![]() Thursday July 24th, 1969 A.L. Pounds Out 10-6 Win, First Since 62' Washington, D.C.- Sal Bando's RBI double, his 2nd hit of the inning, capped off a seven run 5th inning for the American League who never looked back, on their way to a 10-6 victory over the National League, their first since 1962. A sellout crowd of 45,259 including Vice President Spiro Agnew braved a constant threat of rain on a hot muggy afternoon to see the 40th renewal after heavy thunderstorms Tuesday forced a one day postponement. President Nixon, who was to attend the night game, had to leave for his trip to the astronaut's splashdown in the Pacific Thursday. Bando, led both teams with three hits and three RBI and was named the game's MVP. Despite the setback, the National League still leads the way with a 21-18-1 record in a series once dominated by the American League. Box Score Last edited by PhillieFever; 09-30-2011 at 09:23 AM. |

![]() Monday September 29th, 1969 Dodgers Locked In Three Way Battle For Division Flag Los Angeles, Ca.- Thanks to a torrid month of September in which they've gone 21-8, the Dodgers have put themselves in a position to take the National League's Western Division flag from the surprising Astros, who have led the way since the all-star break.....and oh the Giants are here for the party as well. As it stands, the Dodgers and Astros are deadlocked at 86-73 with the Giants one game back at 85-74, and as fate would have it, the Dodgers and Astros are set to battle it out in a three game series, the last three games of the season, beginning tomorrow here at Dodger Stadium. The Giants meanwhile open a three game series tomorrow at Candlestick against the last place Padres. Here's how it all breaks down: If either the Dodgers or Astros sweep their series they win the division regardless of what the Giants do. If the Dodgers/Astros series breaks two games to one, than the winner is the division champion UNLESS the Giants sweep San Diego, in which case the Giants will play the winner of the Dodgers/Astros series in a one game playoff to decide the division winner. |

![]() Wednesday October 1st, 1969 Wilson Fans 9 In 2-0 Shutout Of Dodgers ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Giants Nip Padres 2-1 In 11 Los Angeles- In the opening game of the biggest series in the franchise's eight year history, the Houston Astros got a stellar performance from starting pitcher Don Wilson who held the Dodgers to just three hits and two walks while striking out nine in a 2-0 shutout victory, his 15th of the season. Locked into a tense pitcher's duel with LA's Don Sutton, it was Wilson himself who came through offensively, slamming an RBI double in the third, and connecting on an RBI sac fly in the fifth. Now faced with a do or die situation, the Dodgers send Claude Osteen(16-9 2.32) to the mound against the Astros Larry Dierker(18-10 2.55 ERA) Giants Survive In 11 Needing a sweep just to have a chance, the Giants went into the 8th inning of yesterday's game with the Padres trailing by the score of 1-0, but a solo homer from Ron Hunt tied the game at 1-1 and sent it into extra innings where in the bottom of the 11th, it was Hunt who came through again, slamming a line drive base hit to left, scoring Dick Dietz and giving San Francisco the 2-1 win. Later on today, the Giants will send Juan Marichal(23-8 1.99 ERA) to the hill to face off against the Padres Clay Kirby(7-20 4.18 ERA) |

![]() Thursday October 2nd, 1969 Wild Day Ends With Giants, Dodgers, And Astros All Tied! San Francisco- Willie McCovey was 3 for 3 with 2 homers and 3 RBI, Tito Fuentes added a homer, and starting pitcher Juan Marichal won for the 24th time this year, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits while walking two and striking out 10, as San Francisco defeated the last place Padres 5-1. Meanwhile down in Los Angeles, the desperate Dodgers overcame a 5-0 first inning deficit when back to back 7th inning singles by Willie Davis and Tom Haller put the Dodgers ahead to stay in a thrilling 9-8 comeback victory. What all this means is that we have a three way tie atop the division heading into the final day of the season. A Giants victory over the Padres later today guarantees them a spot in a one game playoff against the winner of tonight's Dodgers-Astros game in Dodger Stadium, a loss and it all over for the Giants, with the winner of the LA-Houston game becoming champion. Here's the pitching match-ups: San Diego(Al Santorini 11-17, 4.05 ERA) San Francisco(Gaylord Perry 17-12, 2.60 ERA) Houston(Denny LeMaster 12-13, 2.30 ERA) Los Angeles(Bill Singer 16-12, 2.04 ERA) |

![]() Friday October 3rd, 1969 Dodgers And Giants prevail! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One Game Playoff Set For Tonight Los Angeles- With absolutely everything on the line, the Dodgers got a brilliant pitching performance from Bill Singer, who held the Astros to just a single run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts in a complete game 8-1 victory. At the plate, the Dodgers got a big game out of SS Maury Wills who went 3 for 5 with a double, a 2 run triple, and three runs scored, his constant presence on the base paths also seemed to distract Houston pitching, despite the fact that he didn't even attempt a steal. LA also got a clutch homer from catcher Tom Haller, his second in two days. The Dodger victory eliminates the Astros and sets up a one game playoff against, who else, but the hated San Francisco Giants for the right to be called NL Western Division champions. The Giants earned their way into the playoff with a 5-3 victory over the stuborn Padres, who scored three times in the ninth inning before finally going down with the tying runs on base. Dave Marshall and Willie McCovey each hit homers for the Giants, while Gaylord Perry, despite a rocky 9th, finished the game and earned the win, his 18th. Today's playoff will be played at Dodger Stadium with veteran pitcher Jim Bunning(16-10, 3.14 ERA) going for the Dodgers against the Giants Bobby Bolin(8-14, 4.50 ERA). Bunning, who began the year in Pittsburgh was acquired by the Dodgers on August 15th, and since then has been the best hurler on the club, going 5-0 with a sparkling 1.58 ERA. |

![]() Saturday October 4th, 1969 Dodgers Defeat Giants 6-3, Claim Crown! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 Run 5th Sparks Team To Victory Los Angeles- Back to back two run doubles by Willie Davis and Willie Crawford highlighted a five run 5th inning for the Dodgers who went on to defeat the San Francisco Giants by the score of 6-3, capturing the National League's Western Division flag in Friday night's one game playoff here at Dodger Stadium. Starting pitcher Jim Bunning, undefeated since coming over to the Dodgers in mid August, used all of his veteran ability to escape jam after jam, allowing just 3 runs despite 10 hits and 5 walks in seven plus innings of work. In the 8th, it was relievers Jim Brewer and Joe Moeller who held the Giants in check, setting them down in order. In the 9th, with the heart of the Giants order due up, the Dodgers turned to 22 year old Alan Foster who simply dominated the desperate visitors, striking out both Willie McCovey and Bobby Bonds before allowing a two out double to Willie Mays on an 0-2 pitch. One batter later however it was all over, when Foster got Dick Dietz on a weak pop-up to first, sealing the 6-3 win and the division championship. Following a travel day today, the Dodgers will be right back at it tomorrow, facing the New York Mets in game one of the first ever best of five National League Championship Series which starts at Shea Stadium. |
