1st July The Boston Red Caps poor season continued in June to leave the fans frustrated. The team picked up only 5 wins from the 14 games played. This has left them in 3rd place in the AL table 11 games behind the leading White Stockings The battings struggles continued in June as they posted only 48 runs in total. The best batter for the month was Catcher Lew Brown. Brown started all 14 games and came to the plate 57 times. These plate appearances saw him hit the ball 17 times to score 7 runs and 8 RBI's for an average of .298. The pitching tried it's hardest but couldn't counter the lack of runs from the bat. The best of the pitching came from Tommy Bond. Bond started 7 games and picked up 3 wins from 63 innings pitched. He gave up 53 hits and 13 earned runs for an ERA of 1.86. The team gave up a total of 60 runs. Claimed Second Baseman Davey Force from the Brooklyn Atlantics off waivers. Traded 30 year old Third Baseman Ezra Sutton and 24 year old minor league Second Baseman Bill Fouser to the Chicago White Stockings in exchange for 31 year old Right Fielder Clipper Flynn. The fans are sad to see Sutton go as he has been a mainstay of the side since the start. The fans are also not sure Clipper Flynn is exactly what the team needs as a replacement. 1st July If the Atlantics fans were frustrated and angry after last month. Their mood after June was positivly fuming and they didn't hold back in telling the players so from the stands. The team had another awful month with only 4 games won out of 14 played. This has left them continuing to prop up the NL table with a deficit of 14 games to the leaders. The batting put up very few good performances during the month as they scored 55 runs. The batter who played the best was Third Baseman Tom Burns. Burns started all 14 games for 55 at bats. These at bats earned him 19 hits to score 6 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .345 The ptiching was spread over 4 starters during the monht as they all suffered from poor form. The best came from Joe Blong. Blong started 3 games and picked up 1 win from the 24 innings he pitched. He gave up 29 hits and 5 earned runs for an ERA of 1.88. The team gave up 78 runs in total. 1st July The fans of the White Stockings saw them continue their push for the NL pennant in June. The team picked up 9 wins from the 14 games played. They now sit top of the NL but their lead has again been trimmed. This time down to only 1 game. The batting went on a run spree in June as they hit 86 runs. The star with the hot bat during the month was Right Fielder Harvey Stovey. Stovey started all 14 games and claimed 20 hits from 59 at bats. This gave him an average of .339 along with 14 runs and 11 RBI's scored. The NL voters decided he should be awarded the NL Batter of the Month award for these figures. The pitching also contributed to the excellent form of the White Stockings team. Bill McGunnigle was once again the star on the mound as he picked up 6 wins from 7 starts with 59.1 innings pitched. He gave up 62 hits and 13 earned runs for an ERA of 1.97. He earned the Rookie of the Month award for the NL. The team gave up 65 runs in total. The White Stockings were very active in the player market this month It started with the trading of 31 year old Right Fielder Clipper Flynn to the Boston Red Caps in exchange for the 30 year old Third Baseman Ezra Sutton and 24 year old minor league Second Baseman Bill Fouser. The fans are excited to see what Sutton can do wearing a White Stockings jersey after suffering a few time at his hand when playing for Boston. The team picked up 10 wins in June with only 4 losses. They now sit only 1 game behind the leaders in the NL table. The reason for excellent form of the Reds in June was down to how well the pitching played. The best of the starters was Monte Ward again. Ward started 7 games and picked up 6 wins behind his 66 innings pitched. He gave up 49 hits and only 8 earned runs for an ERA of 1.09. This earned him the NL Pitcher of the Month award for June. The team gave up a total of 48 runs The batting did enough to help gain the wins as they scored 56 runs. The batter with the best form was Short Stop Arthur Irwin. Irwin came to the plate 55 times in 14 game starts to hit the ball 18 times. The team went on an amazing run to win 11 of the 13 games they played in June. This has left them top of the AL table 8 games clear of their nearest rivals. Jim McCormick had an excellent month on the mound as every game he started resulted in a win for both himself and the team. He started 7 games for 7 wins while pitching 66 innings. June did not give them that turn around they were hoping for as the team won only 5 of the 13 games played. They now sit bottom of the AL table 13 games from the leaders and 4 games behind 3rd place. The batting was up and down over the month as it scored 55 runs. The batter with the best figures was star Centre Fielder Paul Hines. Hines went to bat 52 times in 13 game starts to pick up 18 hits. These hits produced 6 runs and 4 RBI's for an average of .346 The pitching tried its best during the month but was a little wayward. The best came from starter Tom Healey. The star with the hot bat during the month was Second Baseman Henry Luff. Luff started 12 of the 13 games and had 53 at bats. The team continue to be the prop holding all the other teams up in the NL table as they sit 17 games behind the leaders. The batting was very up and down all month to score 58 runs. The batter in the best form during the month was First Baseman Oscar Walker. Walker came up to bat 45 times in 12 game starts to hit the ball 15 times. He scored 5 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .333 The pitching had a shot in the arm from the new starter George Zettlien even if his ERA was poor. Zettlien started 6 games, winning 4, in which he pitched 50.1 innings. These work saw him give up 62 hits and 25 earned runs for an ERA of 4.47. The team gave up a total of 63 runs.
