe Phelps (3-3) over Paul Skinner (22-13). Phelps also had 2 hits and a double and 2 RBIs, raising his average to .125. 3b Adolph Marr had 3 hits and his 2nd home run of the year for the Red Caps. He scored twice and knocked in 2. St. Louis (7) at New York (16): John Kyle (6-9) over John Bailey (3-9). cf Billy Simpson scored 4 times and knocked in 2 with a pair of doubles and 5 hits for the Mutuals. 2b Bob Rene had 3 hits, 3 RBIs and his 10th double and 1st home run of the year for St. Louis. New York is now the hottest team in the League with their 6th win in a row. |

Tuesday August 1 at St. Louis Brown Stockings (24-26 6th place in the Liberty League)
Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 18-19 2.26) vs. John Bailey, St. L. (27 R 3-9 3.68) Lost: 6 to 2 Once again, a pitcher that everybody else is whoopin' up shuts us down. We managed 6 measly hits. Once again, Abe Lowe was the star hitter with 2 singles. Once again, we out-errored a horrible fielding team. Good news is that ss Emil Moore, our choice out of Spring Training to be the starter, is finally healed up and will immediately be inserted in the lineup. Of course, we don't expect him to do much.... Enoch Polm and his .202 average and .850 fielding percentage will head to Rochester. Other doin's: Baltimore (3) at Boston (6): Joe Phelps (4-3) over Miller Bullock (11-18). Bullock held the Red Caps to only 7 hits; the loss is not his fault. Boston did not have an RBI in the game. rf Bill Enright had another multi-hit game with a pair of singles. It's his 4th one on the last 5 games. The only one he did not get at least 2 hits in was that 20-inning affair, where he went 0 for 9! Detroit (7) at Washington (6) in 17 innings: John Walker (13-11) over Pete Tyson (16-19). Walker went 16 innings before departing for pinch-hitter Jack Liken who doubled home a run. Tyson went the whole 17 innings. 2b Connie Frost had 5 hits for Detroit. New York (8) at Philadelphia (5): Harry Mays (23-13) over Paul Skinner (22-14). Mays had 2 hits and scored 3 times. 3b Joe Carter had a double and 4 hits in defeat for Philly. New York won their 7th in a row and have moved to within a game of the Centennials with 19 to play. Down in Rochester, ss Marty Rodgers went 0 for 5 to drop his International Association batting average to .180. |

Thursday August 3 vs. Philadelphia Centennials (30-21 1st place in the Liberty League)
Dave Watford, Phil. (34 R 8-7 3.50) vs. Dan Melvin, Troy (27 R 7-6 2.54) Lost: 4 to 1 5 whole hits today. Dan Melvin was wilder than a wildcat as he set the high-water mark for walks in a game with 6! Most pitchers find it hard to walk batters when it take 9 balls to do it, but not ol' Dan today! ss Emil Moore, in his debut, went 0 for 3 and made an error. Other doin's: Baltimore (7) at Detroit (8): Charlie Charles (9-5) over Steve Sedam (8-15). c Fred Cullen had 2 hits and 3 RBIs and his 2nd home run of the season for Baltimore. 3b Bub Nelson had a hit for the 20th straight game for Detroit. Boston (8) at New York (7): Billy White (2-2) over Harry Mays (23-14). New York out-hit Boston 13 to 7. rf John Pace had 2 hits, an RBI and scored twice for Boston. Washington (9) at St. Louis (12): John Bailey (5-9) over Paul O'Sullivan (4-6). Bailey had 2 hits to raise his average to .308. lf Bill Hummel only had 1 hit for St. Louis but scored 4 times. 3b Pat Lee had 2 hits for Washington, the 20th straight game he has had a hit. |

Saturday August 5 at New York Mutuals (29-23 tied for 2nd place in the Liberty League)
John Kyle has started once against us before and shut us out..... Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 18-20 2.26) vs. John Kyle, N. Y. (26 R 6-9 1.50) Lost: 6 to 2 We reached the heights today with 7 hits! 1st 4 batters in our lineup were 0 for 16. cf Joe Wells had 2 hits and a double, but no runs or RBIs. c Bob Adams had 2 singles and drove in a run. ss Emil Moore had a hit and no errors. We've scored 5 total runs in the last 3 games. rf Porter Thorpe has all of a sudden gone cold. Since having 3 hits in his 1sr game back from injury, he is 3 for 21 (.143). 2b Dan Owens has had 3 hitless games in a row. lf Len Cardillo, who was hotter than hell a week ago, is 1 for his last 12. Abe Lowe is the best hitter on the team right now, going 6 for his last 16, though I'd rather have him pitching better. Other doin's: Detroit (5) at Boston (4): John Walker (14-11) over Joe Phelps (4-4). Phelps held Detroit to 6 hits in defeat. 3b Bub Nelson went hitless for the Wolverines, ending his streak at 20 games. Washington (3) at Philadelphia (6): Paul Skinner (23-14) over Pete Tyson (16-20). cf Jim Kruppa had 4 hits for Philly, including a double. He knocked in 2 and scored twice. 3b Pat Lee had a single for Washington to extend his streak to 21 games, tying the all-time mark of Kruppa set earlier in the season. St. Louis (4) at Baltimore (6): Miller Bullock (12-18) over Al Byrne (8-4). As usual when Baltimore wins, 1b Tony Chamberlin had a good game. He had 3 hits and 4 RBIs. Down in Rochester, Madison Coy pitched a 5-hitter against the Manchester Reds to raise his record to 22-12. Another bad outing by Melvin and Coy will get to Troy. Hate to send the league leader in shutouts to the minors, though.....but geeze, 6 walks? |

Tuesday August 8 vs. Boston Red Caps (29-24 tied for 3rd place in the Liberty League)
We are 1-1 against Joe Phelps, but he has a 1.47 ERA against us. Joe Phelps, Bost. (32 L 4-4 2.34) vs. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 18-21 2.29) Won: 22 to 4 We got 6 hits and Boston made 4 errors and we scored 7 runs in the 1st inning! May have had more, but rf Porter Thorpe got thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Set the all-time mark for runs scored by a Liberty league team! Unbelievable! See if we can avoid getting shutout next game.... We had 20 hits and Boston made 13 errors. Everybody in the lineup had at least 2 hits! Ed Tomlinson's 2 were both doubles and he knocked in 5 runs. ss Emil Moore scored 4 times. Abe Lowe scored and knocked in 3! Wish I could have saved some of these hits up..... Skinner held Baltimore to 6 hits. cf Jim Kruppa had 3 hits and a triple for Philly. 30 year old 2b Bert Perry, making his Liberty League debut for the injured Ed Fraser, had a pair of doubles and knocked in a run.
