PENNANT RACES:
For the 2nd year in the Washington League, one of it's division needed a playoff game, this time in the East as Idaho Falls beat Orem in a 1 game playoff to win their 2nd straight division title. But again, just like last year, ORem wasn't that disappointed as they already locked up the wildcard as both Idaho Falls and Orem had 2 of the best records in the WL.
In the Central, the 3rd different team won the pennant in the 3 years of existance of the IRL, this time, it was the Valley Cats. They clinched with 5 games to go and coasted to the finish dropping 4 of their final 5, making it look closer than it really was.
Out West, Brooklyn coasted the 2nd half, sustaining their 9 game lead at the break after the All-star game and allowing the Cyclones to rest some it's starters while easily winning their 1st division crown.

Lake County Captains 42 58 .420 20.0 43-57
PENNANT RACES:
The closest race in the Lincoln occured in the East as Auburn made a fierce 2nd half charge at State College, outplaying them 31-21 to 25-27 after the break, but the Spikes held on, clinching on the last day of the season with a win over Williamsport, completing their worst to first season, from last in the East this year, to Division Champs.
The Scappers duplicated State College in a worst to first result, however Mahoning Valley did it a little easier as the only division winner with a double digit lead over the 2nd place team, thanks to a phenominal 38-14 2nd half record. Lowell joined Mahoning Valley in their 1st playoff berth winning the LL Wildcard.
In the West, Asheville made it 2 straight playoff appearances, this time not as the wildcard though, as after 2 consecutive 2nd place finishes in the West, they finally prevailed with the division pennant, holding off last year division champs, West Virginia.

1902 PLAYOFFS
WILDCARD:
In the Washington League, Orem got some revenge over Idaho Falls, as they might have lost the 1 game playoff for division pennant, but the wildcard Owlz swept their 3 game series, knocking out the Chukers. In the other WL series, the heavily favorite Cyclones fell to Tri City in a 3 game series, as the Valley Cats won the 3rd and deciding game on the road in Brooklyn.
The LL saw both series go the 3 game distance, with Mahoning Valley and Asheville kncking off Lowell and State College respectively, both in very close series in which the deciding game 3's were 1 run affairs.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
Tri City might have had the worst record of all the Washington League playoff teams, but don't tell them that. Beating Orem 3 games to 1 to earn their first berth to the IRL World Series, the Valley Cats did it with hitting. While only having 1 player all year with more than 10 homeruns, Tri City ate their wheaties and hit a combined 7 HRs in the 4 games as a team, with 3b Thomas Pierce leading the way, going deep twice and driving in 8 runs to earn MVP honors.
The LLCS featured the 2 teams with the best record's in the IRL this year, and in the end, Asheville came back from a 2-1 deficit to knock off Mahoning Valley in 5. The Scappers started 20 game winner Dave Stewart in the series finale, but the Tourists didn't seem to notice as they battered Stewart for 7 runs in 4 innings of work, winning game 5 impressively 9-3. SP Steve Rose won series MVP honors going 1-0 for Asheville in 2 gs, pitching a gem no decision in game 1 and a CG in game 5.

ROOKIE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
"ASHEVILLE COMPLETES MAGICAL SEASON, WINS 1ST IRL TITLE"
Asheville was always an almost-won team, finishing 2nd 2 years in a row in their division, but this year the Tourists put it all together winning the 1902 IRL World Series, beating Tri City 4 games to 3 in a 7 game thriller. The Tourists jumped out to a commanding 3-1 lead, and prematurely celebrated as the Valley Cats weren't ready to die just yet. Steve Rose did it again for Asheville in the series clincher, winning Game 7 to improve his record in this post-season to 4-0 in 5 games started with a stellar 1.82 era. He won World Series MVP to match his LCS MVP trophy, making him the 1st ever winner of both prestigeous awards.

AWARD WINNERS

WASHINGTON LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - CF Joe Ainsa (Boise Hawks)
- 23yo / USA - IRL MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 95 g - 344 ab - .332 avg - 11 hr - 60 rbi - 65 r - 29 sb - .955 ops
- Career Stats: 95 g - 344 ab - .332 avg - 11 hr - 60 rbi - 65 r - 29 sb - .955 ops (minors/1 yr)
117 g - 402 ab - .332 avg - 12 hr - 70 rbi - 73 r - 32 sb - .923 ops (career/1 yr)
- Overview: Ainsa spent the entire year with Boise and then was called up to Boston when the IRL season finished and the WL MVP has done very well at the ML level probably ending his rookie league career. But in his 1 year in the league he led all hitters in Runs scored & Vorp and led the WL in Batting avg, hits & OPS and he is yet another in a long line of Boston young studs who have been honored with a ROY award at some level.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Wade Sipes (Brooklyn Cyclones)
- 28yo / USA - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 22 g - 22 gs - 16-3 rec - 0 sv - 1.75 era - 180.1 ip - 24 bb - 154 k - 0.75 whip

26 g - 26 gs - 17-4 rec - 0 sv - 2.08 era - 211.2 ip - 37 bb - 179 k - 0.84 whip (career/1 yr)
- Overview: The 2nd rd draft pick by Detroit started his baseball career in amazing fashion, going 12-0 in his 1st 12 IRL decision, and finishing the season with the WL lead in wins, IP, whip, Strikeouts and K/BB ratio in a truly dominating season. He has since been called up to Detroit and is 1-1 in 4 career MLB starts with a decent 4.02 era. He figures to be in the Tigers rotation next year, so like Ainsa, his IRL career is probably over.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:

LINCOLN LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - CF Ambrosio Coral (Hagerstown Suns)
- 28yo / USA - IRL MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 77 g - 298 ab - .372 avg - 6 hr - 31 rbi - 53 r - 15 sb - .959 ops

134 g - 474 ab - .346 avg - 8 hr - 47 rbi - 74 r - 22 sb - .883 ops (career/1 yr)
- Overview: The 1st pick in the 5th rd by San Diego, Coral posted the highest season Batting Avg in the history of the IRL and has proven he is more than just a minor league star, as he has hit .301 in the majors with the Padres in 176 ab after his callup. The easy choice for MVP thanks to his record breaking season, along with Avg, Coral was in the top 5 in the LL in OPS, Vorp & Hits and looks like his days in the IRL are over as he has proven he can hit in the bigs.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Dave Stewart (Mahoning Valley Scappers)
- 25yo / USA - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 27 g - 27 gs - 20-6 rec - 0 sv - 3.50 era - 208.0 ip - 96 bb - 149 k - 1.25 whip

- Overview: Stewart became the 2nd ever 20-game winner in the IRL this season, leading the league in wins despite otherwise unimpressive stats. He has never been much of a pitcher before this season, as in 2 previous years with the Scappers he posted a 12-24 career record. But every once in awhile, a pitcher has a magical season, and Stewart definitely had that this year and was rewarded with the Cy Young trophy.

MWL - 1902 Season Preview

1902 MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 10/1/02)

LEAGUE PREVIEW

Code:
1901 STANDINGS

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Obregon Orangemen 39 29 .574 - 35-33
Mexicali Leopards 37 31 .544 2.0 35-33
Mochis Wranglers 36 32 .529 3.0 37-31
Culiacan Moths 33 35 .485 6.0 32-36
Navojoa Chameleons 33 35 .485 6.0 34-34
Hermosillo Victorians 32 36 .471 7.0 36-32
Mazatlan Black Hawks 32 36 .471 7.0 37-31
Guasave Hippies 30 38 .441 9.0 28-40
Team To Watch: Mochis Wranglers
- The Wranglers were the odd man out last year, finishing a game behind Mexicali in 3rd place, and thus, no post-season. But Mochis made some big moves in the off-season, adding 2 stud SPs to an already solid staff featuring "Big" Bill Dineen & Kumanosuke Ohayashi. Chan Manzanaras (from the MLB) & Pancho Cardenas (from the ***) were signed thru free agency, and give them 4 solid starters. Their offense also has a new piece in RF Koto Inokuma, acquired via trade with Seibu in the ***, Inokuma has averaged 35 HR a year in the more difficult Japanese league, and figures to come in and immediately be the best power hitter in Japan.

Pitcher To Watch: SP "Smiling" Al Orth (MEX)
- Orth had a very productive 1st season in Mexico, ranking 2nd in wins and 3rd in ERA with a 9-5 record, 2.26 era. However the 31yo was disappointed losing in the playoffs and wants to atone for it this year with a better season for himself, and a championship ring for his team. 2/19/16 ratings make him one of the best in the MWL, and with 109 career victories, he ranks 1st all time in the Mexican league.

Hitter To Watch: SS Jimmy Sheckard (HER)
- The reigning MWL MVP is again the best hitter in the league ratings wise, with the only 20/20 in contact, 8/20 in power ranking him above avg and 18/20 eye, again tops. Add in his 20/20 speed and a gold glove at SS and there's not much he can't do. He is a free agent after this season, and rumor has it there is going to be a bidding war between the MLB clubs for his services, but expect his likely last season in Mexico to be as productive as his first (.391, 8 hr, 29 rbi, 48 runs, 34 sb)

Rookie To Watch: CL Jeff "Legend" Brear (HER)
- The 2nd pick in the draft by Hermosillo, the 21yo Brear has all the talent to be the best closer in the MWL. Potential ratings of 9/8/9 with a 97mph fastball and you can see why he is nicknamed Legend. Expect Brear to open the season in a mop-up role with the Victorians, but that is just until the rookie gets his feet wet, and there is no doubt he will be their closer within a year or 2.

PENNANT RACES:
The greatest sports franchise ever, the Evil Empire, the NY Yankees made the first playoff appearance in my baseball universe thanks to a ridiculous 2nd half record of 63-28, overcoming an 8 game/4th place All-star break record to running away with the division by an easy 7 games. Baltimore, who was the midway point East leader also made the playoffs as the AL Wildcard team, but simply had no chance in holding on for the pennant with how the Yanks played the 2nd half. Of note is how fast the mighty have fallen, as last year World Series Champs, the Toronto Blue Jays, finished a distant 27 games out of first and with the 3rd worst record in all of the AL.
Detroit's 2 yr reign over the central came to an end, as the Twins walked away with the division title, clinching the division thanks to a 9-1 record over their final 10 games. The Twinkies and Tigers were tied on 9/17, but over the final 8 days of the season, Minnesota didn't lose and the Tigers played only .500, thus the 4 game gap.
Texas made it 2 in a row out West and is this year's only returning playoff team from 1901 as they pulled away from the injury riddled Angels after the break. Anaheim was only 2 games back at the All-star game, but a slew of injuries, including their top pitcher and hitter missing significat time, made the Rangers' job an easy one as Texas posted the best record in the AL and won their division by the largest margin making it 2 straight division titles.

PENNANT RACES:
In the closest race in the majors featuring 3 of the top teams in the league, the Braves' 2 yr run as division champs came to an end. Last year it was the Marlins as the odd team out, despite having the 3rd best record in baseball and the Mets as the wildcard team. Both teams were able to jump the Braves as NY won it's first pennant and Florida made it's 1st post-season as the wildcard. It all came down to the final 2 games of the year. The Mets beat the lowly Phillies twice and Florida split the final 2 with Washington, but the Braves could only do the same with San Francisco, and ran out of time to catch either NY or Florida.
In the Central and West, Houston and LA made sure there would be no 3-straight division champs, as the held off the reigning pennant winners Cincinnati & Arizona respectively in earning their 1st division crowns. Both teams clinched late in the year as the each won their final 3 of the season and the Reds and D-Backs went 1-2. Houston will be making their 1st playoff appearance while the Dodgers sniffed the post-season in 1900 as the NL Wildcard and are back after a 1 year hiatus.

1902 PLAYOFFS
WILDCARD:
The Yankees continued their hot streak in the wildcard series, sweeping away Minnesota 3 straight. In the other AL series, Baltimore took the favorite Rangers to 5 games before ultimately falling thanks to a gem in game 5 by 25 game winner Ed Hughs.
Both series in the NL went 4 games as Florida knocked off the Mets 3-1 and Houston did the same to the Dodgers. Neither series had much excitement though as Florida and LA both took 2-0 series leads before ultimately clinching in the 4th game.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
Texas finally slowed down NY, but only enough to take them to the 7 game limit. In the end, the Yankees made it 3 straight AL East representatives in the World Series, following Boston in 1900 and Champion Toronto in 1901. Alex "Dooney" Hardy & Chale Otero shared ALCS MVP honors, both going 2-0 in the series in 2 gs. Hardy won the clinching game 7 with a complete game shutout while Strikeout king Otero struck out a ridiculous 24 Rangers in his 15.1 ip including 15 in game 2.
Florida also needed 7 games to clinch the LCS, overcoming a 3-2 series decificit to beat Houston. Xavier Delaluz was named NLCS MVP with a series for the record books. Going 15 for 33 in the series, he nearly hit .500 with 4 bombs and drove in 15 in the 7 game series.

WORLD SERIES:
"THE EVIL EMPIRE IS BORN"
NY made it 2 straight for the AL East with a dominating 4-2 series win over the over-matched Marlins. NY dropped the 1st game thanks to a shutout by Ezequiel Cano, but then their bats came alive. Winning 4 of the next 5 games, the Yankees scored 37 runs the rest of the series, including winning the deciding game 6, 10-2. Jack Flynt was award the World Series MVP as he accounted for 22 of the Yankees 37 runs scored with 12 RBI and 10 runs scored.

AWARD WINNERS

AMERICAN LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - RF Ron Cronshaw (Tampa Bay Devil Rays)
- 28yo / USA - MLB MVP Awards: 2
- Season Stats: 135 g - 460 ab - .387 avg - 35 hr - 117 rbi - 116 r - 6 sb - 1.241 ops
- Career Stats: 459 g - 1642 ab - .335 avg - 115 hr - 354 rbi - 349 r - 13 sb - 1.093 ops (majors/3 yrs)
- Overview: The Tampa Bay superstar became the 1st 2-time winner of a major award, winning his 2nd consecutive AL MVP. While his numbers weren't as prolific as last season, he missed a few weeks due to injury, and improved his batting avg by a full .033 pts. He led all MLB hitters in Avg, OPS & Vorp and was 4th in the AL in HR while nearly getting his Devil Rays into the playoffs for the 1st time.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Ed "Meter Man" Hughs (Texas Rangers)
- 30yo / USA - MLB CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 25-7 rec - 0 sv - 2.10 era - 286.2 ip - 67 bb - 277 k - 1.00 whip
- Career Stats: 105 g - 105 gs - 62-25 rec - 0 sv - 3.13 era - 811.1 ip - 193 bb - 746 k - 1.16 whip (majors/3 yrs)
- Overview: Hughs had the greatest season by a pitcher in the short 3 yr history of the MLB this season and was the easy choice for AL Cy Young winner. Tying the record for most wins ever in a season, The Meter Man also led all MLB pitchers in ERA, Whip & Vorp, the 1st time that feat has been accomplished. He was also the AL leader in IP, shutouts, Opp Avg and 2nd in K's going down in history as the best season ever by a pitcher...so far.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD - LF Patsy Dougherty (Boston Red Sox)
- 26yo / USA - MLB ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 160 g - 661 ab - .340 avg - 0 hr - 62 rbi - 107 r - 60 sb - .820 ops
- Career Stats: 160 g - 661 ab - .340 avg - 0 hr - 62 rbi - 107 r - 60 sb - .820 ops (majors/1 yr)
- Overview: Dougherty made it 3 straight AL Rookie of the Year awards for the Red Sox, further proving that Boston is indeed the best young team in the league. Leading all MLB rookies in virtually every offensive statistic, the 22nd overall pick in last year's draft is already considered one of the top leadoff men in the game. His numbers were fantastic even when compared to established players, ranking 6th in the AL in avg and 2nd in both hits and SB.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:
P - Bob Lawson (Cleveland Indians) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1
C - Teodor Abascal (Texas Rangers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2
1b - Ricardo Olveada (Kansas City Royals) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2
2B - Mark Larsen (Cleveland Indians) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1
3B - John Shaftoe (Los Angeles (A) Angels) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2

RF - Socks Seybold (Seattle Mariners) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2

NATIONAL LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - LF Xavier Delaluz (Florida Marlins)
- 25yo / El Salvador - MLB MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 155 g - 587 ab - .359 avg - 37 hr - 115 rbi - 125 r - 11 sb - 1.082 ops
- Career Stats: 465 g - 1770 ab - .328 avg - 86 hr - 289 rbi - 348 r - 39 sb - .979 ops (majors/3 yrs)
- Overview: Delaluz signed a FA deal in the off-season with Florida, coming over from Cincy, and not coincidentally, the Marlins made it to their 1st post-season while Cincy's 2 year reign as NL Central champs came to an end. While Delaluz's numbers are by no means mind-shattering, he had a great all-around year leading the NL in OPS & Vorp and ranking in the top 5 in Avg, HR & runs. His showing in the NLCS might have cinched the award, even though post-season performances aren't supposed to count, in this case it probably did factor in, and at only 25yo and the leader of the NL Champs, the future is bright for Xavier.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Ezequiel Cano (Florida Marlins)
- 27yo / Guatemala - MLB CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 18-10 rec - 0 sv - 2.36 era - 248.0 ip - 94 bb - 291 k - 1.13 whip
- Career Stats: 104 g - 104 gs - 50-32 rec - 0 sv - 3.03 era - 730.0 ip - 314 bb - 792 k - 1.28 whip (majors/3 yrs)
- Overview: The Marlins other young, non-American born star made it a clean sweep as he walked away with Cy Young honors in what was probably the closest vote in the 3 yr history of the MLB. Cano led the NL in ERA, Borp & Strikeouts, despite his record not being nearly as impressive as some of the other candidates. But being the ace on the NL Champs again probably played a role in the voting and he walked away with his 1st Cy Young award in what was easily, the best year of his impressive career so far.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD - SP Frank "Deacon" Morrissey (Colorado Rockies)
- 26yo / USA - MLB ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 18-10 rec - 0 sv - 2.80 era - 273.1 ip - 56 bb - 97 k - 1.23 whip
- Career Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 18-10 rec - 0 sv - 2.80 era - 273.1 ip - 56 bb - 97 k - 1.23 whip (majors/1 yr)
- Overview: Not mincing words here, but Deacon should not have won this award. He should have been 4th behind Wid Conroy (Cards), Stan Yerkes (Padres) & Bob Rhoads (Marlins). Conroy led all NL rookies in every offensive category and both Yerkes & Rhoads had better pitching stats by all accounts. The major difference was Vorp (which I'm still not sure how to calculate) in which Morrissey had a commanding lead over the other 3. Nevertheless, the 7th overall pick in the 1901 draft had a great rookie season and won the NL ROY award, however unfair.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:
P - Happy Townsend (Houston Astros) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1
C - Roger "The Duke of Tralee" Bresnahan (Chicago (N) Cubs) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1
1b - Mel "Cotton" von Lenski (Cincinnati Reds) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1
2B - Mitsuhide Nishi (Philadelphia Phillies) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2
3B - Otto "Oom Paul" Krueger (Los Angeles (N) Dodgers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1
SS - Carlos Ronero (Colorado Rockies) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2
LF - Bill Koch (New York (N) Mets) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2
CF - Bill Ranby (San Francisco Giants) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1
RF - Neill Dugger (Houston Astros) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2

1902 MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE LEAGUE MID-SEASON REPORT

Mexicali Leopards 10 23 .303 12.0 9-24

Team Spotlight: Obregon Orangemen
- The defending MWL Champs look to be at it again as the defend their crown with the best 1st half record. They are doing it on the mound this year, as their offense just hasn't been good, ranking 6th in Avg and 5th in runs scored. But the pitching of the Orangemen has been stellar. The only team with an ERA under 3.00, they also lead the league in Opp Avg, HR allowed and strikeouts and have been led by the 1-2 punch of Joe Furnaguerra & Severo Cruz both with 5 wins, ranking them 2nd in the league.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Vic Willis (CUL)
- Willis has been fantastic the 1st half of the season. He is the only pitcher with 6 wins in the league, and has won 37.5% of the Moths total wins this year. Along with the 6-1 record, he has a 2.17 era (6th), 1.05 whip (6th) and leads the MWL in both IP and HR allowed, the only pitcher in the league not to give one up yet this season. He needs help from the other starters on Culican, as no teammate has more than 2 wins. But if he keeps this up, Willis is on pace to break the wins record while winning his 1st Cy Young.

Hitter Spotlight: RF Koto Inokuma (MOC)
- Acquired via trade with Seibu in Japan, Inokuma has made an immediate impact for the Mochis and is a power hitter the Mexican League has never seen before. The record for HR in a season in the MWL is 17, with 42 games left, Koto already has 10...in 23 games, and is on pace to shatter the previous record. If he didn't suffer an injury which he is due back from any day, he might already be at 17. He is the only player in the league with double digits in HR and also leads the league in Vorp. He would lead the league with his .400 avg, but doesn't have enough AB to qualify. As long as he can stay healthy, he should easily walk away with MVP honors and the Wranglers could easily make a run at the playoffs with him anchoring their lineup.

Rookie Spotlight: CL John Deringer (CUL)
- Deringer spent the past 2 seasons in Cincinnati's organization as a RP for their minor league team Everett. Released in the off-season, he signed a 1 yr deal with Culican and has found a home as their closer. With 9 saves in 10 chances and a 2.35 era, Deringer is the front runner for ROY, leading all Rookie pitchers in saves and Vorp and ranking tied for 4th in saves in all of the MWL. At 23yo, he is looking to sign an extension and remain in Mexico as one of the top closers.

PENNANT RACES:
There really was no surprise or suspense in Mexico this year, as the 2 teams at top at the mid-way point easily walked away with playoff honors. Both Obregon & Mazatlan clinched early and expanded their leads in the 2nd half. The only semi-suspense would be which team would win home field for the Championship series, but even that was decided early as Obregon finished a full 5 games better than the Black Hawks.

1902 PLAYOFFS
MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
"ORANGEMEN GET EMBARASSED IN TRY FOR REPEAT"
The Orangemen were the defending champs, had home field and were generally consider the better of the 2 teams in the MWL Championship, but don't tell the Black Hawks that. Mazatlan swept away Obregon 3 games to 0 in a series that no game was even close. Winning by scores of 6-2, 5-1, and 6-3, the Black Hawks ended the repeat bid by the Orangemen and won their first Championship in their first post-season trip. Team leader, and one of the top hitter in all of the MWL, 1b Diego Huincho was named series MVP, hitting 5 for 12 in the series with 1 hr and 5 rbi.

While Sheckard's numbers were down from last year, most notably in the RBI column, he still led the league in Avg, Vorp and SB while again flirting with .400 but coming up just short for the 2nd season. As he accepted his award he made a shocking announcement, stating that he and Hermosillo have agreed on a 3 yr contract extension. Most thought the 2-time MVP would be headed to the states and the MLB, but with his extension, he will be back to try to make it a 3rd straight MVP, and even more hopefully, get his team into the playoffs.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Salvador Cortez (Obregon Orangemen)
- 35yo / USA - MWL CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 15 g - 15 gs - 9-2 rec - 0 sv - 1.84 era - 102.2 ip - 31 bb - 63 k - 1.01 whip
- Career Stats: 30 g - 30 gs - 17-6 rec - 0 sv - 2.08 era - 212.1 ip - 52 bb - 134 k - 0.98 whip (winter/2 yrs)
56 g - 56 gs - 26-13 rec - 0 sv - 3.62 era - 351.0 ip - 114 bb - 212 k - 1.24 whip (career/3 yrs)
- Overview: The former SP for the Atlanta Braves in the MLB, Cortez realized his career was coming to an end and signed with Obregon in Mexico following the 1900 season. Since then he has gone 17-6 with nearly a 2 era and has been one of the league's top pitchers, winning the Cy Young this year. He led the MWL in ERA while ranking 2nd in wins & Vorp and in the top 5 in Opp Avg. He was 1 of 4 Orangemen pitchers on the wins leaderboard, so he might not have really deserved this award as much as their entire staff, but as the best pitcher on the team, he was awarded the trophy.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - SP Chale Bottach (Guasave Hippies)
- 21yo / USA - MWL ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 11 g - 11 gs - 5-4 rec - 0 sv - 3.86 era - 81.2 ip - 29 bb - 47 k - 1.30 whip
- Career Stats: 13 g - 13 gs - 5-5 rec - 0 sv - 4.12 era - 91.2 ip - 32 bb - 52 k - 1.32 whip (winter/2 yrs)
55 g - 44 gs - 25-11 rec - 0 sv - 3.03 era - 335.1 ip - 100 bb - 186 k - 1.12 whip (career/3 yrs)
- Overview: Once considered one of the top pitchers on the Brooklyn Cyclones in the IRL, going 12-4 in 1900, Bottach suffered a serious injury early in the 1901 season and spent the year bouncing around the league before being shut down for the year with a Torn Rotator Cuff after signing on with the Hippies. He came back strong this year, and was the only rookie pitcher to crack any team's regular rotation and thus led the league in virtually all rookie SP stats. With there also being no real good rookie hitters, Chale was awarded the ROY in his comeback season. Now fully healthy, he figures to be a solid #4-5 SP in Mexico and hopes maybe one day, he will get another shot in the states.

*** - 1903 Season Preview

1903 [league redacted] LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 2/22/03)

LEAGUE PREVIEW

Code:
1902 STANDINGS
Pacific League

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Chiba Lotte Marines 87 59 .596 - 88-58 - Champs
Nippon Fighters 79 67 .541 8.0 76-70
Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas 76 70 .521 11.0 80-66
Fukuoka Daiei Hawks 74 72 .507 13.0 71-75
Seibu Lions 64 82 .438 23.0 66-80
Orix Buffaloes 58 88 .397 29.0 59-87
Team To Watch: Chiba Lotte Marines
- The reigning *** Champion Marines have consistently been in the playoff picture, finishing 2 games out in 1900 and winning the Pacific the last 2 seasons, so it's hard to pick against them. While their off-season consisted of the draft and no other moves, they return intact, the team that won it all last season. The team with the best offense in the league last year will be led again by reigning PL MVP, 3b John McGraw, coming off a .340/58 sb/113 run season. Joining him in the lineup is the powerful RF Takamasa Kawaii (32 hr/131 rbi), former ROY & 3-time All Star CF Morihiro Katagiri (.316/16/86/89/43) and solid hitting/2-time Gold Glove C Ed McFarland (.288/90 runs). Anchoring a decent, but not spectacular staff is Nig Cuppy, coming off a career best 19-8 season.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Vittorio Patino (TOH)
- Patino came over from the Atlanta Braves in the MLB, signing a 3 yr/29 m contract with the Ninjas. All he did in the MLB was post 3-consecutive 20 win seasons and has career numbers of 61-28, 3.38 era and 640 k in 103 career starts...in the tougher MLB in the USA. At 26yo, Vittorio will be in his prime years for the duration of this contract and should dominate vs. the lesser talented Japanese league hitters.

Hitter To Watch: LF Dave Vodden (FUK)
- The 1900 *** Champs Fukuoka won that season thanks to riding the best hitter in the league, Gary Wilson, to the title. Well, they have the best hitter in the league again in Vodden, acquired only a few days ago in a trade with Toronto in the MLB for All-star 2b Ramon Rosano. Vodden spent 3 seasons in Kansas City before signing with Toronto prior to the deal, and while he never made an AL All-star team, he did win 1 Batter of the Month and 4 Player of the Week awards. His career averages of .243, 40 hr, 108 rbi, 93 runs in the MLB are impressive, and in Japan would blow away the league as he is easily the best power hitter in the *** with an 18/20 in HR power. All his numbers should improve as he is already a candidate for the MVP and could very well get the the Daiei Hawks back to the Championship

Rookie To Watch: RF Saionji Tsuchiya (SEI)
- The 4th overall pick in the first "hitter loaded" draft is easily the best power hitting prospect in the cl***. With potential ratings of 13/20 in both gap & hr power, Tsuchiya projects to a league leader in both HR & RBI down the road. While his contact and eye are both not great, he is the pure slugger type who also has some speed (11/20) and a decent glove in RF (13/20). At only 21, he is almost ready to be on the Lions active roster, but will start off the season on the reserves, however expect him to get quite a few AB, especially if the Lions fall out of it quickly as the did last season.

Central League

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Yomiuri Giants 84 62 .575 - 80-66
Hiroshima Toyo Carp 81 65 .555 3.0 87-59
Yakult Swallows 80 66 .548 4.0 78-68
Chunichi Dragon 72 74 .493 12.0 76-70
Yokohama Bay Stars 63 83 .432 21.0 62-84
Hanshin Tiger 58 88 .397 26.0 56-90
Team To Watch: Yomiuri Giants
- The 2-time CL champs lost to rival Chiba Lotte in the Championship after beating them in 1901 and Yomiuri wants a rematch/rubber match this year. Always one of the most active teams in the off-season, this year was no different, as the Giants added SP Alejandro Mortiz (15-10, 2.66 era) from Yakult & CF Patrice Fortier (.311/22/101) from St. Louis(MLB) via free agency to their already talented team, while not losing any key players. Mortiz joins an already loaded pitching staff featuring former Cy Young Masamune Mifune (12-6 in injury plagued season), Kiichi Iwahara (15-9) & 3-time All-star closer Shigeko Nishiyama (avg 37 saves per year). However Yomiuri is known for their hitting, and sliding Fortier into the #4 hole around former MVP Shohei Heida (.247/28/112) and all-star C Frank Chance (.336/99 runs/52 sb) give them one of the best heart of the lineups in Japan which should provide their pitching with plenty of run support again.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Rube Waddell (YOK)
- At the age of 26, Waddell finally put it all together last season for Yokohama, and while finishing under .500 at 9-10, he was one of the most dominate pitchers in the CL with a 3.25 era and 240 k in 207.2 ip while making his 1st All-star team. His ratings are now fully maxed at 12/20/13 and expect Waddell to improve on last seasons record while racking up plenty of K's and a low ERA as he has now taken over the #1 slot for the Bay Stars.

Hitter To Watch: SS Ed "Big Ed" Delahanty (HAN)
- The reigning 2-time CL MVP surprising re-signed with the lowly Hanshin Tiger in the off-season and is the favorite to win the award again for an unprecented 3rd straight season. He has led all of the *** in Vorp the past 2 seasons and won his first batting title last season with numbers of .359/4 hr/50 rbi/83 runs/31 sb. Hanshin again looks like one of the worst teams in Japan, adding only a SP in the off-season to a team that has the worst 3-yr record in the history of the league. However year in and year out, Delahanty is the league's best hitter and nothing looks to change this season, either with his numbers or the teams.

Rookie To Watch: C Shuko Komori (HAN)
- The #1 overall pick is neither the best hitting or defensive prospect in the draft cl***, however he does project to be a solid .300 hitter with some pop and an above avg glove. But Hanshin is so bad, that they are bucking the trend and immediately sliding Komori into their everyday lineup as their starting catcher, even though his current ratings are no where near his projected ones. The 21yo will have to learn on the fly and rumor has it that the Hanshin manager has him rooming with Ed Delahanty in hopes he will help the promising rookie develop quicker. He is definitely the rookie to watch in the Central League as he is the 1st pick in the draft, and the only 1st rounder who steps in as a starter for his team.

American League Eastern Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
New York (A) Yankees 97 65 .599 - 95-67 - Champs
Baltimore Orioles 90 72 .556 7.0 93-69

Boston Red Sox 79 83 .488 18.0 78-84
Toronto Blue Jays 70 92 .432 27.0 70-92
Team To Watch: NY Yankees
- The reigning World Series champs finished the season on an incredible hot streak that ran thru the post-season and continued in the off-season and they made some big time acquisitions. The major addition came in the form of RF Neill Dugger from Houston. The 2-time gold glover not only provides the Yanks with excellent defense, but a solid bat in the #6 hole with career averages of .287/32 hr/126 rbi/100 runs. He joins one of the AL's best lineup featuring career .344 hitter, C Bill Kile, 3-time All-star DH Jack Flynt (.313/20 hr/91 rbi) and power hitting 1b Oliverio Vargas (38 hr/133 rbi). But the Yankees won last year thanks to the AL's best pitching staff and they return completely intact. Alex Hardy, Chale Otero, Mal Eason & Duardo Lluy combined to go 71-44 last year, and this year are joined by #8 overall pick, SP Jose Laurel, as the #5 starter. Emery Dendy is back as the team's closer and is coming off a 41 save season that ranked 2nd in the AL.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Lee MacHarold (BAL)
- MacHarold finally put it all together last year and if not for a late season injury, he might have led the Orioles to the AL East title. Going 16-8 with a 2.69 era & 268 k in just 31 starts, he posted career highs across the board. At 26yo, you can expect him to improve them again this year with maxed ratings of 18/19/16, there is not much that MacHarold doesn't excel in, and duplicating last year's All-star season is almost a foregone conclusion.

Hitter To Watch: RF Ron Cronshaw (TB)
- It would be tough to select anyone but the 2-time reigning AL MVP. A couple of minor injuries caused Cronshaw to dip in the HR/RBI/Run department, but his avg skyrocketed and he won the batting crown as well as the MVP. .387 avg with 35 hr, 117 rbi, 116 runs and in only 135 games. Imagine if he stayed healthy all season long. Still only 28yo, and in his prime, Cronshaw is a free agent after this season and Tampa would be smart to lock him up early as he might but up huge "contract" numbers and be in a bidding war in the off-season which will probably net the biggest contract in baseball history.

Rookie To Watch: SP Jose Laurel (NYY)
- The 1st rd, #8 overall pick of the defending champs earned the amazing task of cracking their starting rotation right from spring training, as Laurel will open the year as NY's #5 starter. The 23yo out of New Mexico has great ratings of 7/16/15 that are already maxed out, so you can see why he skipped the minors. With a 17/20 in endurance he is also an innings eater late in the rotation, and with the luxary of joining the AL's best staff, he should have a non-stressful transition to the majors.

American League Central Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Minnesota Twins 87 75 .537 - 87-75
Detroit Tigers 83 79 .512 4.0 92-70
Chicago (A) White Sox 79 83 .488 8.0 79-83
Cleveland Indians 79 83 .488 8.0 73-89
Kansas City Royals 69 93 .426 18.0 72-90
Team To Watch: Minnesota Twins
- Coming off their first Central division crown, the Twins looks like the team to beat again in the tight 5-team division. The Twins were quiet during free agency, but did make 2 trades. Both teams involved minor leagues and draft pick prospects, so it is unlikely that it will help them this year. Minnesota also dealt away 1st rd pick SP War Sanders in a deal with Kansas City. But what remains is a division winner who ranked 5th in team hitting and pitching in the AL. On the hill, the Twins don't have any bonafide ace, but rather go with depth. All 5 of their starters won 10+ games last year, giving them a shot at a quality start everyday. At bat, they are much of the same with a quality lineup top to bottom rather than relying on 1 or 2 big sluggers. If they had to pick 1 star, it would be 2b Carlos Escues out of the DR. While he has never made and All-star team or won any awards, he has career averages of .332, 10 hr, 84 rbi, 101 runs, 10 sb and .983 field %...very solid numbers for a middle infielder.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Ham Iburg (CLE)
- The 25yo/former 4th overall draft pick had an excellent rookie season going 17-11 despite a slightly high ERA of 4.24. Now slotted in as the Indians' #1 starter, Iburg will be tested often facing other team's aces. He will have to lower his ERA some, but ratings indicate that should be no problem for the talented 2nd year pitcher. 6/20/16 with a 20 in endurance, Ham can pitch deep into games and is very hard to draw free passes off of as his control and movement are impecable. Look for him to make the jump to the next echelon into All-star/elite MLB starting pitcher.

Hitter To Watch: LF Joe McMurrich (DET)
- Mr. consistency, Joe McMurrich. 3 seasons. 3 All-star teams. .310+, 30+ hr, 120+ rbi, 35+ sb. It happens every year for the Tigers' superstar 29 yo. Why should this year be any different? For whatever reason, his HR power has jumped up to 19 this year (17 the past seasons), so McMurrich might even improve on his stellar numbers and be mentioned in MVP conversations this season.

Newcomer To Watch: SP Barney Wolfe (CLE)
- Cleveland is building a pitching staff from the draft. Wolfe joins Ham Iburg, Bill Popp and Ike Butler in the rotation, as 4/5 of Cleveland's rotation are now rookies or in their 2nd season. The 4th overall pick this year, Wolfe might turn out to be the best of the lot. While his stuff is only a 3, his movement and control are 20/19, highest ratings of the quartet, and the 27yo is already maxed out in talent. Starting the year as their #3 starter, Barney has an excellent chance to put up big rookie numbers like the others did, and give Cleveland a dominant young staff to build a championship team around.

American League Western Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Texas Rangers 98 64 .605 - 92-70
Los Angeles (A) Angels 84 78 .519 14.0 80-82
Seattle Mariners 71 91 .438 27.0 81-81
Oakland Athletics 62 100 .383 36.0 64-98
Team To Watch: Seattle Mariners
- Texas and Anaheim have finished 1st/2nd in some order the past 3 seasons, but this might be the season someone else cracks the top of the West. Texas lost their all-everything hitter RF Mike DeBorthwick, the Angels are a year older and questions about their health are circling. Seattle has steadily improved thru both the draft and free agency and this could be their year. Back are their top stars, 2nd year man SP Bob Wicker (16-16, 3.66 era), SB king 3b Sixto Lobo (.301, 109 runs, 62 sb) and 1901 ROY, 2-time All-star & Gold Glover RF Socks Seybold (.333, 7 hr, 63 rbi, 115 runs, 46 sb). And joining them this year is the newly acquired cleanup hitter from Cleveland, 1B Johnny "Nutso" Green, who brings his career averages of 39 hr/112 rbi with him, adding to Seattle something they've never had, a big time slugger.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Ed "Meter Man" Hughs (TEX)
- Hughs took his excellent numbers to new levels last year, winning his 1st Cy Young award while going 25-7 with a 2.10 era, both league leading numbers. But gone this year is their top hitter Mike DeBorthwick and solid hitting 3b Hernandez Facundo meaning alot of Texas' offense is missing. The Meter Man will be counted on even more this year, now as the team's lone superstar, and if the Rangers are going to win their 3rd straight AL West crown, Hughs will have to produce similar numbers to last year's record breaking ones.

Hitter To Watch: 1B Johnny "Nutso" Green (SEA)
- At 38yo. Green is winding down in his career, but Seattle still thinks the 3-time All-star with Cleveland has something in the tank, and lured him to their team with a 2yr/31m deal. He joins the M's and gives them something they have never had, a big time HR hitter. They have always been about speed and small ball, and while all that remains, adding a 40 hr/100 rbi bat into the middle of that could be deadly. Seattle will again have plenty of players hitting .300+ and swiping tons of bases, and Green's career high of 127 rbi in 1900 could be shattered as their main run producer.

Rookie To Watch: SP "Tornado" Jake Weimer (OAK)
- For the 2nd year in a row, an Oakland high pick SP is the rookie to watch out west. #3 pick last year Mike O'Neill struggled last year, going 12-20 with a 4.50 era. Tornado Jake is the #1 pick this year, and Oakland is hoping for quicker success. He has an edge on O'Neill, being 29yo and considered more mature and MLB ready. His ratings are a little lowered though at 6/20/10 and honestly, taking him #1 might have been a mistake as most had Frank Owen or Weldon Henley as the top picks. Weimer will again be thrust right into the MLB rotation like O'Neill was, but as their #4, he should have some easier matchups early on which could be a big confidence booster if he gets off to a hot start.

Washington Nationals 73 89 .451 26.0 75-87
Team To Watch: Atlanta Braves
- The Mets had the best record in the NL, Florida represented the NL in the World Series, why then is Atlanta the team profiled? That's because the 1900 World Series Champs had the best off-season of the 3 and look to regain their division pennant they held from 1900 to 1901. They added RF Isdel "Bananas" Cano (.313/23 hr/101 rbi/110 runs/23 sb) via free agency and RF Doc "Brownie" Gessler & SS Jeff Herrera via draft, both making the 25 man MLB squad. Returning are 1901 MVP/triple crown winner 2b George Boutte (.340/33 hr/101 rbi/117 runs), RBI machine 3b Julio Sarminto (37 hr/143 rbi), 1901 NL Cy Young winner Marvin Hinkle (19-8, 2.53 era) & the most important player, SP Ben Vineyard. Vineyard was signed to a big 5yr/56m deal after his 21-12 1901 season with Toronto, but a Torn Tricep Muscle ended his debut season with Atlanta after only 6 starts. He is back 100% this year, and gives the Braves 2 Cy Young caliber pitchers and 3 MVP caliber hitters in what could be the most star studded team in baseball.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Doc White (NYM)
- Doc was the Mets 3rd rd pick in the 1900 rookie draft, and an after thought with higher drafter Fred Mitchell & Ed Murphy on the team. But White was NY's best pitcher last season in his 2nd year (19-6, 3.49 era) and the lowest drafted of the Mets' big 3 is now their #1 SP. Both Mitchell and Murphy hve been outstanding as well in their 2 MLB seasons, but White is the youngest at 23yoand has the most impressive ratings of 7/20/17. Expect all 3 to again have great seasons, but look for Doc to break away from the others and jump into the top 5 SPs in all of baseball this season.

Hitter To Watch: LF Xavier Delaluz (FLA)
- The reigning NL MVP was simply huge in his 1st season with Florida, putting the team on his back in the playoffs and getting them to the World Series and giving many Cincinnati fans heart attacks for letting him get away after 1901. Always considered a solid player with the Reds, the 26yo from El Salvador had his breakout season last year playing in Florida, posting career highs of .359, 37 hr, 115 rbi, 125 runs and shattering his previous bests. Now considered one of the NL's elite hitters and in his prime at 26, Xavier is a batting title threat with 19/20 in contact, and a 5 tool star with power, speed and defense.

Rookie To Watch: SS Jeff Herrera (ATL)
- Of all the NL East's drafted players, only Herrera is an immediate starter with his team. The 25yo/26th overall pick will slide in right away as Atlanta's starting SS. He brings amazing speed (18/20) and defense (17/20) but will probably struggle a bit with the stick (11 contact, 4 power, 10 eye), but Atlanta has plenty of sluggers on their team, and Herrera gives them 2 things they lack, speed at the top of the lineup (#2 hitter) and gold glove up the middle defense at SS, probably the most important position in the field.

Chicago (N) Cubs 72 90 .444 11.0 76-86
Team To Watch: St. Louis Cardinals
- Division Champs Houston lost one of their top offense stars, Neill Dugger via FA. Cincinnati's top pitcher CJ Earp is coming off season ending surgery. St. Louis had a pretty solid off-season and could be the favorite in baseballs tightest, and most mediocre division. Career .300 hitting C Bill Bobb was acquired via trade with the Dodgers and will give the Cards a solid All-star at backstop. He joins one of the NL's best offenses featuring former IRL MVP Steve Reid, who was hitting .369 before Rupturing his MCL midway last year, slugging RF Bob Andrews (.333/35 hr/120 rbi/119 runs), 1b Glenn O'Heir (.318/20/98) and recent draft picks Wid Conroy (.328), Jimmy Burke (.309) & George Barclay (.326 in the minors), giving St. Louis 7 possible .300 hitters. Their pitching will benefit most from that offense, co-aces Chad Gow (16-7, 3.19 era) & Desi Borayo (17-11, 4.24 era), both have a chance to win 20 this year.

Pitcher To Watch: SP CJ "Madman" Earp (CIN)
- Earp was the 1900 NL Cy Young and was a combined 35-14 in 1900 & 1901 leading the Reds to 2 straight division titles. And then it happened on opening day, 1902...a mere 5 innings into the season, POP, torn tricep. Earp, and the Reds seasons were over. But the amazingly talented 24 yo is back this year as the ace of Cincy, fully healthy, and ready to dominate. His ratings didn't drop much after his injury (15/17/20), so hopefully it's not something that will hurt him down the road, and if he can stay healthy, a return to Cy Young form and the playoffs for Cincy could be in the cards.

Hitter To Watch: 2b Steve "Pistol" Reid (STL)
- Here's the stat line: 1900 (.336 in IRL & MVP, .367 in the majors), 1901 (.338), 1902 (.369). Here's the ratings (17 contact, 16 power, 16 eye). Here's the downfall (1900 2 nagging day-to-day injuries, 1901 bruised foot, missed 2 weeks, 1902 ruptured MCL, missed 7-8 months). When he's on the field, he's on of the best hitters in baseball, especially as a 2b. But can he stay healthy and on the field for a full 150 games? If yes, St. Louis win the Central. If no, another sub .500 record.

Rookie To Watch: SP John Deering (HOU)
- Houston has selected many SPs in the draft the past 3 seasons (Addie Joss, Billy Milligan, Happy Townsend, Jack Sutoff, Roy Patterson). Townsend is the only one to pitch over .500 in a season. Will Deering, the 20th pick in the draft, finally suceed for the Astros? His ratings are less than stellar 2/20/11, but nevertheless, Houston has him plugged in as their #5 starter. Eventually one of these highly touted pitcher draft picks have to break thru, maybe it will be Deering.

Arizona Diamondbacks 81 81 .500 2.0 82-80
Colorado Rockies 81 81 .500 2.0 82-80
San Francisco Giants 77 85 .475 6.0 82-80
San Diego Padres 71 91 .438 12.0 74-88
Team To Watch: San Francisco Giants
- In a division in which 4 teams finished with the same Pyt Record, the one who made the biggest off-season acquisition is the favorite entering next year. Mamo Kirop is a 3-time All-star and former Cy Young winner with a career record of 54-31. Adding him to fellow superstar pitcher Porfiro Moncivaiz gives SF 2 Cy Young caliber aces at the top of their rotation. Offensively, Chris Muirhead leads the way, as the former ROY/3-time All star is coming off a solid, but injury plagued season (.321/21 hr/80 rbi/95 runs). While SF might not be as deep as Arizona or LA, they probably have the top elite level stars, and if they play up to their potential, SF could walk away with the West pennant.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Bill Popp (ARI)
- Arizona has always had amazing hitters but no pitching, but the trade for Popp from Cleveland mid-season changed that. While only 8-10 with Cleveland, Popp was outstanding with the D-backs going 7-3 with a 3.26 era in 11 starts. The 2nd yr man now is Arizona's ace, and finally gives the team a bonafide #1 SP to match a lineup featuring 2 of the top hitters in the game. Expect Popp to benefit mightily from the run support and post a monster season.

Hitter To Watch: 2b Rio "Pongo" Nunez (LA)
- In baseball, there is always some guy who every year puts up amazing stats yet goes unnoticed. Pongo is that early 1900's player. 3 years with LA, 2 All-star teams, and career averages of .335, 20 hr, 96 rbi, 119 runs, 29 sb as a 2b. Hitting 3rd for the division champion Dodgers, Pongo was a major cog in their post-season run, and figures to again put up huge numbers while flying under the radar again.

Rookie To Watch: SP Frank "Yip" Owen (SD)
- Touted as the top prospect in the draft, Owen slipped to #5 to SD who quickly grabbed the future star. 23 yo, ratings of 4/20/17, Owen is an All-star in the making, While starting the year in the minors for the Pads, he should be promoted very early in his rookie season and SD looks to finally have the ace they have been looking for the past few drafts.

Breaking News - Record Contract

BREAKING NEWS - 100 MILLION DOLLAR MAN
(Report Date - 4/8/03)

SS Nap "Larry" Lajoie and the NY Mets have reached an agreement on a record breaking contract extension. Lajoie is now the first ever 100 million dollar man in my baseball universe, inking his name on a 6 yr/$113 million dollar extension.

The 29yo was acquired by the Mets in a blockbuster mid-season trade with Hiroshima of Japan's *** league. Since coming to the states, he has played in 217 games and is widely considered the best contact hitter in all of baseball with a career avg of .366 and .391 in the MLB while leading the Mets to their first division title last season.

He has won 1 gold glove and made 2 All-star teams, and an MVP award is definitely in the future for Nap.

Billings Mustangs 44 56 .440 16.5 51-49
Team To Watch: Orem Owlz
- Orem was the WL's Wildcard team last season but thats to the best pitching staff in the league, they are favored to de-throne Idaho Falls as division champs. #6 overall pick by the Cubs SP Jack McFetridge joins the staff with the lowest team ERA last season that already has Jackson Stone & Jim Woodward (10 game winners last year). This is a young team though, as Chicago had a total of 17 picks in the draft and many will see considerable playing time with Orem. At the plate, last year's best hitter Cy Meatyard (.301/8/54) has some help this year in 8th rd pick Kenneth Harrod (9 contact/7 power) and Armando Navarro, who hit .302 in 82 ab as a backup for the Cubs but will start the year in the minors this season.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Iorgu Randa (MIS)
- The 14th overall pick in the draft by the White Sox from Bulgaria, Randa will begin the season as Missoula's ace. The 23yo projects to be a solid middle of the rotation starter with potential ratings of 9/13/11 and a very solid 94mph fastball. At 208 pounds despite only 5 foot 8, weight issues and stamina have always been a concern with Iorgu, and the White Sox are hoping a year in the minor can get his conditioning in shape and prepare him for the majors.

Hitter To Watch: 3b Carlos Depena (IF)
- As a 1st rd pick in 1901 of Anaheim, Depena spent all last season with the Chukers and REALLY struggled. Hitting just .143 with 4 hr and 43 rbi in 266 ab, scouts started calling him a bust. But his talent ratings of 12 in contact, power & eye will tell you he can be a solid player. At only 21yo, the Angels aren't willing to give up on him yet, and he is still Idaho Fall's starting 3b and #5 hitter and a drastic improvement this year is expected.

- The Washington League representative in the IRL World Series looks like a good bet to repeat thanks in part to a solid draft by the Indians and a return of some of last year's top players. SP Norwood Gibson, Cleveland's 3rd rd pick, steps in as Tri City's new ace, and he looks like he will thrive in both the IRL and MLB when promoted. Joining him at the top of the rotation is 5th rd pick Salvino Riogas and returning as closer is All-star Nobuhiko Hayagawa (24 saves/1.50 era). 7th rd pick Gene Thompson & 9th rd pick Christian Sandlin join a lineup that returns Jim Allen (.234/6 hr/36 rbi) & Emmanuel Moreno (.273/9 hr/43 rbi).

Pitcher To Watch: SP "Tornado" Jake Weimer (YAK)
- The #1 overall pick in last year's draft started the year with Oakland, but after 2 outings in which he was rocker, the A's sent him down to Yakima for some seasoning. The 29yo should use this time in the minors to build his confidence, as he doesn't need time to work on his ratings, they are maxed at 6/20/10. While his stint in the IRL should be a short one, expect Tornado Jake to dominate while here.

Hitter To Watch: CF Phil Haigh (EUG)
- It's put up or shut up time for Haigh, the 2nd rd pick by Florida in the 1900 rookie draft. So far, in 2 seasons with Eugene, he has been nothing short of a disappointment, with career averages of .190, 9 hr, 34 rbi, 35 runs. His ratings have never improved much despite decent talents of 10 in contact and 12 in power. He projects to a MLB part-time player, but if he has another season struggling at the plate, Florida is unlikely to re-sign him in the off-season when he becomes a minor league free agent.

Aberdeen Ironbirds 43 57 .430 17.0 44-56
Team To Watch: Everett Aquasox
- While Everett finished a distant 15 games out last year, Brooklyn and Vancouver lost much of last year's talent and the Aquasox added the #2 overall pick SP Weldon Henley by Cincy. Sliding in as Everett's ace, he has All-star potential at the MLB level, so he might not be here long. He is joined by Harry Kane (12-7, 2.81 era) at the top of their rotation, giving them 2 studs. The offense will be led by Ruben Nunez, who at only 18yo, has spent 2 seasons with Everett already and has career averages of .252, 5 hr, 24 rbi, 40 runs, solid numbers for a young 2b.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Weldon Henley (EVE)
- Tough to choose anyone but Henley, the 2nd overall pick in the draft. The 22yo projects to a star pitcher in the majors (6/20/14) and he has a great ****nel to work with, 5 pitches and an 88mph fastball. He also has amazing 20/20 endurance, making him a proto-typical #1 SP. It's not known how long he will be in the IRL as Cincy can use him in their rotation right now, but while he's here, he's definitely one of the top pitchers in the league.

Hitter To Watch: RF "Silent" John Titus (ABE)
- Titus was the 27th overall pick in the draft by the Yankees and the 27yo was projected to be with the Yankees before they acquired Neill Dugger from Houston. So NY decided to send Silent John to Aberdeen to work on his game. Projected to be a decent contact hitter (14) with little power (2), solid speed (14) and defense (18), Titus was disappointed about not making the major league squad, but he should excel in the IRL until he gets his shot with the Yanks later this season.

Team To Watch: Auburn Doubledays
- After winning the LL East in 1900 & 1901, Auburn wants their crown back after losing out by 1 game last year. #7 pick SP Patsy Flaherty is their new ace and he looks like a stud one at that. Joining Flaherty on the hill is 4 other draft picks by the Dodgers, ranging from a 2nd rounder to a 13th rounder. 22 save man Andy Denoon is a returner at closer. Auburn's biggest strength is when they are at the plate. Tom Jones (.320/50 rbi), Scott Garnett (.238/28 rbi), and Mario Queredo (.343/28 rbi) give them 3 returning solid hitters and are joined this year by Pasqual Huaman & Harrison DeWitt (both 4th rd draft picks)

Pitcher To Watch: SP Addie Joss (WIL)
- The 3rd rd pick in last year's draft, Joss was expected to be with Houston this season after a decent year in Williamsport (7-8, 1.87 era) last year. But the Astros have decided to leave their top pitching prospect in the minors to start the year. Joss had a big off-season, bumping his potential ratings to 6/20/18, and looks to have another good year in the IRL but is chomping at the bit to get to the majors and show that he can succeed on the biggest stage.

Hitter To Watch: RF Steven Kelling (BAT)
- The 2nd rd pick in the 1901 draft by Tampa Bay, Kelling struggled last year in the minors (.163/5/18), but the native of Aruba is only 17yo and still projects to having a bright future. 11/11/11, contact, power, eye talent ratings, while not projecting to superstar numbers, he does look to be solid across the board for Tampa down the road, but the D-Rays would like to see their young prospect have much more success this season before considering a promotion to the majors.

Vermont Lake Monsters 42 58 .420 26.0 46-54
Team To Watch: Mahoning Valley Scappers
- The team with the best record in the IRL last year returns as the favorite this season. Led again by last year's Cy Young Winner Dave Stewart, Mahoning Valley figures again to have one of the top pitching staffs in the IRL. Also returning are Alex Pearson (13-8 with MLB KC last year) & Jago Tamares (18-10) giving them 3 ace-type pitchers. Gabrio Alvallego (.290/8 hr/25 rbi) returns as their top hitter and is joined by draft picks Joe Mirando & Kunitaro Hayashi as the team's top hitters.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Dave Stewart (MV)
- Stewart posted 8-12 & 4-12 seasons in 1900 & 1901 and then came out of nowhere last year, going 20-6 with a 3.50 era and won the CL Cy Young award. Now at 25yo, and nearing his potential ratings of 7/14/9, this could be the make or break year for him. Another dominating season would probably earn him a promotion and spot in the Royals rotation. A return to his previous year's form and he might be gone after the year. Turning point in the 25yo's career.

Hitter To Watch: 1b Ed Whetstone (HAG)
- The 1st pick in the 3rd rd in 1901 by SD, Whetstone showed flashes of his potential last year, hitting only .202 but with 10 hr & 37 rbi. Projected to be a MLB slugging 1b with 12/20 in power and 10/20 in contact potential, the 21 yo is looking to have a breakout year this year, still hitting for power but really improving his avg and earning a shot at the Pads next year.

Lake County Captains 42 58 .420 20.0 43-57
Team To Watch: Lake County Captains
- Neither Lake County or parent team Washington has ever done anything in terms of contending for a division title, so why then are the Captains the choice to watch this year? 1 reason is the acquisition of Bob McGaw from Atlanta who went 12-6 with a 2.06 era with Ogden last year as one of the top pitchers in the league. But the bigger reason is the potential of 4 .300 hitters. Germany Schaefer hit only .182 last year, but 12/20 in contact and 14/20 potential suggests bigger things. Draft picks Ed Phelps, Champ Osteen & Bob Deaver also have high potential contact ratings, and all 4 should hit for high averages for Lake County resulting is much more success.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Clarence Currie (ASH)
- Teammate Pop Williams was the 12th overall pick in the 1901 draft, but Currie, a 5th rd selection was the better pitcher last year. He went 13-6 with a 2.13 era in Asheville and continued his success with San Francisco, going 5-1 with a 2.21 era. That is why it is shocking to see him back in the Giants' minor league system to start the season. At 24yo, his ratings are maxed at 4/20/13 and he has proven success at both the minor and major league levels. Expect Currie to continue pitching solidly and get recalled by the Giants ver early into the season.

Hitter To Watch: 1b Joe Gomex (KAN)
- The 1901 2nd rd pick by Minnesota put it together last year in his 2nd season with Kannapolis. Improving in all numbers, Gomex put up a .217/12 hr/37 rbi season, and only figures to get better. At only 18yo, the native on Panama projects to a MLB everyday player with talent ratings of 13 in contact, 12 in power and 12 in eye and his current ratings really jumped in the off-season, up to 7/8/6, making him one of the front-runners for MVP if he spends the entire year at the minor league level.

Team Spotlight: Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas
- In what is amounting to Chiba Lotte's pitching vs. Tohoku's hitting in the division race, the Ninjas look like they have the edge. With a PL leading 8 All-stars, including 5 of their everyday players, the Ninjas sport the best offense in the league, leading in runs scored, avg and HR. But their pitching staff is nothing to sneeze at, as they feature arguably the best 2 pitchers in the league as well in Patino and Takano, but lack the overall depth of Chiba Lotte. This looks like the year the Ninjas could overtake the Marines as the top team in the Pacific.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Vittorio Patino (TOH)
- Coming over from Atlanta, after 3 straight 20-win seasons in the MLB, everyone figured Patino would dominate in Japan, but this much no one could have bet on. He leads all of the *** in wins, strikeouts and Vorp and leads the PL in ERA and K/BB ratio. A 4th straight 20-win season looks like it's in the cards, and doing that in the *** is even more impressive considering the shorter season.

Hitter Spotlight: LF Dave Vodden (FUK)
- Dave Vodden's awesome 1st half in his 1st season in Japan hasn't helped his team much, as they are 14 games out in the PL, but nevertheless, Vodden would be the runaway MVP if the season ended now. The former star of the Royals in the MLB leads all of the Japanese league in HR, OPS, Vorp and doubles and is also the leader in RBI in the PL. Vodden is also on pace to break the *** record for HR in a season of 44, as he is on pace to hit 51, shattering the old mark.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Yachi Yokota (CHI)
- The only rookie on the PL All-star team, Yokota has only pitched in 7 games since being activated, but is 5-1 with an impressive 2.68 era. Now slotted in permantently as the #5 starter for Chiba Lotte, Yachi should have a big 2nd half and already leads all *** rookies in wins, IP and strikeouts despite only playing in 7 games.

Team Spotlight: Hanshin Tiger
- Where did this come from??? No expert though Hanshin could contend in the Central, that they would finish a distant 5th/6th place again. But once again, led by 2-time MVP, likely 3rd straight this year, Ed Delahanty, the Tiger are in the hunt. With the best offense in the CL, Hanshin is getting production from more than just Big Ed at the plate, as they have 3 other everyday All-stars, most notably 1b Itoh who could be battling with Delahanty for MVP honors. Can they keep this up and get the best player in Japan's short history into the playoffs for his 1st time?

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Mike Ohler (HIR)
- Ohler has always been considered one of the most talented pitchers in all of baseball, but talent doesn't always translate to stats. Since 1900 when he went 21-8 with the Mets, he has gone 30-17 with a 2.91 era, hardly the numbers of one of best pitchers in the world. But this year, Ohler seems to be turning his talents into reality, leading all of Japan in ERA, Whip & Opp Avg and the leader in Vorp among CL pitchers while ranking 2nd in wins.

Hitter Spotlight: SS "Big" Ed Delahanty (HAN)
- Winning the past 2 MVPs and the favorite for his 3rd is nice, but Big Ed wants to win a *** Championship ring, and this might be his best chance as he again is the best hitter in the Central and this time his team is following his lead. He is the leading hitter in all of Japan, and looks to be the favorite for a 2nd batting title. He also leads the CL in OPS & Vorp again, as he seems to every year, which is amazing considering he is neither a power hitter or big run producer. But he can flat out hit, and hopefully this time, he'll get a chance to in September...in the playoffs.

Rookie Spotlight: 1B Wayne Spencer (HIR)
- Hiroshima looks like a lock to have a 2nd straight ROY, this time in Spencer. A 3rd rd pick by Tampa Bay in 1902, he bounced around the waiver wire before finally landing in Japan with Hiroshima, and he definately made the right move. There are 18 major stats tracked for hitters...Spencer leads all *** rookies in every single one of them. The 21yo is also the only rookie on the CL All-star team.

Billings Mustangs 14 34 .292 19.0 12-36
Team Spotlight: Orem Owlz
- Sporting the 2nd best record in the Washington League, and currently in the wildcard position, Orem has rid the league's best offense to a solid 1st start. With the WL's highest team avg, ops & runs scored, they are being led by a WL lead 7 All-stars, including 4 everyday players. Armando Navarro has led the way offensively, but with a team avg of .272, everyone is hitting well for Orem, who plans to ride their offense to the playoffs.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Santos Lopez (OGD)
- Simply ridiculous, that's the only way to describe Lopez's 1st half. 10 starts, 10-0, averaging 8 ip per start, leads all of the IRL in wins, strikeouts, whip and opp avg and leads the WL in ERA & Vorp. At 33yo, after 3 yrs in the majors with Tampa Bay & Atlanta, Lopez was demoted to the minors and is dominating in hopes for another shot at the bigs.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Tony Camorena (IF)
- Anaheim's 3rd rd pick in the 1902 draft, Camorena projects to a solid slugging 1b in the majors. In his first professional season, he leads the WL in both OPS & Vorp and ranks in the top 5 in Avg, HR, RBI & Runs and is one of the leading candidates for MVP in the Washington League.

Jupiter Hammerheads 19 29 .396 9.0 14-34
Team Spotlight: Yakima Bears
- Despite never making the playoffs and team offense & pitching ranking in the middle of the pack in the WL, Yakima looks like a good bet to win it's 1st division title. However a falloff in the 2nd half of the season might not be out of the question as team leader Barry Moen was recently promoted to Oakland, and leaves a big gap in the middle of the Bears lineup. The rest of Yakima's lineup will have to pickup the slack, but fellow All-star Charlie Carr looks like a good replacement as the team's cleanup hitter.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Norwood "Gibby" Gibson (TRI)
- Gibby was a 3rd rd pick of Cleveland in the last rookie draft, and in his 1st season in baseball has been one of the best in the rookie league. While his team Tri City is not living up to last year's WLCS win and World Series berth, Gibson ranks among the league leaders in ERA and has very respectable All-star numbers.

Hitter Spotlight: RF Barry Moen (YAK)
- If not for being promoted to the majors 2 days ago, Moen would enter the All-star break as the WL's batting avg leader. He has been huge in leading Yakima to the division lead at the break, along with the 1st half batting title, he would be in the top 5 in both Vorp & OPS. Odds are Moen won't stick as he has spent 3 seasons in Oakland's minor league system and this is his 1st promotion due to injury, so he still could qualify for the batting crown if he gets enough 2nd half AB in the IRL.

Aberdeen Ironbirds 18 30 .375 13.0 18-30
Team Spotlight: Vancouver Canadians
- Vancouver won the WL West title in 1900 & 1901 and the IRL World Series in 1901, and after a 1 year hiatus last year, a return to the post-season looks like a sure bet as they are the only team with a double digit division lead at the break. Ranking in the top 5 in both teamm offense and pitching, the Canadians have been the most balanced team in the Washington League in the 1st half and their team leaders are a trio of All-stars all hitting well over .300.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Chip Woodward (ABE)
- The only west division pitcher to make the All-star team, Aberdeen's ace Woodward has had a very solid 1st half. While only 5-3, Chip is on pace to destory his career high in wins of 6 in 1901. He ranks 7th in Whip and Vorp in his 1st All-star season.

Hitter Spotlight: C Don Kirtley (VAN)
- Arguabely the best hitter in the WL in the 1st half, and the only 3-time All-star, Kirtley would be all over the league leaderboards if not for an injury which has limited him to only 71 ab this season. Coming over from Pittsburgh's Lakewood IRL team in the off-season, Kirtley still projects to a decent backup C at the MLB level at 21 yo. And all he has done in his 4 seasons in the minors is make 3 All-star teams with career averages of .263, 12 hr, 40 rbi, 38 runs...all numbers that should be shattered this season if he can stay healthy the rest of the way.

State College Spikes 22 26 .458 8.0 24-24
Team Spotlight: Auburn Doubledays
- Easily the best team in the LL East's history, Auburn won the division in 1900 & 1901 and missed out by only 1 game last year. At the break it looks like a return to pennant form might be in the works this year. Led by Avg leader DeWitt & OPS leader Garnett, Auburn easily has the best offense in the LL, leading in team avg and runs scored. Their pitching is also very stout with a great 1-2 punch in Cabargas & Kusunoki at the top of the rotation, giving the Doubledays plenty of star power.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP "Sunny" Jack Sutthoff (WIL)
- Suttoff had a big pride swallower to start the season as the past 2 years, he was a fixture in the Astros rotation, but Houston demoted the 29yo former 2nd rd pick to the minors and Sunny Jack had no choice but to go. It might have done hims some good, as thru the 1st half, he leads the LL in shutouts and IP and is tied for the league lead in wins. While he is not happy being in the minors, a season down here to refine his game might do Sutthoff good in the long run.

Hitter Spotlight: SS Harrison DeWitt (AUB)
- The Dodgers 6th rd pick in the last year's draft was never thought of being a MLB prospect, however thru the 1st half of this season, he is proving the scouts wrong. Leading all of the IRL in Avg & Hits, DeWitt has been one of the best in the game as he flirts with .400 and had helped lead Auburn to a return to the top of the LL East. The defense 1st SS also leads the LL in runs scored as the Doubledays' leadoff hitter and table-setter.

Lowell Spinners 17 31 .354 8.0 17-31
Team Spotlight: Hagerstown Suns
- The LL Central is the league's tightest and worst division, as only 3 games seperate 1st from 5th, and .500 will probably walk away with the pennant, so the team with the best Pyt Record, Hagerstown gets the nod. While the Suns lack much depth, they do have 2 stars in 5th rd pick Eric Marshall, LL leader in HR & slugging, and #5 overall pick Yip Owen, who leads the LL in wins & Vorp. These 2 will have to remain solid for the Suns to walk away with the pennant, but with their talent, odds are it should happen.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Dave Tomkins (MV)
- The 8th rd pick by KC, Hopkins has burst on the scene and at the first half, has been the most effective closer in the IRL. Converting 13 of 14 saves and allowing only 1 run and 6 hits in his 13.1 ip, he has been dominant for the Scappers. He's currently tied for 3 in saves in the LL but mostly due to now having many chances.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Eric Marshall (HAG)
- Marshall is the 1st half HR king, as the 5th rd pick in the 1902 draft has certainly lived up to his scouting report as a big time slugger. He also leads all of the IRL in slugging and ranks 2nd in the LL in RBI & 4th in Runs. He is also hitting .331, and that was the one knock on him, how much would he hit for average, so Marshall has been a very pleasant surprise for Hagerstown.

Team Spotlight: Asheville Tourists
- No team in IRL history has made the World Series 2 seasons in a row, but the defending champion Tourists look like they could break that trend as they lead the LL heading into the All-star break. Led by the 1-2 punch of Pop Williams & Clarence Currie, Asheville has pitched their way to the top record, leading the LL in ERA and Opp Avg. Behind them is closer Arnold Mcgaughey, IRL's leader in saves. Their hitting hasn't been that good, but it wasn't last year either and that didn't hurt them as they won it all.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Pop Williams (ASH)
- Pop only pitched in 5 games for Asheville before being promoted to the Giants, but after a struggling season with SF, going 6-13, they decided to send their former 12th overall pick back to the minors. Tied for the league lead in wins, and in the top 5 in Whip, Williams is certainly using this time to re-build his confidence and work on his pitching before his eventual recall to SF.

Hitter Spotlight: CF Romano Charana (WV)
- Charana has to be wondering if he is every going to sniff the majors. This will be his 4th year in the minors, and for 4 straight years he is going to finish at or near 20 hrs, as the league's all-time HR leader has consistently been a power hitting force. But thru all that time and production, not even 1 MLB at bat. The 21 yo is a free agent after this year, and it might be time for Romano to look at leagues in other parts of the world if he wants to get paid playing this game.

New York (A) Yankees 30 42 .417 14.0 34-38
Team Spotlight: Tampa Bay Devil Rays
- Thru 3 seasons of the MLB, Boston, Toronto and NY have traded division titles...this year it looks like a 4th team in 4 years might win it. Tampa is led by the reigning 2-time MVP Ron Cronshaw, who while his numbers are slightly down from the past 2 seasons is still having an All-star year and one of the best in baseball. However, the entire Devil Ray offense is picking it up around him this year, as they lead the AL in runs scored.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Hitoshi "Rumor Mill" Azuma (TB)
- As a 3-time All-star, Azuma has always been one of the league's best closers, but this year he is taking it to a whole new level. 22 saves in 22 chances, 1 er (a solo HR in a 3 run game) in 24 ip. Rumor Mill has easily been the league's best closer the 1st half and is one of the reasons Tampa is in position for their 1st East pennant, 9th inning, they're up, it's over.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Oliverio Vargas (NYY)
- In a down year for the power hitters, 1 player has emerged as the best of the bunch and overcome the homer drought this year. Leading all of the majors, Vargas has 5 more HRs than the player in 2nd place. He also leads the AL in RBI & OPS while making his 1st All-star team at 23yo.

Rookie Spotlight: LF Davy "Kangaroo" Jones (BOS)
- Hey what a shock, Boston again has one of the league's best rookies. A 3rd rd pick in 1901, Jones spent most of last year in Boise in the IRL, only coming up with Boston in September. This year, as the Sox starting LF, he leads all AL rookies in hits, Avg, OPS, SB & Vorp. Every year it seems like Boston has one of the top rookies, however they haven't seemed able to duplicate their rookie success in subsequent seasons.

American League Central Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Detroit Tigers 39 33 .542 - 38-34
Cleveland Indians 38 34 .528 1.0 40-32
Chicago (A) White Sox 34 38 .472 5.0 37-35
Minnesota Twins 34 38 .472 5.0 33-39
Kansas City Royals 31 41 .431 8.0 40-32
Team Spotlight: Cleveland Indians
- Cleveland has never finished higher than 3rd in the Central, but this year they are hot on the tails of Detroit and look like a good bet to overtake the Tigers. Armed with the AL's best pitching staff, a full 0.35 runs less per game than anyone else, and league leader in OPS & CG, the Indians' pitching staff has been impressive. Led by Wolfe & Reiss, Cleveland has 2 all-star SPs, but their best might be Ham Iburg, who is only 5-7 at the break. With a deep and talented staff, and the old saying of "Pitching wins in the playoffs", Cleveland is the favorite to take home the Central.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Bill Reiss (CLE)
- Cleveland's #4 SP was not thought of much more than an inning eater, never winning more than 14 and even losing 21 one season, a career record of 42-48, Reiss has come out of nowhere this season. Making his first All-star team, he is one of the top AL pitchers in both wins and Vorp while serving as the best pitcher on the best staff thru the break.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Felipe Ocura (MIN)
- While not listed on any leaderboard, Ocura has been one of the top overall hitters in the Central this season. Hitting nearly .340, he is on pace for to hit 20-25 hr with 110 rbi & runs. Not world shattering numbers, but certainly a very solid season for Panama native, who earned his 1st All-star bid.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Barney Wolfe (CLE)
- As the 4th overall pick in last year's draft, Wolfe has certainly lived up to the hype early in his career. Probably the leading candidate for AL ROY at this point, Wolfe made the AL All-star team and is tied for rookie lead in wins, while leading all MLB rookie pitchers in IP, shutouts, Opp Avg & Whip and leading the AL rooks in ERA & Vorp.

Seattle Mariners 45 27 .625 - 45-27
Los Angeles (A) Angels 39 33 .542 6.0 37-35
Oakland Athletics 36 36 .500 9.0 32-40
Texas Rangers 27 45 .375 18.0 28-44
Team Spotlight: Los Angeles (A) Angels
- While the usually sub .500 Seattle's division lead is the feel good story, the Angels are probably the best team in the division and are the AL Wildcard right now, but recaptureing the West pennant, which they haven't won since 1900, is still very do-able. With former MVP Jorge Balcorta recovering fully from a bad injury last year and looking like an MVP candidate again, the Angels have the experience and leader. Add in Berner & Blakeslee and the Triple B's have an amazing heart of the lineup that is tough for any pitcher to deal with.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Ed "Meter Man" Hughs (TEX)
- The reigning AL Cy Young winner is having a solid season, but with losing many of his teammates in the off-season, the Rangers 2-year run as division champs is dead. Hughs has won about 30% of the teams total wins this season while making his 2nd straight All-star team. And despite an 8-6 record, you could argue he has been the Al's best pitcher, leading the league in ERA, Whip, Strikeouts and Vorp...very impressive considering they are the worst team in the AL.

Hitter Spotlight: 2B Jorge Balcorta (ANA)
- Balcorta was one of the games best players from 1900-1902. but a bad injury (torn achilles tendon) cut last year short and fears he would never be the same surfaced. Jorge silenced his critics with his 4th straight All-star selection, leading the AL in OB%, Vorp and runs, and ranking among the leaders in OPS & SB. At 32, he still has 4-5 quality seasons left in him, and it's good to see an injury didn't end a great's career early.

Rookie Spotlight: CF Chet Fibbin (ANA)
- The 1st rd pick by Anaheim back in the 1900 rookie draft has finally made his mark on the majors. After 2 productive season in Idaho Falls of the IRL, the 19yo Fibben won the starting CF job for the Angels and is doing a very good job in his 1st season in the bigs. Hitting .267 with 3 hr, 24 rbi, 31 runs and 12 sb, with plenty of room to grow before reaching his full potential, Chet looks like he is going to be a solid major leaguer. He leads all AL rookies in HR, RBI & Runs.

Washington Nationals 28 44 .389 19.0 29-43
Team Spotlight: Philadelphia Phillies
- While making the playoffs is unlikely, Philly gets the nod here. After 3 dismal seasons of 60, 63, 79 wins, and horrible front office decisions (like letting Christy Mathewson walk to Japan), it looks like the Phillies have finally turned the corner as a franchise. Led by young stars such as Win Kellum, Case Patton, Spencer Wilson, Topsy Hartsel, Harmon Langmead & Tyler Brown, the Phillies look to be a team on the rise and one to watch in the future.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Marvin Henkle (ATL)
- The 1901 NY Cy Young winner is trying his best to keep Atlanta in the playoff hunt, but he's not getting much help in the pitching dept. Ranking 2nd in the NL in ERA with 1.97, no one else on Atlanta's staff is below 3.25, proving that Henkle is basically fighting the battle solo. He also leads the NL in Whip and is among the leaders in Whip, Strikeouts & Vorp, but there is only so much 1 man can do.

Hitter Spotlight: LF Xavier Delaluz (FLO)
- The reigning NL MVP is making a run at his 2nd award in as many years, despite the reigning NLCS Champs Florida falling on hard times. Delaluz leads the NL OPS and is in the top 5 Avg, HR, Runs & Vorp as he proves last year was no fluke and he truly is one of the game's best.

Rookie Spotlight: C Damien Cowen (NYM)
- The former jewel of the Mets minor league system, Cowen is proving that his talents translate well at the MLB level in his 1st season as NY's starting catcher. Leading all NL catchers in Avg, Hits, RBI & Vorp, the 23yo out of Aruba is already one of the game's best and has a long and bright future as the Mets backstop.

St. Louis Cardinals 35 37 .486 6.0 36-36
Milwaukee Brewers 33 39 .458 8.0 33-39
Pittsburgh Pirates 33 39 .458 8.0 36-36
Team Spotlight: Cincinnati Reds
- The only 2 champs the Central has ever seen, the Reds & Astros, are duking it out again this year. While both would be in the playoffs if the season ended now, Cincy has the inside track on winning the division crown thanks in large part to a far superior offense. One of the NL leaders in team runs, avg & HR, cincy is being led by FA signee McGowan and former IRL RBI king von Lenski. On the hill, another FA import, Jeremy Millsap is doing it again, making another all-star team for the 4th straight year, and former Cy Young, CJ Earp has returned to form, giving Reds the horse at the top of the rotation.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Jeremy "Ignator" Millsap (CIN)
- Haven't we seen this before. Millsap now has 4 consecutive All-star bids...on 4 different teams. No one signs this guy to more than a 1 yr deal despite that fact that he is only now 30yo and the best closer in the history of the MLB. With 18 saves in 20 chances and an anemic whip under 1.00, someone NEEDS to lock this guy up to a long term deal, maybe Cincy will give him an extension this season. Or maybe next year he'll be 5 for 5 with a 5th squad.

Hitter Spotlight: RF Bob "Doodles" Andrews (STL)
- Doodles is a vet at 34yo, but is always one of the NL's best OF's and this year is no different. Making his 2nd All-star appearance in his 4th year as the Cards' cleanup man, Andrews is among the league leaders in RBI, OPS & Vorp and again putting up impressive stats as he enters the tail end of his stellar career.

Rookie Spotlight: RF Cecil Falconer (CHN)
- The Cubs might finally have found a cleanup hitter for a team that always ranks among the worst in offense. 2nd yr pick in the 1902 draft, Falconer is having a very impressive 1st season in the majors. The 22yo is hitting .315 with 37 rbi and a MLB rookie lead with 8 hr & 45 runs while ranking in the top 5 in Avg, RBI OPS & Vorp among rookies

Los Angeles (N) Dodgers 35 37 .486 3.0 38-34
San Francisco Giants 35 37 .486 3.0 32-40
San Diego Padres 26 46 .361 12.0 29-43
Team Spotlight: Arizona Diamondbacks
- Arizona has alot of "arguably" in their profile. Arguably the best team never to win the World Series with 2 NL West titles and looking like a 3rd this year. Arguably the best player never to win an MVP in Sexto Lopez. Will this year finally be the year Arizona wins the ring? Will they even hold on or fold like last year when the Dodgers overtook them in the 2nd half? Will Lopez keep up a hot 1st start winning the MVP award? Or will the arguably be known as a chokers?

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Bembe Garcia (LA)
- In 1900, at the age of 35, Garcia became MLB's 1st ever 20 game winner with a 23-6 season. Since then, as expected dur to aging, he went 30-20 and has seen his skills diminish. But at the age of 38, Bembe is showing that he might have 1 more great season in him. Despite being LA's #4 pitcher behind younger, more talented guys, he is the Dodger's lone All-star and is their only pitcher with more than 7 wins or under a 3.00 era. Tied for the NL lead in wins and 2nd in IP despite approaching 40, Garcia might have found the fountain of youth this season in a return to his 1900 form.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Sexto Lopez (ARI)
- Lopez quite possibly is the best hitter in the history of the MLB. He should have 2 MVP's but lost out in close votes twice. He should be making his 4th consecutive All-star appearance but an injury early in the 1901 season forced him to miss too much time to make the team. He again is all over the NL leaderboard, leading in Hits, HR, RBI, Runs & Vorp and a slight 2nd in Avg. And he is the all-time MLB leader in Vorp, Hits & RBI. Will Lopez finally win the MVP crown that has eluded him the past 2 seasons?

Rookie Spotlight: SP Chappie McFarland (SD)
- In a downyear for rookies in the NL West, McFarland has been the best the division has to offer. The 3rd rd pick in last year's draft is 5-6 with a 5.68 era, hardly impressive numbers, but he is the division's best rookie and he currently is the Padres #4 SP. Despite the poor start to his career, his ratings indicate he should be a quality SP and he might just be overwhelemed at the MLB level right now.
