I went back and forth with Pete but the bottom line is,the Phillies just didn't have many good players after 1984 or so,so to make the team as competitive as possible I went with the old guy.

He was for a while but got removed. I also wasn't sure I needed to since he was drafted by the Indians and played with them through the 1990 season. Technically he was traded on Dec 4, 1990; I suppose that is a grey area. Either way, those .270 OBPs are hard to swallow and probably shouldn't be protected.

Yeah, the list ended up being a little better than I thought it might when I started.

As a Pirates fan, and keeping in line with the emphasis on starting pitching, I would add the following:

John Tudor
Rick Reuschel
Pascual Perez

They would replace

Luis Salazar
Ken Oberkfell
Zane Smith (I like Tudor's numbers better)

Also, while George Hendrick had a decent career, he is despised in Pittsburgh for his lethargic play in his one partial season there ("Joggin George" is his nickname in the Burgh). I would replace him on the list with Lee Lacy. Just my two cents...

Thanks and done. I completely overlooked Perez and Tudor... and I'd agree that Oberkfell and Salazar where poor choices.

Would you be able to protect guys that played in 1980s, but didnt play for that club in the 80s? (AKA: Rose and Cincy?)

OF: George Bell, Lloyd Moseby, Jesse Barfield, Al Oliver, Mookie Wilson
P: Jimmy Key, John Candelaria, Doyle Alexander, Mike Flanagan, Tom Henke, Duane Ward, Mark Eichhorn, Al Leiter, David Wells, Phil Niekro, Bud Black, Mike Morgan

Pretty slim pickings, but some talent that got cups of coffee. Also, Dave Stieb would automatically be protected, since he was on Toronto in 1980, and didn't leave until 1992, correct?
I'm subbing Mike Morgan for Pat Borders. I didn't see a .288 OBP .375 SLG % catcher as very valuable. Bob Brenly was tempting too.

You can protect any player that played on that team from 1980-1990. Rose did play for Cinncy in the mid 1980s (when he broke the hit record). So he can be protected by Cinncy. He also could have been protected by Philidelphia, and Montreal.
