We are in Birmingham to play a short 2 game set. The Barons won 2 of 3 from New Orleans here over the weekend. We were 8-6 against them last season when they finished 79-83 in 7th place in the South. They are 3rd in scoring with 4.77 runs per game (Jacksonville, after back to back shutout losses, is down to #14 with 3.23). The Barons are tied for 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.92 per game (Jacksonville is tied for 1st with 2.69). How can you allow 2.69 runs per game and still have a losing record???? Birmingham's run differential is -2 and ours is +7, still the best in the South and 4th overall.

Jacksonville Jays (6-7 .462 2 GB tied for 3rd place in the Southern Division) at
Birmingham Barons (6-7 .462 2 GB tied for 3rd place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Danny Coreano (25-L) (1-1 3.75 ERA 12 IP, 11 H, 2 HR, 5 BB, 7 SO) vs.
BIRM: Herman Varey (25-R) (1-1 4.66 ERA 9.2 IP, 10 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 7 SO)

After pitching a 5 hit shutout in his 1st start of the season, Coreano was lit up for 5 runs on 6 hits, 2 home runs and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts in 3 innings last time out in a loss.

Varey was 2-5 with a 5.56 ERA as a rookie last year in 12 starts with 68 IP. We faced him once and scored 3 runs on 11 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts in 7 innings in a no decision.

We are in Orlando to play the Juice a 4 game series through the weekend. They premiered a new ad campaign this week with the theme: "The Orlando Juice: Florida's Team!". That rankles. We just have to win the Southern Division before they do... They split a pair of games here with Richmond on Monday and Tuesday. We were 7-7 against them last year when they finished 83-79, 2 games ahead of us, in 4th place in the South. They led the MLB in scoring last year, but are off to a slow start this season and are last in the early going with 2.87 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to a tie for #10 with 3.87). The Juice are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.40 per game (Jacksonville is down to #3 with 2.87). Their run differential is -8 and ours is +15, best in the South and up to 3rd overall.

Jacksonville Jays (8-7 .533 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Southern Division) at
Orlando Juice (6-9 .400 3 GB tied for 5th (last) place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Jim Baucom (22-L) (3-0 0.36 ERA 25.1 IP, 21 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 17 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03) vs.
ORL: Charlie Flora (23-L) (0-0 3.14 ERA 14.1 IP, 12 H, 1 HR, 5 BB, 9 SO) Rookie

Baucom has pitched 2 straight shutouts. Last time out, he allowed 7 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts. Baucom is on a roll and the Juice are in a hitting slump, so that means he likely gets shelled today....

Flora was 2-2 with a 4.17 ERA in 6 starts and 41 IP last year. He was the #10 prospect this Spring. We have never faced him, but he is a good lefty, so that means we lose....

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF)
JACKSONVILLE
1: SS Charlie Faber (33-R .292-48-0-6-.768-1 C+)

4: 3B Tom McDowell (26-R .211-57-3-10-.615-0 C+)
5: 1B Dave Thompson (28-R .167-6-0-0-.452-0 C+)

2: 2B Tom Howard (27-R .211-57-1-3-.625-3 B+)
3: LF Ricky Perez (24-L .155-58-2-3-.545-2 B)

5: C Mike Day (33-S .212-33-2-4-.672-0 C+)
6: SS Danny Hutchinson (25-R .255-51-0-5-.616-0 B+) All-Star(02)

He is a much better defender than Bender now. He only has an average arm, but is excellent in all other areas of catching. Bender only has average arm and is below average in all other areas of catching now, when he used to be Gold Glove caliber....

Warwick has been remarkably consistent, allowing 9 hits and 4 runs in each of his 1st 3 starts.... He walked 1 and struck out 3 last time out in 5.1 innings in a loss. He has a .397 BABIP....

Davis was 17-6 with a 3.77 ERA in 215 IP last year, which makes up for 2001, when he went 7-17 with a 3.25 ERA. He pitched a 5 hit shutout last time out. He is 2-2 in 6 starts against the Jays in his career with a 3.24 ERA. 41.2 IP, 38 H, 2 HR, 11 BB, 29 SO.

Top of the Fourth

Ray McDonald swings at the first pitch and beats out an infield hit. With 1 out, Jack Washburn pokes a hit over the 2nd baseman and McDonald goes to 3rd. Washburn steals 2nd! Bert Swope flies out to deep center and McDonald tags up, but gets thrown out at home by Pete Thompson....

Bottom of the Fifth
With 2 outs, Tom Howard swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. Ricky Perez hits his 2nd triple of the game, tying the MLB record, to left center and Howard scores... 3 to 1, Juice.

Top of our order up. With 1 out, Fernando Tello takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. But our #3 and #4 hitters both fly out....

If I told you I had a pitcher who was walking 1.6 per 9 innings without allowing any home runs, you'd think he was having a pretty good year, wouldn't you? Instead, he is winless with a 5.32 ERA...

Today is Dennis Brown's 30th birthday!

We are in Louisville to play the Colonels a short 2 game set. They split 4 games at Charlotte over the weekend. We were 4-10 against them last year when they finished 84-78 in 3rd place in the South. They were the only team in the South that we had a losing record against. They are 12th in scoring with 3.79 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.89). We have scored 2 more runs than they have. They are last in the MLB in hitting at .234, but 2nd in walks (69). We are hitting better than average (.263), but are 2nd to last in walks (49). The Colonels are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.58 per game (Jacksonville is #1 with 2.79!). Their run differential is -15, 2nd worst in the MLB, and ours with +21, the 3rd best. Only 4 teams are positive right now.

Jacksonville Jays (11-8 .579 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Louisville Colonels (9-10 .474 2 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Jim Baucom (22-L) (4-0 0.80 ERA 33.2 IP, 26 H, 0 HR, 5 BB, 23 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03) vs.
LOU: Tommy Corris (24-R) (2-2 1.63 ERA 27.2 IP, 23 H, 2 HR, 5 BB, 22 SO)

Baucom gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk with 6 strikeouts in 8.1 innings last time out in a win.

Corris, who was the #6 overall pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft when Baucom was #1, is their #1 starter. He was 13-12 with a 2.94 ERA in 251 IP last year. He is 2-0 in 5 starts against the Jays in his career with a 2.31 ERA. 39 IP, 29 H, 1 HR, 11 BB, 19 SO.

Top of the Third
With 1 out, P Jim Baucom lines our first hit of the game to center and then P Tommy Corris balks him to 2nd. Leander Gooding grounds a hit up the middle and our idiot 3rd base coach, who has been expressly told to never send any of our pitchers if the play seems it might remotely be close, waves P Jim Baucom enthusiastically home, where he finds the ball waiting for him on a a platter..... Tom McDowell flies out to deep center...

Bottom of the Eighth

New Pitcher: Dave Nini (26-L). Jim Hess stays in to catch and Junior Danielson (32-R) is in to play 3rd. Well, last night, me and Coach Carl were going over how to pitch to the hitters and use our Bullpen for today's game and he mentioned Dave Nini.... I thought I sent him to Daytona? Turns out that Pia bought the train ticket, but I forgot to file the paperwork to demote him.... So I did that, pronto. RP Dave Nini (26-L) was sent to Daytona (A) and P Mike Marsh (23-R) was recalled. Marsh will go to the Bullpen and that will give us a little more flexibility when we want to give someone (Baucom) and extra day of rest. Marsh was 0-2 with a 2.60 ERA in 4 starts for the Tortugas, but his stats are not all that pretty.

We are in Memphis to play the Mules a 4 game series through the weekend. They lost a pair of games here to Orlando on Monday and Tuesday. We were 8-6 against them last year when they finished 80-82 in 6th place in the South. They are 11th in scoring with 3.90 runs per game (Jacksonville is tied for #7 with 4.10). We have scored 4 more runs than they have. We now lead the MLB in most strikeouts by our hitters with 156. The Mules are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.19 per game (Jacksonville is still #1 with 2.76). We will not finish the season #1, I am pretty sure... Their run differential is -6 and ours is now +28, up to 2nd best in the MLB, behind Buffalo (+32)!

Jacksonville Jays (13-8 .619 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Memphis Mules (8-13 .381 5 GB tied for 7th (last) place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Del Warwick (29-L) (0-2 5.32 ERA 22 IP, 35 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 12 SO) Gold Glove(02) vs.
MEM: Dave Gray (34-R) (1-2 3.76 ERA 26.1 IP, 27 H, 0 HR, 10 BB, 10 SO)

Warwick had his best game of the season last time out, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts in 5.2 innings in a no decision that we won in 13 innings.

With Rick Potts on the DL for the next three weeks, Gray is their #1 starter. He was 9-16 with a 4.00 ERA in 211.1 IP last year. He is 2-1 in 5 starts against the Jays in his career with a 5.46 ERA. 28 IP, 28 H, 1 HR, 11 BB, 15 SO.

9: P Del Warwick (29-L .000-4-0-0-.000-0 D+) Gold Glove(02)

RF Fernando Tello had better get hot this series or he will go to Daytona (A) for some seasoning.

MEMPHIS
1: SS Tony Weninger (22-R .281-64-0-4-.661-3 B+)
2: 2B Leo Toruno (30-L .280-82-3-15-.810-2 B) Silver Slugger(2: 01(SS),02)/All-Star(2: 01-02)

Weather: 70 F, Clear Skies, with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from right
Attendance: 9,754

Top of the Fourth
Tom McDowell lines an 0-2 pitch down the left field line for a double! But the next three make outs...

Bottom of the Ninth
P Del Warwick is at 101 pitches. He has allowed 3 hits and struck out 11! Gary McKellar (34-R) is in to play center. Cal Doty moves to left and Ray McDonald moves to right. The Bullpen is ready. Top of their order up. Tony Weninger grounds out to 2nd! Leo Toruno swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted! Keith Meyer grounds one to 2nd and THIS Leander Gooding throws the ball away for a 2 base error.... Nestor Gonzalez swings at an 0-2 pitch and pops out to 2nd and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!

Won - 1 to 0

We had 8 hits and made 1 error
Memphis had 3 hits and made no errors

Del Warwick (W 1-2) pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 11. 117 pitches. Most strikeouts for a Jay this season! He struck out every batter in the lineup, except SS Tony Weninger. The 7th shutout of his career and 3rd as a Jay. Game Score of 91 ties Jim Baucom when hit pitched a 1-hitter here against the Mules last September for the highest ever by a Jay!

Dave Gray (L 1-3) went 7 innings, gave us 1 run, 7 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4.

Jacksonville Jays (14-8 .636 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Memphis Mules (8-14 .364 6 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division)

Gilchrist, who is currently 2nd in the MLB in ERA behind Jim Baucom, will likely not be after this game, with all their lefty sluggers... He gave up 1 run on 7 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts in 7.1 innings last time out in a no decision that we lost in 11 innings.

Foltz was 13-15 with a 4.05 ERA in 220 IP last year. He is 4-3 in 8 starts against the Jays in his career with a 4.73 ERA. 53.1 IP, 57 H, 1 HR, 25 BB, 35 SO.

Top of the First
Cal Doty swings at a 3-2 pitch and triples to center! His 3rd triple of the season! Fernando Tello grounds out to the pitcher and Doty has to hold... How can someone tattoo the ball the way he did in Spring Training hit so tamely once the season starts? Ray McDonald strikes out.... Yep... Tom McDowell lines one hard, straight to the Gold Glove right fielder, but Ron Alario clanks it for a 2 base error and Doty scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Jack Washburn strikes out...

Bottom of the First
Steve Gress swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 3rd. Rafael Jimenez grounds one to 1st, but Jack Washburn boots it... Already his 4th error... Keith Meyer lines out to right. Bottom of the Second

Top of the Third
With 1 out, Ray McDonald doubles to right. Tom McDowell lines a hit to center, too hard for McDonald to score. Jack Washburn pops out to right and McDonald stays put... P Charlie Foltz tries to pick McDowell off at 1st and throws the ball away for an error and McDonald scores! Tie Game: 2 to 2!

Nestor Gonzalez swings at the first pitch and doubles to left center and Meyer scores... 4 to 3, Mules. Roger Beaudin strikes out looking! Ron Alario grounds out to 3rd!

Top of the Sixth

Leander Gooding draws a walk. Charlie Faber lines a hit to right center and Gooding beats the throw to 3rd! Editor's Note: P Dale Gilchrist is the best hitter available right now, but if I let him bat, the A.I. will have him bunt... PH Junior Danielson (32-R) grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6, and Gooding holds at 3rd... Cal Doty grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, but Danielson took out the shortstop with his slide and Gooding scores. Tie Game: 4 to 4!

The Hartford Whalers are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games at home with Rochester. We were 5-3 against them last year when they finished 69-93 in 7th place in the North. We have never lost a season series to them. They are 6th in scoring with 4.00 runs per game (Jacksonville is #8 with 3.89). The Whalers are 15th in fewest runs allowed with 4.56 per game (Jacksonville is still #1 with 2.81). Their run differential is -14 and ours is +29, still 2nd to Buffalo's +55.
