Kids in high schools around here have been busted for taking steroids, there's no reason to believe Thome or Thomas didn't start then either. Just because they were big early doesn't make them any less suspect. McGwire was a big dude and hit 49 homers long before he is suspected of starting to use steroids. Being such an outspoken proponent of testing early on does work in Thomas' favor I think. It could have been a front but it's not particularly likely.

Also, if you look at Thomas's numbers, the power was there since day one, and there was never a particularly sharp increase or decrease relative to the rest of his career - his abbreviated 2005 notwithstanding, when he was pretty much trying to hit a home run with every swing because he could barely run. Thomas hit 32 home runs in his first full season - Rafael Palmeiro hit 16 home runs in his first two full seasons combined.

Personally, I find any allegations of Thomas and steroids to be completely ludicrous. Same for Thome, whose power numbers have consistenly been there since the beginning of his career.
Hey, I'm not saying I think he's a steroid user -- I'm saying we know exactly as much about what he's put into his body as we know about any other player who hasn't tested positive for or admitted to using steroids. If we're going to consider everybody else in MLB whose steroid status we're unsure of as "tainted", it's patently unfair not to do the same with him.

...so you're not saying that he's used steroids, but that we should assume he's guilty until he's proven innocent?

For what it's worth, we don't know if he's tested negative for steroids because those results (to my knowledge) aren't released - he very well may have been tested since the policy went into effect and passed.

I think the biggest thing in Frank's favor is that he has long been an outspoken proponent of a testing policy - not the sort of thing a guy on the juice would be likely to support.

Nah, what myloins is saying is that Frank Thomas should be getting any kind of pass that others aren't getting. That's all.

Although his outspokenness sure works in his favor, I'd say. Frankly (no pun intended), I just try not to think about it.

Well, his agent claimed tonight that Sosa is retired in every way except having his name on the "retired list."

So he's retired in the fact that he won't be playing because nobody will meet his salary demands?

No, I'm saying everyone else is innocent until proven guilty. Unless you're comparing Thomas directly to a proven steroid user, he shouldn't be given any sort of boost in image. In other words, the "steroid cloud that hangs over many other 90's power hitters" shouldn't be used as some evidence to boost his HoF status (not that it should be in doubt anyway), because there's no more evidence that most of those power hitters were steroid users than there is that he was.

I thought it was suspected that McGwire was using steroids from essentially the moment he met Jose Canseco.

Bad year in 2004. Bad year in 2005. If only one team has the guts to offer you a contract and it's ONLY $500,000 with a chance to make more, just swallow your pride and agreed to it. If not, shut up go home and retire. Goddamn, that's just wrong. And why is his agent doing all the talking....have some balls and speak up. Half a mil....I'd say yes in heartbeat. Hell, it's baseball. That irks me....sorry.
