Monday, September 30th, 1946 The end of the baseball season brings with it a bevy of awards. The latest went to Johnny Mize, the 1946 National League batting champion. For the year, the Cubs first baseman posted a .334 batting average. His 193 base hits included 33 doubles, 5 triples, and 32 home runs. Additionally, Mize scored 105 times and knocked in 91 runs. Detroit's Gardella Takes Home AL Batting Honors Monday, September 30th, 1946 This season Danny Gardella won the American League 1946 batting title. The 26-year-old right fielder hit .349 for the Detroit Tigers over a span of 140 games with 17 doubles, no triples and 23 home runs among his 166 hits. Gardella drove in 117 runs and scored 84 times. Newhouser Wins Triple Crown Monday, September 30th, 1946 Few men in baseball history have won the pitching triple crown. Hal Newhouser of the Chicago Cubs joined this elite company today when the season ended, officially making him the league leader in ERA, K's and wins. Newhouser put up a 28-5 record, an ERA of 1.81 and 261 strikeouts this season. He started 38 times, walked 88 and held opposing clubs to a .214 average. Newhouser is the odds-on favorite to capture the Walter Johnson Award this year. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Thursday, September 12th, 1946 With the rookie draft only weeks away, clubs are huddled in their conference rooms, mapping out scouting strategies with their eye toward the future. These sabermetrical speculators will be traipsing across the fruited plain, hunting for the ideal find, trying to decipher the will, drive and pure passion on the unknown youthful faces before them. Some will rely on tried-and-true baseball knowledge, others psychology. And others will live by luck alone. Though their final assessments will be made and hashed over many times before draft day, the repercussions of draft day, good or bad, will endure long after the dust has settled. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Bobby Adams, 24 year-old second baseman out of college. 2. Spider Jorgensen, 26 year-old third baseman out of college. 3. Wes Westrum, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 4. Curt Simmons, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 5. Wally Westlake, 25 year-old right fielder out of college. 6. Ferris Fain, 25 year-old first baseman out of college. 7. Larry Jansen, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Ted Kluszewski, 22 year-old first baseman out of college. 9. Larry Doby, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 10. Hank Thompson, 20 year-old second baseman out of college. NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, September 30th, 1946 From spring training to the last out of the regular season, it has been the goal of every GM, team, manager and player to reach the North American BaseBall League playoffs. They all aspire to win baseball's Holy Grail, the North American Series title. Now, for the elite teams, the first steps of that journey begin in earnest with the North American Series starting today. The opening playoff series will pit these teams against one another: New York Yankees versus Chicago Cubs.

New York 1946 North American Series Champions Wednesday, October 9th, 1946 The Yankees earned their 6th North American Series title and now get to spend all winter basking in glory, while the beaten Cubs will have plenty of time to wonder what went wrong. New York is the North American BaseBall League Champions for 1946. They did it with a 8-4 triumph to capture the series 4-3. "Both clubs are talented. We just made fewer mistakes than they did," the winning manager said to the press corps at the postgame press conference. "We made the crucial plays and got the timely hits." The Chicago skipper agreed with that assessment and added, "We were a little weak on fundamentals at crucial times. I have a sneaky suspicion we will be working on fundamentals a lot next spring." OffSeason Retirements ![]() NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Saturday, October 12th, 1946 Cleveland, Brooklyn, Boston, Chicago and New York have the opportunity to really make some organization-altering changes today. Their GMs have been huddled around the conference room all night, playing over scenarios with the scouting staff, arguing out the merits of every possible scenario they can fathom. Who they pick might set their clubs up for ten years of quality baseball or it might mean ten years of languishing as an also-ran. BNN experts have concluded that these ten young men should be picked at the top of the draft: 1. Curt Simmons, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 2. Vic Wertz, 21 year-old left fielder out of college. 3. Earl Torgeson, 22 year-old first baseman out of college. 4. Mel Parnell, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 5. News Snider Pounds 3 HR Against Athletics Tuesday, April 29th, 1947 Philadelphia won't soon forget the display of raw power put on today by Duke Snider of the Cleveland Indians. He victimized the Athletics by pounding three pitches out of Cleveland Stadium. The homers sparked his club to a 6-5 win and got him a spot in the league record book. "I got three pitches down the pipe and popped them," Snider told reporters. "Today I was in a groove ... tomorrow I could just pop up the same pitches and go oh-for-three." In addition to the homers, he collected 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs. Duke Snider hit a solo-shot off Jack Wilson in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Jack Wilson in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Jack Wilson in the 6th and grounded out in the 8th. Snider is hitting .500 this year with 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and 6 runs scored. He has 8 hits in 16 at-bats, no walks and a .500 on-base percentage. Snider has played in 10 games. Achievements

The Washington Senators have agreed to send 31-year-old left fielder Bud Stewart to the Brooklyn Dodgers for 30-year-old catcher Clyde McCullough and 22-year-old minor league left fielder Vern Benson. So far this year McCullough is batting .222 with 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and 19 runs scored. St. Louis, Brooklyn Trade Players Monday, July 7th, 1947 The St. Louis Cardinals addressed a concern today, coming to terms with the Brooklyn Dodgers on a trade that will send 34-year-old center fielder Guy Curtright from the Cardinals to the Dodgers in exchange for 31-year-old minor league shortstop Claude Corbitt and 24-year-old minor league third baseman Kermit Wahl. Feller Twirls No-Hitter Against Boston Sunday, July 13th, 1947 "Bob Feller was just plain nasty on the mound today," according to his batterymate and quite a few of the Boston Red Sox after the Cleveland hurler fired a 2-0 no-hitter. The Red Sox were powerless against him. "It is what we call in baseball 'filthy'... his stuff was just too much for us today," the losing manager told reporters after the game." In an overpowering performance Feller faced 30 batters in all and finish the game with 12 strikeouts and 4 walks. "After the first couple of innings, I knew I had some good stuff going," Feller said. "In the bullpen, it really wasn't that good, to be honest. But when I got out on the mound and flipped the switch, I had some pretty good stuff. I had a good fastball with control and I was able to throw my breaking ball and changeup for strikes." So far this year Feller has a 12-6 record with a 2.36 ERA.

Bevens Brilliant -- Fires No-Hitter Friday, August 1st, 1947 Bill Bevens was unhittable today as he beat the Dodgers 1-0. The Chicago pitcher breezed through the Brooklyn lineup and got himself a no-hitter. Bevens had them talking to themselves as he struck out 5 and issued 2 walks in an outstanding performance at Wrigley Field. His catcher said to reporters after the game, "He started off slow. He didn't have command of anything in the first three innings, but lucked his way through them. The Dodgers really helped him out by not being patient... they hit a lot of first pitches. Then it all came together in the fourth. From there on, the Dodgers never had a chance. He dominated them." To date this season, Bevens has registered 19 starts, 8-9 won-lost mark, 4.66 ERA, 141 IP, 53 strikeouts and 62 walks. Opposing teams have hit .242 against him.

Commenting on his defeat, the losing manager told reporters in the clubhouse how he saw the game, "Well, it was pretty simple today, the Reds had all the hits and all the runs. Big Numbers Net Williams Triple Crown Tuesday, September 30th, 1947 Pirates right fielder Ted Williams will look back on 1947 as a magical season after eclipsing his peers in the three major batting categories -- batting average, home runs and RBIs. He batted .356 with 53 home runs and 146 RBIs to pick up the 9th Triple Crown in NABL play. "It's been an incredible year," said a smiling Williams, "I really can't explain how this happened. A lot of things have to go your way to accomplish something like this. You have to stay healthy and you have to stay away from long slumps." The Pittsburgh skipper told reporters at the press conference, "There were days when Ted played hurt. It really is amazing the things he has done this year." The latest Triple Crown winner added, "I'm thankful to Pirates fans and to my teammates for their encouragement. It was a joy to come to the ballpark every day." .317 Average Wins Title for Hopp Tuesday, September 30th, 1947 According to his manager, "Hard work and a good, quick swing were the keys to Johnny Hopp winning the American League batting championship this season." It became official with the close of the regular season that the St. Louis center fielder had won the title with a .317 batting average. During the year Hopp played in 131 games and accumulated 148 hits, including 21 doubles, 9 triples and 4 home runs. The AL's leading batter also put up 48 RBIs and scored 68 runs. NABL News: Playoffs begin Tuesday, September 30th, 1947 With a championship to be decided, the North American BaseBall League is filled with excitement. There's nothing like the thrill of the playoffs. There will be some career-defining moments played out in the coming days. There will be some heroes, some great plays, some blunders and some failures, but it will be a great time for fans. Playoff baseball is here and it gets underway today. The North American Series starts today with this slate of games: Pittsburgh Pirates versus Cleveland Indians.

They are the guys that steal outs. They make spectacular plays, but they also consistently make the routine plays. This year in the National League these defensive stalwarts made a name for themselves with their gloves: Pitcher: Harry Brecheen (Boston Braves) Catcher: Al Evans (Boston Braves) First Baseman: Earl Torgeson (Cincinnati Reds) Second Baseman: Bobby Doerr (Philadelphia Phillies) Third Baseman: Spider Jorgensen (Pittsburgh Pirates) Shortstop: Lou Boudreau (Chicago Cubs) Left Fielder: Hank Steinbacher (Philadelphia Phillies) Center Fielder: Stan Musial (St. Louis Cardinals) Right Fielder: Gene Hermanski (St. Louis Cardinals) AL Best Fielders for 1947 Selected Monday, October 20th, 1947 In baseball circles, a player who has good range, a good arm and good hands is a great catch. Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 1947 in the American League go to these standout defenders: Pitcher: Tex Hughson (Washington Senators) Catcher: Jim Castiglia (St. Louis Browns) First Baseman: Eddie Morgan (Cleveland Indians) Second Baseman: Eddie Stanky (Chicago White Sox) Third Baseman: Bob Dillinger (Philadelphia Athletics) Shortstop: Lynn Myers (Chicago White Sox) Left Fielder: Augie Bergamo (Chicago White Sox) Center Fielder: Gene Woodling (Philadelphia Athletics) Right Fielder: Tommy Holmes (Cleveland Indians) Fain This Year's Best Rookie Tuesday, October 21st, 1947 The debut season of Pittsburgh's first baseman Ferris Fain was capped off today with the announcement that he has been crowned the 1947 National League Newcomer of the Year Award winner. The 25-year-old starter registered a 14-10 record this season in 23 starts. Over 224.2 innings he gave up 186 hits, struck out 106 and issued 60 walks as he held the opposition to a .224 batting average and fashioned a 2.28 ERA. In 36 starts he struck out 91 and walked 128 in 294.1 innings. Feller of Cleveland Named Best Pitcher Thursday, October 23rd, 1947 The Walter Johnson Award for 1947 has been presented and the American League winner is Bob Feller of Cleveland. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Feller. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Indians star told reporters. Feller excelled with an impressive 21-13 record in 37 starts. In 313 innings he yielded 224 hits and 143 walks, while striking out 221 and compiling a fine 2.21 ERA. 1947 Top Batter Selected In NL Friday, October 24th, 1947 Ted Williams of the Pittsburgh Pirates proved that you can step out of the shadows and onto the stage if you've got the talent and the drive to hone your skills. Hard work, long hours and a tireless resolve paid off for him today in the form of the National League Ty Cobb Award. Williams hit for a .356 average while collecting 196 hits, 24 doubles, 9 triples, 53 home runs, 146 RBIs and scoring 139 times. Ron Northey Captures AL Ty Cobb Award Friday, October 24th, 1947 It's been a year of triumph for veteran Ron Northey of the Washington Senators as he hit his way to the 1947 American League Ty Cobb Award. The 27-year-old veteran compiled a .286 average and .360 on-base percentage by putting together 168 hits, 23 doubles, 4 triples, 37 home runs and 66 walks. Stan the Man, what a player. I love this quote from him:
"The first principle of contract negotiations is don't remind them of what you did in the past - tell them what you're going to do in the future." |
