September 1890 Results from Scammon Street

SCAMMON, KS - Tonight's fight card features two currently undefeated fighters, Chet Shandel against top 10 boxer Duncan McDonald in the Main Event, and 23-0 Peter Courtney as he squares off against Pete McCoy in an undercard bout.

McDonald started the action in tonight's Main Event with a flurry, winning the first 3 rounds from Shandel. Near the end of the third, Shandel's forehead was split by an accidental head butt, a cut that bled freely off and on throughout the bout. In the 10th, Shandel returned the favor, opening a cut over McDonald's left eye. Going into the 11th, most fans saw the fight as even. Unfortunately, the 11th was to come to an abrupt halt at the very outset of the round, as the first punch hurled by Duncan McDonald bounced off the forehead of Chet Shandel. The shot did not hurt Shandel, but it busted McDonald's hand, and he was unable to continue. A TKO victory for Shandel, who remains undefeated, and a heartbreaking setback for McDonald, who will be inactive for some time.

On the undercard, John Morrissey scored the quickest victory so far in UoLBA history with a knockout of Henry Higgins at 1:15 in the 1st. Peter Courtney survived a second round 8-count knockdown to drop Pete McCoy for the count in the 10th and preserve his perfect record.

Below are the complete results of tonight's fights:

September 1890 Results from Exhibition Gardens

VANCOUVER – Hasim Rahman dominated a tentative and overmatched Jack Boylan tonight, controlling the bout and dropping Boylan for the count in the 8th round. Boylan, who many thought would give Rahman a stiff challenge, never seemed to find his stride. Rahman, for his part, showed the skills that make him one of the top heavyweights in the UoLBA, and a prime challenger for the crown.

On the undercard, Joe Coburn continued his climb up the ranks, Decisioning a surprisingly tough Charlie O’Donnell to remain undefeated. Joe Goss, another top 20 fighter, retired C.C. Smith on cuts in a six round beating that fully displayed Goss’ superior skills.

Below are the complete results of tonight’s bout:

September 11, 1890
HW: Hasim Rahman 23-1-0 (19) KO8 Jack Boylan 21-1-0 (3)
HW: Joe Goss 22-1-1 (21) TKO6 C. C. Smith 21-2-0 (13)
HW: Joe Coburn 22-0-1 (11) MD10 Charlie O'Donnell 20-2-1 (7)
HW: Harry Woodson 19-2-2 (11) TKO2 John P. Clow 21-1-0 (5)
HW: McHenry Johnson 19-2-3 (7) UD8 Art Schultz 9-11-2 (2)

September 1890 Results from Forbes Field

PITTSBURGH – Forbes Field hosted the premium fight card of the month, featuring current #1 challenger for the UoLBA crown, John C. Heenan, against 8th ranked Leroy Jones. Heenan must have read the pre-fight press on the match, which indicated he would have an easy time dispatching Jones. The Benicia Boy appeared to have taken the bout lightly, packing a few extra pounds into the ring with him. Jones, for his part, was primed for a big night. Heenan was soon to regret his lack of training, falling behind in the early rounds to his much more active opponent. After 5 rounds, Jones led on all cards, and the crowd began to believe the seemingly invincible Heenan was on his way to defeat. But Heenan’s devastating punch remained despite his lack of training for the bout. The sixth proved to be the turning point in the match, as Heenan’s power finally caught up with Jones. Jones staggered around the ring throughout the round, finally hitting the canvas for a six count in the last minute of the round. Jones was not the same fighter from this point onward, as Heenan continued to connected with the face and body of his wilting opponent. Jones lasted the match, but when it was over, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Heenan was the winner.

On the undercard, Jim Harvey remained undefeated in a very impressive win over Peter Maher. Many experts considered Maher the favorite in the match, and the Line had Maher a 3-1 favorite going in. But Harvey ignored popular opinion, winning almost every round in a dominating effort over his Irish challenger. In other matches, Tommy Chandler continued to impress in a first round knockout over Dan McCarty, and Joe Choyinski won a tight victory over Alonzo Johnson

Below are the complete results of tonights bout:

September 22, 1890
HW: John C Heehan 25-1-0 (23) UD12 Leroy Jones 20-1-1 (5)
HW: Jim Harvey 22-0-1 (6) UD10 Peter Maher 22-1-0 (17)
HW: Tommy Chandler 21-1-2 (13) KO1 Dan McCarty 16-3-2 (1)

HW: Tom Lees 20-2-2 (13) UD8 Jem Stewert 14-2-6 (3)

September 1890 Top 10

Champion – John J. Dwyer
2 – John C. Heenan
3 – Frank Slavin
4 – Hasim Rahman
5 – Tommy Chandler
6 – Bill Bradburn
7 – James Dalton
8 – McHenry Johnson
9 – Peter Jackson
10 – John Morrissey

The top 7 stay the same from August. Despite a dominating performance by Rahman, he stays at #4. Leroy Jones drops from the 8 spot after his defeat at the hands of John Heenan. He is replaced by McHenry Johnson, whose seemingly meaningless thrashing of tomato can Art Schultz impressed the UoLBA brass enough to bump him into the top 10. Duncan McDonald, whose unfortunate injury ended his match prematurely, also drops from the ranks and Peter Jackson, while remaining idle in September, takes his place at #9. Slugging Irishman John Morrissey, also idle in September, regains his spot at #10.

October 1890 Fight Cards Announced

The Universe of Leather Boxing Association has announced the fight cards for October, and there are a couple of very exciting matches.

PITTSBURGH - Forbes Field hosts what promises to be an intriguing contest between #3 ranked Frank Slavin 23-3-0 (16) and undefeated, highly regarded #20 Chet Shandel 22-0-1 (12). Slavin had the choice between a couple of other matches, but chose Shandel, who is fresh off of an impressive victory over Duncan McDonald last month.

On the undercard, undefeated top contender #15 Dominic McCaffrey 23-0-0 (10) continues his quest to crack the top 10 as he duels #58 Jack Welsh 20-2-0 (2); crowd favorite #19 Jake Kilrain 20-3-1 (2) faces #23 Fred Crossley 19-3-0 (10); and #30 Tom Allen 22-1-0 (12) squares off against #38 Al Greenfield 18-4-1 (8).

VANCOUVER - Vancouver's Exhibition Gardens welcomes #2 in the world John C. Heenan 26-1-0 (23) in a feature match against #61 Sailor Charles Brown 19-3-0 (3).

On the undercard, #6 ranked Bill Bradburn 23-1-0 (9) will meet #21 Billy Keough 21-1-0 (15); #29 Joe Choynski 20-2-1 (10) faces #48 Australian Billy Smith 16-2-4 (7); and #44 Jack McAuley 20-3-1 (3) vs. Steve Taylor 19-2-1 (4).

SCAMMON, KS - Ninth ranked heavyweight Peter Jackson 23-1-0 (10) headlines the Main Event against #27 Toxie Hall 21-1-2 (1). Jackson hopes to continue his march to the top of the UoLBA, while a win for Hall would bring him instant respectability.

On the undercard, #5 Tommy Chandler 22-1-2 (14) meets #37 Morris Grant 20-2-0 (9); #45 Joe Goddard 21-2-0 (10) faces #47 Mervine Thompson 21-2-0 (12); and #59 Mike Conley 12-4-6 squares off against #185 Bill Partridge 2-15-6.

Huge upset last night at Scammon

SCAMMON, KS - The UoLBA world was rocked last night with a stunning upset that shook up the top 10. Tommy Chandler, ranked #5 in the world and a top HW contender, tonight met his match in the person of #37 ranked Morris Grant. Both fighters came into the match in prime condition. At the outset, however, Grant was the aggressor. From the opening bell, Grant hit Chandler early and often, keeping Chandler on the defensive. Observers were thrilled at the toe-to-toe action of the two fighters, and shocked at the superiority of Grant's shots as the fight progressed. Then in the 4th, Chandler hit the canvas and just about didn't make it up, climbing to his feet at the 8 count. From this point on, Grant seemed to be able to hit him at will, and Chandler never seemed to find his rhythm. In round 9, Chandler went down again, this time for a 9 count, and while he never landed a punch for the remainder of the round, his wobbly legs carried him to the bell. Grant continued his dominance in the 10th and final round, and by the time it reached the judges, the results were assured. Grant takes home the UD10 victory over Chandler!!!

The Main Event saw Peter Jackson win a SD12 victory over a pesky Toxie Hall. Jackson truly won the match in all eyes, but had a point taken from him in the late rounds for a phantom low blow. This point deduction narrowed the margin of victory, and pushed the fight into a SD instead of a UD. With Chandler's loss, Jackson's victory moves him to #6 in the UoLBA.

Below are the complete results from Scammon:

October 1, 1890
HW: Peter Jackson 23-1-0 (10) SD12 Toxie Hall 21-1-2 (1)
HW: Morris Grant 20-2-0 (9) UD10 Tommy Chandler 22-1-2 (14)
HW: Joe Goddard 21-2-0 (10) TKO6 Mervine Thompson 21-2-0 (12)
HW: Mike Conley 12-4-6 (0) UD8 Bill Partridge 2-15-6 (0)

October 1890 Results from Exhibition Gardens

VANCOUVER - John C. Heenan continued his dominance in the heavyweight division with a resounding TKO victory over Sailor Charles Brown in 6 rounds of action in tonight's Main Event. Brown was never in the match, spending more time on the canvas than upright, with 6 knockdowns in the contest. Brown was down 3 times in the 6th, with the 3rd ending the match for Heenan.

On the undercard, Billy Keough was ahead on all three judges cards when he was retired in the third because of a bad cut on his left eyebrow. Keough suffered the cut in the first round from a hard right by Bradburn, but managed to dominate the bout until a third trip to the ringside doctor ended his quest. Keough's corner was furious over the stoppage, and demanded a rematch with Bradburn. No word yet from Bradburn's camp whether he is interested in tangling with Keough again anytime soon. Bradburn solidifies his spot at #5 in the UoLBA with tonight's win.

Below are full results from tonight's fights:

October 9, 1890
HW: John C Heehan 26-1-0 (23) TKO6 Sailor Charles Brown 19-3-0 (3)
HW: Bill Bradburn 23-1-0 (9) TKO4 Billy Keough 21-1-0 (15)
HW: Joe Choynski 20-2-1 (10) TKO9 Billy Australian Smith 16-2-4 (7)
HW: Steve Taylor 19-2-1 (4) UD8 Jack McAuley 20-3-1 (3)

Oh My! Forbes field October fight card UNFORGETTABLE!

PITTSBURGH - The fight of the year, as it was dubbed going into tonight's match, was every bit as exciting as everyone anticipated. Tonight, Frank Slavin, the #3 fighter in the world, put his title hopes on the line against undefeated contender Chet Shandel. Shandel, who last month vanquished 5th ranked Duncan McDonald, hoped for more of the same against Slavin. Slavin, for his part, saw the match as an opportunity for a big gate against an opponent he thought beatable.

Round 1 thru 4 was an even contest, with both fighters locking horns in a tussle over who would own the ring. After 4, Jim Trunzo, the ringside scorer, saw the bout 2-1-1 in favor of Shandel. The judges, polled after the match ended, saw it largely Slavin's match to lose. Round 5 changed everything. Round 5 was the last in the books for a match that will be forever remembered as one of the greatest in UoLBA history.

The round began with both fighters focused on eliminating the other. Within the first minute of the round, each had buckled the knees of the other and each believed in his own ability to end the match. We pick up the play by play mid round:

02:06 Slavin lets go with a hook but Chet Shandel blocks it and then he scores with a hook of his own!
02:19 Shandel lands a smashing cross!
02:19 Frank Slavin is hurt!
02:31 Shandel lands a right cross but Slavin turned with it, diluting some of its power.
02:35 Slavin's right eye is becoming more swollen and it's going to need controlled in order for Slavin to see properly out of it.
02:40 Both fighters launched hooks but Shandel's got there first! He digs a second hook to the body of Slavin.
02:49 * Shandel lands a violent shot under Slavin's ribcage and Slavin instantly drops down on both knees.
02:51 The count begins...
02:51 1... 5:37
02:52 2... 5:37
02:53 3... 5:37
02:54 4... 5:37
02:55 5... 5:37
02:56 6... 5:37
02:57 7... 5:37
02:58 8... 5:37
02:59 Slavin makes it to a knee at the count of 9 but he's still struggling to get his legs under him!
03:00 10! 5:37
03:00 * That's it! Slavin can't beat the count. Shandel wins this fight with a knockout.

Chet Shandel walks away the victor of the match, continuing his march up the ranks. His victory topples the second top five heavyweight this month, elevating him to 5th position in the UoLBA.

In other bouts,

On the undercard, Dominic McCaffrey, another fighter inching towards the top 10, found an unyielding challenger in Jack Welsh, who extracted a draw in 10 rounds. While two judges had the bout even, Welsh actually led on one judge's card and felt he won the match outright. McCaffrey was lucky to escape with a draw, but the draw drops him to 16th in the UoLBA.

Here are the complete results from tonight's fights:

October 21, 1890
HW: Chet Shandel 22-0-1 (12) KO5 Frank Slavin 23-3-0 (16)
HW: Dominic McCaffrey 23-0-0 (10) MDraw10 Jack Welsh 20-2-0 (2)
HW: Jake Kilrain 20-3-1 (2) TKO9 Fred Crossley 19-3-0 (10)
HW: Tom Allen 22-1-0 (12) TKO4 Al Greenfield 18-4-1 (8)

UoLBA announces Dwyer vs. Heenan II

BONNER SPRINGS, KS - The Universe of Leather Boxing Association announced today the rematch that everyone in the fight world has awaited. John J. Dwyer signed an agreement to fight John C. Heenan in a mandatory title bout next month at Forbes Field. "This is the match the people want," declared Dwyer, "and I will once again show them why I am the champion." Dwyer added, "Heenan is a fine heavyweight and a gentleman in his own right, but he will taste defeat just like he did in July."

Heenan, who has made no secret of his belief that Dwyer was ducking him since their July bout, replied "Dwyer knows he was lucky the first time we met. This time I will lick him. Mark my words."

Both fighters are said to be training hard for what is undoubtedly the most important match in the young history of the UoLBA. The complete fight cards for November will be released later today.

November 1890 Results from Exhibition Gardens

VANCOUVER - A very entertaining night of boxing tonight was topped by a close bout between top ten fighters Chet Shandel and McHenry Johnson. Shandel was ahead on all cards going into round twelve, when Johnson came out of nowhere to drop Shandel for a 9 count. From that point on, the crowd hung on every tick of the clock as Shandel staggered away from a weary but desperate Johnson. When the bell tolled ending the match, the crowd roared its approval and appreciate for the effort by both fighters. Shandel wins by majority decision.

The undercard featured an amazing bout between James "Captain" Dalton and undefeated slugger Peter Courtney. This was a highly anticipated match, and it did not disappoint, featuring no less than 7 knockdowns - 3 by Courtney and 4 by Dalton. The fight seesawed, and even as it looked like one fighter had taken control, the other would come back with a vengence. Round 1, Dalton knocks Courtney down in the first minute of the match. Courtney weathers the storm. Rounds 2-6, Courtney is the aggressor, putting the Captain in jeopardy time and again. Finally, in round 7, a wild right by Courtney catches Dalton flush and he drops for a 7 count. In round 8, Courtney headhunts Dalton, looking to end the match. Near the end of the round, a careless Courtney finds himself on the receiving end of a powerful Dalton hook, and he hits the canvas for a 2 count. Courtney is back in control in round 9, and a flurry of blows drops Dalton mid round for a 4 count. The Captain is barely upright when a wicked uppercut by Courtney sends him back to the canvas. Somehow, Dalton keeps his feet to last the round, but he doesn't look good going into round 10. Courtney builds a large lead in round 10, pounding Dalton at every turn in an attempt to end the match. Then, midway through round 10, Courtney walks into a Dalton right cross and drops like a rock. He's up by the count of 6, but looks badly hurt. Dalton chases a groggy Courtney and a left cross sends him to the ground again, this time for the 4 count. With over a minute left in the round, Courtney had an uphill battle just lasting the round, as one more knockdown would end the match. Dalton recognized this, headhunting a backpeddling foe. Somehow, Courtney lasts the round. By this point, both fighters are pretty much punched out. The last two rounds featured two warriors in a test of endurance. At the final bell, both Dalton and Courtney raised weary arms in victory to the loud applause of an appreciative audience. The fight cards were very close, as was expected given the tremendous effort exhibited by each fighter. As it turned out, Peter Courtney's narrow wins in the 11th and 12th rounds gave him the UD victory, 111 to 109 on each judge's scorecard.

In other results, Joe Goddard fought to a tough win over Toxie Hall, and Denver Ed Smith and Steve Taylor fight to a draw. Smith was ahead on all cards until an 8th round knockdown by Taylor earned him a draw.

Below are complete results from Exhibition Gardens in Vancouver:

November 12, 1890
HW: Chet Shandel 23-0-1 (13) MD12 McHenry Johnson 20-2-3 (7)
HW: Peter Courtney 24-0-0 (15) UD12 James Dalton 21-3-1 (13)

Big Fight Tonight! Dwyer vs. Heenan II

Tonight caps off an exciting month of action in the UoLBA with the matchup of the top two heavyweights in the world, John J. Dwyer and John C. Heenan, in a rematch for the UoLBA crown.

Both fighters come into the contest in top shape and at the height of their game. Heenan has continued to rock the UoLBA world since his stunning upset to Dwyer in June. Dwyer, for his part, was impressive in his single defense of the title against James Dalton in August.

Heenan, the American, has made this fight about national pride. With the bout scheduled to take place at Forbes Field, Heenan figures to be the favorite of most ringside fans. John Dwyer, who originally demanded the fight be scheduled in Vancouver's Exhibition Gardens, is a lifelong Canadian hailing from the far reaches of Newfoundland.

Most experts predict a close match, an even contest and a you-pick-em affair. The fight is not expected to go the distance - both fighters pack sledgehammer rights - and the winner is expected to be whoever gets in the last bomb.

After tonight's match, the landscape boasts a number of strong HW contenders. Perhaps the most impressive this year has been undefeated Chet Shandel, who rocketed up the ranks from #20 to #4 with consecutive wins over 3 top 10 heavyweights: Duncan McDonald, Frank Slavin and McHenry Johnson. Shandel has indicated his desire to make the next bout he fights be for the UoLBA championship.

Hasim Rahman has been in the top 5 for the entire year, and has earned consideration as another potential champion. Rahman's only career loss is a June TKO at the hands of John C. Heenan in the UoLBA tournament.

Peter Jackson, darling of many fight experts, has made a rapid ascension to his current position at number 7. The only blemish on Jackson's record is a 12 round UD loss to Rahman in the same tourney. Jackson will fight Roy Clark in tonight's Co-Feature bout.

And two other undefeated heavyweights appear destined for a title shot at some near future date: #8 Joe Coburn at 24-0-1, and #9 Peter Courtney at 25-0-0.

But tonight, it's all about Dwyer vs. Heenan II. Buckle your seatbelts. Tonight's contest will commence shortly!

Dwyer vs. Heenan II - continues

Rounds 2 and 3 are toss up rounds, with both fighters hitting the other early and often. By round 3, it is anyone's fight.

In round 4, Heenan dominates the action, and even though he does not drop his opponent, Heenan wins a 10-8 round on all three judges cards.

At the end of round 4, Heenan had won 3 of 4 rounds on all cards, and one by a 10-8 count. While it is anything but over, Heenan has carved out an advantage, and Dwyer is showing some wear. Round 5 in a moment.

Dwyer vs. Heenan II - rounds 5-10

Dwyer begins to surge in the middle rounds, winning at least 3 of the 5 rounds in the minds of most ringside eperts. By the end of round 10, it is a very close bout, within grasp of either fighter.

Many believed the fight would end before this point in the match, but at the beginning of round 11, both fighters are upright and unmarked, ready to close at the opening bell.

Dwyer vs. Heenan II - the End

Round 11 begins similarly to every other round of the match, with both fighters trading blows seemingly at will. To this point, no knockdown has occured.

Then, with just over one minute gone in the round, Heenan walks into a left hook by Dwyer and falls to the mat. He's up at the count of 4, and finishes the round without further incident.

Round 12 - Heenan comes back with a vengeance, rocking Dwyer several times but not dumping him to the canvas. Heenan wins the round big.

Round 13 - A close round, both fighters giving their best effort, knowing the bout is still in question.

Round 14 - Heenan has fought a valiant bout throughout, but the swelling to his right eye has become more noticeable with each passing round. It is becoming more of an issue as the fight continues. With 2 minutes gone in the round, a wild left blindsides Heenan and sends him to the canvas again for the second time in the contest, this time barely climbing to his feet at the count of 9. From this point forward, it was all Heenan cound do to hang on until the bell ending the round.

Round 15 - Heenan goes all out in a desperate effort to take back a fight he feels is slipping away. Heenan lands a number of bombs throughout the round, but Dwyer remains upright. The fight ends with both fighters battering the other.

In the end, both fighters remain standing, much to the surprise of just about everyone in attendance. The fighters hug each other in exhausted appreciation of the other's efforts. The fight goes to the cards, and the judges find unanimously for the winner, and defending champion, John J. Dwyer!
