Bracket G - Round Three
#16 - Gorman Thomas vs. #4-Willie Stargell
As the final #16 seed in the tournament, Gorman Thomas has already gone much further than he should have in the tournament, but today Willie Stargell ended his remarkable run and moves on with a 26-22 win. #11-Kevin Mitchell vs. #7-Dave Winfield In a very close game Dave Winfield continued to show his consistency hitting another 21 home runs, while Kevin Mitchell's totals slipped this round to 20 and is now eliminated with Dave Winfield moving on to take on Willie Stargell. |

The Sweet 16
We're now down to the final 16 players. I've updated the brackets here:
OOTP HR Derby - Home Run 2 Derby 2013 And to prevent having to take multiple screen shots I've created a sweet 16 bracket here: OOTP HR Derby - HR Derby Sweet 16 I'll be resuming on Thursday night when the tournament resumes. If you'd like to make predictions based on just the sweet 16 you can do so as well through the link. |

Sweet 16 - Part 1
#1-Barry Bonds vs. #14-Ralph Kiner
Both Barry Bonds and Ralph Kiner saw their home runs bounce back this year, but Bonds moves on 33-28, bringing the end to Ralph Kiner's run from the play-in round to the Sweet 16. (All I can say to this is ugh...) #1-Mike Schmidt vs. #3-Mickey Mantle This one came right down to the wire, as Mike Schmidt narrowly moves on, knocking off Mickey Mantle 20-19. |

Sweet 16 - Part 2
#5-Carlos Delgado vs. #2-David Ortiz
Carlos Delgado hits 22 home runs to advance to the next round. David Ortiz hit 17 home runs in the loss. #4-Willie Stargell vs. #7-Dave Winfield After this round I'm beginning to think of Willie Stargell as one of the favorites after he hit 33 home runs to easily defeat Dave Winfield 33-9 ------------------------------ I'm a little surprised with both of these results. Winfield fell off a cliff this round for no good reason. |

What a disappointing showing for Winfield! Ugh. Guess ill be rooting for Ruth and Delgado now. I always enjoyed Carlos as a bluejay.

#8-Yogi Berra vs. #2 - Ken Griffey, Jr.
Yogi Berra continues his tournament run, knocking off Ken Griffey, Jr. 20-17 to advance to the round of 8. #9-Eric Davis vs. #10-Willie Aikens It was a close match between Eric Davis and Willie Aikens, but in the end Aikens edged out Davis 23-21 to set-up his next game against Yogi Berra. |

Sweet 16 - Part 4
#1-Babe Ruth vs. #3-Willie Mays
Babe Ruth continues to see his numbers drop over the past two rounds, hitting just 28 home runs. However, that was enough to move on as Willie Mays hit just 18 and is now eliminated. #4-Duke Snider vs. #2-Jimmie Foxx This was a very close, and very good battle between Duke Snider and Jimmie Foxx with both players separated by just one home run. Jimmie Foxx ends up advancing to the next round by the score of 29-28 setting up a matchup between Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx, with the winner advancing to the Final Four. |

The end is near. We're now down to just the final 8 players:
Definitely a couple of surprises with Berra vs Aikens the best example. Hopefully the round of 8 will be the season where Barry finally bites the dust. |

So these are the players representing each bracket, eh? There certainly were a lot of upsets here. Only three #1 seeds out of eight.

Yep, those are the winners of each of the 8 brackets. There definitely were quite a few upsets. Especially with an 8 vs 10 facing off to go to the final four.

Elite 8 Preview
We're now down to the final 8. Before I hit that sim to next year button I wanted to take a look at the player's total home runs for the tournament so far. Judging by this it appears that we're heading for a Ruth-Bonds final showdown, but as Yogi Berra has proven you just need to hit more than your opponent, or as he once said "It ain't over til it's over".
Tournament home runs: Ruth - 147 Bonds - 136 Foxx - 117 Stargell - 108 Delgado - 104 Schmidt - 97 Aikens - 94 Berra - 85 Another thing I wanted to check out is how the player is doing overall, because one out of many test runs I had both finalists fall apart for a 1-0 final where they each played in about 5 of the 100 games. That appeared to be a fluke, but just something I'm keeping an eye on. Not sure how to fix it other than force the player to start, but regardless, based on last year's WAR everyone still is contributing at a high level: Bonds - 10.0 Schmidt -9.4 Ruth - 9.3 Aikens - 8.6 Foxx - 8.5 Stargell - 7.5 Delgado - 7.2 Berra - 6.0 And then finally the matchups: #1-Barry Bonds vs. #1-Mike Schmidt #8-Yogi Berra vs. #10-Willie Aikens #5-Carlos Delgado vs. #4-Willie Stargell #1-Babe Ruth vs. #2-Jimmie Foxx The top two matchups will be done today, and the bottom two tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed that Bonds will finally see his demise, but I wouldn't hold your breath either... |

Elite 8 - Matchup 1
#8-Yogi Berra vs. #10-Willie Aikens
Yogi Berra has knocked off some big names in the tournament so far, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and Ken Griffey, Jr. He hasn't really dominated anyone yet, winning by 4 against Howard Johnson in the opening round, taking advantage of a poor round by Ted Williams to knock him off 27-19, and beating both Yaz and Griffey by 3 each. So once again Berra had a low total with 20 home runs, and a narrow margin of victory (4 home runs), but Yogi Berra becomes the first member of the Final Four after defeating Willie Aikens 20-16. |
