Other News:

GM Notes:
I can't tell you how bummed I am about the injury to Mauro Candelaria. I want to keep him around, but I hope he denies the player option. I don't see him making more than 6 mil on the open market especially as oft injured as he has been. He has been one of my favorite players and the face of the Cavaliers since 2013 one of only 2 remaining players from the opening day roster 2013. Its sad to watch him fade, was hoping he would go out with a blaze of glory.

Its cool watching Francisco Gallegos get his swing back. His average is now up to .296 and eventhough he only has 6 HR's he is leading the league with 35 doubles. Including one in each game this week. He will approach the 2B record of 50, but I assume he will fall short. He reminds me a lot of a kid named King Brock when he first came up.

Jeff Lewis is having such a solid season, and he is doing it very quietly. Currently he is hitting .341-10-47, yet no one would ever know it. He goes about his business quietly and leads by example. I think he should get more accolades for the way he plays, but his quite demeanor keeps him from being in the front. Its fun having his consistency on the team.

Javier Janchez (.277-7-32, 20 SB) and Sergio Galvez (.275-11-57, 19 SB) have made for a nice 1-2 punch over the past couple of months. Both players went through an early season benching since neither one really seemed to want to start, but it looks like after all this team I made the right choice. Galvez is on pace to drive in over 100 and he is only going to get better and Janchez has only 2 errors in the outfield this season and at 23 is enjoying a break out year. With Jeff Lewis this has to be one of the best outfields, defensively and offensively in the league.

It took us 91 games to finally play an extra inning game, and I have to say I don't mind not playing them. Last season we couldn't seem to win one and this year we just don't have them. I like not having them more, way better on the pitching staff. I wonder if this will open up the flood gates or was it a fluke...

Trade deadline is approaching and I think I am going to stand still. The only movement would be for a 2B to replace Dooley since Candelaria is out yet again. One thing I may end up doing is bringing up Bernardo Velez, he is hitting over .300 in AAA. Is he ready? He may end up being our starter in 2022 and I'd hate to ruin is ROY chances by playing him now. Maybe Reyes is ready to come back up... That could mean Julio Saldana is available for trade. He didn't sign last season, sat out all of 2020 and has been really impressive this year. Maybe exploring that will make sense.

Around the League:
Standings Leaders
DE Southern: Lewes Braves 54-38 (+7)
DE Northern: Milford Clippers 54-38 (+5)
MV Eastern: Ocean City Tourists 57-35 (+1)
MV Western: Norfolk Cavaliers 65-27 (+21) *14 game winning streak

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Peter Peters, New Castle Colonails, 7-15, 2 HR's, 4 RBIs
MarVa: Enrique Macias, Salisbury Ports, 8-9, 3 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (151.2)
2) Baltimore Barons (110.6)
3) Annapolis Admirals (109.8)
4) Lewes Braves (108.7)
5) Ocean City Tourists (108.5)

News:
  • The rumors out of Richmond are that middle man Steve McClellan isn't happy and is ready for a change of scenery. McClellan was traded to Richmond from Ellicott City during this past off-season, after the first year of a 3-year deal. The two time All-Star hasn't been the same since an arm injury cut his 2018 season short. This year he is 1-2 4.85 with 7 saves in 40 games.
  • Leonard Davis of the Lewes Braves will miss 4-5 weeks thanks to a fractured finger. The Braves will miss the big-bat of Davis. Davis was hitting .290-19-46 on the season, he should return ready to help the Braves finish the play-off run.
  • The Annapolis Admirals who are in rebuilding phase acquired 34-yr-old SP Carlos Torres (7-9 5.75) from the Washington Senators for back-up OF Miguel Ruiz (.253-7-23). Ruiz is signed for 2 more years and Torres will be a free agent at the end of the year, both players make a little over $8,500,000 per year.
  • The Washington Senators are slumping an dhtey are looking for a spark. Sometimes trading away a fan favorite works and sometimes it doesn't. Derek Campbell (.221-17-44) was slumping this year, and starting to cost too much for the Senators, so they shipped him off to the Chesapeake Blue Crabs in exchange for 34-year old catcher Roberto Villalobos (.268-5-13). Villalobos is signed for 4 more years and the Senators are hoping he can return to his 2020 form. The change of scenery should help both players.

Personal Note: Grad school is starting up again, so the next 6 weeks might not be as active as I have been... I am not giving up on this year or dynasty.

GM Notes:
The 15-game winning streak brought the fans out in droves and was a top league headline, the Cavaliers have a fan interest of 99 now, a jump of 4 from last week. I am not sure it has ever been this good here. We are riding high hopefully we can continue this.

Last week I made a comparison of Francisco Gallegos to King Brock and how similiar their first full season have been. Gallegos started off a lot slower this year and Brock had more offensive power on his team, but overall they are doing pretty close to each other, less the power numbers. Gallegos will never have the HR power of Brock, but if this season is any indication of what lies ahead then I am happy I decided to keep him over Yann. Here is a look at Brocks first full year and Gallego's predicted season totals:

Brock (2018): .305-27-137 49 doubles 114 runs
Gallegos (2021): .308-11-69 61 doubles 67 runs

Miguel Contreras started his 20th game of the season this week, with 4 more starts the vesting option will kick in and he will be our ace once again. I am not sure I will try to extend him or if I will let him walk, it will be a tough call. I have a lot of kids in the minors that are ready to go and cost a lot less, they aren't nearly as talented as Miguel, but at 34 a down fall is going to happen, its just a matter of when.

Its good to see Dalton Whitaker get on a hot streak, he must of heard the talk about him getting removed from the closer role. I wasn't ready to demote him from his closer role, but would have out of necessity. He has hopefully righted his ship for the rest of the season. In 10 July games he has yet to give up an earned run, and has lowered his ERA to 3.96 amost to where it was last season. He should hit his 40 save goal, however his strikeouts are way down.

I want to find someone who hits the long ball. I miss having that "guy" in the middle of the lineup. Francisco Reyes gave this team something we have never had I think he spoiled me. Even our minor league teams are missing the power aspect. Shows how little I value HR power. Not sure if thats a good thing or not.

Around the League:
Standings Leaders
DE Southern: Lewes Braves 57-42 (+6)
DE Northern: Milford Clippers 57-42 (+6)
MV Eastern: Ocean City Tourists/Baltimore Barons 61-38 (+7)
MV Western: Norfolk Cavaliers 70-29 (+23)

Players of the Week:
Delaware: George Corbett, Wilmington Iron Pigs, 15-30, 3 HR's, 7 RBIs
MarVa: Will Riley, Ellicott City Express, 12-23, 4 HR's, 13 RBIs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (135.3)
2) Baltimore Barons (117.9)
3) Ocean City Tourists (113.9)
4) Milford Clippers (102.6)
5) Lewes Braves (102.6)

News:
  • The Dover Generals will be without Morris Sinclair for the next 6-7 weeks. The 40-yr-old-2b tore his quad running the bases. Morris was hitting .257-8-24 on the season.
  • The Richmond Cardinals traded young outfielder Xue-qin Xu (.253-12-30) to the Chesapeake Blue Crabs for 2B Tim Simmons (.307-11-51). Simmons is a free agent at the end of the year making $8,500,000 it will be interseting to see if the Cardinals try to extend him or let his salary go.
  • James McLaughlin is out 3-weeks with a strained hamstring. McLaughlin is 5-8 6.01 ERA on the season. Is this a blow to the Tourists or a blessing in the middle of pennent race?
  • The Blue Jays are looking for some offense to make a run at the Braves and they hope Reynaldo Peralta (.331-8-43) is worth it. Peralta was acquired from the Ellicott City Express for 3 minor leaguers: Kirby Nixon (#242), Robbie Numbers and Hasan Elezi.
  • The Baltimore Barons will be without one of the strong middle-man Norris Brooks for the next 8-9 months after Brocks fractured his elbow. Brooks was 2-0 3.74 in 19 games this year.
  • Herminio Bovay is at it again, hitting in 20 straight games.
  • The Richmond Cardinals and the Ellicott City Express made a rare inter-division deal. The Cardinals received 34-yr-old MR Nick Gilbert (3-5 5.23, 40 G), outfield prospect Edgar Baez (#39) and $3,000,000, and all it cost them was 34-year-old journeyman 3B Pat Shelton (.313-4-17). This is an obvious salary dump by the Express, as they start to look forward to next season.
  • Ricardo Flores the starting catcher for the Richmond Cardinals will miss 6 weeks with back spasms. Flores is having a solid year, when he has been healthy, hitting .297-11-37.
  • John Bean has suffered a set-back from a sprained wrist and will miss another week. Bean is hitting .296-11-40, which most people have considered an off-year for him.
  • After 1/2 a year in Ellicott City, Tony Soto is on the move, along with $3,000,000 to the Chesapeake Blue Crabs, in return for 2 minor leaguers. Soto was set to be a free-agent in 2021, this deal doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Milestone:
Number 300 for Peters: Swinging his way into the record books, Peter Peters reached the 300 homer mark today at Colonials Stadium against the Salisbury Ports. He went 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs on the day, although New Castle would go down to defeat 5-4. "It was a distraction," Peters said of his 300th home run, "I'm happy it's over. I just wish I'd been able to make a difference in the outcome today." It took Peters 5 games and 21 at-bats to hit #300.

July 2021 - Month in Review

Delaware Conference Monthly Awards

Peters Gets DEConf Batter of the Month Trophy: Peter Peters battered Delaware Conference pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Peters told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 24 games, Peters hit .333 with 6 home runs, 15 RBIs and scored 21 runs. So far this season Peters is batting .320 with 23 home runs.

Delaware Conference Announces Best Starter: José Matos's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in July, the 34-year-old Milford hurler has been named Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 30 in 44.1 innings, logged an ERA of 1.02 and allowed opponents to hit .193 against him. On the year Matos has compiled a 13-4 mark with a 2.30 ERA.

Delaware Conference Names Rookie of Month: Dan Riddell is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In July the Christiana hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .310 average with 26 hits, 1 home run and 10 RBIs. Looking at his present stats, Riddell has compiled a .252 batting average in 85 games with a .302 on-base percentage, while hitting 1 home run and driving in 28 runs.

MarVa Conference Monthly Awards

Riley Brings Home MVConf Batter of Month Honor: Beach balls were coming in at Will Riley in July and he banged, bashed and blasted them all over the park, putting up a .435 batting average and hauling in the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month trophy. The 26-year-old Ellicott City catcher collected 37 hits last month in 23 games. He put up 10 home runs, 34 RBIs and 26 runs scored. Riley also drew 13 walks and compiled a .510 on-base percentage. This season in 94 games, Riley has hit at a .365 clip with 129 hits, 26 home runs, 87 RBIs and 78 runs scored.

Pearson Chosen July's Best MVConf Hurler: Cornell Pearson took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month award for July. The 24-year-old Cavaliers starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 5-0 won-lost record in 5 starts. This month he fanned 24 batters in 39 innings and compiled a 1.38 ERA. In pitching stats this season Pearson has rung up 11 wins and 5 losses in 21 games. He has an ERA of 2.70 and has fanned 112 batters in 140 innings.

Silva Voted July's Top MVConf Rookie: The MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month has been picked for July and the honor went to the Ocean City Tourists hitting machine, Augusto Silva. During the last month he compiled a .326 batting average with 31 hits and 5 home runs, along with 17 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Currently Silva has 18 home runs and a .318 batting average.

Delaware Conference League Leaders

End of the Year Award Front Runners:
Silver Slugger: Peter Peters, Francisco Reyes
Golden Arm: Jose Matos, Jorge Padilla, Cristobal Diaz
Newcomer: Wiley Brown, RJ Brandon, Tim Leonard

MarVa Conference League Leaders

End of the Year Award Front Runners:
Silver Slugger: Will Riley, Jeff Lewis, Richard Taylor
Golden Arm: Miguel Contrears, Matt Hollis, Marcos Estrada
Newcomer: Augusto Silva, Armando Lopez

Standings as of August 1, 2021

The Blue Jays dream season collapsed in August falling to under .500 and back 8 games. The Dover Generals are slowing trying to claw their way back in. The Braves hold the lead, but with a couple of key injuries the door may be open for the Generals or Brewers to make a run.

The Clippers extended their lead by 3 games in July, as the Millers and Colonials continued to slump. This division should be won by the Clippers this season, but don't tell the Colonials that as they believe they have a run in them, despite missing their ace for the rest of the season.

The battle that has been the most fun this year is the one between the Barons and the Tourists. The Barons bounced back after a slow June to reclaim the top spot in the Eastern Division, but don't count the Tourists out just yet. There are still a lot of ball games left.

After a slow early season the Cavaliers have pulled away with the division. The Cavaliers could put an end to the end of the race September 1st, but they have to maintain the way they have played and remain healthy.

Norfolk Cavaliers - July 2021 Recap

The team came together for an incredible month, going 21-4. I am not sure if I have seen a month like that with this team and I surely didn't expect it with this young team. This team isn't the best team that I have had in Norfolk, but they have to be one of the most impressive. Our pitching has been amazing yet again and we now have a team ERA under 3.00, quite impressive. I am looking for August and the end of the season... so far we have been pretty healthy and that is something that I hope we can maintin for the rest of the season (fingers crossed).

The offense continues to pick up the guys who slump, which is a nice thing to have. Anderson and Brock had off months, but Gallegos and Dooley coverend them. Its been like that all year. I consider that pretty lucky, becuase you usually hit a point where everyone is slumping or everyone is hot. Not with this team, they just keep taking turns alternating who is carrying the team.

Pitching, pitching, pitching is the theme of this team and wow was this month another impressive month. Derek Carter has been amazing lately, Dalton Whitaker seems to be back on track, The starters have been lights out. The only concern I have with the staff is Lopez, who seems to have hit a wall lately. I may have to have Griffith take a start or two from him over the next few months just to keep him rested and fresh.

Injuries:
Mauro Candelara, Strained Adominal muscle, 2 weeks
Ramon Granados, Quad strain, 4 weeks

Other News:
CF Ramon Granados will miss the next 5 weeks with a quad strain he sustained in the first game of the Ellicott City series. Granados starts against lefties and is is the back out LF and CF against righties. He has put together a solid season so far this year hitting .270-6-20 in 65 games. He will be placed on the 11-day DL. To take Granados roster slot we will be calling up Tom Dundee. Tom Dundee is 22-years old and is having a MVP type season in AAA (.316-33-93). He will be with us for 5-6 weeks and them sent back down once Granados or Candelaria are ready. To make room on the 40-man roster for Dundee, Chris Brownwell was wavied and DFA'd. Brownwell has been awful this year (2-8 7.16) and shouldn't be claimed, although we won't mind if he is.

After Armando Lopez's rough start against the Express I moved him to the bullpen to allow Vaughan Griffith to take his slot in the rotation next time through. Lopez is a rookie and has thrown 123.0 Innings so far this season. Last time I gave him a break he came back better, so hopefully it will work again.

Tom Dundee's debut (0-4): Lined out to short on a 0-1 pitch (Daniel Wilson). Grounded into a 6-4-3 on the first pitch he saw (Daniel Wilson). Popped out to shallow right on a 1-0 pitch (Randy Pearce). Leading off the 9th on a 1-2 pitch, he flew out to shallow right (Ismael Ayala). A very non-eventful first game. His first time at-bats Pete Alexander was on first.

GM Notes:
I started the week by looking for deals for Denny Dooley, there were a couple of some intersting ones, but then it dawned on me. He doens't get paid much and if I can get him to learn some 3B he would make a great utility man. I carried Cody Johnson around for years just because he played 5-positions. I think Dooley is right there with Cody, but with more talent. It is possible that Dooley will end up a starter one day, as long as he hits the ball and he does have the talent to do so.

Before last season I was looking for a solid-backup catcher and I pulled off a trade with the Wilmington Iron Pigs sending Shawn Brock, and receiving John O'Donegan. John was my back up, Ed Duke was my starter, about half way through the season I shipped away Duke, why? Because O'Donegan all of a sudden was a player. Now as the full-time starting catcher he is putting up numbers that resemble Duke's best years. Hopefully this isn't just a flash in the pan. Set to hit arbitration at the end of the season, we reached out and offered John a 4-year deal. We still have 2 young kids that will be ready soon (1-3 years), but John is going to be our man for the this year and the foreseeable future.

I hope this doesn't jinx anything, but Francisco Gallegos has been a doubles machine. the record for 2B's in a season is held by Jonahtan Cook with 50, set way back in 2013. King Brock came close in 2018 with 49 and Denny Dooley made a run in 2019 with 48, but this year Gallegos is on fire and creeping up the leader board. Gallegos sits at 39 with 2 months to go, and is on pace for 60. Can he do it? Everyone in Norfolk will be watching, as the Cav's run away with the division it will keep the fans interested.

One thing I will try to do this week is get Tom Dundee some more swings. I am not sure why he has only played in 1 game this year. He an Janchez should be splitting more time. I don't know if he will hit at this level, but he was crushing in AAA and I was hoping that would carry over to here.

I hope this team isn't just going through a really hot phase, hopefully there is some substance to the way they have been playing. Last year I complained how I just didn't like the team, this year things have been really different. These guys are fun, young, I like the players, everything. Not sure what the difference but there is one.

News:
  • 37-year old Billy Moore, one of the games premiere power hitters during his prime, is asking Ellicott City to play him or trade him. After hitting 36 HR's last season, with the Milford Clippers, Moore signed a 2-yr deal with the Ellicott City Express. And 100 games into this season Moore has only played in 37 of them, hitting .256-4-14, and he is not happy about it.
  • Paul Miller and the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs had a short and not successful relationship. The GM was brought in last season for the final 15 games (5-10) and made a promise that they Dawgs would be better this year. Well after 102 games and a .294 WPct (30-72), owner Dan Foster had enough and let him go. Foster is known to be very controlling.
  • The same day, hours later, Dan Foster also fired their Manager Jorge Zambrano. Zambrano came aboard with Miller last year and has had a solid managerial career (595-577), which includes taking the Ocean City Tourists to the playoffs in 2014.
  • Ocean City is looking take the division this year and they hope the acquisition of MR Mike Hanson (2-1 4.50, 3 SV, 43 G) from the Annapolis Admirals will help. In return the Tourists are saying good bye to 2-19-yr olds Mauro Perez and Neil Middlebrooks.
  • The 'Bandit' is at it again. Herminio Bovay has extended his hit-streak to 25 games and his now hitting .377 on the season. This is the 2nd 25+ hit streak for Bovay, who set a personal best, hitting in 26 earlier this season.

Other News:
Dan Nelson allowed a run for the first time since May 24th, which was a span of 10 games and 15.2 innings. H has appeared in 15 games and 22 innings on the season. The bullpen just isn't utilized enough with the way the starters have been pitching.

John O'Donegan and the Cavaliers came to an agreement on a 4-yr deal that will carry him through his arbitration years. The Arbitration Estimate for John was over $6 million and has gone up to over $8 million so this deal could be a huge money saver. The Cav's and O'Donegan agreed to a 4 year deal worth $23,800,000, keeping O'Donegan in Norfolk till he is 31 years old. If he keeps playing like he has this season this could be a great steal.
Y1: $3,950,000, Y2: $5,950,000, Y3 & Y4: $6,950,000

Miguel Contrears is scheduled to make start 23 and 24 of the season during the upcoming week. Start 24 would kick in a vesting option keeping him in Norfolk for one more year @ $15,100,000.

GM Notes:
I am a little torn on what to do with Armando Lopez. I think he made need to be shut down for a while. His last 2 starts he has given up 15 runs in 4 innings. Maybe I will shift him back to the pen and get Vaughan some starts. Or I could think about bringing up a kid from the minors... I think Vaughan can do the job and then I will have to revisit the pen and stuff when it comes to the off season. For the time being Vaughan Griffith is now my #5 man.

Dalton Whitaker seems to have found his stuff again, after an AWFUL June. Last month he posted a 0.79 ERA with 7 saves and so far in August he has 2 saves without giving up any runs. This is, however, shaping up to be one his worst strikeout seasons. The last time he struck out under 96 was in 2013 when he struck out 73. This season he is on pace for only 77. His K/9 is 11.51, it hasn't been under 12.52 since that 2013 season when he was 10.27. It doesn't seem like he lost any speed or movement, so maybe its just one of those things. Dalton has 1 more year on his contract after this and it will be very hard for me not to resign him.

I am looking for September so I can call up Paul Brown. He has been awesome this year in AAA and would be in the rotation of any other team in the league. The best part is, his control finally hit 10. once it gets to 13 (hopefully it does) he will be this teams ace, replacing Contreras and Hollis in 3-4 years.

News:
  • Martin Allen of the Wilmington Iron Pigs will miss 4-5 months after tearing his calf muscle last week. Allen was hitting .255-7-37 on the season.
  • Ryan Carson of the Washington Senators will miss 6 months with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. Carson struggled during his rookie campaign going 1-7 8.08 in 16 games/9 starts.
  • The ageing star Glenn Jenkins (Ellicott City) will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his finger. Jenkins has been injury plagued all year playing in only 77 games, hitting .294-7-52.
  • Rookie catcher Jorge Hernandez of the Newark Millers will miss 8-9 months after suffering a concussion. After hitting .313-11-74 last season his Newcomer of the Year award winning campaign, Jorge has struggled this season only hitting .229-2-22 in limited time.
  • Stan Miller of the Georgetown Sixteens won the player of the week award this week, but he won't be able to win it again for another 5 after suffering a hamstring strain. Miller is hitting .258-22-62 on the season.

Profile: Sun Ho

I have been enjoying this season, the group of guys here have made for some interesting stats, games, etc. It makes me curious of what the future will bring, in regards to trades, signings, and who will be the next "face" of Norfolk.

As I was looking over this team, I started to think back about some earlier years, and players. One guy I decided to look up was Sun Ho.

Sun Ho was destined for greatness... In 2013, the 24-year old, was drafted by the Richmond Cardinals in the 20th round of the inaugural draft, and named the #53 prospect in the DBL. During the first month of that season he was traded from the Cardinals to the Norfolk Cavaliers, in what may have been on of the best "steals" of all time. Coming along with Ho was King Brock and leaving were two guys who wound up being journeyman for the rest of the careers. The are still active in the minors today, hoping for one more chance: Danny Rigsby and Rafael Delgado.

The Cavaliers were looking forward to the future in acquiring these two kids. The Cavaliers were looking to build up their minor league system so this was a big trade. Ho came with pretty solid ratings (Stuff: 9/10, Movement: 12/14, Control: 12/12) and got to see some time with the Cavaliers later that season. In 6 starts in 2013 Ho struggled going 0-3 with a 7.59 ERA.

I remember Ho and I really thought he was going to turn into a solid starter and last a long time to come in my rotation as the #3 or 4 man. After struggling in 2013, Ho spent most of 2014 down in AAA. In September he let everyone know what he was capable throwing the 2nd ever no-hitter in DBL history. He finished 2014 with 3 solid starts (2-1 2.42), and the excitement of the future was blossoming.

In 2015, he made the rotation out of spring on because of an injury to Geoffry Bayles, who was slotted in as our #5 man. Ho threw the ball pretty good, but when Bayles was ready to come back, Ho was the odd man out. Even though Ho had a decent summer he was sent back down to AAA to get some more starts. In September Bayles went down again and Ho was back in the rotation to finish the season. He ended up going 8-8 3.95, but it was far from the "blow-out" season I was expecting after his late 2014 showing.

In 2016, his was fully developed (Stuff: 10/10, Movement: 13/13, Control: 12/12), and destined to have a great year. That great year was derailed, after 8 starts. He was put on the DL and was out for the rest of the season with a torn tricipes, he finished the year 3-3 with a 3.42.

The injury didn't slow him down as he came back in 2017 with vengeance, gaining some movement in the off-season (Stuff: 10/10, Movement: 14/14, Control: 12/12), he made the starting rotation and had a break-out season, going 15-6 with a 4.17 ERA in a team high 32 starts.

Sad to say this turned out to be his best season of his career. During the off-season following the 2017 season Ho was involved in a huge deal, which brought the Cavaliers their current team leader Jeff Lewis, along with MR Warner Rowe and 1B Mike Ford. Ho went to the Newark Millers along with Julio Romero, Adrian Otero, Julio Gonzalez, Jorge Jiminez and a 4th round pick. The Cavaliers didn't want to trade Jiminez or Ho, but they needed an offensive bat and in the end the deal was made.

GM Tony Luke, when asked about this deal, said this "There are times in this game, when you have to weigh your options, do whats best for the team, even when its not the popular choice. We needed offense, and bringing back Lewis and Ford was huge. But not without a cost, we gave up a lot. Otero was coming of an injury and was poised for a come back, Ho just had his break-out season and Jiminez was a top 50 prospect. I remember, I had a hard time pulling off this deal."

Ho was taken aback by this deal and when he showed up for spring training he gamed some weight and wasn't the same pitcher. He struggled to throw strikes and when he did they were straighter than before. His ratings took a huge hit in 2018 (Stuff: 9/10, Movement: 11/11, Control: 7/7) and he was never same pitcher.

In 2018 he threw so bad during spring the Millers sent him down to AAA to start the season and Ho never saw the big-league mound again. Ho went 3-2 6.23 in 27 games, only 4 starts in 2018 and it only got worse for him. In 2019 and 2020, Ho couldn't' get back on track and at the end of 2020 Ho decided to hang it up at the age of 31.

I can only look back and wonder what happened during that off-season of 2017-2018, was it leaving Norfolk that lead to his falling or was it destined to happen if he stayed in Norfolk? Either way, I was sad to realize that Ho never became that #3 starter I thought he was destined for.

Ho was never an all-star or the #3 starter that I thought he was destined for, but he did leave the DBL with 3 Championship trophies and will always be a part of the Cavaliers family.

Other News:
Last week it was Dan Nelson, this week it was Derek Carters turn to have his shut-out streak ended. Carter took his first loss of the season, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, agains the Admirals the other day. It was the first time he allowed a run in over 2 months! This steak was over 25 games and 25 innings.

At the end of the week Tom Dundee was sent back down to AAA, and Maruo Candelaria was recalled. Candelaria was 6-10 in 2 games since returning from his 2nd stint on the DL. Candy will be getting swings in as the back-up 2B, 3B, SS and RF. Don't expect much action, but we will see. Dooley is hitting the ball well right now so we will wait and see.

GM Notes:
Getting swept by the Admirals was an awful way to end the week. Allowing 2 3-run 9ths to walk-off the game was even more painful. The bullpen just sort of imploded those two games.

Francisco Gallegos is still on pace to break the record 50 2B's, but he has slowed up some of late. His current pace is 58, and he is still hitting the ball well but recently has shown more long-ball power then gap power.

Losing 3 games to the Admirals is not a good feeling, especially since our #1 and #2 had a turn in the rotation. This is going to be a rough end of the season, we just need to stay healthy and keep on doing what we have been doing.

The Barons are starting to play well again, which means most likely it will be them we face in the round of the playoffs. We have 3 more games against them later this year, so it should be interesting to see how they go. They are a month away, but they are circled on the calendar that is for sure.

Armando Lopez: 0-3, 13.81, last 6 games
Denny Dooley: .121, 0 HR, last 9 games.

Injuries:
Ramon Granados, Quad strain, 5 days
King Brock, Pending Diagnosis

Other News:
Julio Saldana gave up his first runs of the season, allowing 2 against the Senators this week. Took him 11 games and 20 innings pitched to get touched up.

Denny Dooley was removed from the starting lineup and Mauro Candelaria is back in. He will play 2B. John Stewart will get some swings at DH if King isn't able to go for too long.

GM Notes:
King Brock was hit-by-a-pitch in the first game of the Washington Series and hasn't played since. We are hoping its nothing major, but the longer the wait the more worried we are getting. Brock has been the heart and soul of this offense this season and is putting together a MVP caliber season. He had played in every game of the season, until the injury. Brock is hitting .311-30-112, he will be hard to replace if he is out for any length of time. Brock has 35 more RBI's than anyone else on the Cav's.

I moved Vaughan Griffith back to the bullpen, since the pen is struggling so much, and Armando Lopez is back in the rotation. Hopefully the couple week rest has done Armando good and he will come back with vengence. Vaughan went 1-0 in 3 starts, allowing 2 runs in both of his ND's... ok so I reversed this. After seeing the hot and cold lists, VG is back in the rotation and I am not sure what to do with Lopez. Maybe AAA, have a lot of youth ready to come up and play.

Armando Lopez will be sent down AAA and we will call up Rafael Rodriguez to pitch out of the bullpen. Lopez will be a starter and Rodriquez will give us another left in the pen. Rodriguez had an awful spring, but was solid for us last season. He is a hard throwing, topping out at 101 MPH. We are happy to have him back.

Matt Hollis is slumping again late in the season. Last year I put him on a pitch count the last month of the season... I will have to see if I need to do that again this season...

I have an idea of what I may do if Brock is out for a long time, and it won't cost much but budget space and a 10th round draft pick. I will have to keep my eyes open, because if I can't trade this guy, who will be a free agent at the end of next season it may not be worth it. Hmm...

Dropping to #2 in the power rankings is something I don't like. This team is just going through a struggle, we lost our power, our bullpen is faultering, we need a jolt. Eight days till September and that could be a help. Bring in some youth to pitch keep everyone fresh. We will see. My fingers are crossed we can work our way out of this funk soon. I really need an offensive spark, but don't have much to offer that in the minors...

Around the League:

DE Northern: Milford Clippers 69-55 (+1)

Players of the Week:
Delaware: George Corbett, Wilmington Iron Pigs, 8-22, 4 HR's, 12 RBIs

4) Newark Millers (107.7)
5) Ocean City Tourists (107.0)

News:
  • New Castle will miss one of the top middle-men as Elmer Hawkins is done for the seasons. Hawkins won't be able to throw a baseball for 4 months after tearing a muscle in his back. On the season Hawkins is 2-3 4.35 with 3 saves in 54 games.
  • Kent Davis of the Baltimore Barons is heading back to the DL after fracturing his cheekbone. Davis is hitting .400-1-63. Davis was trying to become the first player in DBL history to hit .400, but he may not be able to get enough plate appearances after this injury.
  • Starting pitcher Alfred Roberts, of the Milford Clippers, will miss 5-6 months with a broken bone in his elbow. Robert was 4-10 4.97 in 21 games this season.

Injuries:
King Brock, Broken Foot, 3 weeks

Other News:
King Brock was placed on the DL and will miss the next 3-4 weeks with a fractured foot. Brock was placed on the 11-day DL.

Jeff Lewis has been moved to the lead-off slot, Janchez dropped down to the #5 hole, and Francisco Gallegos is now batting #3. Mario Gomez will start at DH and bat 8th.

GM Notes:
Brock will be out for a month, and I have decided not to pull of the deal getting Billy Moore. He was due a lot of money next season and at 37 is in a decline. If Brock was out for the playoffs, Moore would be on this team right now, but we will make due, at least try to, with what we have.

MR Felix Diaz was moved from the 11-day DL to the 60-day DL freeing up a roster slot and AAA 3B Mario Gomez was called up to take Brocks slot on the roster. Gomez doesn't have the power I'd like to replace Brock with, but he has played well enough to deserve a shot. Gomez is a solid-3B and has is hitting .353-12-75 in AAA. Gomez is 22 and his hit over .340 in 3 straight AAA seasons. He will be eligible for the rule-5 draft if not on the 40-man this off-season, so this could be a big-shot for the 22 year old.

Mario Gomez struggled in his first week with the Cavaliers, hitting .118-1-1. That isn't the production I want out of my DH thats for sure. That Billy Moore deal is still lingering on my mind, problem is I'd have to pull it off today or tomorrow, cause September is coming. Do I want/need Billy? Its tough, he won't hit much, could flash some power, is a leader, overpaid... tough call.

Francisco Gallegos is in an awful slump, dropping his average under .300, and he is stuck at 43 doubles. Guess all this record breaking 2B talk scared him into forgetting how to hit. I still have faith, but I don't know he needs to come around. He is hitting .217 in August.

Ramon Granados went 2-3 in one rehab game in AAA and was brought up to take Mario Gomez's roster slot. Granados will man the DH role for 3 more weeks till Brock gets back.

This looks like it will be our first season since 2016, when we had 2 players reach the 19 win plateau, that we will now have a 20 game winner.

This week was gross. Our pitchers didn't give up more than 3 runs in any game, yet we only pulled off one win. What happened to the offense? It was just an amazing week. I am in quite a bit of shock.

Around the League:
Standings Leaders
DE Southern: Lewes Braves 71-59 (+1)
DE Northern: Milford Clippers 74-71 (+3)
MV Eastern: Baltimore Barons 83-47 (+6)
MV Western: Norfolk Cavaliers 86-44 (+20)

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Javier Trevino, Milford Clippers, 10-17, 2 HR's, 6 RBI's
MarVa: Cliff Jones, Chesapeake Blue Crabs, 12-25, 3 HR's, 10 RBI's, 4 R's

Power Rankings:
1) Baltimore Barons (113.9)
2) Norfolk Cavaliers (113.1)
3) Ocean City Tourists (111.6)
4) Milford Clippers (105.5)
5) Dover Generals (104.9)

News:
  • Jorge Fernandez of the Ellicott City Express went 4-5, hitting for the cycle. This is the 10th time in DBL history that a player has hit for the cycle. On a side note Jeff Lewis has done it twice, in 2015 and 2016, before coming to Norfolk, and is the only player to have done it more than once.
  • Jonathan Butler had his 20 game hit streak stopped. Butler has played 31 games so far this season for the Ellicott City Express. And has gotten a hit in 27 of them.
  • Francisco Reyes, of the Seaford Blue Jays, is sitting at 395 HR's for his career. He will be only the second player, after Abraham Thomas, who currently has 423.
  • Roberto Perez, of the Ocean City Tourists, is 3 runs away from 1000 for his career. He will be the first player in history to score 1000.
  • Billy Moore, of the Ellicott City Express, is 22 RBI's from 1000 for his career. He will be the 3rd member of the 1000 RBI club.

August 2021 - Recap

Delaware Conference Monthly Awards

DEConf Best Hitter Award to Wilmington's George Corbett: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 32-year-old George Corbett put together a solid offensive month for Wilmington and was crowned August's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .382 with 14 home runs, 37 RBIs and 21 runs scored. So far this season Corbett is hitting .325 with 33 home runs, 97 RBIs and 83 runs scored. He has 166 hits in 511 at-bats and a .387 OBP.

August's DEConf Top Pitcher is Millers Jones: The Pitcher of the Month has been picked and the Delaware Conference trophy went to Newark hurler Brad Jones for his strong performance in August. During the month, Jones was impressive with a 0.94 ERA and 4 wins and 1 loss. In 47.2 innings he struck out 50 and gave up 23 hits and 11 walks. To date this season Jones has compiled a 10-6 record with a 2.33 ERA in 25 starts.

Brown Voted August's Rookie Award: In August, Wiley Brown put up award-winning numbers and came away with the Rookie of the Month award in the Delaware Conference. Last month the 26-year-old New Castle left fielder played in 26 games and hit .275 with 3 doubles, 1 triple and 3 home runs. Brown also scored 10 times and drove in 15 runs. So far this season Brown has hit .261 with 6 home runs, 42 RBIs and and scored 52 times.

MarVa Conference Monthly Awards

Thomas Picks Up Best MVConf Batter Honors for August: Free agent-to-be Abraham Thomas has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month. In August, the 36-year-old Annapolis third baseman hit .340 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs. If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year. Thomas is currently batting .292 with 37 home runs and 110 RBIs.

Alfonso Is MVConf's Best Pitcher in August: Guillermo Alfonso has made fans throughout DELMARVA Baseball League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 5-0 record. No pitcher in the MarVa Conference threw better in August, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today. In 6 starts Alfonso compiled a 0.49 ERA, putting up a 5-0 record, striking out 30 and tossing 37 innings. Up to now Alfonso has compiled an ERA of 0.83 with a 6-0 mark over 8 starts. He has 34 strikeouts in 43.1 innings and has held opponents to a .170 batting average.

MVConf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Youngster Shunen Koyama emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Virginia Beach deserved the honor, batting .364 with 8 home runs and 31 RBI. Is the month of August a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Koyama enjoy the limelight. This season in 109 games Koyama is batting .275 with 17 home runs, 75 RBIs and has scored 65 times.

Delaware Conference League Leaders

End of the Year Award Front Runners:
Silver Slugger: Peter Peters, Francisco Reyes, Claude Bond
Golden Arm: Jose Matos, Jorge Padilla, Tony Garcia
Newcomer: Wiley Brown, RJ Brandon, Tim Leonard

MarVa Conference League Leaders

End of the Year Award Front Runners:
Silver Slugger: Will Riley, Kent Davis
Golden Arm: Marcos Estrada, Miguel Contrears
Newcomer: Augusto Silva, Shunen Koyama

Standings as of September 1, 2021

The Braves and Generals look to battle it out over the last 30 games, they only play each other 3 more times in the middle of the month. This should be a very good intense division fight.
Prediction: Dover Generals

The Colonials collasped, and the Clippers and Millers are now the front runners. Should be an interseting finish and I wouldn't count the Colonials out just yet. The Clippers seem to be playing the best ball right now, but anything can happen over the next 30. The Clippers and Colonials match up for 3 to end the season, and the Clippers and Millers match up only 3 more times this coming week.
Prediction: Milford Clippers

The Barons turned things on in August and seem to be riding high. The Tourists aren't out of it just yet, but the signs are still pointing to Baltimore to walk away. They Tourits will host the Barons at the end of the week for 3-games. Could this determine the winner?
Prediction: Baltimore Barons

The Cavaliers had a chance to clinch in August, but then fell apart, as their offense just couldn't score. Is it possible to blow a 20 game lead? It is, but it highly unlikely to happen. Look for the Cav's too play better in September.
Prediction: Norfolk Cavaliers

Cavaliers - August 2021 Recap

We went 15-13 in August, which was our worst winning pct for a month, and our second month under .550, the first being April. I attributed April to a lot of new young faces, and after 4+ months of games they shouldnt' be the cause of this kind of slump. Our team batting average dropped .005 points in the August and I hope that we can get it back in September. Time to let finish strong, stay healthy and win this thing...

We didn't have one full-time player hit over .300 in August and that is a bit nerving to me. This team is to talented not to hit the ball. Mauro Candelaria's return sparked some offense has he got 10 hits in 12 games, but he was hte highlight. Jeff Lewis drove in 20 and he was the only one to drive in over 12!! This goes to show you how important King Brock is to this team, right now we have a team of guys you can pitch around. No one is "fearing" the opposition. I really need Gallegos and O'Doengean to get out of his slump and hit the ball in September, I cna't head into the playoffs with an offense that is so aloof. Hurry back King, hurry back...

Our starters and bullpen keep doing what they do. This is the strength of this team and we have about 4 guys in AAA who could be on this roster right now. My biggest fear right now is Dalton Whitaker, everytime he makes me think he is coming out of it, he slips right back into the funk. Will Rose has pretty much wore out his welcome, I had faith he'd come back to form after his injury 2 years ago, but it never happened... These guys just have to keep doing what they do and hopefully the offense will come around...

Cavaliers in Focus: Alejandro Diaz

Alejandro Diaz is the #16 rated prospect in the game and the Cavaliers #1 prospect. At 21 he is just finishing up his 2nd full season of games, playing in A-ball last year and AA this. This year he is putting up some solid hitting numbers and in his mind he is ready to play in the bigs. Diaz was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2016 and has developed his way into a prospect, first hitting the list in 2019 at the #39 prospect. I am not sold on his overall talent, but our scout, Alexis Shelton, thinks he is a gamer and will be a solid player for years to come... however others scouts see this kid a sure-fire superstar. Going to be interesting to see what Diaz shows up over the following years.

Why am I not sure about him? Well when I see a kid with this kind of power its hard not to like him, but has poor plate discipline, which is going to lead to a lot of strike outs. This is something I haven't wanted on my team, I look for guys how put the ball in play. See the Yann Gosslin vs Francisco Gallegos trade, contact won over power. He has 142 K's in AA so far this season, which makes the 25 HR's seems not as impressive. He is going to move up AAA for the final month and split time with (my #1 catching prospect in Norfolk) Mark Bolton. With O'Donegan signed for a few more years there should be some interesting catching battles.

One that Diaz has going for him, outside of his power, is his defense. He is possibly the best defensive catcher in the system, he has strong arm shows good movement behind the plate. In AA he has throwing an impressive 37.5% of the base runners and has a FPct of .992 (9 errors).

At 21 he still has some developing to do, but could see some time in the big-league camp next year. We will revisit Diaz over the next few months to see how he finished off the season.

Injuries:
King Brock, Broken Foot, 2 weeks

Other News:
Alejando Diaz was promoted to AAA Yokohama. He will split time with Mark Bolton behind the plate.

John Phillips was prompted form AAA to the Cavaliers. Phillips who has been a back-up catcher for the Cav's for the past 3 years, could be seeing his final days in a Cavaliers uniform. In 75 AAA games Phillips has hit .255-4-27.

Mario Reyes will rejoin the Cavaliers, aftering slumping early with the Cav's Mario has hit the ball well in AAA, putting up .354-10-54. He will see some time around the infield giving Tom Anderson a break at 3B for one.

At the end of the week the Cavaliers called up Tom Dundee from AAA. Dundee will be penciled in as our starting RF'erer, moving Jeff Lewis from RF to LF and Sergio Galvez to the bench. Galvez will play ever 2-3 days behind Dundee, but we want Dundee to get his swings. Dundee finished his AAA season .319-42-124.

GM Notes:
Francisco Gallegos is starting to hit the ball better, which is good, only 5 more doubles for the record. Hopefully he will get some good swings over the final 4 weeks. Going to be tough to get to the record.

I am surprised to see Miguel with 18 wins, he has a shot at getting to 20. He should get 3 more starts, and the way he has thrown the ball things are looking good for him. The rest of the starters are doing alright, they all just seem to be struggling to get run support. Hopefully we will see that change with Brock due back in 2 weeks and with Dundee in the lineup.

I would like to bring up a few more guys, but I would also like to win that AAA title.

Manager Allastair Turcotte who has been here since 2013, first as the bench coach, then the Manager is on the hot seat. The Cav's have a solid bullpen mostly underworked and he is going to throw Dalton the day after he threw 2 innings? He pitched in 4 of 5 games and he has struggled this season. His use of the bullpen has been frustrating ever since he has taken over, but when you win, you win and its hard to frown upon that. If we don't win we are going to move on, our Bench coach Aurthur Ray is ready to take over the helm.

We have to right this offensive ship over the next 3 weeks, to have any hopes of beating the Barons in the MarVa Championship.

  • In a huge blow to the Lewes Braves, they will be without their ace and former Golden Arm winner, Jorge Moran. Moran tor his ulnar collateral ligament and is expected to miss 8-9 months. Moran, who has had an injury plagued season, finishes the year 11-4 2.26.

Javier Janchez, .350, 3 HR, last 5 games

Who's Not:

Injuries:
King Brock, Broken Foot, 6 days
Cornell Pearons, Strained Hamstring, 8 weeks

Other News:
Cornell Pearson left the game early on Tuesday after throwing 28 pitches, and the new we got 2 days later wasn't good at all. Cornell Peason has strained his hamstring and he will be out 8-9 weeks. The future ace of the staff was 14-7 3.11 on the season and will be missed.

"He was our #3 man, we needed him strong for the playoffs. This hurts."

Paul Brown will be called up to take his spot in the rotation. Brown has had a great year in AAA, going 18-3 2.77. He will assume the #3 spot in the rotation.

GM Notes:
Vaughan Griffith has been really impressive since moving to the rotation. In his last 7 games, all starts, he has only given up 5 runs 1 time and 4 runs 1 time. Its hard to see his record at 1-3 in those 7 starts. The games he lost he gave up 3, 3 and 1 runs over 7 innings. Tough luck for the kid. I am going to have to a lot of thinking about next seasons rotation.

Miguel Contreras has now made 29 starts this season, which means his vesting $15 M option for next season will kick in. The 33-year-old will have at least one more year anchoring down this staff. I doubt I will trade him, but you never know, I have a lot of youth in the organization. It would be hard, especially since he is having an amazing year. I have done it before when I traded Jose Matos after his Golden Arm award winning season. He seems to be getting better with age.

Now that I know that Miguel will be with us next season, I decided to take a look at our salary obligations for 2022 to see if anything will need to be done. We are coming in a little high at $111 M, which would be our 3rd highest payroll yet, but still under budget. We only have 2 upcoming free-agents, four players which are due big raises due to arbitration, and one player with a player option.

We are schedule to lose Will Rose (1-0 4.70 this year) and Julio Saldana (2-0 0.74) to free agency. This would be two fairly big hits to our bullpen, especially the way Saldana has thrown the ball this year. But we have a lot of young pitchers, and in the end I am not overly concerned. Saldana sat out last year, and I am not sure why this guy has been a beast.

Mauro Candelaria is sitting on a player option for 2022 worth $6.5M. With his "wrecked" health record and string of injuries over the past 2 years it would be hard to see him say 'No'. Deep down inside however, its what I want. He isn't worth $6.5M anymore, sad to say. I would think about bringing him back for less money, however.

Not sure what to do with the arbitration crew. Javier Janchez made $2.5 this season and is expected to make $3.8 next. Derek Carter made $2.5 and is expected to make $2.9 next (probably more). Tom Anderson made $490 this year and is set to make over $6 next. And finally, Cornell Pearson is expect to get a bump from the minium ($490) to $5.8. Going to be an intersting off-season.

This is going to start getting tough. I really like this group of guys and it will be hard to move any of them. Next years team might look really different. Here are our top-5 paid players for 2022.
1) Miguel Contreras: $15.1
2) Jeff Lewis: $14.4
3) Matt Hollis: $13.9
4) King Brock: $9.8
5) Mauro Candelaria: $6.5

I reached out to Cornell Pearons and offered him an extension that would keep him here for 4 more years, through his arbitration years. I offered him, originally, a 6-yr deal, but wanted nothing to do with that long of a contact.

I also reached out to Javier Janchez, but he wants some crazy amount of money. That won't be happening here. Maybe he wasn't fond of vesting options with PA limits. I may just have to sit back and see how his arbitration years pan out.

The reason I called up Paul Brown over Armando Lopez is simple. Since going down to AAA, Lopez has continued to struggle. In 4 starts with Yokohama, Lopez is 1-1 5.79. He is a much better pitcher than the record shows. There is a good possibility he could end up being the odd man out of the rotation next season. He will have a bright career in the DBL no matter where he ends up. I just have too much big-league ready pitching. The rotation will be interesting next season to say the least.

Lets just finish off this season, as you can tell I get easily distracted.

News:
  • Glenn Jenkins is struggling to recovery from his injury and will be out the rest of the season. It will be 5-6 more weeks until he is able to resume baseball activities. Jenkins hit .294-7-52 on the season. "At 39 you don't bounce back as you do when you are 25. To say this is disappointing would be an understatement."
  • Frederick Taylor of the Seaford Blue Jays has struggled this season and now his season is going to end on an injury. When things go wrong they go wrong. Taylor was 1-7 6.41 with 12 saves in 30 games with the Blue Jays. He was 2-2 2.95, in 37 games with the Generals before a mid-season deal.
  • Jacob Chaney of the Christiana Blue Hens is hoping to be ready for next season after recieving his injury update. He was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to be out 7-8 months. Chaney hit .267-14-50 this year, and will be a free-agent at the end of season.
  • 33-year-old James McLaughlin has agreed to a 4-year, $53,200,000 extension to keep him in Ocean City. McLaughlin has gone 7-9 5.21 in 25 starts so far this season, for his career he is 126-73 3.54. He has been Ocean City since 2017.

Injuries:
Cornell Pearons, Strained Hamstring, 7 weeks

Other News:
To start the week Domingo Cardoza was added to the roster. Cardoza a starting pitcher had a solid year in AAA, going 15-1 4.21 in 25 starts. Cardoza will be slotted in as the #6 starter, as we head in to the final 2 weeks of the season and don't have a day off for 14 more games (on a 17 game no-day off streak, longest of the year).

King Brock came off the DL on Saturday. He will be inserted into the lineup, even after missing 3+ weeks, I need to get him going for the playoffs. With Brock back, Granados will be displaced as the DH after doing an admiral job. Granados will now share time with Janchez in CF.

GM Notes:
Decided to go to a 6-man rotation to keep my guys healthy for the playoffs, at least that is what I am hoping will happen.

Losing 2 out of 3 to the Barons is crushing. They will be our first round oppenent again this year and last year they sat us down and if this series was any indication we are going to have our hands full once again.

This week we showed off our complete lack of hitting in the clutch. We just couldn't get anything done, leaving way too many people on base. We are going to need some of these guys to step it up during the play offs, I am starting to get a little worried. If you asked me a few weeks ago if I thought it was our year, no question, it was, now, I am not so sure.

Javier Janchez is hot right now, and it has showed in his contract negotiations. He is good, but this year is the first time in his career he has played over 130 games. The past 2 seasons in Norfolk he was supposed to be our starting CF or LF, but injuries didn't allow that to happen. Can I really dish out big bucks to a kid who isn't going to play, because he is fragile? He does continue to get better. Something to revisit down the road. He will be a free agent around 2024 (I think).

The two kids Paul Brown and Domingo Cardoza pitched well this week, which is something I like to see. They are both going to be fighting for a rotation slot next year. Contreras (FA 2022), Hollis (FA 2025) and Pearson (FA 2024) will be holding down the 1-3 slots next year. I really need to figure out what to do with Takayuki Iemochi. He is good, but if he continues to lose his control, he won't be. He is due $490 next year, might make some really good trade bait.

Seven straight road games next week, going to be tough. Hopefully we look much better than we did this week.

  • Herminio Bovay, of the Ellicott City Express, will miss the rest of the season after straining his hamstring. Bovay, finished the season with 238 hits and a .371 batting average.
  • Luis Ortiz, backup SS, for the Salisbury Ports is out 10 months with a torn labrum. The 32 year old struggled this year hitting .160 in 25 AB's, after being called up.
  • Fred Simmons, the Milford Clippers prospect, will miss 6 months, after rupturing his MCL. Simmons has answered the call since being called up in September hitting 4-9 with 3 RBI's.
  • Abraham Thomas, of the Annapolis Admirals, will miss the rest of the season after getting hit by a pitch. The knee bruise shuts down the games top power hitter. Thomas finished the injury plagued season .283-41-122. Thomas is 68 HR's shy of 500, and will be a free-agent at seasons end.
  • Dave McGill, of the Ellicott City Express, has suffered a set-back during his rehab and it looks like he will be shut down for the rest of the season. The 34-year old, who is suffering with a strained oblique, hit .248-10-60 on the year.

Tom Dundee: 1-3, HR (2), R, 2 RBI
H: 11, LOB: 7

Game 156: Norfolk 1, Washington 5
Takayuki Iemochi (18-6): 8.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 6 K
Mario Reyes: 3-4
Augusto Rodriguez: 1-4, 2B, RBI
H: 8, LOB: 7

Cavaliers News:
Who's Hot:
King Brock: .464, 3 HR, last 9 games.

Who's Not:
none

Injuries:
Cornell Pearons, Strained Hamstring, 6 weeks

Other News:
King Brock strained a quad in the 2nd game of the week, so he was pulled from activity for the rest of the week. Sergio Galvez was placed in the lineup to take his place.

Cornell Pearson and the Cavaliers have come to an agreement to keep Cornell in Norfolk for his arbitration years. The "estimate" that the experts were throwing around in the $10-million ballpark, so this deal is very favorable for the Cavaliers. Pearson signed a 4 year deal totalling $27,920,000.

Yokohama, our AAA franchise, will be heading to the AAA Championships, as they beat the Dublin Black Sox 3-0. They will take on the St Johns Norse in the Championship.

GM Notes:
I am bummed, yet excited, about our AAA going so far. It would of been nice to get some of those kids up here for a few swings, but it is what it is. Maybe I am just putting too much on a AAA Championship. I don't know, it will be cool if we can win it.

One more week of games, each starter should get their one start, and we will go from there. Takayuki looks like he will finsih 1 win away from 20 this season, but wow what a season. I was nervous with him at the beginning of the year, but he turned it around. The starting four are going to have to carry this team through the playoffs, which means Hollis and Takayuki better bring their a-game, the way this offense has been performing.

I will have to figure out who will play the outfield during the playoffs. Sergio Galvez seems to be hitting the ball better of late, Janchez is crushing and Granados has been doing well. Maybe Brock or Galvez will see some time at 1B, while all 3 of those guys play. Gallegos seems to be off a little, but has still put together a solid first season.

We are one game away from having home field throughout the playoffs, and I think its going to be tough to catch the Barons. They are hot and we are not... at home this season we have played .680 ball and on the road .593, thats a big difference. This 11-13 September, following a 15-12 August has been a wake up call.

I am still debating if I made a mistake by not acquiring Billy Moore. An aging power presence that makes a lot of money, but still a threat. Maybe it would be something these kids needed. I hate putting all this pressure on King Brock and Jeff Lewis to carry this offense. Someone else needs to step up.

  • The games all-time base-stealer, Pedro Galvan, of the Dover Generals, is done for the season, and the first round of the playoffs, if Dover can sneak in, after straining his oblique. Galvan ended the year hitting, a career high .324, adding 3 HR's, and 50 RBI's. He has stole 55 bases.
  • Francisco Reyes celebrated his 400th HR, by hitting 401, in his next at-bat. Reyes is the 2nd player in DBL history to reach the 400 plateu (Abraham Thomas-427).
  • Claude Bond will miss the final 2 weeks of the regular season, adding another blow to any chance the Generals had at catching the Braves. Bond, sustained a foot bruise, after getting hit-by-a-pitch. On the season Bond set career highs with a .321 average and 38 HR's. He added 108 RBI's.
  • Matt Rollins of the Ellicott City Express, and the current #8 prospect in the DBL, will miss the next year, after tearing his UCL and requiring Tommy John surgery. Rollins made his big-league debut this September, pitching in 4 games, collecting a save, and posting a 1.93 ERA.

September in Review 2021

Delaware Conference Monthly Awards

Kohl Captures DEConf Batter of Month Award: Andy Kohl battered Delaware Conference pitchers all September and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 30-year-old Kohl told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 23 games, Kohl hit .378 with 9 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 23 runs. For the year Kohl is hitting .333 with 44 home runs. His stats include 126 RBI and 109 runs scored.

Dover's García Chosen September's Best in DEConf: Whether Tony García stays in Dover beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In September the 35-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. He put up some fancy numbers with a 5-0 record and and an ERA of 1.88. In 43 innings he struck out 30, surrendered 39 hits, 7 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month. So far this year García has 21 wins and 5 losses and a 3.77 ERA.

DEConf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: A veritable toddler to the Delaware Conference, Dennis Fairchild just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for September. Over the past month the 25-year-old shortstop for Dover hit .338 with 22 hits, 2 home runs and 12 RBI. He also logged 1 walks and compiled a .348 on-base percentage. So far this season, Fairchild has recorded a .257 batting average with 36 hits, 5 home runs, 20 RBIs, 18 runs scored and a .276 OBP.

MarVa Conference Monthly Awards

Kawamura Takes MVConfs's Best Bat Trophy: In the month of September Sozen Kawamura thumped the ball with authority, earning MarVa Conference Batter of the Month honors in the process. Baltimore's first baseman hit .372 with 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and scored 17 runs. This season Kawamura is batting .265 with 107 hits and 22 home runs. He has scored 65 times and has 73 RBI.

Contreras Stands Out, Choice for Best Pitcher: Miguel Contreras's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in September, the 33-year-old Norfolk hurler has been named MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 36 in 31.2 innings, logged an ERA of 1.42 and allowed opponents to hit .162 against him. This season Contreras has registered 21 wins and 9 losses in 31 starts with a 1.92 ERA.

MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Youngster Paul Turner emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Richmond deserved the honor, batting .319 with 6 home runs and 18 runs batted in. Is the month of September a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Turner enjoy the limelight. To date, Turner has collected 79 hits for a .281 average. He has posted 18 home runs, scored 45 runs and driven in 54 runs.

Standings as of October 1, 2021 (3 more games to play)

With 3 games remaining the Lewes Braves look to be on their way to clinching their 3rd straight Southern Division title. They will face off with the Milton Brewers, as the Generals take on the Georgetown Sixteens. Later today, the ace of the Braves will be on the hill and that game could determine the final result. The Braves are trying to defend their 2020 title.
Prediction: Lewes Braves

The Milford Clippers used a 19-8 September to clinch their first Northern Division title. They have 3 2nd place finsishes in team history, so this clinching year means a lot to the Clippers and their fans. GM Andrew Schmidt and Manager Jesus Gonzalez have been with the Clippers since day 1, so this year's Division title is ecspeically meaningful to those two guys.

The Barons had been growing up for a few years, finishing 3rd 3 years ago, 2nd 2 years ago, winning the division last season and then repeating this year. A young team with a small, yet loyal, fan base, has done a lot over the pat 2 years. Tim Childers the GM came to Baltimore in 2014 with a plan, and it all seems to be comign together. Last years trip to the Championsihp game wasn't enough, this year the Barons are set to win it all.

The Cavaliers have now won 6 straight Western Divsion titles, and 7 of 9 total. Last year was the only time they made the playoffs and didn't win it all, which meant for a long off-season for the fans, the players and the GM Tony Luke. They came back with a younger team with their sites on winniing title #6, but have struggled over the past month and the critics have all but gave the MarVa Conference crown to the Barons. The Cavaliers will be out to prove them wrong.

With 3 games left, the Barons and the Cavaliers will be fighting for home field throughout. This is very meaningful to the Cavlaliers who played much better ball at home... Should be an interesting final 3 days...

---
I will do a Cavaliers recap at the end of the season, since there are only 3 games left. Hate how this years scheduled carried over to October.

Other News:
We have resigned all our minor league coaches expect for the pitching coach in AA New Orleans. Manager Alastair Turcottes contract expires at the end of next season.

GM Notes:
This was a great way to finish the season, running off 5 straight wins, makes me feel a little better about round 1 with our team hitting the ball like they have been.

Takayuki missed a 20 win season by one game. He had a slow start at the beginning of the season, but finished strong. Between Contreras, Hollis and Iemochi we have a pretty solid 1-2-3 punch. I will have to figure out what I am going to do with #4. Vaughan Griffith? Paul Brown? Armando Lopez? I am not sure, but I will have a decision to make for the playoffs. Missing Pearson hurts.

Javier Janchez finished the season off strong as could be. Hopefully that will be sign of thing sto come next season. That Fragile injury tag however does scare me a bit. Right now with Lewis, Janchez and Brock, we have a nice top of the order. All seem to be playing well and hitting the ball well.

I am excited to get the playoffs started, now I just need to put the finishing touches on my playoff roster. Six years in a row and with our pitching we should be contenders for a few more. We are going all out for the win this year, losing last year only made us want it more... Bring on the Barons.

News:
  • Will Riley of the Ellicott City Express finished the season strong, setting career highs in HR's, RBI's and Average. He however missed the final few games with a strained achilles tendon. Riley is the favorite to the win the Silver Slugger in the MarVa Conference. On the season the all-star hit .355-40-122, posting a 8.2 WAR.

  • Sam Skinner of the Annapolis Admirals has been suspended by the league for 35 games, after he was indicited for participating in a shceme to defraud investors. The 34-year old hit .375-2-5 in limited time with the Admirals this season. He was quoted in a post-bail press conference, "I know absolutely nothing about this," the 34-year-old ballplayer said. "All I did was invest in McIntyre and Koch Holdings and next thing I know I'm posting bail."
  • Abraham Thomas of the Annapolis Admirals, returned from injury just to get hurt again. Thomas the leagues most prolific HR hitter, finished his injury plauged season with 42 HR's and 125 RBI's. He will be out of baseball activities for the next month and a half after fracturing his thumb.

  • Alec Haney will miss 5 months after tearing a back muscle. The 24 year old pitched in 85 games this season for the Wilmington Iron Pigs going 9-7 with a 5.40 ERA.

  • Herminio Bovay of the Ellicott City Express walks away with the league batting crown, hitting .371

Lewes Braves vs Milford Clipppers
The Braves are making their 4th playoff appearance, and have won 2 Championships (2015, 2020)

Baltimore Barons vs Norfolk Cavaliers
The Barons are following up their 93 win, Championship Game appearance of last year with a 104 win season. This is the their 2nd playoff appearance.
The Cavaliers won 100 games for the 6th straight time nad are in the playoffs for the 6th straight time and 7th overall. They have won the Championship, 5 times, last year was the first year they made the playoffs and went home without the trophy.

Playoff Preview - Delaware Conference

The Braves are without their ace Jorge Moran, their close Carlos Rodriguez and back-up catcher throughout the playoffs. They come into the playoffs fairly hot, winning 19 games in September, following two slow down months in July and August, as the tried to solve their rotation issues with Moran out of the game. Cristobal Diaz picked up the slack going 5-0 in his last 6 starts with a sub-1 ERA.

The most unique thing about the Braves is they have have 4 left-handed starters, which will be a huge advantage for them as the Clippers played .500 ball (24-24) this season against lefties.

The Clippers are full of injuries, yet they finished the season strong going 21-9 over the last month of the season. Bill Little their starting LF is out, Jarred Perry their ace is out, Alfred Roberts their #4 starter is out, Tsuneo Sato a starter/reliever is out, and Eduardo Greene their power-hitting starting 1B will miss the first round. And to boot they are waiting to find out if Marino Salazar, their current #2 starter will be available for the playoffs.

The Braves won 6 of 10 games against the Clippers this season and as beat up as they are, they are still healthier than the Clippers. This shoudl be an interesting series, but in the end I believe the Braves will be heading to the DelMarVa Championship series for the 2nd year in a row.

Braves Who to Watch:
Leonard Davis: .297-22-68
Sanho Busones: .287-10-75
Cristobal Diaz: 14-8 2.35

Clippers Who to Watch:
Javier Trevino: .330-20-76
Jose Matos: 16-7 2.92
Seth Bennett: 16-8 2.93

Playoff Preview - MarVa Conference

The Barons come into the playoffs pretty healthy. They are missing a couple of middle relievers, their #5 starter and their ace. However their ace Arturo Ramirez missed the whole season, and that is when Vincent Parker stepped it up and had a career year, winning 19 games and posting a 3.05 ERA, both career bests. Last years team was the first playoff team in the history of the Barons, and this year they have a better offense (+100 runs) and better pitching (-8 runs). The loss in last years Championship game made the Barons hungrier this season and they are ready to take home the title.

The Cavaliers are all about pitching. Their offense this season was really inconsissent and ended up being the lowest scoring playoff team in Cavaliers history. They will need to score runs agains the high-scoring Barons if they expect to win this series. Pitching wise this is the 3rd best staff in Cavaliers history and with the way Iemochi and Contreras have been throwing the ball lately anything is possible. They only injury the Cavaliers are dealing with is with their #3 starter, Cornell Perason, who will miss the playoffs.

This series comes down to pitching versus hitting. They played .500 ball against each other this series with the Barons winning the first series and the last series and the Cav's taking to two center series. How does that translate to the end of they year, with both teams playing well? We have 7 games to figure that out. Prediction Barons in 6.

Barons Players to Watch:
Jesus Mansanarez: 11-11 4.86
Mike Tayler: .288-33-137
Manuel Martinez: .288-14-91

Cavaliers Players to Watch:
Miguel Contreras: 21-9 1.92
Takayuki Iemochi: 19-6 3.24
Javier Janchez: .271-18-73, 32 SB
