I'll try. I'm playing squash tonight for the first time in about 12 years so I could be unconscious by the time the games come around I'll try my best - both should be good...don't know which one to watch....probably Ghana ...I want them to win

Just around where I live

The Auckland volcanic field has about 50 volcanoes, within an area of 360 square kilometres. Some take the familiar shape of hills with large craters at the top, like Rangitoto and One Tree Hill.

Football's rules have deliberately been altered slightly over the years to assist the skillful play. Yellow cards have become more frequent and fouls given more easily now to prevent the little skillful guys being simply kicked out of the game.

There was one FA cup final in the 70's, it was Leeds against someone I think, that was notoriously brutal. In that game there was one yellow card. The beeb got one of today's refs to watch the game and apply the modern interpretation of the rules to it. I think he gave something like 14 yellow cards and 2 or 3 red cards.

Being big in football often isn't very important. If you're in a position where it's important to be good in the air (eg centre back) you don't get many players under 6'00", but generally it's not that important, although it does help to have some physical strength in your team. Most teams like to have a relatively tough guy in central midfield. Having tall guys can help, especially at set pieces, but there are advantages to being small as well. Look at some of Argentina's strikers - Messi, Saviola, Tevez - They're all about 5' 7" but they're great players.

Perhaps in America you're just so used to judging guys on their size (it's obviously important to do this in american football and basketball) that there's a little too much emphasis placed on it when it comes to footy.

The UK has no volcanoes (active ones, anyway), earthquakes greater than about 0.2, or more than 2 mini tornadoes per year. We're very choosy about who we let in, though.

A lot of the 'best' football players have tiny little feet as well

Leeds vs Chelsea, I think. They hated each other. Good post.

Didn't we get a giant earthquake, about 1 on the scale, a year or two ago?

Ah thanks, I remember seeing some clips of it, some pretty nasty challenges. In a way it's kind of sad that some of the sheer physical force has been taken out of football, but it probably does make for a better game.
