I still don't know how anybody can consider this better than Wilt's game. Sure, Wilt was a man among boys at the time, but his points came much more in the normal flow of the game, Philly had 5 players in double figures for that game. Take into account his 25 rebounds (say all you want about his position being different than Kobe's, if you want to say that it's the best performance of all time then you HAVE to take into account the other numbers) and the fact that he got to the line 32 times and despite having a career .511 FT%, he hit 28 (.875).

I don't discount Kobe's 81 at all. I just think it's 2nd to Chamberlain.

One interesting note that I just discovered.. Wilt averaged 50.4 points and 25.7 rebounds in the 1962 season, yet the MVP award went to Bill Russell, who averaged 18.9 PPG, 23.6 RPG and 4.5 APG.

I wonder if Allen Iverson will hoist 46 shots in his next game.

No three-second rule at the time.

Opponent was playing a backup center.

Wilt Chamberlain scored 59% of his team's points. Bryant scored 66% of his team's points. Throw in the fact that Chamberlain was playing with another Hall of Famer in Arizin and it's basically a moot point. Chamberlain's TS% was "only" .649. Kobe's was .739. Wilt scored 100 in a 169-147 game; or 68% of the opponent total. Kobe scored 81 vs. Toronto's 104, or 78% of their total. Wilt needed 48 minutes to get his totals. Kobe got his in 41 minutes. Wilt's game had 138 possessions. Kobe's game only had 105. If Kobe had that many possessions, he was on pace for 106 points. Do you need me to go on?

Please do.

While we're throwing out stats, Wilt claimed to have slept with 20,000 women. Kobe acknowldges sleeping with but one (but has had to argue that it was with consent; I can't see Wilt ever having to make that argument). Advantage: Wilt.

In addition to the other responses in answer to your post, the ESPN morning show was saying it was best because it was a guard shooting mostly from the perimiter.

I think their both truly exceptional feats and don't really see the need to compare. And yes, Eck said it well.

Ha, well at the game, whenever Kobe got the ball, the entire Raptors team converged on him. I think he got the majority of his last dozen points or so at the line.

There was one great behind the back dribble past a defender into a pump on one side of the rim, pull down, and finger roll up the other side of the rim, but he missed that shot.

The 60% vs. 30% Kobe/teamates shooting percentages seems very relevent to me in considering the ballhog argument. It would seem like wise strategy to me to get the ball to the players who shoot best on your team....that's just me.

The difficulty at which the points were scored is why it makes it better. Wilt Chamberlain put his big body in the lane, and was unstoppable. By all means, I'm taking no credit away from Wilt because he is the most dominant player in the history of the NBA. But when a swing player (who has to dribble through defense and pull up to shoot his shots) goes for 81, it is much harder than Wilt's layup and dunk after layup and dunk.

Wilt's game would be equivalent to about a 70-point, 20-rebound performance (or something like that, at today's pace). If Shaq in his prime had ever gotten hot from the FT line, he could have approached that, I'm sure. He did get to 61 once.

A 70 pt, 20 reb performance versus an 81 pt, 6 reb performance. Forced to choose, I'll take the 81 points, but I can see the other side of it.

I can't stand Kobe Bryant.

That said, he's currently the best player in the NBA, and his 81 is definately more impressive than Wilt's 100.

Gotcha. Wilt was better, so you expect accomplishments like that out of him as a matter of course. So for a low in the rotation guy to go out and put up twenty is an equally huge accomplishment, because of the difficulty of putting up points when you're the fifth option in short minutes.

If Shaq didn't have to worry about the 3-second rule, he could've hit for 80, and maybe knocked on 100, more than once in his prime.

Wilt wasn't much of FT shooter either.

simply amazing.

1 note, if it matters, no 3-pointer in Wilt's day.

I didn't say anything about "expecting" Wilt to dominate. I said Kobe's 81 was harder (in degree of difficulty) than Wilt's 100.

Agreed.

EDIT: No I don't, Penny Hardaway would've stolen a few of his shots

Actually, we can assume Kobe has slept with his wife. Let's call that two women. He's getting closer...

Has he ever claimed that? Maybe he did, during the Colorado saga, I'm not sure.

Either way, 20,000 - 2 is an impressive advantage for the stilt (and what did THAT refer to??).
