The White Sox, at 89-66, sit in first place in the AL. New York had a runner on 1st in the top of the sixth. With no one out, Eddie Stanky stood at the plate, hoping to find a gap. 1950 World Series results
1950 World Series results: Chicago White Sox vs. Chicago Cubs
Results Game 1, October 5th, 1950, Comiskey Park White Sox Surge Past Cubs to Take 1-0 Series Lead The Chicago White Sox started the World Series in dramatic fashion, stealing Game 1 from the Chicago Cubs in a walk-off. Chicago won, 4-3, behind a good day from starter Vic Raschi. The right-hander threw 8.0 innings of 7-hit ball in the win, which gave the White Sox a 1-0 lead to start the best-of-7 series. Bill Howerton was the walk-off hero for Chicago. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the White Sox center fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home. "Things broke our way today and that's great," White Sox manager Jim Mosolf said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago. White Sox lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 6th, 1950, Comiskey Park Chicago Tops Chicago Again, 1-0 Sal Maglie pitched a gem to help the Chicago White Sox escape with a tight, 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs in a low-scoring World Series contest. The right-handed Maglie threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the White Sox on a day when their offense dried up. Chicago now leads the best-of-7 series 2-0. Chicago starter Sal Maglie was masterful. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits over 9 innings. "Sal made his pitches," said Chicago manager Jim Mosolf. The next game is set to be played on October 8th, 1950 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. White Sox lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 8th, 1950, Wrigley Field Cubs Hammered by Ennis, Fall Further Behind in WS Riding the 3-hit performance of right fielder Del Ennis, the Chicago White Sox got a road win against the Chicago Cubs, 8-6, in Game 3 of the World Series. Ennis was 3 for 4 with a home run, a triple, a double, and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 4 for the White Sox, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 0. In the top of the ninth, Ennis hit a tie-breaking 2-run home run to help the White Sox capture the win. Cubs manager Chief Chouneau did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Wrigley Field in Chicago. White Sox lead series 1-0 Game 4, October 9th, 1950, Wrigley Field World Series Sweep to White Sox The season came to a crashing halt for the Chicago Cubs when the Chicago White Sox beat them 5-2 today at Wrigley Field to sweep the World Series 4-0. Fans in Chicago have already begun the celebration, and officials are expecting huge numbers when the championship parade takes place in a few days. "Unbelievable for us, for our fans," an elated White Sox skipper Jim Mosolf said. "This team has worked as hard as any team ever. They deserve it. What these guys have done, they're going to enjoy for a long time." This was the 4th championship for the White Sox. After the game, Chicago manager Chief Chouneau was asked by reporters what it's like to lose in the World Series. "You want the results to be different," he said. "They simply outplayed us, they deserve it. They beat us. They're the champions." Chicago finished the season with a record of 89-66 and ranked first in the AL. White Sox win series 4-0 World Series MVP: P Lefty Sloat (Chicago White Sox) |
