Week 1 Standings

1st Half Standings (May 9th, 2011)

W L PCT GB This Week Odds
Alton 4 1 .800 -- 4-1 41.37%
Edwardsville 3 2 .600 1 3-2 21.91%
Belleville 3 2 .600 1 3-2 14.93%
O'Fallon 3 2 .600 1 3-2 8.89%
Jerseyville 3 2 .600 1 3-2 8.02%
Columbia 2 3 .400 2 2-3 2.54%
Breese 1 4 .200 3 1-4 1.21%
Staunton 1 4 .200 3 1-4 1.13%
Alton gets out on top in 2011 with a nice 4-1 start. Breese, the 2010 Champs, lost SP John Kennedy to Columbia in free agency during the off-season, but added to their offense. Nonetheless, they stumble out of the gate and find themselves 3 games out already. Edwardsville, Belleville, O'Fallon, and Jerseyville all have winning weeks and share 2nd place.

Starting this year, I've added a new column to the standings ("Odds"). This is a simulated estimate of each team's chances of winning the half.

Player of the Week:

Mike Weaver (1B) -- Staunton Rebels
8 for 19 (.421), 4 HR, 7 RBI, 6 R

Staunton 2 8 .200 6 1-4 0.06%
O'Fallon was perfect this week (5-0) and moved into 1st place. Alton, Belleville, and Jerseyville all went 3-2 and are hanging right in there. We're starting to see some separation after that, but it's still early. O'Fallon will be playing Belleville and Alton next week, so they could potentially solidify their lead.

Staunton 4 11 .267 8 2-3 0.02%
Alton had a monster week, going 5-0 including a 3-game sweep of O'Fallon, and moved back into 1st place. Breese was also on the rise, moving into 3rd place, 4 games back. The biggest loser this week was Belleville; they went 0-5 and are now 6 games behind the leader. This is the first week that someone's gone over 50% in the odds of winning the half. Alton will have a chance to improve their lead next week as they face Edwardsville and Staunton.

Staunton 6 14 .300 10 2-3 0.00%
Alton (4-1) continues to pile up the wins, but O'Fallon (4-1) matched them this week and remains 2 games back. The rest of the league wasn't so lucky. Every other team lost ground and currently finds themselves under .500. With 30 games to play it looks like we've got a 2 team race. Next week, Alton will face Columbia/Belleville while O'Fallon will face Staunton/Breese.

Staunton 8 17 .320 11 2-3 0.00%
The theme this week was stasis. Alton (3-2) is still ahead of O'Fallon (3-2) by a couple games, and everyone else is still under .500. With 25 games to play, this is a two horse race. Alton's got the edge for now, but there's still time for O'Fallon to make a run at them. Looking to next week, Alton will face Staunton and Jerseyville, while O'Fallon will see Columbia and Belleville.

Staunton 8 22 .267 14 0-5 0.00%
Alton (3-2) and O'Fallon (3-2) keep the pace. Breese (5-0) got hot this week and picked up a couple games, but they still find themselves 6 back. With 20 games left to play in the 1st half, it will be tough for anyone but Alton or O'Fallon to come away with the lead. And they'll continue to battle indirectly next week: Alton will get Edwardsville and Columbia; O'Fallon will play Jerseyville and Staunton.

Staunton 10 25 .286 16 2-3 0.00%
For the first time in four weeks, O'Fallon (3-2) failed to match Alton (4-1) and they're now 3 games back. Breese (4-1) is still hanging around and Belleville (5-0) has joined them on the fringe. But with just 15 games to play in the 1st half, it's unlikely either will be able to catch Alton. Next week, Alton will play 2 against O'Fallon and 3 against Breese, so if they have another good week, they will all but clinch it.

Staunton 14 26 .350 15 4-1 0.00%
Alton (3-2) won both games against O'Fallon (3-2) this week and clinched the tiebreaker between them. That, plus time running down in the half (10 games to go) saw their odds of winning increase from about 90% to 97%. Breese (3-2) and Belleville (3-2) also kept pace, but they're too far back with too little time. Alton will face Staunton and Belleville next week, while O'Fallon will play Columbia and Breese.

O'Fallon (3-2) matched Alton (3-2) this week, but time is running out. There's only 5 games left in the half, O'Fallon trails by 3 games, and Alton has the tiebreaker. Alton's magic number is 2, meaning they need just two more wins (or two more O'Fallon losses, or one of each) to clinch. Alton will play Jerseyville and Edwardsville next week, while O'Fallon gets Belleville and Jerseyville. We'll now follow these two teams game-by-game until the half is decided.

Jerseyville 3, Alton 2

Jerseyville only had three baserunners, but they made the most of them. SS Ralph Adams hit a solo HR in the 2nd and 2B Donald Gallagher hit a two-run shot in the 5th. It was only the 2nd home run on the year for both players. Alton lacked timely hitting in this one. They were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring and two outs. CF Burton Hunt also led off Alton's 8th inning with a triple, but the River Hawks couldn't get him in.

O'Fallon 4, Belleville 2

2010's Hitter of the Year, LF John McNeal got O'Fallon on the board with a 3-run HR in the 1st. It was his 11th on the year. That was all the scoring the Immortals would need. SP Arthur Scott threw 7 strong innings (2 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 K) and picked up his league-leading 9th win this year. CL David Williams nailed it down by striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth. With this win, O'Fallon moves to 2 games back of Alton with 4 to play.

Alton 4, Jerseyville 3 (10 innings)

Jerseyville had Alton down to their last out, but River Hawks' RF Alex Koch tied the game with an RBI double in the 9th to force extras. Jerseyville took the lead again in the top of the 10th on PH Erza Ross's RBI single, but Alton came back a second time in as many innings. With one on and no one out, 3B Justin Smith went deep with a walk-off HR to give Alton the win. This win combined with O'Fallon's loss clinched the half for Alton.

Belleville 7, O'Fallon 4

O'Fallon's table-setters did their job today (#1 and #2 batters were 6-for-9), but the middle of the lineup was quiet (#3-5 were 2-for-12). And O'Fallon's pitchers had trouble keeping Belleville off-base. The Cannons had runners everywhere: they had 14 hits and 7 walks. RF Billy Alexander went 3-for-5 and drove in the go-ahead run for Belleville in the 7th. With this loss, O'Fallon was eliminated. We'll have to see what the 2nd half has in store for them.

FINAL 1st Half Standings (July 11th, 2011)

W L PCT GB This Week
1st Alton 36 14 .720 -- 4-1
2nd O'Fallon 30 20 .600 6 1-4
3rd Breese 28 22 .560 8 3-2

8th Staunton 16 34 .320 20 1-4
O'Fallon was within 2-3 games back of Alton until the very end. With 4 games to play, just 2 games separated the two, but O'Fallon lost their last 4 while Alton won their last 4. Last year's champion, Breese, stumbled out of the gate, but played well over their last 26 games (18-8) and should be one to watch in the 2nd half. Alton certainly looks formidable. They were in the top 3 in every hitting and pitching category that counts, with a lot of #1's. But they may regress some and open the door for others in the 2nd half.

There wasn't a lot of separation in the HML 1st half. Carlyle (affiliated with Breese) got hot and emerged from the pack about mid-way through and then held off a late charge from Brighton (affiliated with Jerseyville) to win.

FINAL 1st Half Standings (July 11th, 2011)

                        W L PCT GB

3rd Lebanon 27 23 .540 6
4th Trenton 27 23 .540 6
5th Bunker Hill 26 24 .520 7
6th Grafton 26 24 .520 7
7th Freeburg 18 32 .360 15
8th Bethalto 14 36 .280 19
Valmeyer (affiliated with Columbia), Troy (affiliated with Edwardsville), Lebanon (affiliated with O'Fallon), and Trenton (affiliated with Breese) were very close most of the way, but Lebanon and Trenton went a little cold and Valmeyer got a little hot. Still, the top 6 teams were only separated by 7 games and were all over .500. Should be interesting to see who comes out on top in the 2nd half.
