Today's Highlights

With his solo home run in the top of the 9th inning, Angels 1B Kendry Morales has become just the 7th player in Major League Baseball history with a hitting streak of 40 games or more, and the first since Pete Rose, who in 1978 collected hits in 44 straight games. Unfortunately for the Angels though, they still cannot win with any consistency, as they fell to the Cubs by the score of 10-3. With the loss, Los Angeles now falls to 33-37, last in the AL West. For the Cubs, 3B Aramis Ramirez did some hitting of his own, going 5 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

In the nation's capital, Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle outduelled Nats phenom Stephen Strasburg, defeating him by the score of 3-0. Buehrle(5-6), twirled 7 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. As for Strasburg(2-6), who's pitched much better of late, he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 4 over 8 innings pitched.

In another tremendous outing, Pirates starter Paul Maholm improved his record to 8-2, pitching a complete game two hit shutout, as Pittsburgh defeated the Cleveland Indians by the score of 9-0. At the plate, Bucs CF Andrew McCutchen was just as impressive, going 3 for 3 with a walk, a double, a homer, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored

The Nationals have placed 27 year old lefty Sean Burnett on the 60 day DL with a torn rotator cuff, he's expected to be out for the year. In his place, the Nats have recalled pitcher John Lannon from Triple A Syracuse.

Kubel Homer Sinks Phils 4-3

Phila, Pa.- In a highly competitive ballgame, the Minnesota Twins, behind a heroic performance from LF Jason Kubel hung on to defeat the Phillies today, by the score of 4-3. Kubel, doubled, homered and knocked in three, staking the Twins to a 4-0 lead after 5 and a half innings of play, and despite a late charge by the home team, Minnesota held on for the one run victory. SP Brian Duensing picked up the victory for the Twins, going 7 and two thirds innings, and allowing 2 runs on 7 hits while walking 5 and striking out 4. The Phillies Jamie Moyer took the loss.

Hamels Sparkles In 8-0 Whitewashing Of Twins

Phila, Pa.- Phils starter Cole Hamels continues to shine in the first half of this season, improving his record to 10-3, with a complete game 3 hit 8-0 shutout of the Minnesota Twins here in Citizens Bank Park. Hamels, who walked none and struck out 8 was never in any serious trouble, and didn't allow a base runner after the 5th inning, needing just 99 pitches to finish the Twins off. At the plate, the Phillies got homers from Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez, as well as a two hit two run day from Placido Polanco.

After 41 games, the hitting streak of Kendry Morales has come to an end. In today's game against the Cubs, Morales took the collar, going 0 for 4 with a double play ground out, two fly outs, and a strike out. Said Morales "Ain't nothing bad about losing a 41 game hitting streak, it was fun while it lasted"

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed 37 year old free agent pitcher Bartolo Colon to a 1 year deal worth a total of $400,000

The Cardinals have signed free agent catcher Javier Valentin to a 1 year deal worth $400,000.

With a batting average of .500(11 for 22), which included 2 home runs and 6 RBI, Rangers LF Josh Hamilton has been awarded the AL player of the week for the week ending June 20th. For the season, Hamilton is batting an even .300 with 10 homers, 27 RBI and 31 runs scored.

In the NL, Cubs 3B Aramis Ramirez had a huge week this week, batting .542(13 for 24) with 4 homers and 12 RBI, earning himself player of the week honors for this week. For the year, Ramirez is batting .317 with 18 homers and 52 RBI, he's also scored 47 runs.

Today's Highlights

In a wild game here in D.C., the Washington Nationals pounded out a season high 20 hits, on their way to an 11-7 defeat of the Kansas City Royals. Adam Kennedy and Leonard Davis each homered for the Nats, but nobody was better than Christian Guzman, who went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Alex Gordon doubled, homered and knocked in 3 for KC.

In a terrific performance, Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez twirled 8 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6 Cincinnati batters, as the Athletics blanked the Reds 3-0, for their 8th win in their last 10 games, putting them in first place in the AL West, a game and a half ahead of the Mariners. Closer Andrew Bailey needed just 9 pitches in the 9th to pick up his 10th save of the season.

In another fine pitching performance, the D-Backs Edwin Jackson held the Yankees scoreless over 5 and two thirds innings, allowing 6 hits while striking out 11, helping lead Arizona to a 3-0 victory over the defending world series champions. Catcher Miguel Montero connected on a 2 run homer in the 5th, breaking a scoreless tie, and putting the Snakes ahead to stay, Drew Macais added an RBI single in the 8th to close out the scoring.

Nationals pitcher Chien-Ming Wang has been placed on the 15 day disabled list with a strained forearm. The injury is expected to keep Wang out of action for 2 months.

All season they've been battling injuries, yet they still sit just a game and a half behind New York. The Rays however are on the move, winning 5 straight, and 12 of their 17 games in June.

Valbuena's Key Hit Sinks Phils 5-4

Phila, Pa.- Luis Valbuena's two out two run triple in the top of the 5th inning off of Phillies starter Joe Blanton(5-4) proved to be the difference in the ballgame, as the Cleveland Indians took game one of this three game set, defeating the Phils by the score of 5-4. Indians starter Jake Westbrook(5-2) was just good enough, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the 8th. From there, the Cleveland bullpen took over, as 4 different pitchers combined to hold the Phillies hitless over the final two frames to preserve the victory for Westbrook. Playing for the first time since injuring his shoulder on May 29th, Phillies RF Jayson Werth was 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Braves closer Billy Wagner nailed down his 400th career save today, inducing a Paul Konerko ground out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning, as Atlanta held on to defeat the White Sox by the score of 8-4. With 400 career saves, Wagner sits 5th all time, behind Trevor Hoffman(605), Mariano Rivera(541), Lee Smith(478), and John Franco(424).

The Tampa Bay Rays and star CF B.J. Upton have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension, that will pay the 25 year old $6,250,000 a year over the next two years.

Twins CF Denard Span has suffered a setback in his recovery from a sore shoulder, and will be out another 1-2 weeks.

The Cincinnati Reds have shipped 29 year old LF Johnny Gomes to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for 27 year old CF Franklin Gutierrez.

The Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates have come to terms on a deal in which the Indians will send 26 year old 1B Jordan Brown to the Pirates in exchange for 23 year old minor league pitcher Bryan Morris and 20 year old minor league pitcher Quinton Miller.

Howard Mashes 21st In Phils 7-3 Win Over Tribe

Phila, Pa.- Locked into another tight ballgame, the Phillies took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning, where with one out and a man on first, the slumping Ryan Howard, who had just 4 hits in his last 35 at bats, stepped to the plate, and did what he does best, slamming a first pitch fastball over the right field wall, as the Phils went on to defeat the visiting Indians by the score of 7-3. Starting pitcher J.A. Happ struggled a bit with his control, but battled his way through 5 and two thirds innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks while striking out 9 Cleveland batters, earning his 4th win of the season against 6 defeats. For the Indians, Grady Sizemore had two hits including a 2 run homer to lead Cleveland.

Officials from the White Sox and Mariners have announced that they have finalized a deal in which Chicago will send 28 year old SS Alexi Ramirez and $700,000 in cash to the Mariners in exchange for 27 year old starting pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith, a port sider from Sydney Australia.

The Seattle Mariners continue to be active in the trade market, acquiring 28 year old SP Dustin McGowan from the Blue Jays in exchange for 20 year old minor league 3B Mario Martinez.

Rumored for several weeks now, team officials for the Marlins and Angels have confirmed a deal between the teams in which the Marlins will ship 28 year old reliever Dan Meyer to the Angels in exchange for 23 year old minor league pitcher Trevor Bell.

The New York Yankees have placed veteran catcher Jorge Posada on the 15 day disabled list with a torn hamstring. The injury is expected to keep Posada out of the lineup for about a month. Phils Use Longball To Sink Tribe

Phila, Pa.- Cleveland pitching could do nothing to stop the hard hitting Phillies today, as Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, and Raul Ibanez all went deep in the Phillies convincing 8-3 victory here at Citizens Bank Park. 47 year old starter Jamie Moyer(5-5) continued to defy father time, going 8 strong and allowing 3 unearned runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. Howard, who homered for the second straight day while also knocking in 4 runs is having what many consider his best season ever, hitting .293 with a league best 22 homers and 59 RBI, not bad for a man who usually saves his best hitting for August and September.

Todd Helton's RBI single capped off a 3 run 7th inning, as Colorado went on to defeat the Red Sox 4-3, sweeping the 3 game series and moving within a game and a half of the first place Dodgers.

Tigers LF Johnny Damon has been placed on the 15 day DL with a severely sprained ankle which may keep him out for as much as 2 months, in his place, Detroit has called up LF Jeff Frazier from Toledo.

Phillies Win 3rd Straight On 9th Inning Homer By Werth

Toronto, Ont.- In a wild game here at Rogers Centre, the Philadelphia Phillies triumphed over the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 10-9, thanks to a 9th inning solo homer by Jayson Werth that snapped a 9-9 tie and eventually gave the Phils the win in a game in which the teams combined for 39 hits, eight of them being home runs. In his return to Toronto, Phillies starter Roy Halladay did not have his best game, lasting just 6 innings, while allowing 6 runs on 14 hits, with a walk and 8 strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision.

Cardinals outfielders Ryan Ludwick and Colby Rasmus have both been placed on the DL today, Ludwick with a strained back, and Rasmus with back spasms. They'll be replaced in the lineup by Pablo Ozuna and Joe Mather, both up from Memphis.

Tigers LF Carlos Guillen will be out of action for about 6 weeks with tendinitis in his shoulder, he's been placed on the 15 day Disabled list. Utility man Cesar Nicholas has been brought up from Toledo.

Power Surge Continues As Phils Win 4th Straight

Toronto, Ont.- The Phillies offense continues to click on all cylinders, getting solo homers from Jayson Werth and Chase Utley, and a grand slam from Ryan Howard, on their way to a 9-2 pounding of the Toronto Blue Jays. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels(11-3) continued his resurgence, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits over 7 and a third innings, for his 9th straight winning decision. Relief man Ryan Madson finished up, holding the Jays scoreless over the final inning and two thirds. 2B Aaron Hill homered for Toronto.

Royals starter Zack Greinke(7-4) was simple awesome today, allowing just two hits while striking out 10 in a complete game 5-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals. Offensively, KC was once again led by 3B Alex Gordon, who was 3 for 3 with a walk, a double, and 2 RBI. For the season, Gordon is batting .344 with 11 homers and 45 RBI.

Orioles 2B Brian Roberts has been placed on the 15 day DL with a herniated disk in his back, he's expected to be out for about a month. In his place, the O's have brought up Rhyne Hughes from Triple A Norfolk.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and #2 overall draft pick Bryce Harper have agreed on a minor league contract with a signing bonus of $10,650,000. He'll make his pro debut as a member of the West Virginia Power, the Pirates single A affiliate in the Southern League.

Phils Sweep Jays As Interleague Play Comes To An End

Toronto, Ont.- With today's 4-1 victory over the Blue Jays, the Phillies ended interleague play with a bang, sweeping the Jays on their home turf to finish the season 13-5 against the American League. In today's game, the Phils took a 2-1 lead into the 9th inning, where catcher Carlos Ruiz smashed a two run homer, giving closer Brad Lidge a bit of breathing room. Turns out, Lidge didn't need it, as he retired the Jays on 9 pitches, picking up his 11th save of the season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded 27 year old pitcher Daniel McCutchen to the Royals in exchange for 23 year old minor league pitcher Aaron Crow.

Rumors out of New York, have the Mets shopping around 35 year old 3B Fernando Tatis, and while a deal is not imminent, Tatis has acknowledged that he may be on the move.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers have come to terms on a deal in which the Jays will send 25 year old pitcher Ricky Romero to Milwaukee in exchange for 20 year old minor league 2B Brett Lawrie, and 22 year old minor league pitcher Rafael Dolis.

26 year old Royals closer Joakim Soria suffered a shoulder impingement in today's game, and early reports are that he is out for the season.
