1903 FINAL STANDINGS

It was thought that the pennant would come down to a battle between the past two CL champions, Cincinnati and Boston. A surprise entry in the race dashed their hopes however as the New York Highlanders surged from 7th place in 1902 to handily win by a healthy 7 games. They improved their record by an amazing 23 games. Their success is mostly attributed to their dominant pitching staff who led the CL with a team ERA of 2.29. Watty Lee and Roy Patterson each won 20 games for the boys on the hill, and Cy Seymour emerged as a huge offensive threat.

It was a 3 team race all season long as the Knights, Pilgrims, and Tigers each took turns in the top spot. New York was the favorite yet again, but their chances were dealt a huge blow when their team leader, "Wee Willie" Keeler broke his knee in a collision at home plate in the final preseason game of the year, knocking him out for the entire 1903 season. You may recall that Keeler had just returned from a torn groin muscle which had knocked him out of the 1902 postseason. The Fates don't seem to like these Knights. Led by Freddy Parent, the Pilgrims took advantage of the opening by racing their way around the bases all season long, stealing an amazing 301 bases. They hope to bring respect to the Federal League after the humiliation received in the last two World Series at the hands of the Continental League champs.

ROY "THE NATURAL" HOBBS, CF, NEW YORK (F) KNIGHTS - Hobbs had a disappointing season across the board, slumping in nearly every category. Offense was down all over, but something else was obviously bothering "The Natural". Perhaps the absence of his mentor Willie Keeler had a greater impact than expected.

LAZARUS "GERMANY" DAVID, SS, BROOKLYN PERFECTOS - In the field, David was a whiz, but he was positively anemic at the plate. Still, he's only 19 and he has a ways to go before he reaches his true potential.

1903 WORLD SERIES

9/30/1903 - GAME 1 PILGRIMS 3 - HIGHLANDERS 2

The Pilgrims for 2 runs in the top of the 3rd to break open the game. Vic Willis shut down the Highlanders the rest of the way to put the Federal league champs up 1 game to zip. 3 errors by New York certainly didn't help things.

10/1/1903 - GAME 2 PILGRIMS 0 - HIGHLANDERS 4

Cy Seymour launched a solo shot in the 1st inning and that was all Watty Lee would need to put the Pilgrims out to pasture and tie the Series before the contest heads back to Boston.

10/3/1903 - GAME 3 HIGHLANDERS 5 - PILGRIMS 1

Kip Selbach got on base 4 times to lead New York and Billy Lauder knocked in 2 RBI to knock down Boston for the second game in a row.

10/4/1903 - GAME 4 HIGHLANDERS 14 - PILGRIMS 2

With the help of 4 errors from Boston, the Highlanders made it ugly with a 6 spot in the 6th and another half dozen runs in the 8th to demolish the Pilgrims in front of their home crowd. Billy Lauder continued his hot streak by knocking in 3 runs, including a 2 run bomb to start the scoring..

10/5/1903 - GAME 5 HIGHLANDERS 5 - PILGRIMS 4

The New York batters gave Watty Lee a 5 run comfort zone in the 2nd and, although the Pilgrims battled back, that was all she wrote as they won their 4th game in a row to keep the Continental League dominance intact.

NOTEWORTHY EVENTS - 1903

* italicized events actually happened

  • January 19 - Ransom E. Olds introduces the first automobile at a technology exposition in Lansing, Michigan. Orders begin to pour into Olds Motor Works immediately. Olds Motor Works advertising pointed out that keeping a horse cost its owner and estimated $108 a year, whereas the owner of a Curved Dash would spend an average of $35 per year in fuel and maintenance

    Olds Motor Works' Curved Dash

  • March 3 - President William Jennings Bryan goes on a hunting trip in the Mississippi where black bears were plentiful and easy to hunt. A fellow hunter captures a bear cub and tied it so that President Bryan could shoot it for fun. He refuses, and orders that the cub be set free. News coverage of the event inspired Rose and Morris Michtom, owners of the Ideal Toy Company, to create the "billy bear". A national craze ensues for the toy every child must have.
  • March 22 - Under pressure from Pope Solomon I and H.R. Kaiser Oskar, King Leopold II of Belgium, Grand Duke Adolphe of Luxembourg and Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands are "convinced" to sign The Brussels Pact, officially joining the D.H.R.V.

Leopold II, Grand Duke Adolphe & Queen Wilhelmina

  • April 15 - Pope Solomon I dissolves the Swiss Guard, replacing them with his personal entourage of Die Heilige Untersuchung.
  • August 30 - Foster M. Voorhees, Governor of New Jersey, and Samuel W. Pennypacker, Governor of Pennsylvania, each announce that they will seek the 1904 Republican nomination for President of the United States.

Foster M. Voorhees & Samuel Pennypacker

  • October 26 - Citing health concerns, Vice President Stevenson announces that he will not seek the Democratic Party nomination for President in 1904. Privately it is reported that he has become disillusioned with Washington politics after serving with President Bryan.
  • November 3 - With the encouragement of the United States, Panama proclaims itself independent from Colombia.
  • November 17 - The Russian Social Democratic Labor Party splits into two groups; the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks.
  • November 23 - Colorado Governor James Hamilton Peabody sends the state militia into the town of Cripple Creek to break up a miners' strike.
  • November 29 - Troops from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the D.H.R.V. begin to build up between Munich and Prague

    Austro-Hungarian troops fill the trenches

  • December 17 - Orville Wright flies aircraft with a petrol engine at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in first documented successful controlled powered heavier-than-air flight. It crashes after 200 feet, killing Wright in the impact. Orville's brother Wilbur never attempts flight again.

Here's a question for you all..... I was thinking of running each presidential election as a one day poll on the boards, perhaps even the primaries. What do you guys think of that?

Consider it done. I'll be posting the primaries early (maybe even tonight), so we don't have to wait too long for the election results.

They didn't have primaries back then, though.

I just realized that myself. They did have conventions, though. Just a matter of terminology for my purposes.
