“It’s on, and now it’s personal!” By Hector Gonzalez Thank God for Hugh Hefner! Who knew that he was such a huge boxing fan? When he found out the Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean fight wasn’t going to take place it apparently was enough of a disappointment that he cancelled a fabulous party planned that weekend at Playboy Mansion. Now fate has intervened, with Rourke and Hefner by chance running into one another recently and having a long conversation about the postponed fight, which was looking like it would never be rescheduled. It now appears the fight, which barbershops and hair salons across the USA have been discussing, will finally take place. Last night in Beverly Hills, Butterbean 24-1 (19) forced the fight with Mickey Rourke to take place, when he openly called Rourke out after stopping a man named William Harris (4-1 record) inside of 4 rounds and a member of his entourage insulted one of Mickey’s dogs. Butterbean probably had nothing to do with it, but members of the Butterbean entourage began ripping apart a stuffed dog in the ring, then threw the stuffing at Rourke, who was sitting ringside next to Hugh Hefner. An unidentified member of the entourage began yelling, “THIS IS WHAT BUTTERBEAN IS GOING TO DO TO YOU AND YOUR DOGS IF YOU EVER FIND THE GUTS TO FIGHT!” Mickey went ballistic and attempted to get into the ring. Fortunately two of Mickey's friends, Sylvester Stallone and Tupac, were sitting nearby and able to physically prevent Mickey Rourke from climbing between the ring ropes. Rourke wanted to fight Butterbean right then for free, without any gloves! Knowing that Mickey Rourke is an avid dog lover, it was a clear attempt by the camp of Butterbean to get under Mickey Rourke’s skin and get him to sign a fight contract for 4 rounds. It worked. The sticking point in negotiations at this point had been how many rounds the fight would be, with Butterbean’s promoter Bob Arum, insisting on 4 rounds and Rourke wanting 8 or 10. Well, Bob Arum got his way. Mickey was so hot after the public insult to him and his dogs that he signed the contract then and there at ringside. The fight will be a 4 rounder at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion on Saturday, October 12, 1996. Stated Rourke’s manager Matt Murphy who was also present for the unexpected drama, “Mickey was pissed when Butterbean’s people pulled that stunt. Whether Butterbean knew or not that they were going to be so juvenile and classless is immaterial. Mickey is holding Butterbean accountable. Mickey loves his dogs. He loves all animals really. Now he is going to hurt Butterbean for this.” When asked how many rounds he thinks it will last, Murphy was non-committal, “I really don’t know. I kinda wish Mickey had not just rushed into signing the contract for only 4 rounds. Really….that was a pretty smart stunt by the Butterbean camp, because later this week a contract was going to be signed for the fight to be at a compromise of 6 rounds. Butterbean showed tonight that he tires easily and he’d be a dead man walking after round 4 against Mickey. Still, Mickey will wipe the canvas with his fat ass in a 4 rounder!” When asked if the weight difference would be a factor, Murphy responded with, “The weight difference will be a challenge for Mickey. Butterbean weighed what…300 pounds tonight? (Butterbean actually weighed 316 pounds for his fight with William Harris.) So that’s a 125 pound advantage over what Mickey has been fighting at. Mickey has been killing himself though to make 175. His metabolism at age 39 (turns 40 in September) is not what it once was. Mickey will probably come in at around 195 and has grown into a natural cruiser weight.” Butterbean has been very active since the December 1995 bout was postponed, going 9-0 (9) since suffering his first loss. This will be Mickey Rourke’s first fight since that December night when 16,000+ at Madison Square Garden and thousands more on HBO witnessed him take a ferocious beating at the hands of Darren Zenner. Mickey gained plenty of respect that night for his ability to take punishment without quitting, but he also showed the physical slowness of a man in his late 30’s. Rourke may have been a decent athlete in his 20’s and early 30’s, but he resembled a very easy to hit middle aged man last December. Along with the disadvantage in weight, and inactivity (it will be Mickey’s first fight in 10 months), Mickey will face Butterbean without his friend and world class trainer Freddie Roach in the corner. It was mutually understood that the next time Mickey didn’t follow Roach’s strict training requirements it would be the last fight they worked together. When Mickey blew off training for a few nights of boozing and womanizing less than 2 weeks before the bout with Darren Zenner, Roach made it clear he would not be Mickey’s trainer after the fight concluded. True to his word, Roach has left. Rourke’s expert cutman Chuck Bodak has agreed to remain, but it is not yet known who his new trainer will be. The rumor in several Los Angeles boxing gyms is that former WBC bantam weight champion Alberto Davila will take over that role. The Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean undercard is still to be determined, with Hugh Hefner stating that it will be "memorable and special". Hugh Hefner plans additional entertainment for Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean boxing show By Hector Gonzalez The upcoming October 12 Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean battle will be shown on Pay-Per-View for $19.95. The added attraction is a wet t-shirt contest featuring five of 1996’s hottest women in Hollywood. Demi Moore, Winona Ryder, Bridget Fonda, Sharon Stone, and Alicia Silverstone as round card girls. The woman will be voted on by the fans in attendance for who is the “Playboy Mansion Wet T-Shirt Champion of the Night”! When the Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean fight concludes the 5 women will take one another on in a mud wrestling battle royale. A makeshift pool of mud will be setup inside the ring, with the last woman standing declared the winner. The goal is to throw, by any means available, the other women out of the ring. The only rule is there are NO RULES! The lucky referee for this contest, who declares when one of the contestants has been eliminated, is Mills “Let’s get it on!” Lane. Photos of the 5 starlets that have agreed to perform and compete for undisclosed amounts of money, put up by Hugh Hefner, as part of the Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean boxing show. |

4 Round Midget Weight World Championship added to Playboy Mansion fight card By Hector Gonzalez The promotional team for the Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean extravaganza has added an intriguing World Championship to the undercard. A 4 round fight in the newly created Midget Weight Division (any fighter below 98 pounds) is set to take place. Problem is only one fighter has been found acceptable by the California Athletic Commission to battle for this newly created World Championship. Mexico’s Midget Wrestling Champion and living legend, Mascarita Sagrada will make his professional boxing debut on October 12, against the infamous “still to be determined” opponent. An added highlight is that Sagrada will be unmasked for the first time ever in the Playboy Mansion ring. In Mexico, where Midget Wrestling is very popular, odds are being given on who Mascarita Sagrada really is. Of course, that hinges on a suitable opponent being found that meets the strict criteria of the California Athletic Commission. The California Commission has emphatically stated, “We will not allow a fight involving Sagrada to turn into a wrestling circus act. His opponent must convince us that he can really fight. Boxing is not like pro wrestling. This is for real.” Mascarita has been training in Mexico with world respected trainer Ignacio Beristain and reportedly shows a natural gift for throwing punches. Sagrada claims that his years of combat in the ring as a wrestler provide him “with a level of comfort that few professional boxers ever reach. I want Ricardo Lopez in my next fight!” With a guaranteed payday of $30,000 and international exposure on pay-per view there have been several applicants vying for the opportunity to fight Sagrada, but thus far none have been found acceptable by the California Commission. Mascarita Sagrada opponent found By Hector Gonzalez Less than 2 weeks until fight time and an opponent for Mascarita Sagrada has been found. A local 23 year old from Los Angeles has been approved by the California Athletic Commission to fight for the newly created Midget Weight World Championship. The unknown Jason Acuna, who goes by the nickname of “Wee Man”, has been training alongside Mickey Rourke at the “Outlaw Boxing” gym in Los Angles for the past two months. Apparently Rourke met and befriended Acuna on the set of the movie “Bullet”, earlier this year. Acuna’s role in the movie was so small, as the owner of something called “Hell’s Hole”, that he is not listed in the movie credits. An exceptional skateboarder, Acuna is optimistic the time he has spent training with Rourke, under the tutelage of Albert Davila, will be enough to defeat the highly hyped Mascarita Sagrada. Acuna flexes what he has in store for Sagrada on October 12. |

Tale of the tape: Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean By Hector Gonzalez TALE OF THE TAPE 10-12-96 MICKEY ROURKE vs. BUTTERBEAN Mickey Rourke Record 11-2-3 (5) Weight 195 Height 5 11 Reach 73 HP 5 Punches 28-28 Defense +4 CF Boxer 10 Chin 5-4-3 Rating Cruiser-End-0 Butterbean Record 24-1 (19) Weight 319 Height 5 11 ½ Reach 78 HP 8 Punches 28-24 Defense +6 CF Slugger 9 Chin 5-5-5 Rating Heavy-Prime-0 According to insiders the training camps of Rourke and Butterbean went very well. Being a winner take all $12 million dollar fight might have factored into the motivation of both fighters to give 100% in training. Mickey Rourke focused on his power and fully intends to knock Butterbean out prior to the toll of the bell ending round 4. Under the supervision of his long time trainer, Murray Sutherland, Butterbean had a routine training camp and placed a $50,000 bet on himself. The odds favor the sentimental fan favorite Mickey Rourke at 4-1. During the weigh-in of the Mascarita Sagrada vs. Jason Acuna bout, the unknown Californian taunted his well known opponent, laughing in his face throughout. Finally, something made Sagrada snap and he went after the mouthy Acuna. Others intervened and prevented the first ever Midget World Championship match from being settled at the weigh-in. Sagrada is a 7-1 favorite to defeat Acuna. Jason Acuna taunting Sagrada during their weigh-in. Both hit the scale at 95 pounds. |

A story about Mickey Rourke that ends in a circus? This just isn't believable any longer.

Sagrada vs. Acuna
Sagrada vs. Acuna There was plenty of posing and trash talk throughout Jimmy Lennon’s introduction of the fighters. The highlight being, when Sagrada dramatically removed his mask only to have Acuna snatch it out of his hands and wear it himself! Acuna kept the mask on when he came to ring center for Mills Lane’s final instructions. Mills demanded that he remove the mask, but not before Sagrada went after Acuna and attempted to take it off.
- The fight itself was far less entertaining, as neither had the boxing skills of a professional prize fighter. There was far more wrestling and trash talking then boxing, but the fans enjoyed the matchup for the most part. - Both put forth an honest effort and the crowd was able to recognize and appreciate this. However, truth be told, neither was even at the level of a decent amateur boxer, let alone a professional. Mills Lane was kept busy throughout separating the fighters. - By the midway point of round 3, the crowd began to boo the horrendously bad boxing skills on display. The booing continued throughout round 4, when there was little to differentiate between the two. Both held, wrestled, walked around the ring, and sometimes just stood in front of the other doing nothing other than maybe a little trash talking. - The final punches landed numbers slightly favored Sagrada 78-72. Ringside Expert Roy Paeth had the Los Angeles fighter, Acuna the winner 39-37. - The 3 official judges had it: 38-38, followed by two cards of 39-37 for Acuna. The decision was greeted by applause, mostly because the fight was over. Mickey Rourke vs. Butterbean Finally! Perhaps the most anticipated 4 round fight in history and certainly the highest grossing was ready to begin. Both fighters locked eyes the moment they entered the ring and continued until the fights conclusion. A hush fell over the crowd during Mills Lane’s final instructions and neither fighter broke eye contact. The difference in size was grossly apparent. Although the height appeared to be roughly the same, the width was different enough to fit two Rourke’s inside of one Butterbean!
ROUND 1: “El Marielito” started by moving and managed to avoid the initials attacks of Butterbean. The first landing punch didn’t take place until 52 seconds had elapsed, when a sharp Rourke jab snaked through the gloved defense of Butterbean. What appeared to be an intentional headbutt from Butterbean drew a warning from referee Mills Lane. Not many clean punches landed by either fighter. The ones that did, mostly belonged to Rourke. ROUND 2: Rourke opened up with his punches this round and found Buttebean a very easy target. Mickey Rourke was fighting with more aggressiveness than he had in previous outings and his genuine dislike for Butterbean was apparent. Butterbean landed less punches, but when he did land the force of his blows was enough to move Rourke around the ring. (Rourke 23-18)

ROUND 3: After 2 rounds Ringside Expert Jason Wood had it 19 all. Butterbean listened to the advice of his trainer Murray Sutherland (a former World Class fighter out of Scotland) and effectively nullified the Rourke attack, while landing his own left and rights. (Esch 18-0)

ROUND 4: Rourke continued to show respect for the power of Butterbean and maintained his strategy of boxing on the outside, using different angles to attack from. A clash of heads on the inside sent Rourke staggering into the ropes, where he appeared to be stunned. Butterbean saw his opportunity and immediately fired off a series of hard shots to the body and head, several of which landed. Mickey Rourke was now undisputedly hurt and began to cover up while Butterbean threw punch after punch at him. There was still 1:02 left remaining in the fight. Mickey did an excellent job of covering up and making Butterbean miss. Still, it was a weak way to finish what had been a fairly close fight.
Final punches landed numbers favored Butterbean 78-52, with most of them landing in the final round. Ringside Expert Jason Wood had it for Butterbean 39-37. Neither fighter was cut or bruised. The percentage of landed punches favored Butterbean 43% to 13%. Sugar Ray Leonard called the fight on Playboy PPV and had it a Draw at 38 all. Photo: Round card girl Winona Ryder. |

Decision: The 3 official judges, all from California had it: 39-37 Butterbean, 38-38 EVEN, and 38-38 EVEN! Jimmy Lennon Jr. announced the verdict, “This fight has been scored a DRAW!” The decision was greeted with a mixture of soft booing and polite applause.
Dm4 It was assumed by both fighters that the $12 Million Dollar winner take all payday would be split. However, the contract hastily signed by Mickey Rourke and not read, included fine print at the bottom that each fighter would be paid $75,000 if the fight ended in a draw! Rourke greeted this news with a shrug of his shoulders, further confirming that for him it was never about the money. He was however, clearly disappointed to have not handed out a beating to Butterbean. Post fight quotes: Matt Murphy – “This is why the fight should have been made for a minimum of at least 6 rounds. I hope Mickey decides to retire. He is 40 years old and the blows can take a greater toll at that point in a fighter’s life. After every fight, regardless of it’s a win, loss, or draw, we split a bottle of “Jameson Irish Whiskey” in celebration. We have a special case that we plan to open up and enjoy after his final fight. I’m hoping that was tonight, but his career will continue until HE is ready to say it’s over. Any future fights though will be as a cruiser. Heavyweight is too much and he can no longer realistically make light heavy.” Buttebean Manager – “We were robbed! Rourke had nothing left. He was out on his feet in round 4! We won at least 3 of the 4 rounds. This was an outrageous robbery! Come on, where is the justice! Hell yeah, Butterbean wants a rematch with this pretty boy! He also wants his $12 Million!” The “Jameson Irish Whiskey” Matt Murphy hopes to enjoy soon with Rourke as part of his retirement. |

More Undercard: Toby Tyler continued in his quest to secure a third meeting with Mickey Rourke by Ws8 over a fellow former Rourke opponent, Sean Gibbons. Tyler’s record advances to 10-9-2 (6).
The mud wrestling competition lasted about 5 minutes. Sharon Stone and Demi Moore were able to fairly easily toss the other 3 out of the ring, but not before. Stone and Moore wrestled for about 2 minutes one on one, until Stone forced Moore out of the ring. The crowd loved it and gave all 5 women a standing ovation. The votes for who won the T-Shirt contest between the superstar ring card girls have been added up, and in close vote Demi Moore edged out the other 4 contestants. The Big Kahuna; Wilmington, DE Mickey Rourke 11-2-4 (5) California vs. (8 rounds) Greg Cadiz 4-46-2 (3) Connecticut - This small venue, seating less than 800 patrons, was a surprise last minute recipient of a visit by Mickey Rourke. Two days before the boxing show was scheduled to take place the media was notified of Rourke fighting on the card. - The 48 hour notice was enough to boost ticket sales from about 300 to being completely sold out at 825. Like almost all Rourke fights, this card was untelevised. Known as a partying college area, Wilmington was bustling with boxing fans on November 19. - Fresh off his disappointing 4 round draw with Butterbean, this fight had the appearance on paper of being an easy fight for Rourke. In his last 5 fights Rourke has gone 1-2-2 (0). His opponents in those 5 fights have had a respectable combined record of 91-37-6 (42). - Well known as an “opponent”, Greg Cadiz was coerced out of his planned retirement for one last payday. - With the fight taking place on a Tuesday night and the media becoming aware of it on such short notice, press coverage was much smaller than has become customary at the last 7 or 8 Rourke fights. - Rourke weighed in at a solid 192, while Cadiz was the heaviest he’d ever been in his 53 fight career, 184. Cadiz once weighed in as low as 134 pounds! Of course that was in 1989 for his second professional fight. Of his 46 losses, often against solid competition, only 14 of them had been by TKO or KO. ROUND 1: Rourke came out at the bell throwing bombs and looking to end it very early. Cadiz quickly went into a holding mode, where he began applying the many tricks of the trade he’d learned in his 9 years of prize fighting to hit Rourke while holding him. A frustrated Rourke began using his own fouling tactics, but was proving to be no match for the 53 fight veteran. The fight was getting ugly quick, but was also competitive. (Cadiz 26-6) ROUND 2: Rourke was undeterred by his lack of success with roundhouses in the previous round and applied the same tactics in the second. A looping powerful right from Rourke landed on the temple of Cadiz and he fell to the floor for the count of 6. Cadiz recovered nicely and before the round had ended Rourke was bleeding from a cut within his right eyebrow. (Cadiz 26-12) ROUND 3: Chuck Bodak had Rourke’s cut closed up to start the round. Rourke was on a search and destroy mission to land a right hand like the one that had dropped Cadiz with in round 2. The crowd was on their feet cheering throughout, as the underdog Cadiz was giving at least as good as he got. Expecting to have a blowout win against a fighter with a horrible (4-46-2!) record, Rourke’s all out KO strategy was backfiring. His cut was reopened and the ringside doctor spent a good 20-30 seconds inspecting it before deciding that Rourke could continue. (Cadiz 33-24) ROUND 4: About ½ way into the round Rourke scored a flash knockdown of Cadiz when he got another looping right hand in. Cadiz pulled out all the tricks he knew and survived the round, but not before being warned by the referee for holding and hitting. (EVEN 12-12) ROUND 5: After 4 rounds Cadiz had out hit Rourke 97 to 54. Ringside Expert Mark Jones had Rourke ahead by 1 point, 38-37. Covering the fight for the “Boston Globe” the highly respected and regarded writer, Ron Borges, also had Rourke in front by 1 point, 38-37. Following the instructions of trainer Albert Davila, Rourke was on his toes and boxing in round 5. Both fighters were fouling the other at will and drawing some scattered booing from the crowd, who did not appreciate the fight turning into a WWF exhibit. (Cadiz 27-6) ROUND 6: Once again the cut outside Rourke’s right eye was bleeding badly enough for the referee to have the doctor take a close look at it. To the relief of Rourke and cheers of the crowd the fight was allowed to continue. However, Rourke was now having difficulty seeing with the torrent of blood flowing down the right side of his face. (Cadiz 18-12) ROUND 8: Entering the final round Ringside Expert Mark Jones had EVEN at 66-66, as did Ron Borges on his scorecard. Still looking for a KO victory, Rourke came out swinging from his heels in the final round. He was met at ring center though with an opponent looking to do the same to him! A solid right hand from Cadiz had the Rourke cut gushing blood once again. With 2:20 remaining in the fight the referee halted the action and to the shock, disgust, and dismay of Rourke…..stopped the fight!! The winner by TKO8, the fighter with a record of 4-46-2 (3)…GREG CADIZ!! [Amazing! Wow, shocker!] |

If there is one more rung on the career ladder below his current stage, I am sure that he will reach for it.
