1962 World Series results...
1962 World Series: New York Yankees vs. Cincinnati Reds.
Results Game 1, October 3rd, 1962, Crosley Field, Cincinnati Road Win Lifts New York to 1-0 Lead in WS The New York Yankees powered past the hometown Cincinnati Reds, 3-2, in the opener of the World Series at Crosley Field. New York starting pitcher Billy O'Dell threw 6.0 innings of 5-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Yankees now lead the series 1-0. New York took advantage of an error in the top of the ninth inning. The game was tied, 2-2, when Danny O'Connell hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put the Yankees in front, 3-2. "We're happy," O'Dell told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Yankees lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 4th, 1962, Crosley Field, Cincinnati Reds Clip Yankees, 3-2, in WS Contest The Reds have won over the Yankees, 3-2, and have tied the series at 1-1. Nellie Fox was the walk-off hero for Cincinnati. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Reds second baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home. "It feels a lot better to be tied than to be behind, even if it is only one game," Cincinnati manager Bill Brubaker said. The next game is set to be played on October 6th, 1962 at Yankee Stadium in New York. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 6th, 1962, Yankee Stadium, New York Road Win Lifts Cincinnati to 2-1 Lead in WS When the stakes were high, Sandy Koufax raised his game to match. The left-handed Koufax turned in a stellar performance in Game 3 of the World Series, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Cincinnati Reds to victory. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 7. The win broke a tie in the best-of-7 series, giving Cincinnati a 2-1 lead over the New York Yankees. Koufax earned the win, going 9 strong innings for Cincinnati. The left-hander allowed just 2 hits, while striking out 7. New York hitters had little success against him. "A complete game shutout in the World Series?" an incredulous Koufax said to reporters after the game. "Man, my arm could fall off tomorrow and I'd be happy with my career." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Reds lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 7th, 1962, Yankee Stadium, New York Raucous Yankee Stadium Crowd Propels Yankees to 4-1 Victory; Series Tied at 2 The New York Yankees took down the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 4-1 and moved into a 2-2 tie in the World Series. The largest share of the credit belongs to New York starter Eddie Fisher, who threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Fisher came through for the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth inning. With New York leading 2-1, the pitcher hit a run-scoring single. It made the score 3-1 New York. "We're one game closer to our goal," New York manager Bob Linton said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Series tied 2-2 Game 5, October 8th, 1962, Yankee Stadium, New York Critical Game 5 Goes to Host Yankees, 11-3 Riding the 2-hit performance of first baseman Norm Siebern, the New York Yankees stopped the visiting Cincinnati Reds, 11-3, in Game 5 of the World Series. Siebern was 2-3 with 2 singles and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Yankees, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 2. Willie Mays was a prime factor in the win for the Yankees. In the bottom of the fifth with one out, the four-time Most Valuable Player Award winner hit a 2-run single. He went 2-5 with 2 singles, while adding 3 RBIs and scoring once. "Every team in baseball loses," Reds manager Bill Brubaker said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back." Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Yankees lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 9th, 1962, Crosley Field, Cincinnati Yankees Defeat Reds It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious New York Yankees, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy. The Yankees took a 14-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field, winning their 5th championship after taking the series 4-2. "We've got grit," said Yankees first baseman Norm Siebern, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to." The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 112-50 record. Yankees lead series 4-2 World Series MVP: 1B Norm Siebern (New York Yankees) |
