Spring Training is here! And we have yet to solve a single roster issue! We began our schedule of exhibition games with a 2 to 1 loss in 10 innings to Buffalo at our training complex in Daytona Beach. Jim Baucom (22-L) pitched 4 shutout innings and Dave Nini (26-L) took the loss. I think that will be the theme of this season: great starting pitching spoiled by the Bullpen..... Cross your fingers for no injuries! Our depth is very thin.... Last edited by Questdog; 10-28-2020 at 04:52 PM. |

We completed our exhibition schedule with a 5 to 1 loss at Charlotte's training complex. We ended up with a 13-17 record, tied for 5th in our division, but we were not trying to win ball games. We were trying to find our 5th starter and sort out the bums in our Bullpen. Richmond had the best record in our division at 17-13 and Orlando had the worst at 11-19, also the worst in all the Grapefruit League. Buffalo had the best record at 22-8. We made it through the whole schedule without any significant injuries until the very last game, when CF Gary McKellar (34-R) came up with back tightness that Trudy the Trainer says will keep him out for a couple of weeks. He was put on the DL. 3B Ray Teague (28-S) of New Orleans led all players with 31 hits and a .456 BA. Jimmy Ward (29-L) of Indianapolis led with 5 HR and LF Tim Dawson (27-R) of New Orleans led with 18 RBI. We did not get any more trade offers that were remotely close to being tempting. Editor's Note: I tried the '"Shop and take a player at random" mechanic for RF Rob Worms and 2B Leander Gooding, but no players were offered who were making less than double their salaries... Three players were cut, two of whom have experience with the Jays: P Mike Gaddis (35-R), who led the 2001 Jays in wins, and RP Brad Kendrick (28-R), who was 1-2 with 1 SV and a 4.87 ERA in 2001 and 2002. Next up: Meet the Jays! Last edited by Questdog; 10-28-2020 at 08:46 PM. |

Opening Day starters are highlighted in blue. Opening Day Roster Pitchers Starting Rotation Jim Baucom 22 year old left-hander from Indianapolis, Indiana. 6' 8" 205 lbs. (+2) $162,600. The first overall pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. A big, tall string bean who can hit 100 MPH in the radar gun with his over the top fastball. He also throws a slider, changeup and splitter. A decent fielder for a pitcher and one of the best moves to 1st I have ever seen. In his rookie season, he hit .137 and struck out in over half of his at bats and did not draw a walk, but last year he cut his strikeouts in half, hit .240 and drew 6 walks. He is an excellent bunter. He is very smart on and off the field. He made the All-Star team in each of his first two seasons and led the MLB in SO last year. Was 2-0 with a 1.25 ERA. 21.2 IP, 11 H, 0 HR, 2 BB, 29 SO. 2003 (MLB): 14-11 2.13 ERA 258.1 IP, 205 H, 9 HR, 51 BB, 216 S), 1.8/7.5 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): 11-14 3.01 ERA 248 IP, 230 H, 17 HR, 70 BB, 174 SO, 2.5/6.3 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2001 (B): 15-5 2.09 ERA 220 IP, 133 H, 9 HR, 66 BB, 197 SO, 2.7/8.1 BB/SO per 9 for Jackson of the Southern League. Was named Pitcher of the Year. Del Warwick 29 year old left-hander from Amarillo, Texas. 5' 11" 186 lbs. (+5) $157,875. Acquired in a trade with Rochester in December 2002 for Rookie of the Year RF Glen Lewis. 95 MPH over the top fastball with a curve and changeup. He won a Gold Glove in 2001 and has a superb move to first. A decent hitter for a pitcher with a .213 career BA and a superb bunter with 43 SH over the last three seasons. A very hard worker and a nice guy. Was 1-0 with 1 SV and a 1.47 ERA this Spring. 18.1 IP, 13 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 18 SO. 2003 (MLB): 14-12 2.60 ERA 242 IP, 229 H, 18 HR, 62 BB, 139 SO, 2.3/5.2 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): 18-10 3.04 ERA 254.2 IP, 214 H, 18 HR, 88 BB, 157 SO, 3.1/5.5 BB/SO per 9 for Rochester 2001 (MLB): 17-11 3.37 ERA 237.2 IP, 221 H, 20 HR, 88 BB, 156 SO, 3.3/5.9 BB/SO per 9 for Rochester Dale Gilchrist 25 year old right-hander from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 5' 11" 187 lbs. (+7) $90,000. Our 3rd round pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. 96 MPH over the top fastball with a curve, slider, changeup and fork ball. Not a big fellow, but can throw all day. Has put on weight and looked sluggish this Spring. His fielding used to be excellent, but he was not very good in Spring Training, being slow to get off the mound. Has a decent move to 1st. Career .276 hitter and only struck out 4 times in 60 AB last season. Not so good at bunting. Very smart, but seems to be out for #1 more so than most. He seems very injury prone and we were hoping to trade him this Winter, but the only offers we got for him were not anything we wanted. Was 0-1 with 1 SV and a 2.70 ERA this Spring. 13.1 IP, 10 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 6 SO. 2003 (MLB): 11-8 2.24 ERA 169 IP, 125 H, 9 HR, 63 BB, 82 SO, 3.4/4.4 BB/SO Per 9 for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): 9-11 3.72 ERA 193.1 IP, 175 H, 15 HR, 85 BB, 114 SO, 4.0/5.3 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2001 (B): 16-5 2.10 ERA 206 IP, 164 H, 5 HR, 76 BB, 176 3.3/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for El Paso of the Texas League Danny Coreano 25 year old left-hander from San Cristobal, the Dominican Republic. 6' 3" 200 lbs. (no change) $55,000. Our 5th round pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. 93 MPH fastball with a curve, slider and changeup. Not a good fielder, but has a good move to 1st. Only hit .109 as a rookie, but .206 last year. He is an average bunter. Very smart, but also seems to be out for #1 more so than most, but a lot of pitchers are like that. Was 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA this Spring. 12.2 IP, 13 H, 0 HR, 10 BB, 8 SO. 2003 (MLB): 8-6 3.53 ERA 117.1 IP, 115 H, 8 HR, 38 BB, 61 SO, 2.9/4.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): 8-14 4.17 ERA 162 IP, 194 H, 11 HR, 51 BB, 73 SO, 2.8/4.1 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2001 (B): 16-8 2.08 ERA 199 IP, 173 H, 8 HR, 59 BB, 129 2.7/5.8 BB/SO per 9 for Tulsa of the Texas League P Al Calice 23 year old right-hander from Chicago, Illinois. 6' 3" 193 lbs. (-1) $16,000. Rookie. Our 1st pick (4th overall) in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. 98 MPH over the top fastball with a curve and slider. Not a very good fielder and only has a mediocre move to 1st. Only hit .108 for Daytona last year. He is a good bunter. Was 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA this Spring. 19 IP, 18 H, 0 HR, 11 BB, 9 SO. 2003 (MLB): 1-0 2.25 ERA 4 G, 1 GS, 16 IP, 17 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 8 SO, 3.4/4.5 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2003 (A): 7-7 3.47 ERA 1 SV, 27 G, 20 GS, 137.1 IP, 133 H, 4 HR, 59 BB, 88 SO, 3.9/5.8 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona 2002 (B): 3-4 2.34 ERA 10 SV 41 G, 2 GS, 61.2 IP, 41 H, 2 HR, 32 BB, 48 SO, 4.7/7.0 BB/SO per 9 for Asheville of the Southern League Bullpen Bill Grant 33 year old left-hander from Mentor, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland. on Lake Erie). 6' 2" 188 lbs. (+2) $52,800 Acquired in a trade with Rochester in February, 2001. 96 MPH cut fastball with a curve. A decent fielder and a great move to 1st. 2 for 6 in his career as a hitter without a strikeout and a decent bunter. Likes to play cards in the clubhouse. Made the All-Star team each of the past two seasons. Was 0-0 with 1 SV and a 2.44 ERA this Spring. 17.2 IP, 13 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 13 SO. 2003 (MLB): 6-9 3.20 ERA 15 SV 98.1 IP, 92 H, 7 HR, 36 BB, 85 SO, 3.3/7.8 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): 2-9 2.27 ERA 20 SV 95.1 IP, 67 H, 5 HR, 39 BB, 86 SO, 3.7/8.1 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2001 (MLB): 6-3 3.33 ERA 7 SV 108 IP, 96 H, 9 HR, 45 BB, 92 SO 3.8/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville Roger Wallace 28 year old right-hander from Brooklyn, New York. 6' 2" 192 lbs. (+2) $24,000. Acquired in a trade with Columbus in February, 2001. 95 MPH over the top fastball that he throws with 2 seams and 4. He also throws a changeup. He gets a lot more fly balls than ground balls. A decent fielder, but not such a great move to first. 1 for 9 with 4 SO in his MLB career, but is a good bunter. Does not like being in the limelight, being a shy fellow, but he is a good guy. Was 1-0 with 1 SV and an 0.63 ERA this Spring. 14.1 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 10 SO. 2003 (MLB): 6-5 3.27 ERA 2 SV 77 IP, 81 H, 7 HR, 22 BB, 54 SO, 2.6/6.3 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): 5-6 3.25 ERA 3 SV 88.2 IP, 87 H, 7 HR, 27 BB, 71 SO, 2.7/7.2 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2001 (MLB): 5-3 3.86 ERA 3 SV 95.2 IP, 96 H, 12 HR, 31 BB, 80 SO, 2.9/7.5 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville Robbie Hopley 29 year old right-hander from Nassau, the Bahamas. 6' 6" 200 lbs. $26,000. Acquired in a trade with Syracuse in April, 2002. 97 MPH cut fastball and curve. An excellent fielder, but is very slow to home and does not have a good move to first. His move is not even good enough to be called bad. 0 for 2 in his career as a hitter, but a very good bunter. A quiet, unassuming fellow, but has a reputation for being cost conscious. Has never allowed a home run on the MLB and would be a star reliever if he did not walk 5 batters per 9 innings. Was 0-0 with a 2.02 ERA this Spring. 13.1 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 8 BB, 10 SO. 2003 (MLB): 2-3 3.17 ERA 4 SV, 59.2 IP, 54 H, 0 HR, 31 BB, 45 SO, 4.7/6.8 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): 3-1 3.21 ERA 28 IP, 22 H, 0 HR, 19 BB, 23 SO, 6.1/7.4 BB/SO per 0 for Jacksonville 2001 (MLB): 4-1 2.72 ERA 49.2 IP, 33 H, 0 HR, 28 BB, 41 SO, 5.1/7.4 BB/SO per 0 for Syracuse Dave Nini 26 year old left-hander from Moreno Valley, California (just southeast of Riverside). 6' 3" 200 lbs. $16,000. Was our 7th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. 97 MPH over the top fastball with a splitter and a changeup. 0 for 13 in the last 3 years at all levels as a hitter and is not that great a bunter, but can get one down most of the time. A terrible fielder, but a great move to 1st. A very hard worker, but the work has not helped him throw a ball over the plate... He is even wilder than Hopley and is not shy about serving taters for breakfast. 1-1 with 1 SV and a 3.29 ERA this Spring. 13.2 IP, 16 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 9 SO. 2003 (MLB): 3-3 3.67 ERA 6 SV, 41.2 IP, 34 H, 5 HR, 28 BB, 38 SO, 6.0/8.2 BB/SO per 0 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2002 (B): 6-2 2.31 ERA 74 IP, 49 H, 6 HR, 32 BB, 101 SO, 3.9/12.3 BB/SO per 9 for Mobile of the Southern League 2001 (B): 3-1 1.41 ERA 1 SV, 44.2 IP, 29 H, 4 HR, 18 BB, 46 SO, 3.6/9.3 BB/SO per 9 for Mobile of the Southern League Albert Davies 27 year old left-hander from Pleasant View, Tennessee (a very small town 20 miles northwest of Nashville). 6' 7" 199 lbs. $22,000. Rookie. Was our 6th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. 94 MPH cut fastball and splitter. A decent fielder and a superb move to 1st. 1 for 4 with a double last year between Daytona and Jacksonville. Decent bunter. A stand up guy and was one of the leaders on the Tortugas last year. Led the Southern League in SV in 2002. Was 0-1 with 1 SV and a 2.08 ERA this Spring. 17.1 IP, 12 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 9 SO. 2003 (MLB): 0-0 4.63 ERA 11.2 IP, 21 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 9 SO, 4.6/6.9 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2003 (A): 0-4 3.47 ERA 1 SV, 36.1 IP, 28 H, 3 HR, 10 BB, 40 SO, 2.5/9.9 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona 2002(B): 9-6 2.48 ERA 26 SV, 65.1 IP, 44 H, 4 HR, 26 BB, 79 SO, 3.6/10.9 BB/SO per 9 for Jackson of the Southern League 2001 (B): 5-2 2.15 ERA 2 SV, 54.1 IP, 36 H, 3 HR, 27 BB, 47 SO, 4.5/7.8 BB/SO per 9 for Jackson of the Southern League Fielders Catchers Don Kern 27 year old catcher who bats and throws right-handed from Los Altos, California (a very small city 15 miles northwest of San Jose). 6' 0" 195 lbs. $15,000. Our 4th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. A solid receiver with a good arm. Threw out 43% of base stealers in his rookie season. A decent runner for a catcher and is very good at picking his spots to run. Has some pop in his bat. Could be an All-Star catcher, if he did not strikeout so much (60 in 251 AB). A very hard worker and a great guy. Hit .233/.346/.279 with 0 HR and 6 RBI in 43 AB this Spring with 0 SB. 2003 (MLB): .199/.279/.327 in 251 AB with 8 HR and 33 RBI and 11 SB as a rookie for Jacksonville 2002 (B): .278/.377/.389 in 288 AB with 7 HR and 29 RBI and 11 SB for Savannah of the Southern League 2001 (B): .209/.321/.328 in 311 AB with 3 HR and 37 RBI and 4 SB for Savannah of the Southern League. Won a Bronze Glove. Bert Swope 32 year old catcher who bats from both sides of the plate and throws right-handed from Wilmington, Delaware. 6' 5" 200 lbs. (no change) $18,000. An original Jay. A very good receiver with an average arm. Decent runner for a catcher and will steal the occasional base. A very hard worker who is smart and a good person. A switch-hitter who cannot hit lefties (.175 in his career) Hit .200/.250/.222 with 0 HR and 2 RBI in 45 AB this Spring with 1 SB. 2003 (MLB): .214/.289/.290 in 238 AB with 1 HR and 29 RBI and 1 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .235/.303/.309 in 298 AB with 3 HR and 27 RBI and 3 SB for Jacksonville 2001 (MLB): .214/.313/.243 in 173 AB with 0 HR and 13 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville Infielders Dave Thompson 28 year old first baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Rutherford, New Jersey (near where the Giants play football). 5' 11" 200 lbs. $16,000. Acquired in a trade with Buffalo in April, 2003. Not a lot of range and not much of an arm, but very sure-handed. Not much of a runner, but will steal a base every now and then. Has little power, but will draw a walk and hit singles. His only HR last season was a 2-run walk-off shot against Birmingham. A very hard worker and a good guy, but not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Hit .200/.282/.286 with 1 HR and 2 RBI in 35 AB this Spring with 0 SB. 2003 (MLB): .280/.336/.346 in 107 AB with 1 HR and 7 RBI and 0 SB as a rookie for Jacksonville 2003 (A): .372/.460/.500 in 86 AB with 2 HR and 13 RBI and 1 SB for Daytona 2002 (A): .288/.345/.519 in 52 AB with 2 HR and 11 RBI and 0 SB for Erie 2001 (A): .300/.344/.433 in 30 AB with 0 HR and 5 RBI and 0 SB for Erie Jack Washburn 22 year old first baseman who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Edgemoor, Delaware (a suburb of Wilmington). 6' 1" 176 lbs. (+2) $18,000. Our 2nd round pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. He has very good range for a first baseman, but has been very error prone. Was a 2nd baseman in the B Leagues. Very fast runner and likes to steal bases. By all accounts, he is a leader in the clubhouse. He led the Southern League in HR, RBI and SLG and was 2nd in OPS as a 19 year old. Hit .281/.354/.509 in 57 AB with 3 HR and 13 RBI this Spring with 4 SB. He led the team in HR and RBI and also with 2 3B. 2003 (MLB): .241/.287/.417 in 456 AB with 12 HR and 47 RBI and 32 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .263/.300/.479 in 190 AB with 7 HR and 29 RBI and 9 SB as a rookie for Jacksonville 2002 (A): .317/.355/.608 in 306 AB with 15 2B, 13 3B and 16 HR and 58 RBI and 74 SO and 18 SB for Daytona 2001 (B): .271/.340/.543 in 414 AB with 22 HR and 99 RBI and 21 SB for Mobile of the Southern League. Won a Bronze Bat. Junior Danielson 32 year old second baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Fort Collins, Colorado (A medium sized city 56 miles north of Denver). 6' 3" 204 lbs. $5,000. An original Jay. Still a good fielder, though he does not have the range he used to. Still has a very good arm and sure hands, though. Can play anywhere on the infield. Still an above average runner and very good base stealer. Has absolutely no power, line drive or otherwise. Ended up the season as our everyday 2nd baseman last year, but played his way out of the job this Spring. Though, as bad as all of our options are, he will probably end up starting plenty of games for us this year. Hit .131/.154/.164 in 61 AB this Spring with 0 HR and 2 RBI and 2 SB. 2003 (MLB): .274/.309/.306 in 263 AB with 0 HR and 12 RBI and 15 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (A): .250/.304/.292 in 168 AB with 0 HR and 9 RBI and 9 SB for Daytona 2002 (MLB): .286/.286/.286 in 7 AB with 0 HR and 1 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (A): .258/.317/.332 in 427 AB with 0 HR and 36 RBI and 21 SB for Daytona 2001 (MLB): .203/.254/.244 in 197 AB with 0 HR and 12 RBI and 11 SB for Jacksonville 2001 (A): .209/.227/.256 in 86 AB with 0 HR and 3 RBI and 1 SB for Daytona Charlie Faber 33 year old 2nd baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Pompano Beach, Florida (in Pam Beach County, 10 miles north of Fort Lauderdale). 6' 3" 199 lbs. (no change) $22,000. Acquired in a trade with Richmond in March, 2002. A solid defender with exceptional hands and a good arm. Does not have the range he used to, though he can still cover plenty of ground. Can play anywhere on the infield. Average runner and will steal a base now and then. Asked for a trade because he was not starting last year, and we made him available, but no one made an offer for him. To his credit, he did not come to camp with a poor attitude this Spring and played his way into the first shot at the 2nd base job. Hit .306/.421/.387 with 0 HR and 8 RBI in 62 AB this Spring with 2 SB. 2003 (MLB): .200/.281/.260 in 200 AB with 0 HR and 12 RBI and 6 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .230/.328/.281 in 178 AB with 0 HR and 10 RBI and 1 SB for Jacksonville 2001 (MLB): .237/.299/.309 in 392 AB with 1 HR and 42 RBI and 3 SB for Richmond Tom McDowell 26 year old third baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Folsom, California (18 miles northeast of Sacramento, famous for its prison). 6' 0" 197 lbs. $130,000. Acquired in a trade with Rochester in October for Marty Eades, the Jays' all-time leader in HR and RBI. Has very good range and a very strong arm, but is a bit error prone. Can play 1st well and the corner outfield spots, if pressed. Average runner, but likes to steal bases and is very good at it. Stole 22 bases last year without being caught. Strikes out a lot, but cut them down a bit last year over 2001, when he struck out 131 times, the 2nd most in the MLB. Once went 5 for 5 with a double and a home run and 5 RBI against the Jays. A very hard worker. We are hoping that he finds Connie Mack Stadium and its cozy left field wall a lot more to his liking than Memorial Stadium was. He hit .222 at home last year, but .295 on the road. Hit .269/.381/.346 with 0 HR and 8 RBI in 52 AB this Spring with 4 SB. 2003 (MLB): .260/.341/.401 in 546 AB with 14 HR and 72 RBI and 22 SB for Rochester 2002 (MLB): .243/.309/.378 in 527 AB with 13 HR and 62 RBI and 13 SB for Rochester 2001 (MLB): .263/.311/.411 in 224 AB with 7 HR and 24 RBI and 2 SB as a rookie for Rochester Bart Daw 32 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Warren, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit). 6' 1" 204 lbs. (no change) $60,000. Acquired in a trade with Providence just before Opening Day, 2002. A very good fielder, but not the elite defender that he was. He has lost a little range, but still has great hands and one of the strongest arms for a shortstop in the League. Fast runner who likes to steal bases and is very good at it. Was 1 SB short of tying the team record last year. Had by far the best season of his career at bat last year and we expect him to revert to form this season. A very hard worker and a leader in the clubhouse. Hit .193/.324/.193 with 0 HR and 2 RBI in 57 AB this Spring with 6 SB. 2003 (MLB): .246/.306/.352 in 488 AB with 9 HR and 61 RBI and 41 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .212/.302/.313 in 457 AB with 7 HR and 46 RBI and 18 SB for Jacksonville 2001 (MLB): .228/.298/.281 in 360 AB with 2 HR and 21 RBI and 16 SB for Providence SS Frank Roadman 29 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Latrobe, Pennsylvania (a very small town 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, home to Arnold Palmer, Mr. Rogers and the Banana Split). 6' 3" 201 lbs. $5,000. An original Jay. Only a decent glove and no bat at all. He is the youngest middle infielder in our organization. In three B Leagues Drafts, we have not selected a single one. He can run and steal bases and holds the team record for steals with 42 in 2001. He's an animal rights activist. Hit .295/.308/.344 with 0 HR and 7 RBI in 61 AB this Spring with 2 SB. 2003 (MLB): .196/.213/.196 in 46 AB with 0 HR and 2 RBI and 2 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (A): .282/.331/.391 in 348 AB with 5 HR and 43 RBI and 41 SB for Daytona 2002 (A): .217/.281/.287 in 314 AB with 4 HR and 23 RBI and 26 SB for Daytona 2001 (MLB): .215/.280/.284 in 475 AB with 5 HR and 35 RBI and 42 SB for Jacksonville Outfielders Ray McDonald 23 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Cimarron Hills, Colorado (surrounded by Colorado Springs). 6' 1" 182 lbs. (+2) $80,000. Acquired in a trade with Orlando in December, 2002. Good range and a strong arm and can play anywhere in the outfield and some 1st base. Had 18 outfield assists last year. His range was not as good this Spring as it had been, though. Very fast runner and likes to steal, but is not such a great percentage runner. A very hard worker and easy going. Easily the best hitter on the team now. Led the MLB in doubles with 39 and intentional walks with 17 last year. Hit .356/.397/.542 with 1 HR and 7 RBI in 59 AB this Spring with 1 SB. 2003 (MLB): .304/.369/.465 in 592 AB with 12 HR and 81 RBI and 19 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .278/.339/.406 in 503 AB with 8 HR and 51 RBI and 23 SB for Orlando 2001 (MLB): .225/.279/.330 in 191 AB with 3 HR and 23 RBI and 6 SB as a rookie for Orlando 2001 (A): .331/.389/.479 in 378 AB with 13 3B and 3 HR and 50 RBI and 16 SB for Tampa Danny Stewart 33 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Saginaw, Michigan. 6' 1" 197 lbs. (+2) $18,000. Acquired in a trade with Syracuse in February, 2001. Decent range and a solid arm. Can play anywhere in the outfield and first base, but his range is slipping and he would now be a liability in center. Losing his speed, but still a decent runner, but has never been a good base stealer. Very injury prone, but made it through 2003 without a trip to the DL for the 1st time in his career. Hard worker and a stand up guy and a leader in the clubhouse. Hit .233/.411/.349 with 1 HR and 6 RBI in 43 AB this Spring with 2 SB. 2003 (MLB): .243/.319/.284 in 391 AB with 1 HR and 23 RBI and 9 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .269/.336/.358 in 201 AB with 1 HR and 16 RBI and 4 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (A): .446/.492/.625 in 56 AB with 1 HR and 5 RBI and 1 SB for Daytona 2001 (MLB): .241/.289/.299 in 187 AB with 1 HR and 19 RBI and 2 SB for Jacksonville Cal Doty 27 year old center fielder who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from New York City. 6' 1" 172 lbs. (-1) 2nd year in a row he has lost weight. $115,000. An original Jay. Good range and an average arm. Has made 41 errors over the past three seasons. He will lead the league in errors at center field for certain, unless he gets hurt, which is likely. But the only other players who can play center field adequately are 34 year old Gary McKellar, who is 1) on the DL and 2) has a career OPS of .575 versus right-handers and rookie Phil Moore, who had a .668 OPS for Daytona last year, which translates to can't hit in the MLB yet. Fast runner and likes to steal. A very hard worker and a great guy and probably still the most popular player on the team with our few fans. Makes a lot of money giving speeches around town. Was tied for 2nd in the MLB with 37 doubles last year. Hit .328/.359/.426 with 1 HR and 9 RBI in 61 AB this Spring with 5 SB. 2003 (MLB): .296/.355/.401 in 588 AB with 5 HR and 62 RBI and 38 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .293/.361/.395 in 478 AB with 6 HR and 42 RBI and 33 SB for Jacksonville 2001 (MLB): .300/.361/.413 in 603 AB with 6 HR and 74 RBI and 18 SB for Jacksonville Dennis Brown 29 year old right fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Louisville, Kentucky (though as all true Bluegrassers know, even though Louisville is in Kentucky, it is not a part of Kentucky). 6' 4" 196 lbs. $5,000. An original Jay. A very strong arm, but little range. Very fast runner, but clueless about how to steal a base or use his speed on defense. A meat and potatoes kind of guy, who goes along with the flow. Hit .306/.419/.472 with 1 HR and 6 RBI in 36 AB this Spring with 0 SB. 2003 (MLB): .268/.300/.424 in 198 AB with 8 HR and 23 RBI and 1 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (MLB): .000/.000/.000 in 3 AB with 0 HR and 0 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (A): .290/.319/.376 in 359 AB with 5 HR and 34 BI and 1 SB for Daytona 2001 (MLB): .231/.263/.349 in 212 AB with 5 HR and 26 RBI and 0 SB as a rookie for Jacksonville Phil Moore 22 year old right fielder who bats and throws right-handed from Lincoln Park, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit). 5' 10" 173 lbs. Minor League Contract. Rookie. Our 3rd round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. A great right fielder, but lacks the range to be an elite center fielder. No power and strikes out a lot. A very fast runner, but not such a great base stealer. A very hard worker. Led the Southern League in doubles with 36 in 2002. Hit .184/.244/.211 with 0 HR and 4 RBI in 38 AB this Springs with 1 SB. Is only on the team until CF Gary McKellar returns from the DL in a couple of weeks. 2003 (A): .268/.335/.333 in 504 AB with 2 HR and 30 RBI and 17 SB for Daytona 2002 (B): .264/.348/.346 in 546 AB with 0 HR and 48 RBI and 35 SB for Asheville of the Southern League Fernando Tello 22 year old right fielder who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Columbus, Ohio. 6' 1" 196 lbs. Minor League Contract. Rookie. Our 1st round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. Subpar range and a very strong arm. Can also play 1st and 3rd base, but makes a ton of errors on the infield. Career FA of .901 at 3rd base in the B Leagues. Slow runner. A very hard worker, but not one to make a lot of friends. Was 2nd in the MVP voting and won the Batting Title and a Bronze Bat in the Southern League last year. Hit his way into a starting job this Spring. .345/.406/.517 with 2 HR and 7 RBI in 58 AB with 1 SB. 2003 (B): .330/.395/.487 with 17 HR and 83 RBI with 1 SB for Asheville of the Southern League 2002 (B): .253/.343/.366 in 396 AB with 9 HR and 50 RBI and 1 SB for Asheville of the Southern League 2001 (B): .245/.293/.349 in 436 AB with 7 HR and 49 RBI and 3 SB for Asheville of the Southern League Disabled List Gary McKellar 34 year old center fielder who bats and throws right-handed from Vallejo, California (on the north part of the San Francisco Bay). 6' 2" 195 lbs. $15,000. An original Jay. The only true center fielder we have on the team, but at 34 years old, he will not stay one for very long. He is as slow as molasses now, but makes up for it with great anticipation and routes to the ball. Has a very strong arm and had 10 assists in less than a half season's worth of innings in the outfield. A barley serviceable hitter against lefties, but cannot hit right-handers at all. Very smart. Formerly, had a reputation as a slacker, but has overcome that. Was injured in the final game of Spring Training and is expected to miss the first two weeks of the season. Hit .258/.292/.290 with 0 HR and 5 RBI in 62 AB this Spring with 0 SB. 2003 (MLB): .222/.300/.319 in 185 AB with 3 HR and 17 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (A): .257/.316/.300 in 70 AB with 1 HR and 9 RBI and 1 SB for Daytona 2002 (MLB): .261/.329/.290 in 69 AB with 0 HR and 4 RBI and 1 SB for Jacksonville 2002 (A): .262/.361/.393 in 61 AB with 1 HR and 5 RBI and 0 SB for Daytona 2001 (A): .230/.323/.299 in 361 AB with 3 HR and 38 RBI and 3 SB for Daytona Since there are only 16 teams in the League and no minor league affiliations below A Ball, being the 200th highest rated prospect in the Millennial League does not mean much, so we only worry about the top 100. Rookie. 96 MPH over the top fastball with a curve, changeup and forkball. Gets a lot of ground balls. A very good fielder for a pitcher, but not a good move to first. Went 5 for 9 as a hitter with the Jays last year and hit .214 in his minor league career. He is a good bunter. Very hard worker and a leader. He is known for his attention to detail. We expect him to join our rotation sometime this season, probably when Dale Gilchrist gets hurt. (+4) $16,000. Rookie. 94 MPH fastball with a slider and changeup. Pitches up in the zone and gets a lot of fly balls. A very good fielder for a pitcher and an average move to 1st for a left-hander. Went 2 for 5 with a double for the Jays and hit .294 for Daytona last year, but is a below average bunter. A stand up fellow and good under pressure. For the 2nd year in a row, we made the offense worse on paper, but it could be better in actuality, if the youngsters improve. Or it could be a lot worse if any of our starters get injured. Cal Doty, Ray McDonald and the newcomer, 3B Tom McDowell are irreplaceable and their spots would be filled with players who cannot hit a lick. The starting pitching should be improved by the youngsters improving, and we could probably overcome one injury (Gilchrist) there. Two would be devastating. The Bullpen will probably not be as good as it was last year, regardless, just because our best reliever, 2-time All-Star Bill Grant, is likely to decline due to his advanced age. And it was not very good last year. We do not have any youngsters there that have much of a chance at a break out season. It is possible, though unlikely, that if all of our starting pitchers stay healthy, one of them could be utilized to bolster the Bullpen. So, if the key players stay healthy, I think we have a shot at being in our first pennant race, but I do not think it likely that they all stay healthy. If we have a rash of injuries, we will tumble to the bottom very quickly, as we have no depth at all, except a little in the starting rotation. In the end, I think we will suffer a few major injuries, but end up with our first winning season and 84 wins and a 4th place finish. Baseball America has picked us for 4th place, but with a losing record (80-82). They have picked Buffalo to finally topple Syracuse from its Northern pedestal and beat Richmond in the Millennial Cup. But they also picked Syracuse to get supplanted last season by Columbus, who ended up in 5th place with 79 wins. Next up: Opening Day! Last edited by Questdog; 11-30-2020 at 04:55 PM. |

Opening Day! We are in Richmond to kick off 2004 with a short 2 game set against the defending Southern Division champions and winners of the 2002 Millennial Cup. We have a tough start to our schedule with our 1st 4 series being against 4 of the best teams in the League. After Richmond, we go to Buffalo for 4 games and then open our home schedule with 4 against Syracuse and then Charlotte comes in for 3 games. We were 7-7 against the Robins on the season last year. They were 10th in scoring with 621 runs (Jacksonville was 8th with 640). They were 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 541 last year (Jacksonville was tied for 6th with 622). Richmond's run differential was +80 and ours was +18. Jacksonville Jays (81-81 .500 8.5 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division last year) at Richmond Robins (90-73 .552 1 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division last year) JAX: Jim Baucom (22-L) (14-11 2.13 ERA 258.1 IP, 205 H, 9 HR, 51 BB, 216 SO last year) All-Star(2: 02-03) vs. RICH: Billy Warner (25-R) (15-8 2.81 ERA 253 IP, 189 H, 14 HR, 91 BB, 171 SO last year) All-Star Baucom was 1-0 in 3 starts versus Richmond last year with a 2.35 ERA. 23.1 IP, 17 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 20 SO. Warner is 3-1 in 6 starts against us lifetime with 2 shutouts and a 3.32 ERA. 38 IP, 31 H, 2 HR, 14 BB, 26 SO. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) Stats from last year JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (27-L .296-588-5-62-.756-38 C+) 2: RF Fernando Tello (22-L MLB debut C) Rookie 3: LF Ray McDonald (23-L .304-592-12-81-.833-19 B+) 4: 3B Tom McDowell (26-R .260-546-14-72-.742-22 C+) Jay debut 5: 1B Jack Washburn (22-L .241-456-12-47-.704-32 B) 6: C Don Kern (27-R .199-251-8-33-.605-11 B) 7: SS Bart Daw (32-R .246-488-9-61-.658-41 B+) 8: 2B Charlie Faber (33-R .200-200-0-12-.541-6 B+) 9: P Jim Baucom (22-L .240-75-0-7-.546-0 C) All-Star(2: 02-03) RICHMOND 1: CF Jose Vazquez (31-R .308-643-3-54-.752-19 B) All-Star(3: 01-03)/Gold Glove(2: 01-02) 2: SS Skip Dunkin (25-S .291-550-0-53-.689-48 B) Led MLB w/15 3B 3: 3B Vince Depew (23-L .344-276-5-34-.872-26 C+) 4: 1B Mike Sammon (25-R .328-351-4-41-.785-9 B) 5: LF Andres Borges (36-S .274-361-5-49-.729-2 C+) All-Star(2: 02-03) 6: 2B Ray Holloway (30-R .269-568-10-78-.713-11 A) All-Star(01) 7: RF Bob Cline (25-R .242-442-3-36-.614-16 B) 8: C Larry Slattery (28-R .198-358-2-27-.543-1 C) 9: P Billy Warner (25-R .177-79-0-3-.405-0 F) All-Star Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Griffith Stadium Weather: 47 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from left Attendance: 23,583 Top of the First: Cal Doty grounds out to short. Fernando Tello, in his first MLB at bat, grounds out to 2nd. Ray McDonald grounds out to 3rd... Bottom of the First Jose Vazquez lines a hit to center.... Skip Dunkin swings at the first pitch and pops out to right. Vince Depew, the career .357 hitter, lines a hit to right... Mike Sammon strikes out! Andres Borges, the 2-time All-Star, swings at the first pitch and lines out to center! Top of the Second Tom McDowell, in his first at bat as a Jay, strikes out.... Jack Washburn swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to right! 1 to 0, Jays! Bottom of the Second Ray Holloway swings at the first pitch and grounds a double over the 3rd base bag.... But the next three make outs! Top of the Fourth After Tom McDowell lines out to left for the second out, P Billy Warner has to leave the game with an injury. Top of the Sixth On the Hill: Loren Brooks (35-R), since getting the final out of the 4th. He's a 2-time All-Star, whose worst season ERA has been 2.50, but he went 14-3 that year. Cal Doty grounds a hit up the middle. He now has a 16 game hitting streak carried over from last season! Fernando Tello grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Doty moves up. They walk Ray McDonald intentionally and Tom McDowell unintentionally to load the bases up with 1 out. Jack Washburn walks to force in a run! 2 to 0, Jays! Don Kern grounds into a force at home, 6-2... Bart Daw grounds out to short.... Top of the Eighth New Pitcher: Ken Decker (34-L), who was 7-1 with 3 SV and a 1.59 ERA in 39.2 IP last year and who, in his worst season, had an ERA of 1.70. Ray McDonald and Tom McDowell lead off with back to back hits, the first hit for McDowell as a Jay! We are not going to platoon Jack Washburn in the early going, this year, to see if he can hit lefties, but Decker is extremely tough on left-handers, holding them to a lifetime average of .155, even after McDonald's hit. So Washburn is pulled down. PH Dave Thompson (28-R), who will stay in to play 1st, lines out to center... Don Kern grounds into a 5u-3 double play.... Bottom of the Eighth With 1 out, Mike Sammon takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4.... The Bullpen gets up, as P Jim Baucom is over 100 pitches. Andres Borges grounds a hit up the middle and Sammon beats the throw to 3rd... Ray Holloway pokes a hit to center and Sammon scores... 2 to 1, Jays. Call to the Bullpen: Robbie Hopley (30-R). PH Jose Catalan (32-L), who hit .305 with 6 RBI in 59 AB last year, flies out to deep left and Borges tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. Larry Slattery takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 2 outs... PH Dave Brooks (26-L), who hit .295 with 8 HR and 37 RBI in 254 AB as a rookie last year, is sent up. Call to the Bullpen: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (33-L). Bert Swope is into catch in a double switch. Brooks grounds out to 2nd! Top of the Ninth New Pitcher: Jack Barber (30-R), their 3-time All-Star closer, who has also finished second in the Fireman Trophy voting 3 years in a row. He was 6-6 with 38 SV, leading the MLB for the second straight season, and had a 2.44 ERA, the worst of his career, in 85 IP. Bart Daw grounds a double over the 3rd base bag! With 2 outs, they walk Cal Doty intentionally. Daw stupidly steals 3rd, but he made it... Fernando Tello swings at a 3-2 pitch and clears the bases with a double over the right fielder's head!! 4 to 1, Jays! Tello's first career hit! Won - 4 to 1 We had 10 hits and made no errors Richmond had 9 hits and made no errors Jim Baucom (W 1-0) went 7.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. 116 pitches. RHP Robbie Hopley (H 1) got 1 out and allowed 1 walk. LHP Bill Grant (SV 1) went 1.1 scoreless innings and walked 1. Billy Warner (L 0-1) went 3.2 innings, gave us 1 run, 2 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 4. CF Cal Doty had a hit and 2 walks (1 INT) and scored 2 runs. RF Fernando Tello, in his MLB debut, hit a double and had 2 RBI. LF Ray McDonald had a hit and a walk (INT). 3B Tom McDowell, in his Jay debut, had a hit and a walk. 1B Jack Washburn was 2 for 2 with a double, a home run and a walk and 2 RBI. SS Bart Daw had 3 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run. For Richmond, CF Jose Vazquez had 3 hits and a walk, but no runs or RBI. The Robins announced that P Billy Warner had a strained back that would probably bother him for a week or two, but he will try to pitch through it. Editor's Note: We have adjusted the error rate for this season. Originally, it was set to give a league average of .978, just like it was in real life in the National League of 1969-1992. But in OOTP, there are players whose error rate is worse than anyone had in real life, so last year I changed it to .982. I thought I could adjust a few other settings that would not show up in the stats and keep the scoring at the same level as it should be for the period, but scoring was down last season in the Millennial League. So this year, I have adjusted the error rate back a bit to .980 and made other adjustments and I am now confident that the scoring level will be the same as it was in the NL from 1969 to 1992, which was 4.10 runs per game. At least over the long haul. It should still vary some from season to season. In 2001, it was 4.11 in the Millennial League and in 2002, it was 4.08. But in 2003, it dropped to 3.98. The Robins announced that P Sammy Brumley had a sore thumb and should be fine in a few days. 2 games and 2 starting pitchers leaving with injuries. Before we left the park, Richmond offered me a trade of 2B Mike Sammon for Cal Doty. Sammon is a career .307 hitter and much in the same mold as Doty as a hitter, but also has a history of injuries, so I turned the offer down. Last edited by Questdog; 11-10-2020 at 01:03 PM. |

Jacksonville Jays (3-1 .750 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at Buffalo Bombers (1-3 .250 3 GB tied for 5th (last) place in the Northern Division) JAX: Al Calice (23-R) (1-0 2.25 ERA 16 IP, 17 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 8 SO last year) Rookie vs. BUF: Steve Cron (29-L) (0-1 6.00 ERA 6 IP, 8 H, 2 HR, 2 BB, 4 SO) The one negative about P Jim Baucom is that his stamina is not great. Editor's Note: 6 on the 10 point scale. When he has a high pitch count game, he could use an extra day of rest. So we will do that and send out the rookie Calice today. He has never faced Buffalo before and will likely be hammered today, since their two best hitters are lefties and they have been shut out two days in a row.... Cron was 18-9 with a 2.43 ERA in 263 IP last year, leading the MLB in IP and tying for the lead in W. He is 2-0 in 2 starts against us in his career with a 2.12 ERA. 17 IP, 16 H, 2 HR, 4 BB, 10 SO. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: 2B Charlie Faber (33-R .182-11-0-1-.710-0 B+) 2: SS Bart Daw (32-R .375-16-0-0-.974-2 B+) 3: LF Ray McDonald (23-L .353-17-0-1-.833-1 B+) 4: 3B Tom McDowell (26-R .313-16-1-4-.951-0 C+) 5: C Don Kern (27-R .133-15-0-0-.411-0 B) 6: CF Cal Doty (27-L .188-16-2-2-.840-0 C+) 7: 1B Jack Washburn (22-L .533-15-3-6-1.829-1 B) 8: RF Fernando Tello (22-L .188-16-0-2-.438-0 C) Rookie 9: P Al Calice (23-L Season debut D) Rookie BUFFALO 1: CF Tom Hamm (34-R .000-13-0-1-.125-0 C) All-Star(2: 01-02) 2: 3B Duane Keepers (28-S .429-14-0-1-.929-0 C+) 3: RF Ivan Moreno (32-L .125-16-0-2-.375-0 C) Silver Slugger(02)/All-Star(2: 02-03) 4: LF Mickey Lynn (31-L .133-15-1-3-.467-0 B) Silver Slugger(3: 01-03)/All-Star(2: 01,03) 5: 1B Frank Cohen (28-R .273-11-0-0-.701-0 B) All-Star(2: 01-02) 6: C Dick Lyles (37-R .333-6-0-0-.929-0 C) 7: 2B Dave Lloyd (31-R .214-14-1-2-.695-0 B+) All-Star(2: 01-02) 8: SS Joel McCormick (35-R .231-13-0-0-.516-0 A) 9: P Steve Cron (29-L .000-1-0-0-.000-0 C) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Sportsman's Park Weather: 51 F, Clear Skies, with a 13 MPH wind blowing out to center Attendance: 11,865 Top of the First Charlie Faber doubles down the right field line! Bart Daw swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... Ray McDonald strikes out... Tom McDowell grounds out to 3rd... Bottom of the First Tom Hamm, still looking for his first hit of the season, grounds out to 3rd. Duane Keepers takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Ivan Moreno hits a home run to center... 2 to 0, Bombers. I hate when I am right... Mickey Lynn takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Frank Cohen grounds out slowly to 3rd and Lynn goes to 2nd. Dick Lyles grounds out to the pitcher. Top of the Second C Don Kern is hurt breaking up a double play with a slide at 2nd base.... Bert Swope (32-S), who cannot hit lefties at all, will go in to catch... Top of the Fifth Cal Doty beats out an infield hit and gets bunted to 2nd. Why the heck is our #7 hitter bunting? Stupid as all get out... Fernando Tello lines a hit to right. P Al Calice swings away and strikes out. Charlie Faber grounds out to 1st, unassisted.... Bottom of the Seventh New Pitcher: Dave Nini (26-L). With 1 out, P Steve Cron doubles to center... The Bullpen gets up. We walk Tom Hamm, hitless on the year, intentionally.... Duane Keepers lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded with 1 out... Call to the Bullpen: Albert Davies (27-L). With the infield in, Ivan Moreno grounds a hit through the left side and 2 runs score... 4 to 0, Bombers. The next two make outs. Top of the Eighth With 1 out, Ray McDonald doubles to right. Tom McDowell lines a hit to left. Bert Swope, who cannot hit lefties and cannot be pinch-hit for, grounds into a 6-4-3 double play.... Lost - 4 to 0 3 games against left-handers this season and we have been shut out twice.... It is comforting to see that some things in this world never change... We had 7 hits and made no errors Buffalo had 6 hits and made 1 error Al Calice (L 0-1) went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks and struck out 1. His first career loss. LHP Dave Nini got 1 out, allowed 2 runs, 2 hits and 1 walk (INT). LHP Albert Davies went 1.2 scoreless innings and allowed 1 hit . Steve Cron (W 1-1) pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), gave us 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. He threw a WP. 148 pitches. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run. 2B Charlie Faber hit a double. LF Ray McDonald hit a double. C Don Kern drew a walk in his only trip to the plate. RF Fernando Tello had 3 hits. PH Dave Thompson drew a walk. For Buffalo, RF Ivan Moreno went 2 for 2 with his 1st home run of the season, drew 2 walks and drive in all 4 of the Bombers' runs. Trudy's report on Don Kern is a strained oblique that she expects to sideline him for about 6 weeks. Super... Last edited by Questdog; 11-10-2020 at 01:02 PM. |

We put C Don Kern (26-R) on the DL and called up C Garrett Bender (30-R). We will platoon Swope and Bender and Bender can infuriate us with his defense, just like the old times! Home Opener! The defending MLB champion Syracuse Sycamores are here to help us crack open Connie Mack Stadium for 2004. They won 3 of 4 at home against Memphis over of the weekend. We were 3-5 against them last year when they finished 96-66 in 1st place in the North. After a week of play, they are 5th in scoring with 4.00 runs per game (Jacksonville is #6 with 3.67). The League is only scoring 3.39 runs per game, but that is not unheard of in early April with the cold weather and the injury prone Aces pitching their few games of the year. The Sycamores are tied for 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 2.50 per game (Jacksonville, with 3 shutouts, is #1 with 1.50!). Their run differential is +9, 3rd best in the MLB, and ours is (brace yourselves) +13, best in the League! The big news out of Syracuse is that they have rid their rotation of the last two Ace Award and Hurler Trophy winners. They traded 2002 Ace Award and Hurler Trophy winner Ron Wisham to Buffalo for 1B Mitch Kahmann, who hit .346 with 9 HR and 33 RBI in 179 AB as a rookie. And they have sent 2003 Ace Award and Hurler Trophy winner Ron Hutchins back to the Bullpen, from whence he came. Syracuse Sycamores (5-1 .833 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (4-2 .667 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) SYR: Bill Floyd (25-L) (MLB debut) rookie vs. JAX: Del Warwick (29-L) (0-1 7.20 ERA 5 IP, 9 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 2 SO) Gold Glove(02) Our 5th lefty in 7 games.... Floyd was a 5th round pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft and missed most of 2002 and all of 2003 with a partially torn UCL. He was 1-3 with a 2.70 ERA this Spring. 20 IP, 17 H, 0 HR, 9 BB, 9 SO. We was the #86 prospect this Spring. Warwick faced the Sycamores once last year in a no decision that we lost in the top of the 9th. He gave up 2 runs on 11 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 4 strikeouts in 7 innings. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) SYRACUSE 1: LF John Byers (20-R .304-23-0-2-.886-1 A) Rookie #9 prospect 2: RF Jeff Garrigus (34-R .238-21-0-1-.590-2 A) All-Star 3: 2B Frank Bates (31-R .217-23-1-2-.628-0 B+) Silver Slugger(2: 02-03(SS)/All-Star(3: 01-03) 4: 1B Don Bruns (34-R .000-3-0-0-.000-0 C) 5: C Lee Dean (31-L .300-20-0-3-.764-0 C) Silver Slugger(2: 01-02)/All-Star(2: 02-03) 6: 3B Charlie LaRue (24-R .308-13-0-0-.692-0 B) Rookie 7: SS Octavio Garcia (28-S .333-21-1-1-.988-0 C) 8: CF Jim Beard (25-R .200-20-0-2-.710-1 A) Gold Glove 9: P Bil Floyd (25-L MLB debut B) Rookie #86 prospect JACKSONVILLE 1: 2B Charlie Faber (33-R .250-20-0-1-.750-0 B+) 2: SS Bart Daw (32-R .304-23-1-3-.950-2 B+) 3: LF Ray McDonald (23-L .320-25-0-1-.810-1 B+) 4: 3B Tom McDowell (26-R .320-25-2-6-.970-0 C+) 5: 1B Jack Washburn (22-L .409-22-3-6-1.344-1 B) 6: RF Fernando Tello (22-L .292-24-0-2-.625-0 C) Rookie 7: CF Cal Doty (27-L .208-24-2-2-.728-0 C+) 8: C Garrett Bender (30-R .500-4-0-0-1.000-0 C+) 9: P Del Warwick (29-L .000-1-0-0-.000-0 D+) Gold Glove(02) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 72 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 8 MPH wind blowing left to right Attendance: 12,023 Top of the First John Byers strikes out for the first time this season! Jeff Garrigus grounds out to 3rd. Frank Bates grounds out to 1st, unassisted! 1-2-3! Bottom of the First Charlie Faber lines a hit to right! Bart Daw triples to left center and Faber scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Ray McDonald flies out to deep right and Daw tags up and scores. 2 to 0, Jays! Tom McDowell grounds out to short. Jack Washburn pops out to right. Bottom of the Second Fernando Tello strikes out and P Bill Floyd is hurt... New Pitcher: John Boston (36-L), making his season debut. He was 4-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 64.1 IP and 1 start last year. Cal Doty triples high off the wall in right center! Garrett Bender strikes out looking... P Del Warwick grounds out to 3rd. Bottom of the Fourth Tom McDowell lines one down the right field line to the corner and Jeff Garrigus misplays the carom and the ball gets away from him and McDowell circles the bases with an inside the park home run! 3 to 0, Jays! Bottom of the Fifth Garrett Bender grounds one to 3rd, but Charlie LaRue boots it! P Del Warwick bunts Bender to 2nd. With 2 outs, Bart Daw triples to right center and Bender scores! 4 to 0, Jays. Daw ties the MLB record with his second triple of the game! Someday, someone will hit three and break the tie, now shared by about 783 players, give or take a thousand. Top of the Sixth Jeff Garrigus lines a hit to right center. Frank Bates plunks one and C Garret Bender strikes again... He throws the ball into center field for a 2 base error.... The Bullpen gets up. Don Bruns flies out to deep center and both runners advance. 4 to 1, Jays. On the fist pitch to Lee Dean, Bates breaks for home, but their is no bunt from Dean and Bates is out! Was that a missed sign by Dean or a straight steal of home? Top of the Seventh Jim Beard beats out an infield hit. The Bullpen gets up again. PH Don Czachor (32-L), 2 for 4 on the season with 2 RBI and a career .341 hitter and who bought a new glove in 2001 and has not broken it in yet, grounds one to 1st and Jack Washburn goes to 2nd for the force, but makes a bad throw for an error.... John Byers lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded with no outs... Call to the Bullpen: Roger Wallace (28-R). PH Mitch Kahmann (25-L), batting .167 with 1 HR and 4 RBI in 24 AB this year, but hit .346 with a .949 OPS as a rookie for Buffalo last year, doubles to right and 2 runs score... 4 to 3, Jays. Frank Bates hits a home run to left... 6 to 4, Sycamores. Top of the Eighth New Pitcher: Robbie Hopley (30-R). Jim Beard doubles to right... The Bullpen is back up. But the next three make outs! Top of the Ninth: Frank Bates lines a 3-2 pitch to left center for a double... The Bullpen is up again. With 1 out, we walk Lee Dean intentionally. Charlie LaRue grounds out slowly to 3rd and the runners move up. Call to the Bullpen: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (33-L). Octavio Garcia strikes out! Bottom of the Ninth On the Hill: Benny Martineau (32-L), their All-Star(02) and 2-time reigning Fireman Trophy closer, who is no longer their closer, after a perfect 8th. 7-8-9 up for us. Cal Doty grounds a hit to left. C Bert Swope (32-S) is up and there is no other catcher on the bench, but we cannot let him hit here with his career .170 BA against lefties... PH Dave Thompson (28-R) swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle! PH Junior Danielson (32-R) grounds a hit to left and the bases are loaded with no outs! Their closer, Ron Hutchins, should be unavailable today after pitching in 3 of the last 4 games. Charlie Faber strikes out.... Bart Daw flies out to deep left.... Doty smartly holds at 3rd, just in case... Ray McDonald pokes a hit just over the 1st baseman and 2 runs score!! Tie Game: 6 to 6! We need another run, because we have no one to catch! Tom McDowell strikes out.... Extras! First time this season! With no catcher! Top of the Tenth New Pitcher: Albert Davies (27-L). Dave Thompson will stay in to catch. 8-9-1 up for the Sycamores. Jim Beard lines a hit to right and steals 2nd... RF Javier Perez (27-L), 0 for 1 on the season and a career .264 hitter with 20 HR in 560 AB, grounds a hit to right and Beard scores... 7 to 6, Sycamores. The Bullpen (Dave Nini) is up. John Byers bunts the runner to 2nd. But the next two, including Frank Bates, make outs! Bottom of the Tenth New Pitcher: Greg Estep (26-L), a rookie who is 1-0 with 5.1 scoreless innings under his belt. 5-6-7 up for us, all lefties... Jack Washburn lines a hit to left! And then gets picked off by P Estep.... The second runner picked off today for us... Fernando Tello strikes out... Cal Doty sends one deep to left, but not deep enough.... Lost - 7 to 6 We had 14 hits and made 3 errors Syracuse had 16 hits and made 1 error Del Warwick went 6 innings, allowed 4 runs (2 earned), 9 hits, no walks and struck out 3. SS Bart Daw had 3 hits with 2 triples, scored a run and had 2 RBI. LF Ray McDonald had only 1 hit, but 3 RBI. 3B Tom McDowell hit his 3rd home run of the season, an inside-the-parker. CF Cal Doty had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run and threw a runner out at 2nd without hurting himself. PH Danny Stewart had a hit, but then got picked off. PH/C Dave Thompson had a hit and scored a run. PH Junior Danielson had a hit. For Syracuse, 2B Frank Bates hit a double and his 2nd home run and had 3 RBI. Rookie 3B Charlie LaRue had 4 hits. CF Jim Beard had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and scored 2 runs. The Sycamores announced that P Bill Floyd had back spasms, but expected them to be gone by tomorrow. Down on the Farm: P Steve Hale (22-L), our 5th round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft, tore his rotator cuff in his first game of the season and is our for at least a calendar year... That makes 3 of the 5 pitchers that began the season in Daytona's rotation now on the DL after they have played 5 games.... Last edited by Questdog; 11-10-2020 at 01:02 PM. |

Trudy's report on Bart Daw is sprained knee that will hamper him for 2 to 3 weeks... He could play through it, but we cannot risk him going out for the season. Plus, his main asset is his fielding and this would hamper it, I am sure. So, we will put him on the DL. Sucks, because he was off to a monster start as a hitter with a 1.042 OPS.... The Charlotte Hornets are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games at home with Ottawa. In 2001, they finished 2 games out of 1st place in the Southern Division and have finished 1 game out in each of the last two seasons. We were 8-6 against them last year when they finished, 89-74, losing the tiebreak game to Richmond. They are 5th in scoring with 4.40 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.70). The Hornets are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.20 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 2.70). Their run differential is +2 and ours is +10, the best in the South, but 4th best overall. A 6-7 start is not great, but against 4 of the 5 best teams in the League, it is not really bad. Getting shutout in back to back games by right-handers who are not exactly overpowering is distressful, though.... But we did wallop Charlotte's best pitcher good....
