Don't remind me of the E1 World Series. I had tickets to Game 7 of that series that didn't get to be used :-(

Even in real life, though, that's somewhat anecdotal. The Tigers might have just not played well. It's possible it had nothing to do with the time off. If we had ultimate playoff customization, maybe you could get around the layoff for a first round bye by scheduling doubleheaders for round 1. In a best of 5, wrap it up in three days: doubleheader, single game, doubleheader. I would think most managers would be okay with 3 days off to heal up players and rest their pitching staff. Yes, if a team won in 5, they'd be a little bit screwed for the next series. And yes, I know this would never happen in real life (MLB, anyway), but that's the beauty of OOTP.

And that was only a few extra days spread over a four week period. (That said, a five day layoff has happened before in MLB. Specifically, in 1973 and 1975-6 there was a break of five days between the end of the regular season and the start of each league's LCS. But that break applied equally to all four post-season teams.) Last edited by Le Grande Orange; 07-07-2011 at 04:45 PM. |

Earthquake series
Speaking of layoffs, how about the 1989 "earthquake" series? A gap of something like 12 days between games 2 and 3.
But under the Costas playoff plan, you could play straight through without days off: begin round 1 the day after the close of the season, and not take a day off between round 1 and the LCS. That would minimize the down time for the team with the bye, and (admittedly) put extra pressure on the winner of round 1. Maybe those two factors even out? OK, not perfection in the real world, but surely no problem in OOTP. And for me, preferable over wild cards in either world. I don't like wild cards in baseball. |

That's still be at least three days off for the bye club assuming a best-of-5 series, or four days off for a best-of-7 series. And if any tiebreaking playoff games are needed, that adds at least one more day to the break for the bye club. |

For me, that still beats wild cards. Wild cards are so... football.
