Personally, I think Co-Commissioners are a matter of personal taste.

They can be a great boon for a Commissioners, if they find someone who they work well with. It is very important that both of you not only get along, but not contradict one another within the league. (Speaking from experience as the second person) A second person can bring new energy and time to the league that one commissioner lacks. Personally, I could never bring myself to run an entire league by myself, but working with a great commissioner and doing things that I enjoy like fine tuning the Amateur Draft, continually revising rules and handling free agency matters are positive experiences for both myself and the league.

Being picky with owners can be helpful. The CDL, while entering its 12th season only has about 5 or 6 original owners left. A lot of the turnover was in the first two seasons, but just surviving the shakeout period of a league that pulled all of its initial owners from an earlier incarnation of this board and slowly adding new owners that are screened with a simple questionaire has allowed us to build an incredible owner base and a long waiting list.

Well I will throw my 2 cents in as well. The commish of the NBSL is John Le Blanc. Some of you might know him. He is in many of the established leagues like BoS and Glory Days and the NBSL.

What makes him a good commish is that he communicates with the league, he is on time with sims, or e-mails us if he is going to be out of town. We also have a good web guy, Eric Hartman.

I think it really takes a combination of things. I think a good message board is very important. If anything it will get owners coming to the site just to see what is new on the message board.

I think it is important to have a league hierarchy. John is the commish and Eric and I are league officers. Eric occasionally runs sims when John has computer problems.

I have also heard through the grapevine that once a league gets past its 3rd season it is usually in the clear. With that in mind mose of a leagues turnover is in its first 3 years. In the NBSL we had a rash of owner changes after our last season. We even had 5-7 different owners for the Seattle Mariners. We have Bruce Muench in there now, and I hope he sticks around.

I think we have about 8 original owners, which isnt great but it is ok.

So my list of things a league needs are as follows.

1. A good and committed commissioner
2. Owner participation
3. A good website
4. A good message board.

Everything else will fall into line.

I think what makes the NBSL unique is; we have a futures series, which I run. I love it and think it is a good thing especailly for the owners of relatively bad teams. They get a chance to see what their future stars can do. We also have many owner sites with team sites and prospect sites, and we have power rankings. So there is always something to look at between sims.

Well thats all my rambling. Are you gonna run the USBL or start teh 2nd coming of the XBL??

Also I dont think you need the all star owners like Scott Vibert or Steve Kuffrey. Although they dont hurt they are not needed. Some of our best owners arent well known around the OOTP community, yet some of them are. We would like to add all-stars but it isnt a pre requisite to get into the league.

Define an "all-star owner."

P.S. Now we know who wrote all of those exacting OOTP scouting reports!

Just want to say that I remember my CDL days with nothing but fondness, and I couldn't possibly ask for a better league to be in, although the young Maelstrom is very fun.

As a commish of a rather successful league (the NAHHBL ) the key is having owners who believe in the honestly and reliability of the commish and his abilty to listen to the needs of the league and make a decisive yet fair decision.

But the ABSOLUTE key to any successful league is the OWNERS.

Do I have a core of deticated owners in the NAHHBL, you bet your @ss I do. A little history here : The NAHHBL started out as the North American High Heat Baseball League (now the HH stands for Homerun Hitting) and after running 2 seasons of that and realizing just how limited the game was for online leagues, and how much BETTER OOTP 3 was for online leagues, I convinced 14 owners of High Heat to purchase OOTP3 with the sole intention of participating in my new league, having NEVER so much as been in an OOTP league. I promised solid, consistant gameplay, and I delivered. Of those 14 others who came over from High Heat to the new NAHHBL league, 8 are still active members of the NAHHBL for OOTP 4. In addition to those 8, another 8 of the 24 NAHHBL owners are the ORIGNINAL owners in the league... so in FIVE completed seasons (just started our sixth) we've replaced owners for a total of 8 teams... 2/3 of the league is still the original owners. Last season, the average submission rate for a team was 14.4 expimps out of a total of 18 sims. (we sim M-W-F 10 games per sim)

Seriously, as a commish I couldn't ask for a better group of owners. Every time one quits, I seem to replace them with a better owner than I had before. in all reality, IF your owner base is top-notch, then a monkey could do the commish work. The key is owners. But to get the owners, you gotta be relaible, trustworthy, and fair. And keep the political discussions to the OT forum!

Of course, now the NAHHBL is in a bit of 'discussion' as we're trying to figure out exactly how to run the expansion process (we started in 1980 but have long since went our own way from the MLB)... again, this is a situation where the commish has to make the decision, but CAN NOT ignore the voice of the owners. That's the key to ANY league, commish has to rule, but can't ignore the owners. Democratic principles don't work well in leagues, but can't be ignored.

That is all young grasshopper.

I have a couple more questions

How do you feel about a salary cap? I currently am prolly going to set a cap. I'm just tring to get a good amount.

How? do you find GMs. Is there like an applacation, questionaire, or something like that.

I might have more. Thanks!

Salary cap is personal preference. Over time it will have different effects on the league. I prefer a salary cap but I suggest looking at other online leagues closely to see what you think of different salary cap set ups.

Application, questionaire...you got it.

If you're good with web forms or have some help (some hosts have easy form set up help) you can make an actual webbased application where they enter information and hit "submit" and it goes to your email. That's a lot of work unless you know what you're doing.

Most people use text that can be easily cut and paste into an email. I tried both methods and found the cut and paste method to be better. Easier to read...less maintenance...
