I wouldn't mind seeing holding and interference calls done away with completely, maybe replaced with a roughing penalty or something to keep players from outright mauling each other.

Or change holding so you can basically do anything you want to a guy as long as it's to the torso between the shoulders and waist. So the only holding calls would be blatant stuff like wrapping your arms around a guy or hitting them in the head or something. I'd also make the head-slap that defensive players routinely get away with a 15 yarder.

The NFL is making money hand over fist. It's so successful that accused murders and dog killers are embraced back in the league after their legal troubles are resolved. Coaches who blatently cheat are hailed as hall of famers and nobody blinks an eye. The NFL doesn't need to be fixed. It's working great.

I'd like to see the option on the pro level, too, but until the players stop drugging, er... never mind.
But that doesn't mean the offensive players aren't bigger / faster as well. As I've said before, Vick, Dunn and Duckett could have run a very effective Flexbone in Atlanta.

If you got rid of holding calls the offense couldnt be stopped. The TE would hook the DEs arm every play while the WRs grab the corners and put them on the sidelines. Who is left for outside containment?

I don't know why they're afraid. The injury part is a non-factor: all the good option QBs are either cut or moved to another position where they're usually no good, so there are dozens who're freely available. Gather up a bunch, stick some more on the practice squad, and hope eight of 'em don't get hurt in one year.

I think the first thing to do would be to speed the game up a tad. Take 5 seconds off the play clock. That'll speed things up a little bit, an extra play or two, a little more action. If everyone seems to cope alright with it maybe take another 5 seconds off.

I believe in the NFL it's legal to play 12 offensive players (or possibly more?) if you only play 10 defensive players (or possibly fewer?) - of course this has to be maintained for the whole game. How about if every team HAD to choose between having their 10 or 12 on offense or defense. That might be fun. Or they all could do it one week a season for a laugh.

Another thing, perhaps, no microphones.

The people saying that they should run the spread (which actually came from the NFL to college, but that's another topic) or option... The NFL is the biggest copycat league in the world (see: Wildcat formation). Don't you think that if the Oregon spread or the QB option would work in the league, we'd see someone doing it?

Not necessarily. The wildcat would have worked 4 years ago, but it takes that first team to get it going. Same goes for most innovations that are laughed at. That kind of copycatting is just as common. It cuts both ways.

It may not work, I have no idea, but "if it works someone would do it" doesn't seem to be reason enough.

Are you sure about this? How come I've never, ever heard anyone mention this in 30 years of watching the NFL? You'd think some team would have done it sometime, like when facing a big offensive team with a shorthanded defense.

One thing that always bothers me is that if the offense commits a penalty in side their 20 yard line the penalty distance is halved but that never seemed fair. If you commit a holding on the 10 yard line you lose 5 yards. I think they should then move the line to gain 5 yards further to make the penalty the same distance in the end.

What? I have serious doubts that's true in any league, anywhere, ever.

That's an interesting idea. So if it was 1st and 10 from there own 1 and they commit a false start, instead of being 1st and 10 yards 1 foot 6 inches it becomes 1st and 15 from the 1.

ACtually, I think it'd be 1st and 15 yards from the 1/2 yard line

What about this: When a penalty would otherwise back a team into their own end zone, it's called a safety. Or else put it at the 1/2 yard line.

- Shorten the game. Less commercial breaks, it was disgusting to listen to the Niners/Seahawks game on the radio last weekend and be informed at least 4 or 5 times during the broadcast that a play was waiting and the players were doing nothing because of a TV time out. Just ridiculous.

- Shorten the play clock. One of the things I absolutely hate about football is the ability for a team to eat up the last 4 or 5 MINUTES of a game while only running a handful of plays because they wait for 44.5 of the 45 second play clock to run off.

- Stop protecting certain players, specifically quarterbacks. It's damn near impossible to tackle a QB now without a penalty. A late hit is one thing, but getting hit is part of the friggin game.

- QUIT FINING PLAYERS FOR CELEBRATING. IT'S A GAME FOR CHRISSAKES. I don't care how many times OchoCinco has been fined already, it's utter rubbish that he's fined $30K for wearing a sombrero on the sideline after scoring, and yet Tommie Harris was fined "only" $7500 for THROWING A PUNCH AT AN OPPONENT.

Disagree with this. It's not a game, it's a business. That's why everyone involved picks up cheques each week, and why you have to shell out big bucks to attend the game.

I personally find all the celebrating unprofessional. These guys celebrate after nearly every play and after they accomplish a task which they are being paid to do in the first place. Oh, wow, the linebacker got a sack. Let's jump up and down and do a dance to celebrate doing the very thing he was supposed to do.

It'd be like airline pilots, after landing the plane, jumping out of their seats and giving each other a high-five for having landed the plane. It'd be like a taxi driver getting out of his car and doing a victory dance for having successfully dropped you off at your destination.

A little emotion is fine. But the degree of celebrating now is just stupid. Act like a professional.

A professional playing a game that's supposed to be for our entertainment.

Besides, there are already penalties for excessive celebration, but the NFL is fining players for everything these days.

Regardless, there's no excuse for fining a guy for celebrating 4 times the amount that the guy who committed assault is fined.

Yeah I couldn't find anything in the rules (2006 ones were the ones I looked at- in fact they said offense had to have 11 players). I'm sure I remember an analyst saying it was a rule but it may have been an old one or a different league or something. Or I may have just been drunk.

Mind you, I've never heard dropkicks mentioned and you can do them. Bring back dropkicks!
