Philadelphia Phillies
St. Louis Cardinals

We are just about to enter free agency ahead of the 1932 season, so it's a great time to join the league. Heck, the Cardinals won their division last year.

We just wrapped up the 1932 season and are getting ready for the offseason.

We have two franchises available, and now would be a perfect time to grab one:

St. Louis Cardinals
Philadelphia Athletics

Both franchises are in good condition (heck, the Cards were a playoff team in 1932).

For those interested, this is going to be a very interesting year in the OBL. Josh Gibson, Indian Bob Johnson, Buck O'Neil, Lonny Frey, Schoolboy Rowe and Hilton Smith are all in the amateur draft this season. All of them have the ratings to be All Stars in their first season. Depending on health, Gibson and O'Neil both look to be future Hall of Famers - 20 years old, both already have an 8 rating for Contact, not to mention Gibson's 8 power rating in a league that has not yet seen a home run boom.

It takes us about two months to run a season, a few weeks to run an offseason. So we aren't too far away from the time when we'll be seeing DiMaggio and Mize and that generation of stars.

Edit to add - The Athletics have All Star catcher Mickey Cochrane (58.7 VORP this year), second baseman Dick Porter (24.3 after two seasons over 30), stud left fielder Joe Medwick who put up a 32.4 VORP in his age 20 season and has 9/9/5/4/9 ratings with a little room to grow into his talents still, as well as Earle Combs and Tom Hughes in the OF.

The Cardinals have Dizzy Dean and Carl Hubbell leading their rotation. Their infield is pretty weak, but their outfield of Chick Hafey, Goose Goslin and Mule Suttles bashed their way into the National League Championship Series.

Well, it's that time of the year again. Both the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs need owners. We just finished our 1933 season and are starting the Amateur Draft tomorrow night.

The Yankees have some good bats, but need to upgrade their pitching staff a little. They have the excellent Gus Mancuso behind the plate; he's a very strong defensive catcher and has had a VORP of at least 21.5 every year of the league. He's only 27 years old. Charlie Gelbert is a Gold Glove caliber shortstop and is also 27. Luke Appling is 26 and can play all over the infield - he's just entering his first arbitration year in 1934. Cool Papa Bell is a perennial MVP threat and has left field locked down. Chuck Klein provides the power out of right field, though he had a down year this past season. He just turned 29 so it's most likely a fluke and he should bounce back to being his former self.

Somehow despite inconsistent ownership, the Cubs still have an excellent pitching staff. I mentioned Hilton Smith in my last post about him entering the Draft last season. He pitched his way to a 2.93 ERA in 267 innings as a 21 year old. Bill Swift is rated 2/9/9 and is only 25. All four rotation members for the Cubs are 26 or younger. Their offense is weak, but they still have Mel Ott and his 9/7/8/9/9 ratings at age 24.

Both teams could use some help, but they both have their strong points. The Yanks have a core of position players to build around, the Cubs have the young starting pitching to make a push for the NL West.
