1945 - End of Season Surprises
I always really enjoy this era in baseball. It's always fun to watch Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio replay their careers without missing time because of the war. Unfortunately within a month I got a double dose of bad news, with a pair of career ending injuries to both DiMaggio and Williams.

It is going to get worse! I keep moving forward waiting for the first, but I haven't gotten there yet. I was actually thinking about doing some resurrections with the way things are going. Stay tuned!
Here are Williams stats: And DiMaggio's: |

1946 - Brown leads the league
Willard Brown led the league again with 28 home runs, and moved up to 11th on the career leaderboard. I already talked about Ted Williams retired with 169 career home runs, far short of the 521 he hit in real life, and Joe DiMaggio retiring with 204 home runs. Also far short of the 361 career home runs he hit. Phil Weintraub also retired with 204 career home runs. Weintraub hit 32 home runs in real life. Bob Garretson debuted on the career leaders, while Bud Davis and his 195 home runs fall off. We're now down to three active members of the 400 home run club - Mel Ott, who at 37 failed to hit a home run this year, Stan Musial who hit 14 this year at 25 years old, and Duke Snider who just turned 20 and hasn't really begun his career, getting just 280 at-bats his first three years. 1947 - Brown/Kozuru tie for lead
Willard Brown finished with his ninth straight season of 20 or more home runs when he hit 29 to tie for the league lead. Brown has now passed 300 home runs (303) and at 32 should have a very good shot at 400. 24 year old Makoto Kozuru also hit 29 home runs this year to tie Brown. He's the first Nippon Pro Baseball player to appear, and he was the first player in *** history to hit 50 home runs in a season. He's a member of the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame and the *** players will add another dynamic to the league. In a way I regret my decision to use the database I did, but in a way I'm ok with that. Dick Wilson led the league with 28 home runs. Wilson was a career minor league who hit 285 home runs in the minors. 1949 - Lennon leads league
Bob Lennon led the league with 36 home runs this year. Lennon played in the majors from 1954-1957, but hit just 1 career home run. Lennon did hit 278 home runs in the minor leagues. Johnny Mize retired from baseball with 275 career home runs. In real life Mize hit 359 homers. Mickey Mantle made his debut and won Rookie of the Year in the NL for the Phillies, hitting 18 homers and hitting .280. Eddie Mathews won Rookie of the Year in the AL for the Yankees, hitting 14 home runs while hitting .244. Stan Musial had a nice rebound at 28 to win the NL Outstanding Hitter Award, hitting .346 with 22 home runs. He'll need to do better in the power department if he is going to reach 400. 1950 - Lennon sets record with 57
Bob Lennon became the first player to hit more than 50 home runs in a year when he hit 57 this year to lead the league and set a single season record. Another "minor league slugger" was second, as Ken Guettler hit 46. Chuck Workman debuted on the career home run list. Claude Wilborn retired this year with 298 career homers. Workman didn't hit any home runs in the majors, but hit 37 in the minors. 1951 - Lennon leads the league again
Bob Lennon led the league again with 44 home runs, and it's safe to say that this dynasty isn't going exactly as planned. The big guys (Ruth, Gehrig, Williams) are having their share of problems, while the surprise guys are excelling. I like surprises, but there have been a few too many so far. Hopefully the next 50 years will be a little more normal. Charlie Keller retired with 250 career home runs. In real life Keller hit 189 home runs. Bob Garretson also retired with 236 career home runs. Garretson hit 47 home runs in the minors in real life. Frank Kelleher debuted on the career leaderboards, with both Joe DiMaggio and Phil Weintraub falling off with 204 career homers. 7/17/1952 - Brown hits 400th
Willard Brown became the third person to hit 400 career home runs today when he went 2-5 with a 2 run home run in a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox. Brown hit just 1 home run in the majors during his career, but was a Negro League Slugger. With his 1 career home run in the majors the three players who have reached 400 have a combined 1 home run in real life in the majors. |

I'm sorry the underperformances keep happening with all the real guys. Maybe you should force them into the lineup or something.

I've definitely thought about that. Part of me is curious to see how long this will continue, because sooner or later one of them has to break the string. But another part of me has been thinking how to correct it in a fair way too.
