Danny Wofford
DANNY WOFFORD (photo in other thread)
Born - Columbia, SC Resides - Jacksonville, FL 17(10)-99-2 Wofford fought as a trial horse mainly in the South. He presented a decent workout generaly taking his opponent to the final bell. Danny did have one phoney title shot. The WBS sanctioned a bout between Wofford and Mitch Green to crown their Super Heavyweight Champion. Wofford dropped the "title" fight to Green by way of a twelve round decision. Some of his notable opponents include Joe Hipp, Orlin Norris, Alex Stewart, Oliver McCall, Michael Dokes, Bonecrusher Smith, Pinklon Thomas, Shannon Briggs, Trevor Berbick, Michael Grant and Tim Witherspoon. EDIT: Just a note about my stiff creation methodology. With some of these guys, I just rated them so they would almost always drop in the first few rounds. Some had a little tweaking based on some aspect that came through in their record. If you want to tweak them further, ok but I can't imagine what you would want to do with them. A guy like Wofford is a different case. I ran 5 sets of 900 bout tests which is far more than I useualy do. I ran 100 each against 5 decent opponents (McCall, Grant, et cetera) and 4 sets of 100 each against other stiffs (a few that he actualy fought) I was able to get his stoppage-to-loss ratio at about 20% which is just about right. However, he consistantly wins 20 to 25% of his bouts which is too high. No matter what I did, I could not get his win% and stoppage-to-loss% to both come out correct. I decided that for Wofford, it was more meaningful to ensure that he would go the distance at an appropriate rate when facing fair to better-than-average boxers while still losing almost all the time. I just decided to live with the extra wins he will collect over weak competition. I would be interested if anyone thinks differently about the ratings.

MARC MACHAIN (photo in other thread)
Born - Hartford, CT Resides - Rutland, VT 8(4)-19-0 Machain had a reasonably good start to his pro career in the Northeast that culmunated with a ten round unanimous decision loss to Paul Poirier for the New England Heavyweight Title. After that, Marc settled into the role of cannon fodder taking bouts mainly in Massachusetts with a few paydays in Europe to provide a test for Jukka Jarvinen and a few others. His only marginaly recognizable opponents were Tyrone Booze and Peter McNeeley.

HARRY FUNMAKER (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Fond du Lac, Wisconsin 17(6)-16-0 Funmaker was a plodding club fighter that tipped the scales around the 300 pound level by the end of his fourteen year career. Funmaker became increasingly immune to knockdowns and more powerful as he gained weight going 8(3)-3-0 over his final eleven bouts. Two of those final losses came at the hands of Orlin Norris and the busy big man Butterbean.

JOE SICILIANO (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Leominster, MA Siciliano was great at winning against guys wearing contact lenses and boxers named Miguel Ortiz. Joe opened his short career with a four round decision over Ortiz followed by a one-round thrashing by Peter McNeeley. This start was enough to "catapult" Joe to a Central Massachusetts Heavyweight Title Fight against Robert Pooler who was disqualified for wearing contact lenses in the ring. Joe succesfuly defended his back yard belt against Ortiz then suffered two first round stoppages in 2001. Unable to locate more opponents named Ortiz or foolish enough to forget about their contact lenses, Siciliano decided to hang 'em up.

JUAN QUINTANA (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Springfield, Massachusetts 7(3)-51-2 Quintana was a game fighter that provided a good workout for numerous Heavyweights in the New England area including Monte Barrett, Shannon Briggs, Donnovan Ruddock and Paul Poirier (Former New England HW Champ). Although he generaly lost, he was only stopped 16 times over 60 career fights which is not too bad when you consider that he was overmatched night in and night out.

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay
A new day.....
01/18/67 Wednesday Solihull, England Robin Webb – HW (2-0-0) vs. Derek Groombridge – HW (10-7-0) First of a couple fights here in Solihull we'll see... Robin Webb - Rating 1 UK Heavyweight 1866-67 3 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 1 KO Hometown: Southland, England Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Won his first three fights against Allen Heath, Barry Rodney and Derek Groombridge then lost by 1st round KO to Terry Feeley and then dissappeared from the boxing scene. Derek Groombridge - Rating 1 UK Heavyweight 1965-67 10 wins / 8 looses / 0 draws / 1 KO Hometown: Nottingham, England Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Another club fighter knocking it out around his native England for a short period against other area clubbers. Guys that he fought included wins over Vic Moore, Clive Tranter, Len Rocky James, and Tommy Woods. He lost to Len Rocky James, Rocky Campbell twice, Terry Daly and Robin Webb. Defeated a Pat Roach who was fighting his first and only professional bout, in January 1966 for something called the Novice Heavyweight Competition. Derek won a 3 round decision. A month later in the Semi-final round of this competition, Groombridge lost by TKO in the 3rd to Alex Kelly(4-2-0,3). The fight.... For both of this local club fighters here in England it’s near the end for both for careers going no where fast. In this 6 round bout, Webb ended up with the 6 round decision putting his record at 3-0-0, but it would turn out he’d have 1 more fight in him a little later in 1967. For Groombridge it did turn out to be the end as he hung up the gloves after this loss to Webb. Our replay result had a somewhat different result. Webb handled thing handily enough through the first 4 rounds with Groombridge not able to mount much of anything against Webb. Finally in the 5th, Groombridge managed to stage some bit of successful punching but it was too little too late. A minute into the 6th and finally round, Webb lands a hard body punch that puts Groombridge down for a 4 count. Then about a ½ minute later Webb lands a hard combination then quickly follows with a sharp jab. Then a smashing hook and another quick jab leaving Groombridge clearly hurt. Then with a ½ minute to go the referee somewhat surprisingly steps in and stops the fight! It’s a TKO victory for Webb at 2:30 in the 6th and final round. |

Over the next nine years, Dwayne fought and lost 16 bouts to competition that included Andrew Golata, Joe Mesi, Jorge Luis Gonzalez and Larry Donald.

PAUL POIRIER - New England HW
PAUL POIRIER
Hometown – New Bedford, MA 31(7)-3-0 Paul Poirier was one of the most promising New England boxers of the seventies. Poirier fought as a middleweight compiling a perfect 21-0 record from 1973 to 1975. (Boxrec incorrectly credits Paul with a loss during this period that was not one of his bouts.) He began boxing at the age of 16 which was below the legal age limit for professional boxing in Massachusetts. When his age was discovered, he was allowed to continue because it was determined that it would detrimental to his career to force him to sit out until reaching age 18. With such a promising future, it was a shock to the New England boxing community when Poirier, just shy of his eighteenth birthday, walked away from the sport due to his conversion as a Jehovah’s Witness. Fast forward fifteen years. At the age of 33, Poirier came back to the boxing scene as a heavyweight. At first, he dispatched 9 local club heavyweights with relative ease; collecting the New England Heavyweight Title along the way. Then on July 24, 1992 Paul suffered his first pro defeat in the form of a third round TKO to Alex Stewart in the Catskills. By then, his story had become known on a wider basis and Paul was finally able to secure a few decent paydays. Unfortunately, both were losses. Poirier fought Tony Tucker in November of 1992 at the Caesars Tahoe Casino and was stopped by TKO in round four. After one tune-up back in Foxboro, Paul took the biggest fight of his career. He faced Larry Holmes on May 18, 1993 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Poirier fought gamely, but succumbed to that still-potent Holmes jab in the seventh round. Paul was an interesting fighter and the fact that he was able to come back after a fifteen year lay-off and take the former champ to the seventh round will leave him and New England fight fans forever wondering what might have been. --- I have searched most of the New England sites that I know without any luck in finding a picture of Paul. I suspect that the most likely place to find one would be from the program when he fought Holmes in Mississippi. If anyone has a pic I would be greatful! CONN EDIT: Jofre found a pic (of course) it is posted over on the photo thread.

STANLEY WRIGHT (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Portland, Maine 12(12)-11-0 Wright put together a decent career for a local fighter. His main claim to fame was handing Peter McNeeley his first pro loss in a bout for the New England Heavyweight Title. That fight was stopped to due to cuts suffered by McNeeley and Wright promptly lost the title in a bout with the unimpressive Juan Quintana. He did however avenge the loss to Quintana with a sixth round KO in a later bout for the Massachusetts title. In search of a few bucks and resigned to his place within the heavyweight world order, Wright served as a record padder to Henry Akinwande and Michael Grant at the end of his career.

Hometown - Shawnee Mission, Kansas 28(17)-54-1 5 NC Boyd was a fairly active club fighter / trial horse fighting out of the Mid West. JERRY BARNES (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Jackson, Tennessee 0-19-0 With the exception of a points loss to Rodney Gordon and a disqualification in his second pro bout, Barnes was stopped every time he climbed into the ring. He lost to Peter McNeeley, Jukka Jarvinen, Greg Page and a host of even less recognizable fighters in his home state.

HAROLD REITMAN (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Plantation, Florida 11(9)-7-4 Reitman did alright for a guy who didn't step into the pro ring until the age of 39. He fought to a draw with Tim Anderson for the NBA Cruiserweight Title. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough talent or time to step above that level.

LARRY MENEFEE (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 10(5)-2-1 1 NC Menefee had a nice little club career going when he ran into his ceiling. Unfortunately for Larry, his ceiling was rather low (Lance Whitaker and Peter McNeeley).

By the way, I hope that I haven't offended anyone with some of the back-handed bios that I wrote for these tomato cans. I was just having a little fun.
I do have respect for all these guys. Anyone willing to step through the ropes with a heavyweight of any pro skill level has a set of marracas that I sure wasn't blessed with at birth. CONN

Gregorio (goyito) Rico
GREGORIO (GOYITO) RICO (no photo)
Hometown - Santiago, Cuba Rico was a Havana favorite, fighting for the Cuban Heavyweight Title ten times. He was 7-1-1 1NC in bouts for the Cuban belt, 4 of those fights were against Roleaux Saguero whom he faced a total of five times in his career. Rico's first trip outside the Havana fight scene was a mixed bag. He was defeated soundly by Sandy Casanova in Mexico City with the Mexican belt on the line. He rebounded a month later with ten round decision over journeyman Chuck Burns before returning to Cuba.
