5/1/1903 - Veeck reaches 2000 hits
37 year old Jeff Veeck of the Providence Whalers collected career hit number 2000. Veeck has had a solid career with both the Brooklyn Brawlers and the Providence Whalers, winning 9 Gold Gloves and being selected to 5 All-Star teams. Steve 'Trixie' Nelson of the Philadelphia Freedom pitched a no-hitter against the Chicago Pirates and picked up a 2-0 win. Nelson struck out 9 while walking 2 batters. Nelson was 4-1 for the month with a 1.66 ERA and won the National League Pitcher of the Month Award. Jorge Cuesta of the Pittsburgh Rebels shut out the Washington Capitals 6-0 earlier this month. Jose 'Crab' Martinez of the Washington Capitals captured the National League Batter of the Month after hitting .357 with 6 home runs, 18 RBI, and 15 runs scored. One player I haven't talked about before is Anthony 'Fast Lane' Foster of the New York Knights. The 29 year old was named the American League Pitcher of the Month after going 4-1 with a 1.25 ERA. Last year Foster was 19-8 with a 2.39 ERA for the Knights and will be a free agent following this year. Jorge Barron of the Philadelphia Freedom hit for the cycle in a game against the New York Empires. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-05-2013 at 08:40 PM. |

6/23/1903 - Enrique Carrillo wins 300th game
43 year old Enrique Carrillo won career game number 300 today with the Chicago Pirates when he beat the New York Empires 7-5 becoming just the 4th pitcher to win 300 games. Carrillo began his career with the Philadelphia Freedom, drafted as the third overall pick in the 1881 draft. Philadelphia had Carrillo begin his career in the bullpen, and he served as their closer in 1883 saving 22 games before moving full-time into the rotation. Carrillo missed significant time in both 1888 and 1889 with injuries, but rebounded to win 22 games in his career for the first time in 1891. Carrillo again won 21 games in his final season with Philadelphia before leaving for Chicago as a free agent. At 43 years old he's a long way from 3rd place on the career wins list, needing 55 wins to tie Dillon Beeler. Career Win Leaders 1. Jared Mixon -378 2. Fernando Perez -370 3. Dillon Beeler -355 4. 8/29/1903 - Beatty hits 400th
38 year old Joe Beatty hasn't been someone I've talked about before, although I've come across his name several times, amongst league leaders and on the milestone watch. Beatty passed the 400 home run milestone with his 14th home run of the season. Beatty hit 38 home runs two years ago with Baltimore, but his power numbers since signing with the Boston Americans as a free agent have gone down significantly, hitting just 32 in the past two years. Beatty is the tenth player to hit 400 career home runs. Career Home Run Leaders 1. Mike Denton -545 2. Dennis Long - 511 3. Nick Joseph #-491 4. Bill Frazier - 462 5. Masamune Hayagawa #-449 6. 10/12/1903 - Cleveland Captures First World Series
Just last year I talked about the Cleveland Blues never appearing in the World Series, or winning the World Series. This year they managed to check both off their to-do list, after an impressive 4-0 sweep over the Pittsburgh Rebels.
Terry Robbins of the Blues was impressive in the series, winning both games he pitched, including the final game 4. Robbins had a 1.13 ERA in the series. 23 year old Daniela Parri delivered the big blows on offense for the Blues, hitting .538 for the series while homering, driving in 5 runs, and scoring 4. Coming after a season in which the youngster hit just .228 and struck out 148 times the Blues were pleased to see Parri break out in a big way, even if it was in a short series. I'll definitely plan on adding them to a draft class soon. I'm trying to finish up a couple things before getting things rolling again soon.

2/1/1904 - Two elected to Hall of Fame
Dennis 'Avenger' Long became the first position player to be elected to the Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility after receiving 85.60% of the votes. Long was the first overall player drafted in the 1877 draft by the Providence Whalers, where he played for the first 12 years of his career. Long played first base his entire career, winning two Gold Gloves and was selected to 12 All-Star teams. Long also won a pair of Batter of the Year Awards. Long is just one of two players who have hit 500 career home runs, with Long finishing second overall with 511 home runs. Long also collected 2769 hits during his career, which is the third highest total of hits in the history of the league. Long also reached two other major milestones, with 1698 runs and 1810 RBI. Ralph Dunn joins Long in the 1904 Hall of Fame class after receiving 80.29% of the vote. Dunn was appearing on the ballot for the third time. Dunn pitched for five different teams during his career and finished with a 275-229 record to go with a 3.53 ERA. Dunn added 3199 career strikeouts. While Dunn never won a Pitcher of the Year Award, Dunn was selected to 9 All-Star teams. Dunn won 20 or more games four times during his career. Two players failed to receive 10% of the vote and will no longer appear on the Hall of Fame ballot. 1. Dennis Long (1) - 85.60 2. Ralph Dunn (3) - 80.29 3. Will Wise (3) - 64.78 4. 5/1/1904 - Conigliaro captures Rookie of the Month Award
Tony Conigliaro got off to a good start for the Detroit Wolverines hitting .375 with 6 RBI in his first month to capture the Rookie of the Month Award in the National League. It's a small sample, but it's a good start for Conigliaro. Don 'No Comment' Calhoun also made the news after capturing the AL Pitcher of the Month Award after going 5-1 with a 1.61 ERA in 50 1/3 innings while striking out 53. Teammate Phil 'Gator' White won the Batter of the Month Award after hitting .368 with 8 home runs, 19 RBI, and scoring 19 runs. Unfortunately for Baltimore their two award winners aren't enough to push Baltimore higher than 6th place in the American League. Steve 'Trixie' Nelson of the Philadelphia Freedom pitched a 5 hit shutout over the Indianapolis Indians earlier this month. Jose Gonzalez needs just 20 hits to reach 3000 for his career. 40 year old Nick Joseph is on the cusp of two major milestones with 494 career home runs, and 1431 runs scored, but is currently a free agent, waiting for a team to big for his services. 6/1/1904 - Calhoun to miss 11 months
Don Calhoun has been a pitcher I've talked about quite a bit, and has gotten off to a hot start to the season by going 6-1 with a 1.40 ERA. Unfortunately for Black Sox fans Calhoun tore a ligament in his elbow and will miss the next 11 months. 20 year old Josh Gibson appears to be heating up, hitting .267 with 5 home runs over the past month. While his success has been modest, he still leads all second chancers with a 1.0 WAR. Tony Conigliaro is still performing well in Detroit with limited playing time he has posted a .357 batting average. Mickey McDermott has made a couple of starts in the minors, and served as the closer as well. His 4.70 ERA, 8 saves, and 19 strikeouts have already set career highs in the minors. Dwight Gooden began the year in the minors, but was quickly promoted to Boston where he won his first start. However, despite his 1-0 record, Gooden has a 9.53 ERA in 11 1/3 innings, 2.47 WHIP, and opponents are hitting .377 against Doc K. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-09-2013 at 11:22 PM. |

6/20/1904 - Gillespie picks up career hit number 2000
Ronnie Gillespie of the Philadelphia Freedom went 3-5 in a 13-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Rebels to pick up career hit number 2000. Gillespie is now hitting .305 for is career. Josh Gibson hasn't had too much success in his young career, but Gibson was named the AL Player of the Week after hitting .522 for the week with a pair of home runs and 5 RBI. Gibson seems to be breaking out this season, raising his batting average to .289 with 12 home runs, 33 RBI, and 38 runs scored. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-09-2013 at 11:22 PM. |
