My goodness gracious, I have really been through it the last week trying to get the NIRL going into the second season... I had a problem where the league schedule and League Events were out of synch.

I asked for help on the OOTP20 Discussions Forum and thankfully, reds1 came to my rescue and saved the NIRL.

After reworking the entire 12 teams three times and getting the same results... League Events out of synch with the League Schedule... I was at the end of my rope and was ready to throw in the towel... the North Island Recreational League was dead in the water so to speak.

But thanks to reds1... also help and advice from Gruber_Tagged_Him and Bluenoser… the NIRL is alive and well and ready to go for another glorious season.

NIRL SECOND DIVISION UP FOR GRABS
Just like the North Island First Division race, the Second Division is up for grabs, too... no clear-cut favorite... Kinston (15-15) looks to be the best of the returnees, along with Joliet (15-15)... West Chester (13-17) and Theodore (10-20) seem destined for the bottom of the barrel again... the big question is what effect the relegation of Avalon (10-20) and Wafford (12-18) will make to the balance of power?... is the First Division talent better than the Second Division?... we should get some indication this year.

Assessing the NIRL Second Division this year shows the offenses are fairly equal going into the season, based on last year's talent... rookie infusion could make a difference... Avalon, Kinston and Joliet have the best pitching... the other three teams are just mediocre at best... none of the teams stand out defensively.

The Joliet Green Giants (15-15) perked up their offense with the addition of rookie power hitter, left fielder Jim Calahan... and made the defense better with third baseman Bradley Stinson... Joliet has a fine starter, Mario Vespucci (6-2, 2.51 ERA)... but the Green Giants will have a tough time with Kinston... Vespucci gives them a slight edge on the hill... the best returning sticks are catcher Tim Lytle (.282 BA, 6 HR, 20 RBI/15 R), center fielder Zach McDonald (.320 BA, 15 RBI, 17 R, 8 SB) and first baseman Johnny Holt (.252 BA, 20 RBI, 9 R, 3 SB)... the Green Giants lost slick-fielding shortstop Jerry Jardin... he decided not to play this year... they will miss his Gold Glove defense (.987 FA)... rookie shortstop Bobby Knight might have a problem replacing the gifted Jardin in the field.

The Kinston Firebirds (15-15) looked to be much-improved at the plate with two newcomers... third baseman Johnny Andolino and shortstop Danny Brown, both are solid with the bats and with the gloves... the Firebirds were terrible defensively last year... Andy Meadows (8-13/3.39 ERA) returns as a dependable starter... better defense will make him better... Kinston has a fairly good group of hitters coming back in Matt Herting (.277 BA, 23 RBI), Sal Cuccinelli (.274 BA, 22 RBI), Fernando De Leon (.293 BA, 16 RBI) and Doyle Goodrich (.311 BA, 11 RBI).

Avalon's (10-20) strong point is starter Dan May (4-5, 2.53)... he greatly improved the Oldtimers in the last half of the season last year... May made them competitive with the likes of league powers Kofa (20-10), New Yerby(18-12) and Union Heights (16-14) in the First Division... Avalon has a good defense, but lacks offense... they only have two quality batters: Jason Alpert (.298 BA/5 HR, 15 RBI, 20 R) and Sam Molnar (.317 BA, 12 RBI, 10 R, 3 SB)... the Oldtimers have no standout rookies... they will depend almost totally on May, Alpert and Molnar... it's tough for a few guys to do it all.

The Wafford Eagles (12-18) didn't do much very well in 1950... they didn't impress with their hitting, pitching and fielding... right fielder Eddie Dixon (.273 BA, 10 RBI, 13 R, 4 SB), left fielder Joseph Bates (.222 BA, 5 HR, 17 RBI, 12 R) and catcher Chase Hibbard (.267 BA, 12 RBI, 10 R) were the best hitter of the litter at the plate... Rick England (4-7, 4.40 ERA) and Ron Myles (5-1, 4.24 ERA) and Brian Walter (1-3, 2.53 ERA) shared the pitching load last year... Walter will begin the season as the top starter... he pitched well in the second half last year... rookie first sacker Frankie Lentini should help the offense.... and rookie third baseman Bobby Duvall looks to be a vast improvement to the defense... both he and Lentini can go deep.

The West Chester Comets (13-17) look pretty much like the same old mediocre club... rookie shortstop Chris Cox will make them a little better defensively over last year, but he is not much with the bat... no help is forecast from the other two so-so rookies... returning starter Dusty Pringle (5-3, 2.38 ERA) will get his chance on the mound... he will be backed up by Cloyd Benton (7-10, 3.99 ERA), last year's main starter... and by new mound addition, 20-year-old Ben Ellis... the prime bats are back for another year: first sacker Lynn Burgess (.270 BA, 24 RBI, 13 R, 6 SB), left fielder Derrick Davis (.273 BA, 18 RBI, 20 R, 10 SB) and right fielder Vic Corelli (.301 BA, 10 RBI,20 R, 3 SB).

Though they are better, it could be the NIRL Second Division basement two years running for the Theodore Bobcats (10-20)... rookie Bobby Brunow with his strong bat will take over first base duties... and 19-year-old hurler and hitter Cameron Keltz will get his chance to show his stuff... he is also going to play some infield... the most productive run producers from last season are returning, led by second basemen Justin Hines (.310 BA, 3 HR, 21 RBI, 20 R, 4 SB), right fielder Ivan Orsak (.299 BA, 18 RBI, 11 R), left fielder Larry Peck (.301 BA, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 12 R) and center fielder Caleb Carson (.241 BA, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 25 R, 19 SB)... Theodore really needs some help on the hill... Cliff Young (7-12, 3.92) is the main starter and will be backed up by Charley Pride (1-3, 4.78 ERA) and the rookie Keltz.

So here goes: this is the outlook for the NIRL Second Division:
1. JOLIET GREEN GIANTS
2. Kinston Firebirds
3. Avalon Oldtimers
4. Wafford Eagles
5. West Chester Comets
6. Theodore Bobcats

The wooden spoon for my Bobcats again? Keltz is going to be the future of the team, mark my words...

Hoping for a great two-way, or even three-way battle again in the NIRL 2D this year. Dutton had it a bit too easy last time round.

Agree with you... should be a tight race between Joliet, Kinston and maybe Avalon... the Oldtimers just have too much trouble scoring runs... but May is a solid pitcher.

NI FIRST OPENS NEW SEASON
The North Island Recreational League is back in business with it second season of baseball... and with a twist... two of the best teams in the NIRL Second Division were promoted up to the First Division and both were winners on the opening day of play Sunday afternoon.

The Jackson Jackalopes rung up a great victory in its opener, whipping last year's champion, the powerful Kofa Kings 2-0... the Jacks were second in the Second Division last year... the winner of that division, the Dutton Coyotes also were also victorious, blanking the Union Heights Hackers 4-0... and in a battle of returning clubs, New Yerby stopped the Stockdale Mustangs 4-1.

So it appears the First Division has added some muscle with the new two clubs... looks like the interlopers will make it quite interesting this season.

NI SECOND WELCOMES NEW TEAMS
The North Island Recreational League Second Division lost their two best teams to the First Division and gained two of the league's lesser lights... in action yesterday afternoon one of the newcomers spoiled opening day festivities at Joliet Stadium... the Avalon Oldtimers held on for a 7-6 victory over the hometown Joliet Green Giants... however, the returning West Chester Comets were not quite as hospitable to the other new team, the Wafford Eagles... the Comets nipped them 3-2 at home at Township Park... in the third contest, returning Kinston and Theodore met at Bobcat Field with Theodore coming away with a 4-0 win.
