1960 All-Star Game results...
July 11th, 1960, Municipal Stadium, Kansas City
Hector Lopez Wins MVP in NL Loss to AL Despite his best efforts, game MVP Hector Lopez's NL All-Stars couldn't overcome the powerful AL squad in the annual All-Star Game. "We tried our best, but did you see the talent in that lineup?" Lopez was quoted as saying after the game. "I'm honored to be named MVP of the game. To stand among the greatest stars of the game and be declared the best among them is truly an honor, even if we didn't end up winning the game. I had fun, and I think the fans did as well." The AL All-Stars triumphed in the game by a final score of 10-5 in this year's game at Municipal Stadium. All-Star Game MVP: 2B Hector Lopez (Philadelphia Phillies) |

NL pennant tiebreaker game results
October 3rd, 1960, Forbes Field, Pittsburgh
Pirates Win with Late Heroics The Pittsburgh Pirates handed the Cincinnati Reds a 4-2 defeat in 11 innings at Forbes Field. Shortstop Ernie Banks starred for Pittsburgh. He went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 3 RBIs and scoring twice. The first-place Pirates hiked their record to 94-61. The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the 11th. With one out, Banks hit a fastball from Sandy Koufax for a 2-run home run. The Pirates, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win. "Our team showed some gumption," said Banks. "I like it." 1960 World Series results
1960 World Series: Washington Senators vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Results Game 1, October 6th, 1960, Forbes Field, Pittsburgh World Series Game 1 Victory for Mossi and Pittsburgh The World Series got off to a quiet start, with the host Pittsburgh Pirates taking a low-scoring, 3-0 win over the Washington Senators. Pittsburgh left-hander Don Mossi was marvelous at Forbes Field. The Pirates now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Tied up with the Senators in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Pirates got a boost from first baseman Gordy Coleman. With a runner on 1st, Coleman saw a 2-1 changeup from Harvey Haddix and hit a 2-run home run to break the stalemate and put Pittsburgh on top, 2-0. "When Don is on, he can really move the ball around," said Pittsburgh manager Vince Barton. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 7th, 1960, Forbes Field, Pittsburgh SSP Banks Lights Up Senators for 5 RBIs as Pirates Extend Lead Behind the big bat of shortstop Ernie Banks, the Pittsburgh Pirates have opened up a healthy early lead in the World Series. The Pirates topped the Washington Senators, 10-7, at Forbes Field in Game 2, and now hold a 2-0 edge in the best-of-7 series. Banks was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 5 runs and scored once to power Pittsburgh to victory. The game came to a dramatic end. In the bottom of the ninth, with Pittsburgh trailing 7-6, Banks hit a screwball from Bill Henry for a grand slam home run, giving the Pirates the walk-off win. "It's a thrill to get that kind of win," Banks said. Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Pirates lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 9th, 1960, Griffith Stadium, Washington Senators Hammered by Colavito, Fall Further Behind in WS Riding the 2-hit performance of left fielder Rocky Colavito, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a road win against the Washington Senators, 4-3, in Game 3 of the World Series. Colavito was 2-4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 0. New York native Rocky Colavito had a clutch at-bat in the top of the seventh for the Pirates. With Pittsburgh trailing 3-2, he hit a 2-run home run. "Hitting 2 home runs in the World Series is a fairy tale," Colavito said in the clubhouse following the game. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Pirates lead series 3-0 Game 4, October 10th, 1960, Griffith Stadium, Washington Washington Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1 Bob Buhl was not about to watch an opponent celebrate a championship on his home field. The right-hander pitched the Washington Senators to victory at Griffith Stadium, staving off the Pittsburgh Pirates, who remain one game away from a title. Buhl threw 9.0 innings of 2-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Senators to 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. Buhl, who was born in Saginaw, Michigan, threw 132 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 2 runs. "We came out on top and that's all I can ask for," said Buhl. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Pirates lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 11th, 1960, Griffith Stadium, Washington Pirates Top Senators in World Series Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better. It was the latter case in 1960, as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Washington Senators 13-10 tonight at Griffith Stadium to win the World Series. It was the 9th title in franchise history. "When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Pittsburgh shortstop Ernie Banks, who was named series MVP. The Pirates took the series 4-1. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and a 94-61 record. Pittsburgh manager Vince Barton grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Banks's words. "Ernie said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said. Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come. Pirates win series 4-1 World Series MVP: SSP Ernie Banks (Pittsburgh Pirates) |

1961 All-Star Game results...
July 11th, 1961, Tiger Stadium, Detroit
Young Star Helps Propel NL to Win in Midseason Classic There's a whole lot of pride on the line when the best baseball players throughout Major League Baseball gather for the all-star game. It was no different this year, as the NL bested the AL by a score of 7-6 in a spirited contest played at Tiger Stadium. "It might be a little lower intensity than the regular season or playoffs, but everyone in that clubhouse still wants to win this game," said Orlando Cepeda of the NL, who was named the game MVP. All-Star Game MVP: 1B Orlando Cepeda (Pittsburgh Pirates) |
