NIRL MVPs CHOSEN IN FIRST AND SECOND DIVISIONS
The initial season of the North Island Recreational League has just concluded and it is now time to honor the standout players in both leagues... Jeff Davis of the Kofa Kings in the NIRL First Division and Tuck Thompson of the Dutton Coyotes in the NIRL Second Division were acclaimed the 1950 Most Valuable Players by a vote of the league players.

In the NIRL First Division the top three votegetters were all pitchers, showing how important pitching proved to be in the first year of the league... Kofa's Jeff Davis paced his club to the pennant with a 14-4 record and an excellent 1.97 ERA in his 27 starting assignments... the 30-year-old right-hander Davis struck out 96 in his 203 innings, while walking 70 with 10 complete games... he topped the league in ERA and shutouts with 7.

Morgan Powell of the third place Union Heights Hackers came in second place in the MVP balloting... the 25-year-old southpaw was tied with Davis for the most wins and finished second in three categories with a 2.01 ERA, 180 strikeouts and 5 shutouts... Powell posted a fine 14-9 mark in 28 starts... he was also number one with 215 innings.

Third place in the NIRL First Division MVP poll went to 27-year-old John Metz, the ace right-hander of the second place New Yerby Yankees... he chalked up 13 wins and 9 defeats in 24 starting assignments with an impressive 2.29 ERA (3rd) and he led the league with 16 complete games and 185 strikeouts... Metz worked 212 innings (2nd) this year and recorded 5 shutouts (2nd-tied).

However, it was a totally different story in the more offensive-minded NIRL Second Division... all three top votegetters were position players that wielded good sticks... the Second Division Most Valuable Player was second baseman Tuck Thompson of the pennant-winning Dutton Coyotes... at age 25 he batted .407, second best in the league with 55 hits (1st), 9 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 18 RBIs, scored 29 runs (2nd) and stole 25 bases (1st)... Thompson also played standout defense and won a Golden Glove... plus he played all 30 games, not missing any in the season.

Thompson's biggest competition for the MVP award was his teammate, 26-year-old Peter Wallace, who only batted a lowly .220, but made up for it with 7 homers (1st) and 29 RBIs (2nd) in 30 games... Wallace was a prime player in Dutton's very successful season... he didn't miss a game this season... first baseman Wallace also played fine defense and won a Golden Glove, too.

Jackson second baseman Buddy Boyce wound up third in the MVP poll... at 32, he showed he could still play with .306 BA in 30 games and sparked the Jackalopes to the second spot in the standings... Boyce topped the NIRL Second Division with 31 runs batted in, while racking up 6 doubles, 1 triple, 3 roundtrippers, 21 runs and 10 stolen bases... he was also one of the better glove men at second base.

MY LIFE IS NIFTY IN 1950

By golly, it was... even though it is now September and school is back in session... EC is going to a new school, the fifth grade already... remember, we moved into half a house a few months ago on Downman Road in what would eventually be called New Orleans East and chocked full of middle-class subdivisions... it was just a lot of undeveloped woods and swamp land at this time.

Goodness gracious, we had very own huge personal playground in the forest behind our houses... we would spent endless hours and hours climbing and playing in the very tall trees... probably 30 or 40 feet high... it's a wonder that none of us got hurt or seriously injured... Jesus had to be watching out for us... we certainly weren't... thank you, Jesus... we would build tree houses in them for our secret society clubhouses... absolutely and positively no girls allowed....nary a one... no worry, we are safe from prosecution and litigation... this is way before women's liberation and the ERA came into being.

We all had Daisy BB guns... we would go hunting in the forest, shoot birds and then sorta roast them over a fire like we saw cowboys, Indians and cavemen do in the movies... boy, roasted bird looked really good in a technicolor movie... especially when Robin Hood and his band of Merrymen enjoyed a ravenous feast deep in the heart of Sherwood Forest, where they were safe from that dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham... but to be truthful and honest... we ate a lot of bad roasted birds back in that day... mainly, because it was mainly raw... we wouldn't wait long enough for it to be cooked... raw pigeons, robins, bluejays and sparrows helped us keep our weight in line... climbing trees and playing war games and cowboys and Indians also helped keep us in shape... Zeph, Frankie, Nookie, Peter, Oscar and me had a lot of fun on Downman Road... life was good back then... life was really good and nifty in 1950.

I just finished revising the rosters for the NIRL 1951 season.

Each team got two newcomers.

Season will be starting soon.

I'm really enjoying the North Island Recreational League... after just one 30-game season, where I played out all the games from the sixth inning on, I find at the beginning of the second year, I am pretty familiar with most of the players in the league and the teams... this is a special feeling for me... I think after about 3-4 seasons, I will know every player in the league very well... now that's immersion, ain't it... that is OOTP Heaven to me.

This is exciting to see these 12 teams up close and personal... my Islandian Pro Alliance is just too big to cover with its 64 teams... I would get close to 8 of the teams in the playoffs, which I would play out sixth inning on, so I could make most of the lineup and pitching changes... but I really didn't know a lot about the other 56 teams, except for a few stars.

I have to do the schedule again... I only play Sunday games in the NIRL over 30 weekends... the OOTP scheduler put them all in the first 30 days of the season... I have to adjust it manually.

Hopefully, there is a way to save the weekend schedule and re-import it some way... I have find out on the OOTP20 Discussions Forum.

Darn it, my game date is now out of synch... caused by me.

I changed the start date from March to April in the Schedule Editor... HOWEVER, the Global Settings (Schedule Settings) is set for March and is now grayed out... probably can't be changed except in the Offseason... so my game date is out of synch.

All of my league events notices are now out of synch... my new schedule begins April 1... got a league event notice that the "season will end on April 5th"... my new schedule runs through mid August.

Not a good situation.

Hope some of you game experts have a solution... is it possible to edit the Start Date somewhere in the game files and get the dates in synch?

I have posted on the OOTP20 and OOTP19 Discussions Forum, but you rarely get help there when it come to my problems... I guess it's because I play a somewhat quirky form of the game... nobody else does it like me... so I get no answers.

It looks like the only thing I can do is use the "restore" in the game... I think I completely backed up all files at the end of the first season.

Boy, I hate to lose all the free agents I created... all the rosters changes... and all the batting and pitching lineups... plus the manual schedule... and I had already done the preseason preview for one of the division... I was excited and ready to go with the 1951 season.

Wish me luck with the "restore", whatever that comes out to be.

I just hope it is an easy procedure to use with simple instructions... as you know, EC is not gifted when it comes to computers.

Fingers crossed that the backup is all safe and well. Losing all that stuff really is a pain, but I find a couple of days is usually enough to muster up the enthusiasm to redo it all.

I've become quite enamoured with the small league and a small calendar myself! Really helps zero-in on as many small stories as possible.

I am really now a big fan of the small league with a short schedule.

Wish I was a creative writer, so I could bring the some of the individual players alive... a small, short league would give you time to do that.

Great News!

The restore went well... was simple... now I just have to go through all the work I did to get ready for the new season... I even have to redo the Awards as I backed it up at the end of the season and not at the end of the offseason.

The good thing is that the NIRL will live another day and very soon.

Can't wait to start the 1951 season.

All is set for the 1951 North Island Recreational League's second season.

All rosters have been completed... pitching rotations, batting lineups and depth charts are done.

Each of the 12 got three new players... most of the them made the rosters... and some look like impact players...a few of them were sent to the reserve rosters... they were subpar quality.

This year it will only be a 20-game schedule... this is more like a recreational or semi-pro league was back in the 50s.

I am now working on a preseason preview of the upcoming season.

NIRL FIRST DIVISION WELCOMES DUTTON AND JACKSON
The North Island Recreational League is starting its second season tomorrow afternoon... there have been several changes since last year... for starters, the league will only play a 20-game schedule this year, down from 30 in its inaugural season... the players requested this, saying the season was too long for them... they needed more time to take a summer vacation... the Boys of Summer have real lives, too... the new shorter schedule will make this possible... the season will start in the first week of March and through mid July... also two teams have been promoted to the First Division and two teams have been relegated to the Second Division... this will be a very interesting experiment and one to watch.

The NIRL First Division will now feature last year's top two clubs from the NIRL Second Division... pennant-winning Dutton (20-10) and runner-up Jackson (17-13) will now engage with the likes of Kofa (20-10), New Yerby (18-12) and Union Heights (16-14) for the league title... one would thinks the folks in Stockdale (14-16) would be a little apprehensive and worried a little in the new alignment.

Things will change in the NIRL Second Division, too, with last-year league doormats, Wafford (12-18) and Avalon (10-20) dropping down and joining leftovers Joliet (15-15), Kinston (15-15), West Chester (13-17) and Theodore (10-12).

So what can we expect this year in the North Island Recreational League... the promotion/relegation element should produce two excellent races... a few oldtimers have called it a day and hung up the spikes, while there will be a few fresh newcomers taking their places... on the surface, you would think the First Division is filled with good teams... only Stockdale looks to be out-of-the-running... the other five clubs should create quite a hot-and-heavy hassle for the pennant... same thing in the NIRL Second Division... that race is wide open with everybody thinking they have a shot at the pennant... both leagues look very evenly-matched... no one team is likely to dominate.

The key to the season will be the newcomers... one or two strong hitters could make a big difference to contenders... a talented new hurler would also certainly shake things up... good pitching dominated the inaugural season... if you had a workhorse starter, you did well... and it looks like it will be more of the same this year... a star pitcher could really turn a team around.

Last year's First Division champion, the Kofa Kings (20-10), is a fine club... last year pitching was the key in the First Division... the league battting average was only .246... the Kings only hit .243 as a team, but counter-balanced that with some standout pitching, sparked by the First Division Most Valuable Player, Jeff Davis, who was 14-4 with a superb 1.96 ERA and 7 shutouts... the Kings' main bats were Zach Bailey (.299 BA), Adam Morris (.296 BA) and Joey Mason (.291 BA)... Kofa's defense was outstanding as well... Kofa has added a solid infielder with a potent bat at second base, Bobby Seals... another newcomer to the lineup is power-hitting left fielder Dane Williams... the Kings are not likely to abandon their throne in the First Division very soon... they are an improved club and will be a serious factor in the race.

The Dutton Coyotes (20-10) are pretty much the same team as last year... they added a pitcher/infielder Stuart Johnson and and shortstop Bill Harlow... both will have to earn their spots in the lineup... both of them were just average players in high school... good field, no hit... but the Coyotes still have a fine team and won the Second Division flag despite losing their top starter Allen Buchanan (10-4/2.67) at midseason... returnees are the Second Division Most Valuable Player and top batter, Tuck Thompson (.407 BA), Rory Bassett (.386 BA), Jack Puckett (.370 BA), Karl Krieger (.315 BA)... Bernie Bartlett (7-3/4.09 ERA) and Nick Walters (1-1/3.18) will be the main pitchers... Buchanan may not return this year... he is still recovering from elbow surgery... he will sorely missed... Dutton does everything well... the defense is much improved with the addition of infielders Harlow and Johnson... the Coyotes should be a strong pennant contender in the First Division... offense dominated the Second Division... Dutton hit .293 to lead the division... the league batting average was .265... it will be interesting to see if Dutton and Jackson hit as well in the First Division.

The New Yerby Yankees (18-12) fought tooth-and-nail last year against the Kofa Kings (20-10) and fell 2 games short... the Yanks got by with some very good pitching from John Metz (13-9/2.29 ERA)... but the poor defense hurt them... it probably was the difference maker between the two clubs... the core of their offense is back with the top hitter in the First Division, John Harper (.363 BA), along with Jake Cummings (.353 BA), Rex Markham (.322 BA) and Matt Wheeler (.288 BA)... New Yerby has added some pop to the lineup with longballer first sacker Buddy Harding and shortstop Sonny Malinowski... that's a positive step in the right direction... the Yankees will be a contender again this year... mainly because of Metz on the mound... more runs from Harding and Malinowski would really close the gap with the Kofa Kings.

The Union Heights Hackers (16-14 )are a middle of the pack club, but improved this season... the offense is a little better, so is the defense... they already have a bunch of productive hitters in Rich Davis (.307 BA), who topped the First Division with 7 homers and ranked third in RBIs with 22... Robby Neill (.273 BA) led the league with 25 RBIs... helping out, too, will be a solid core of good bats, Ray Shearer (.289 BA), Teddy Orr (.287 BA) and Adrian Bryant (.276 BA)... plus two new rookies in the lineup, second baseman Joey Madera and third baseman Mike Romano, may give the Hackers more punch at the plate... Madera is also outstanding with the glove... still around on the mound is ace starter Morgan Powell (14-9/2.01 ERA) and his fine relief, Daniel Morgado (1-2/1.88 ERA/2 saves/12 G)... Union Heights (16-14) came in third last year behind Kofa (20-10) and New Yerby (18-12), but they just might make an upward move with the new bats and defense in their lineup.

The Jackson Jackalopes (17-13) were right up their with Dutton last year, batting a strong .277 and topped the league in scoring runs, tied with the Coyotes... but they faded badly down the stretch and lost to the Coyotes by 3 games... while the Jacks can hit, they were lousy defenders and it cost them...their pitching staff couldn't match Dutton, either... Jalen McCoy (12-5/3.05 ERA) had a great first half, but lost his starting role in a second-half slump... he dropped to the number-three man after Jesse Carson (4-5/2.88 ERA) and Dusty Branson (0-2/2.59 ERA)... all three will compete for the top spot this season, along with rookie Pat Romenesko... Jackson can hit well, but defense and pitching will keep them down in the standings in the First Division... unless the offense hits really well, it looks like tough sledding for the Jacks in their new league... it doesn't appear the Jackalopes got any bargains from their rookies... all are just run-of-the-mill ballplayers.

Lastly and probably the leastest in the league will be the Stockdale Mustangs... in spite of leading the league in runs scored, they came in fourth last year at 14-16 and 6 games behind Kofa... they have a few solid batters in Ben Wasco (.317 BA), Patrick King (.304 BA), Lon Simmons (.280 BA), Randy Robinson (.274 BA) and Mike Holston (.259 BA)... but sadly Stockdale doesn't have zilch on the hill... they used 7 hurlers last year and none of them did very well... Raymond Koch (5-7/4.04 ERA) was the best of the lot... however, their is some optimism in Stockdale... the Mustangs have a couple of new players with crackerjack bats, first baseman Andy Kessler and second baseman Kasey Clark... the offense should be better, but the Mustangs sill lack pitching... look out NIRL Second Division... Stockdale just might be headed your way soon.

NIRL FIRST DIVISION PRESEASON POLL
1. KOFA KINGS
2. Dutton Coyotes
3. New Yerby Yankees
4. Union Heights Hackers
5. Jackson Jackalopes
6. Stockdale Mustangs
