Yeah, this is making the previous fire sale look like nothing. The Marlins are really going to be a sub-major league team. Expect inflated win totals for the rest of the NL East next year.

With Casey being moved to PIT, my guess is Cincy will clear their OF logjam by moving Dunn to first.

Marlins asked the Rangers for Ian Kinsler, Gerald Laird AND Eric Hurley for Juan Pierre. I'm sure Jon Daniels considered that deal for about two nanoseconds.

Well, so far they've only gotten rid of these starters:
#1 pitcher
first baseman
second baseman
third baseman
centerfielder

Who's next? Is there a way to place bets on this?

Can we divide the Marlins, Rockies, and Royals into their own division? I guess we'd need another team. Devil Rays seem logical, and that way we have two from each league. That would make last year's NL West look like some sort of super unbeatable division! Hmm... maybe I can just watch minor league ball somewhere else. And yes, I am revelling in the destruction of the Marlins (but sad knowing they will probably be very good again in a few years -- but happy knowing it will probably be somewhere else where I won't be inundated with information about them).

This should go in the Marlins offseason thread

Does one exist?

Hey, any chance Corey ends up in RF?

Cubs leadoff hitters combined to score 83 runs last year, good for 29th in MLB, ahead of only the Dodgers. As a team, the Cubs scored 702 runs, meaning the leadoff spot contributed 11.8% of the runs. By comparison, the Marlins' leadoff hitters scored 107 of 717 runs (14.9% of total, or 26.2% higher run contribution than the Cubs.) Juan Pierre scored 92 of those 107 leadoff runs for Florida, hitting .272/.322/.351 from the top of the order. While you need much higher OBP from your leadoff man, he still significantly outperformed the Cubs #1 hitters who combined for a paltry .245/.299/.358 line in 2005, bolstered by Jerry Hairston's solid if unspectacular .265/.344/.382 in 306 (of 689) leadoff at bats. Moreover, in the three previous season (2002-04) Pierre hit .303/.351/.381 in 1798 leadoff at bats (.303/.354/.378 in 2002 at bats overall). Considering he won't be 29 until next August, it's not unreasonable to think he could return to that form next season.

From the Cubs standpoint, they made this deal from their greatest strength in pitching prospect depth to fill a glaring need. Seems like a good deal to me.

He's better than Gary Matthews, Jr. or Laynce Nix. My annoyance with Pierre is related to his defensive woes. I'm glad he didn't come to Texas 'cuz we have plenty of those. How can someone this fast suck on defense?

Can I re-reiterate? Good move, (I hope) by the Cubs.

I'm more concerned about losing Ricky Nolasco, than Mitre. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into anotherDontrelle Willis deal.

He would have been more exposed by the massive gaps in the Ballpark as opposed to the less spacious friendly confines of Wrigley Field. I'm hopeful that will mitigate some of the defensive liability. There's still Jerry Hairston and maybe Corey Patterson for the late/close situations.

Even before this deal, I didn't think Korey would be a Cub on opening day, but I really do hope that he can be successful somewhere else. Maybe working with another hitting coach will help, and I think he'll benefit from a simple change of scenery. And we still have his little brother Eric...

I would like this deal if Pierre didn't suck ass.
