The last person I can remember having behaviour problems in Montréal is Chris Chelios. Hardly a dysfunctional family .

Belfour would probably be 4th or 5th on the depth chart, though.

I have no doubt that Ribeiro is a great guy. I think Theo and Dagenais got traded because of bad contracts/bad player and I thought this would be enough to calm down Ribeiro a little bit but looks like Gainey didn't think it was enough. As for the hard partying, lets just say that it involved a little bit more than booze and sex and that was the issue.

Dagenais, IIRC, didn't get traded, he simply faded away. As for Théodore, indeed there was reason enough to trade him. As for Ribeiro, Stéphane Quintal mentioned he simply wasn't welcome in the locker room anymore, especially not by the captain. I had never heard of any drug-related stories or the like anywhere, the media really don't like to talk about that. How do you figure this?

The 'Canes will be very pleased with this as they deal away two UFA's for Eaves (who will continue to get better and hopefully a change of scenery might see an end to his injury history) and Corvo (who plays well - just keep him out of restaurants!).

A deal that works for both right now though

You're right about Dagenais. He went to play in Europe. We didn't get much for Theo, even though Aebisher is a better goalie then what he showed us in Montreal...

In the case of Ribeiro, we got crap for him.

Journalists tend to keep outside matters and personnal life problems out of the paper, most of the time at least, and that's what they did with the 3 amigos. But ask around in the right bars in Montreal or to a couple of well informed policemen and you will read some articles from the Montreal press in a different way, especially when they were reporting 'chemistry problem' with those 3.

Do I think it justifies trading Ribeiro for pretty much nothing? No. But that's not my call, obviously.

1. I'm quite satisfied with how the Théodore trade turned up, as I was then. It was essentially a financial decision, and with the salary cap it's a great thing to get rid of a huge salary for an underachieving player.

2. When the trade was made, I wasn't immediately turned off by it. Ribeiro had his problems, and Niniimaa had been useful in the past. Well, obviously, that didn't work out. But, at the time, it made a tiny bit more sense than now - though it still wasn't the deal of the century.

3. Well, I don't hang out with policemen and I guess I'm not client to the same bars as these guys, but are recreative drugs such a horrendous offense? I mean, I guess Gainey wasn't too happy about it, rightly so, but does it make it necessary to trade them away at all costs, and to constantly keep talking of "personal problems" 4-5 years later? Well, unless it constantly made them call Gainey up in the middle of the night and saying "Hey, Bob, guess who's under me right now? Oh, by the way, your wife says hi!"

My guess, and that is a total guess, is that the problems or consequences of the problems might have carried to the locker room and that's why Gainey had to do what he did. But that is indeed unfortunate.
And by the way, you know Gainey's wife is dead. So yeah, that would have been a great reason to trade them...

I have mixed feelings about this deal... but mainly just because Commy is a fan favorite. It's a smart move for the Canes; well, both teams, really.

If Corvo can help our ailing power-play at all, I'll be happy.

Brindy went down last night. Not good.

The young guys played well, but our defense is like swiss cheese right now.

The Canadiens came back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Rangers in a shootout last night, the biggest comeback in their history. I didn't see it, but the highlights are nifty. Koivu does a number on Lundquist in the shootout!

I was at a bar last night watching that Canadien game. It was a nice one. The crowd in the Bell Centre was loud.

Had tickets to last night's game of the Habs.

Not only did I miss the game because I was in Ontario, but I was not able to catch it on TV.

Damn.

The rumours are getting really intense. Marian Hossa has been talked about abundantly in Montréal, but La Presse (under the very respectable pen of Mathias Brunet) is reporting that the Canadien has ordered equipment to Marian Hossa's specifications. They say it's not a done deal (they'd done so for Aucoin and Khabibulin years ago - the transaction luckily fell through as Aucoin broke his ankle), but it's getting close. He's reporting Ryder/Streit/picks, which, honestly, wouldn't be too bad - I'd be really pissed if the Canadien lost Streit, however, as players like him that can play in any situation, both on offense and defense, is a very valuable asset. If the Canadien does sign Hossa, it better find a way to sign him long term. Also, they better hope that Hossa can play well outside his division. Anyway, in my dreams, Hossa signs an extension with Montréal, Streit comes back in the offseason, and they both play well for years to come .

RDS is now reporting that the equipment was for Marcel Hossa, who was in town with the Rangers when they couldn't keep a 5-0 lead. The equipment was apparently gloves... which, for Montréal or New York, aren't of different colours.

If anyone wants to watch the game where the Habs came back from 5-0 to win against the Rangers, it's available in a 1-hour format on the RDS website, completely legally, in two parts: Part 1 and Part 2. The commentary's in French, but you can surely recognize player names.
