Same teams, new venue. This is our home opener. Sprague will give it a go, but he has not pitched in over 3 weeks, so if he looks shaky will take him out.

Last time we faced Yurky, he beat us in 11 innings and struck out 10.

Won - 3 to 2 in 10 innings

Our third game to go to extra-innings in the last 4.

We did not get our first hit until the 5th inning and Sprague was the one to get it.

Sprague went 10 innings, allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4.

Yurkovich allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 9.

We made 6 errors; they made 5.

Yurkovich retired the first 2 batters in the bottom of the 10th, but then 3B George Dominick (30-4.8) singled. He stole second and went to third when the catcher's throw sailed into the outfield. 1B Rube Ford (33-5.1) ended the game with a loud hit. He now has a 14 game hitting streak going back to last season. I think he'll get to play regularly at 3B and 1B now, until he cools off, at least. He had 2 hits and drew a walk in the game. Dominick also had a double and an RBI.

For Baltimore, C William Fisher (27-4.9) had 3 of their 6 hits and an RBI.

We had 1223 fans for the Home Opener; a new club record for attendance.

Grand National Association Games:
Kansas City (3) at Providence (6): Ted Ryther (30-4.3) (3-1) over Joe Osborne (26-3.0) (0-1) in his major league debut. Ryther allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit and scored 2 runs. Osborne allowed 11 hits, walked 4 and struck out 5. For the Cowboys, SS Al Sarbacker (23-4.8) had 3 hits with a triple and scored all 3 Kansas City runs. 2B Warren Page (27-6.0), in his season debut, had 3 hits and 2 RBIs.

Brooklyn (5) at Philadelphia (3): Dick Cole (30-5.9) (3-1) over Bill McClean (38-6.0) (1-3). Cole allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 7. He also had 2 hits on offense. McClean allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. CF Mike Hammond (33-5.7) had 4 hits with a triple, stole 2 bases and scored a run.

Minneapolis (2) at Pittsburgh (8): Tom Adams (29-6.0) (4-1) over Charlie Moss (43-6.3) (1-2). Adams allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. With his mighty piece of lumber, he had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and knocked 2 in. That outburst raises his career batting average to .182. Moss allowed 9 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2.

Louisville (1) at Milwaukee (4): Tom Washam (31-6.1) (2-2) over Ed Sharp (29-5.5) (1-3). Washam allowed 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 8. Sharp allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. He had a hit and a walk at bat. Only 3 errors total were made in this game; pretty impressive for a pair of expansion teams.

Scranton (7) at Chicago (8): Bill Moore (28-5.7) (3-0) over Sam Paul (29-5.4) (1-3). LF Martin Arnold (29-6.2), who was a defensive replacement for reigning MVP Candy Simpson in the top of the 8th, led off the bottom of the 9th with a home run to end the game. 2B Henry Potter (30-6.4) hit 2 triples, drew a walk and scored 3 runs. For the Miners, RF Martin Griffin (33-6.3) had 4 hits with a double and a home run and 3 RBIs.

Liberty League Games:
Cincinnati (16) at Washington (4): Charlie Branham (24-4.2) (2-1) over Will Taylor (37-7.9) (0-1) in his first start of the season. Branham allowed 11 hits, walked 3 and struck out 8. He had 3 hits with a triple, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Will Taylor seems to be just a shadow of his former self, when he was one of the best pitchers in the league. He won 33 games and led the Liberty League in strikeouts back in 1878. C Tim Fish (29-5.4) had 2 hits with a double, but messed up his thumb and will likely miss 3 weeks or so. Joe Turner (24-6.6) also had to leave the game with an injury, but not before he got a knock to extend his consecutive games hitting streak to 30, dating back to last season. He tweaked his shoulder and should be fine in a day or two. The all-time record streak is 33 games, set by Lou Landaal (34-6.8) back in 1876. Lou is currently on the Disabled List with New York. Bill Thompson (33-4.2) of Boston had a 32-game streak in 1878.

Cleveland (4) at Troy (7): John Bendickson (32-6.0) (2-1) over Tom Marshman (33-4.7) (1-2). Bendy allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 6. Rookie RF Ed Wakefield (24-5.8) had 4 hits with a triple, a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. After 8 games gone on the schedule, he is leading the liberty League in batting average with a .448 mark.

Detroit (7) at Boston (0): Rufus Lee (33-3.9) (3-1) over Joe Peters (28-4.9) (0-3). Lee allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4. This was his second shutout in a row. No other Liberty League pitcher has even thrown one yet. You shut out Boston at their place and you can say you did something! Peters allowed 6 hits, walked 4 and struck out 11. Last year's Hurler Trophy winner is off to a slow start, but he has not pitched horribly; Boston has only scored 3 total runs in his 3 starts. 1B Jack Warren (31-7.2) had 3 hits with a double, a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

New York (7) at St. Louis (8): Daisy Neidigh (36-7.4) (1-0) in his first major league start over Jack Roberts (32-6.1) (3-2). Neidigh allowed 12 hits, walked 5 and struck out 6. Down a run with 2-on and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, LF John Rodgers (32-4.4) came through with a single to score both runners and win the game. He had 3 hits on the day, stole a base, scored a run and knocked in 4. SS Bill Loschiavo (26-5.8), who I wish was my shortstop, had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had and RBI. For the Gothams, SS Ed Glass (24-4.5) continued his hot hitting with 4 hits, 2 of them doubles, a walk, 2 stolen bases, 3 runs scored and an RBI. He is now hitting .424 after batting .241 last season.

RF Hank Roberts (25-3.0) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI, but made his first error of the season. C Charlie LeFevre (30-5.0) had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and threw out the only Oriole that tried to steal a base. LF Dave Cunningham (28-5.4) had 3 hits with 2 triples, a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

For Baltimore, 3B Sol Renaud (27-5.7) hit an inside-the-park home run, his second round-tripper of the year.

Grand National Association Games:
Kansas City (2) at Providence (10): Frank McSherry (28-4.1) (4-0) over Hosea Alexander (35-4.8) (2-2). McSherry allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Rookie SS Pat Millis (23-7.2) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. 3B Bill Parsons (26-8.3) had 3 hits with a double and scored twice. Providence has not lost since dropping their Opening Day game to Louisville, 2 to 1 (the game Ted Ryther lost a 3-hitter). They have won 7 in a row since and are tied for first with Chicago.

Brooklyn (9) at Philadelphia (10): John Allen (25-6.4) (3-0) over Nate Kendall (35-5.4) (0-3). Allen did not pitch very well, but he had 2 hits with a double, a walk and scored 2 runs. LF Clarence Reis (33-5.0) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Minneapolis (2) at Pittsburgh (14): Tom Adams (29-6.0) (5-1) over Steve Taylor (33-3.3) (1-1) . Adams allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. LF Cal Campbell (25-7.2) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

Louisville (5) at Milwaukee (9): Tom Washam (31-6.1) (3-2) over Jake D'Addario (34-5.5) (0-4). Washam allowed 9 hits, walked none and struck out 8. Rookie 3B Levi Torrence (32-5.3) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. For the Colonels, RF Willie Rudd (33-5.2) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Scranton (6) at Chicago (13): John Ritch (29-7.8) (3-1) over Sam Doty (35-6.4) (1-3). Ritch allowed 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 3B Charlie Hale (26-4.8) had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. C George Sandefur (27-5.8) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the season, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. He has already matched his home run output of a year ago and has surpassed his stolen base total from last season, when he had none. For Scranton, 3B Ed Sumerlin (32-5.1) provided all the highlights. He had 3 hits with a home run, scored 3 times and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League Games:
Cleveland (3) at Washington (0): Jim Ludwig (23-4.6) (1-1) over John Callaham (35-5.5) (3-3). Ludwig, in his second major league start, became the second pitcher to throw a shutout in the Liberty League in 1884 (Rufus Lee has 2). He allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. Callaham allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 7. After starting 3-0, he has lost his last 3, though he has pitched well in 2 of those losses. C Kid Wright (29-7.3) had 2 hits with a home run and 2 RBIs.

Cincinnati (7) at Troy (9): Miah Turner (23-5.3) (1-1) over Bill Henson (27-6.5) (1-1). Turner allowed 10 hits, walked 2 and struck out 11. RF John Hagadorn (34-6.3) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs, but strained a stomach muscle and will miss about a week.

New York (4) at Boston (6): William Little (23-6.0) (2-0) over George Taylor (29-3.9) (1-2). Little allowed 4 hits, walked 3 and struck out 8 in 6.1 innings. He had to leave in the 7th inning with mild hamstring pull. He should be fine in 2 or 3 days. 2b John Ingling (24-4.6) made his second start of the season and had 3 hits with a double and scored a run, the same result as in his first start., though he scored 3 times in that one and had 6 RBIs. The youngster has to compete for playing time with a home run champ at 3B, a Silver Slugger and 2-time Gold Glover at SS and a 3-time Gold Glover and 2-time MVP at 2B. He might end up being better than any of them thoguh.

Detroit (2) at St. Louis (4): Sam White (29-5.2) (2-0) over William McLeod (24-5.6) (0-1). White allowed 6 hits, walked 4 and struck out 6. With his bat, he had 2 hits, a walk and scored a run. McLeod allowed 9 hits, walked 1 and struck out 4. Manager/C Jake Houghton had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. He hit a 2-run homer to win the game in the bottom of the 9th. The Maroons, who were an expansion team last year and finished at the bottom of the standings, are now 7-2 and 2 games ahead of everyone else. They have earned 5 of their 7 wins with bottom of the last inning heroics.

Kansas City (1) at Providence (5): Egyptian Hooker (36-3.9) (1-0) in his season debut over Dan Butler (26-4.7) (0-2) in his first major league start. Hooker allowed 11 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. Butler allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 5. For the Cowboys, CF Connie Frenette (29-4.7) had 4 hits, but no runs or RBIs. The Grays did not make an error. They have now won 8 in a row.

Louisville (8) at Milwaukee (9): Alex Howison (34-6.6) (3-1) over Wiley Steel (22-5.6) (0-1) in his first major league start. C Jarvis Patten (27-7.3) had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBIs.

Scranton (6) at Chicago (13): Pete Rinehart (25-6.2) (2-0) in his first start of the season over George Lambert (33-9.0) (0-1) in his first major league start. Same score these 2 teams had yesterday. Rinehart allowed 10 hits, walked 1 and struck out 5. With his bat, he had 2 hits, a walk and scored twice. Chicago scored 7 times in the 6th inning, the big blow being a home run by SS John Sullivan (38-4.0) with the bases loaded. The Colts have won 6 in a row and our tied with Providence for first place.

Sprague was not sharp today. He allowed 14 hits, no walks and struck out 5.

Yurky WAS sharp. He allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 9. He hit 2 doubles and scored a run and knocked 1 in, to boot.

3B George Dominick (30-4.8) had 2 hits and scored both of our runs. 1B Rube Ford (33-5.1) went 0 for 4 with 3 strike outs to end his hitting streak. C Harry Farrell (32-5.6) hit a triple and drove in a run.

For the Orioles, RF Bill Fogle (25-5.3) and LF Dan Mitchell (33-3.5) each had 3 hits with a triple and scored a run. Fogle also had an RBI.

We made 3 errors and the Orioles only made 1.

For the Reds, RF Joe Turner (24-6.6) had a hit to run his streak to 31 games.

Another flip-flop series. We play them here for 3 and then go to our place to face them for 3 more. Don't like seeing a team for that long, especially when their pitcher gets hot like Yurkovich did.

The Stogies are 3rd in runs scored with 6.6 a game (we are 11th with 3.9). They are 4th in runs allowed with 3.7 per contest (we are second with 3.3). Their #1 pitcher, Tom Adams (29-6.0) leads the Association in wins, ERA and innings. Luckily he's not going today, but neither is our #1.

Pittsburgh's Recreation Park is a tough place to hit them out, but is otherwise a pretty fair venue.

With 1 out in the bottom of the 9th, RF Tim Powers (27-6.9) singled to send the fans home happy.

Our offense is utterly horrible. Frank Parsons held us to 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. He had allowed 15 runs in his first 2 starts, but was awesome against our anemic hitters.

Lee allowed 5 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4.

We made 1 error to the Stogies' 3.

DeVaux allowed 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 9. 3B Kid Angell (34-6.0) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and knocked in 3. For the O's, 3B Sol Renaud (27-5.7) hit his 3rd home run of the season.

Philadelphia (12) at Minneapolis (10): Bill McClean (38-6.0) (3-3) over Dan Dittmar (35-8.0) (4-1). RF John Cray (27-7.0) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. C Fred Smith (28-6.8) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Millers, Rookie LF Bill Houston (27-3.9) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and knocked in 2.

Chicago (13) at Kansas City (7): Bill Moore (28-5.7) (4-0) over Hosea Alexander (35-4.8) (2-3). I guess this answers the question of whether the Colts can score runs away from cozy Lake Front Park. This was their first road game and in 10 games now, they have scored 94 runs. Almost 3 times as many as the Mutuals. 3B Charlie Hale (26-4.8) and 1B Henry Ivy (32-7.2) each had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF Candy Simpson (25-6.8) had 3 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

Liberty League Games:
New York (5) at Washington (4): Jack Roberts (32-6.1) (4-3) over John Callaham (35-5.5) (3-4). Roberts allowed 8 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4. Callaham allowed 10 hits, walked 1 and struck out 8 in his 4th loss in a row. RF James McClellan (26-4.7) had 2 doubles, a run and an RBI. CF Hi Lynch (33-7.5) had 3 hits with a double, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs.

Rose allowed 5 hits to what was the #1 offense in the Liberty League before today, walked 2 and struck out 2. Bendickson allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4. He had one of the 5 hits. C Evan Eckberg (28-3.5) had 3 hits, but did not figure in the scoring.

Ludwig must have begun his birthday celebrating early as he walked 7 batters. 3B Bill Gordon (27-3.7) had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and knocked in 2.

C Jimmy Babcock (27-6.9) had 2 hits with a 2-run homer and a walk. For Scranton, RF Martin Griffin (33-6.3) was the whole offense with a 3-run home run, his 3rd of the year. He also had a single.

Moss allowed 11 hits, no walks and had no strike outs. LF John Cray (27-7.0) had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. On Opening Day against the Mutuals, Cray struck out 3 times and grounded into a double-play. In the seven games he's played since, he has only struck out once, has not hit into any more DPs and has his average up over .350.

Chicago (6) at Kansas City (7) in 13 innings: Dan Butler (26-4.7) (1-2) in relief of Joe Osborne (26-3.0) over John Ritch (29-7.8) (3-2). Osborne allowed 9 hits in his 10 innings, walked 2 and struck out 5. Butler, in relief, went 3 innings, allowed a hit and struck out 3. Ritch went all 12, allowed 15 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. CF Connie Frenette (29-4.7) doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the 9th. In the bottom of the 13th, manager/LF Lou Baggett (22-4.2) singled home SS Al Sarbacker (23-4.8), who had tripled to lead off the inning.

New York (2) at Washington (1): George Taylor (29-3.9) (2-2) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (3-1). Taylor allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 4. He also had the go ahead hit and RBI in the 7th inning. Burton allowed 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 9.

Detroit (2) at Troy (5): Harry Lamb (29-6.4) (4-2) over William Rose (33-4.9) (2-5). Lamb allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 6. Rose allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2. 3B Monte Moody (26-6.9) hit a 2-run home run.

Cincinnati (6) at St. Louis (3) in 10 innings: John Stevens (27-8.2) (2-4) over Irv Goodwin (21-8.8) (3-3). Stevens allowed 11 hits, walked 1 and struck out 4. Goodwin allowed 9 hits, walked 5 and struck out 5. 2B Pete Hinde (28-7.9) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and scored a run. RF Joe Turner (24-6.6) had a hit, extending his streak to 33 games, tying the all-time record!


The expansion of the Grand National League from 8 teams to 12 has put a serious strain on player resources in the high minor leagues. Good pitchers and catchers have become particularly scarce. Some teams were forced to accept hurlers on their roster who just do not belong in the upper reaches of professional baseball. This was evident today in the Eastern League (A) when Trenton defeated Rochester, 25 to 23. There were 47 hits in the game. Each team had a 14 run inning, the Trentonians in the first and the Jingoes in the 4th. 44-year-old Joe Rice (44-2.7) earned the win with 6 innings of relief in which he allowed "only" 11 hits.

Sure felt like we were losing the whole game. We had 5 hits through 6 innings, but 4 of them were infield hits and we only had 1 run. But in the last 3 innings we starting hitting Adams pretty hard and scored in each of the final 3 frames.

We ended up with 12 hits. 2B Felix Hill (25-4.2) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Abe Cupp (23-4.7) had 3 hits, 2 on the infield, but the other a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Dave Cunningham (28-5.4) had 2 hits and scored a run. C Charlie LeFevre (30-5.0) had a good day in the batter's box, pounding a pair of doubles, scoring a run and knocking 1 in. But he had a rough day in the catcher's box. Pittsburgh stole 5 bases off of him and twice he threw the ball away for an error. He did catch 2 of them, though.

This Stogie team sure likes to run. After 12 games, they have 30 steals, 10 more than any other Association club. They are on a pace to beat their amazing mark of 243 steals last year, almost 100 more than any other team.

Cook held Pittsburgh to 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

If you'd have told me before the season that after 2 weeks, Cook would be leading the team in wins, I would have told you that you were insane.

With the game tied at 4, in the bottom of the 8th with 1 out, RF Hank Roberts (25-3.0) swung and missed at strike 3, but the Stogies' catcher couldn't catch the pitch and Roberts ended up safe at first. 3B George Dominick (30-4.8) then tripled him home. It was his 2nd hit of the day. We couldn't get Dominick to score, but Sprague set Pittsburgh down in order in the top of the 9th to secure the win.

Sprague allowed only 3 hits, but walked his first 2 batters of the season and struck out 3.

1B Lew Bartholomew (29-4.0) had 2 hits, and an RBI, but got picked off first base.

We gave the Stogies some of their own medicine today by stealing 4 bases. C Cliff Robinson (26-6.1) did nab one of our guys, but 3 times he threw the ball into the outfield.

Parsons only gave us 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 5.

SS Jumbo Lynn (24-3.8) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. The Quakers had 16 hits at bat and made no errors in the field. The Gladiators made 4 hits at bat and 8 errors in the field. The win was costly as Philadelphia had 2 players injured: 2B Charlie Whitney (33-4.5) will miss 3-4 weeks with a pulled muscle and 1B Pat Ross (27-5.4), the young Irish star from Celbridge, will miss 2-3 weeks with a sprained thumb.

Baltimore (4) at Minneapolis (5): Dan Dittmar (35-8.0) (5-1) over Pop Yurkovich (32-5.6) (2-5). Dittmar allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. 4 of those hits Dittmar allowed came in the 9th inning when the Orioles scores 4 times to tie the game. An error and a 2-out single by 2B Joe Henry (31-9.2) in the bottom half of the inning gave them the win, however. Henry had 2 hits and 2 RBIs in the game.

Milwaukee (6) at Kansas City (3): Tom Washam (31-6.1) (5-3) over Hosea Alexander (35-4.8) (2-4). Washam allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. SS Herman Bonjour (31-5.6) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored a run. Milwaukee only made 1 error and Kansas City made 8.

We face young Tom Lilly today, who is making his first major league start. He was 27-10 for Bridgeport in the CSL (B) last year. He finished 3rd in the voting for their Hurler Trophy and won the Bronze Bat as the best hitting pitcher in the league. In the Spring games, he was unbelievable, going 9-0 and only walking 7 and striking out 63 in 80.2 innings. In his major league debut, he pitched 1 perfect inning of relief against Brooklyn on the 5th of May.

Each team made 3 errors.

McLeod went 12 innings, allowed 9 hits, walked 4 and struck out 6. Noodles Kuhn (26-4.9) made his major league debut by pitching the final inning and securing the win. He walked a batter, but went otherwise unscathed. Bendickson went 9 innings, allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and truck out 5. Turner pitched 4 innings of relief, allowed 2 hits and struck out 3. Troy scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, with the 3rd running scoring on a passed ball. 2 errors and a passed ball gave Detroit their run in the top of the 13th. C Evan Eckberg (28-3.5) had 4 hits in the game, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Lee gave the Stogies 9 hits and 5 of them were triples. He did not walk anyone and struck out 4.

We made 1 error; Pittsburgh made 3.

Lilly set us down in order in the first 2 innings. Abe Cupp (23-4.7) led off the third with a triple, but Lilly struck out the next 2 batters and then got a ground out. In the bottom of the 4th, Hank Roberts (25-3.0) got our second hit with 1 out, but Rube Ford (33-5.1) then grounded into a double-play. In the bottom of the 5th, Dave Cunningham (28-5.4) led off with a double and after an out was made, Abe Cupp hit his first career home run to finally put us on the board, but by that time we were down 6 to 2, so it did not matter much.

Lilly allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 9.

Cupp with the triple and home run and Hank Roberts were all of our offense. Roberts had 3 singles and an RBI.

Rube Ford is striking out a ton. He has whiffed 12 times in 29 at bats. Last year, he only struck out 13 times all year in 149 at bats. We'll give him and some of the others who are stinking it up until the end of the month to turn it around and then on June 1st, we'll make some changes.

Brewer C Jarvis Patten (27-7.3) hit a 2-run 2-out double in the top of the 9th and then scored a run that tied the game at 4 all. He had 4 hits on the day and scored twice. But in the bottom of the 9th, the Cowboys' 3B Erve More (25-4.5) led off by getting hit by a pitch from Davenport. C Gene Stone (27-5.4) had 2 hits with a home run and scored twice. 2B Jack Grossman (28-7.1) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI, but hurt his back in a collision on the base paths and will miss about 3 weeks.

Liberty League Games:
Boston (9) at Troy (8): Charlie Morlock (34-6.7) (6-1) over Harry Lamb (29-6.4) (5-3). All the scoring was done by the 7th. You would not have expected such a score with these 2 pitchers going. 24 hits and 18 errors in the game. RF Charlie Warner (30-9.2) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For the Haymakers, RF Jake Howard (25-4.6) hit 2 doubles, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Reports from the game say that their was a very stiff wind blowing.

Washington (11) at St. Louis (2): Dan Burton (28-4.9) (5-1) over Irv Goodwin (21-8.8) (3-5). Burton allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. Goodwin did not really pitch that poorly. He went 7 innings, before being replace by a pinch-hitter, allowing 8 hits, no walks and striking out 3. The Maroons made 10 errors behind him. 3B Sam Clark (33-4.7) had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

C Evan Eckberg (28-3.5), who seems to be mentioned in nearly every dispatch, had 2 hits, a walk, scored a run and had an RBI and threw out 3 of 4 base stealers. For the Spiders, ss Jesse Flanders (24-5.4) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year and had 2 RBIs.

Boston (5) at Troy (3): Joe Peters (28-4.9) (3-3) over John Bendickson (32-6.0) (2-4). Peters allowed 9 hits, walked 1 and struck out 9. Bendickson allowed 9 hits, walked 3 and struck out 7. C Wiley Fobes (33-2.5) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the season and 2nd in as many days. He had 2 RBIs.

New York (7) at Cincinnati (2): Jack Roberts (32-6.1) (6-4) over John Stevens (27-8.2) (3-5). Roberts allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 5. CF Hi Lynch (33-7.5) had 3 hits with a triple and his 2nd home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. SS Jimmy Mark (39-4.9) had a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Philadelphia Quakers (11-4 .733 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Grand National Association) at
Omaha Mutuals (8-7 .533 4 GB 6th place)

We begin a 3 game set against Philadelphia today. They beat us 2 out of 3 at their place to open the season. New manager Chuck Payne (42-5.9) has them playing very well, so far. They are 3rd in scoring at 5.9 runs per game (Omaha is dead last at 3.7). Only one batter in their lineup up today is hitting under .275 on the season. By contrast, only 1 player in the Omaha lineup is hitting better than .250. They are 4th in runs allowed at 3.9 per game (the Mutuals are 2nd at 3.4). They are the antithesis of the Stogies, preferring to generate runs with hits and have only stolen 5 bases on the season. The team with the second fewest has twice as many as them. They are the only team in the Association not to have allowed an opponent to hit a home run.

John Allen was born in Dublin, Ireland and was 27-15 for Rockville in the CSL (B) last year. He led the league in strikeouts. He finished 2nd in the Hurler Trophy race and if the 3rd place guy (Tom Lilly) handled us so easily, I shudder to think what the 2nd place guy is going to do to us. Well, I guess I know what he can do: he beat us 4 to 1, giving us 6 hits back on May 3 in his major league debut. I had forgotten about that....

John Allen, Phil. (25-6.4) (R 4-0 2.25 8.5-1.3-2.8 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lee Sprague, Omaha (24-3.5) (R 3-2 0.98 6.5-0.6-4.7)

Won - 7 to 4

Well, 2 things in the prologue to this game turned out to be irrelevant. 1) The Quakers had only stolen 5 bases before today. Against our Gold Glove catcher, they stole 3 and that led directly to their first 2 runs. 2) You'll hear about #2 in its proper place.

Sprague unaccountably got wilder than a wildcat in the 2nd inning, beaning 2 batters. They attempted a double steal and C Harry Farrell (32-5.6) threw the ball into left field, letting in a run. A single, one of only 4 hits allowed by Sprague on the day, promptly brought home the 2nd run.

Meanwhile, Allen was mowing down the Mutuals, retiring the first 11 batters he faced. In the 4th, we got back-to-back 2-out singles from 1B Lew Bartholomew (29-4.0) and LF Dave Cunningham (28-5.4) to put runners at the corners with Harry Farrell at the plate. Instead of getting a chance to see if Harry could come through in the pinch, Cunningham decided to try and steal second base and was thrown out and that was that.

In the Bottom of the 5th, we got another 2-out single, this one by RF Abe Cupp (23-4.7). He stole second and went to third on the catcher's error, but 2B Felix Hill (25-4.2) grounded out and that was that again.

In the bottom of the 6th, we finally scored a run when we got some hits before there were 2 outs. CF Stub Orlando (29-6.1) scored the run on a passed ball. 3B George Dominick (30-4.8) killed any chances we had for more by getting himself thrown out on a steal attempt.

In the bottom of the 7th, still down, 2 to 1, SS Warren Hogan (29-7.2) reached base on an error with 1 out and that brought up RF Abe Cupp and now it is the proper place to talk about the 2nd irrelevant point. 2) The Quakers are the only team in the Association to have not allowed a home run by the opposition. Cupp drilled the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his 2nd home run in as many days and gave us the lead at 3 to 2.

Allen seemed rattled after that and we ended up scoring 4 times in the 8th inning on 2 hits and 3 errors and a walk.

For the game, Sprague allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4 and beaned 3 (!!!) batters.

The hitting stars were 1B Lew Bartholomew with 3 safe knocks, one a double. He stole a base and scored a run. SS Warren Hogan only had 1 hit, but scored twice and had 2 RBIs. RF Abe Cupp had 2 hits, including the 2-run homer and stole a base.

Abe Cupp has now officially earned the status of everyday player. He will be in there come hail or high water, either in center or right.

Grand National Association Games:
Milwaukee (2) at Louisville (3): Ed Sharp (29-5.5) (3-5) over Tom Washam (31-6.1) (5-4). Sharp allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. Washam allowed 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 8. Unfortunately, one of those 3 hits was a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th to give Louisville the lead. The homerer was C George Wright (28-4.8), who had not hit a professional home run in his previous 4 years in the high minors.

Chicago (2) at Scranton (8): Sam Paul (29-5.4) (3-6) over John Ritch (29-7.8) (4-4). Paul allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 3. With his bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. C Doc Cole (35-6.1) had 3 hits, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

Brooklyn (2) at Baltimore (4): Sal DeVaux (29-3.5) (2-4) over Dick Cole (30-5.9) (4-4). DeVaux allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 5. Cole allowed 9 hits, walked none and struck out 4. LF Dan Mitchell (33-3.5) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Pittsburgh (4) at Minneapolis (7): Dan Dittmar (35-8.0) (6-2) over Frank Parsons (30-5.8) (2-4). Dittmar allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 1. He also had a hit and a walk and scored a run and knocked 1 in. SS Charlie Smith (26-5.6), the ex-Mutual, had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. He is batting .328 on the year and his fielding has been much better than it was for Omaha. Not great, but close to average. Ex-Haymaker 3B Bill Rush (35-3.7) had 2 doubles and scored 2 runs.

Providence (7) at Kansas City (6): Frank McSherry (28-4.1) (7-0) over Joe Osborne (26-3.0) (0-3). Rookie SS Pat Millis (23-7.2) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Hick Fahl (27-5.3) had 3 hits with a double and 2 RBIs.

Liberty League Games:
Cleveland (6) at Detroit (1): Jim Ludwig (24-4.6) (2-3) over William McLeod (25-5.6) (1-2). Ludwig allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. McLeod allowed 8 hits, walked 5 and struck out 6. Rookie 1B John Bradbury (23-7.6), a natural centerfielder, had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

Washington (2) at Troy (3): Miah Turner (23-5.3) (3-2) over John Callaham (35-5.5) (4-6). Turner allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2. He had a hit with his bat and drove in a run. Callaham allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4. With the scored tied at 2, C Pop Buck (30-5.2) led off the bottom of the 9th with a home run to win the game.

New York (6) at Cincinnati (5) in 10 innings: George Taylor (29-3.9) (3-3) over Charlie Branham (24-4.2) (4-3). Taylor went 9 innings, allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 4. Count Childs (28-3.1) set the Reds down in order with a strikeout in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the win. Branham pitched all 10 innings, allowed 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 10. Rookie LF Lorenzo Chappell (24-5.2) had 3 hits, including a triple in the top of the 10th to knock in the go-ahead run. He pulled a muscle legging out the triple, however, and will miss a week or two. I've said it before, triples are dangerous! Rookie C Fred Clapp (25-4.0) had 2 hits with a home run, a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Washington (7) at St. Louis (8): Freddy Wood (28-6.3) (2-1) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (5-2). Wood, in his first start in almost 3 weeks because of an injury, was not sharp. He allowed 12 hits, walked 1 and struck out 8. RF Pop Engleson (29-5.1) won the game in the bottom of the 9th with a 2-out single, his 2nd hit and 2nd RBI of the day. Manager/C Jake Houghton (33-5.4) had 4 hits with a double, scored 4 runs and had an RBI.

Egyptian Hooker (36-3.9) pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th, striking out a batter, to secure the win. Osborne allowed 11 hits, walked 3 and struck out 3. Guy Monaghan (35-5.3) pinch-hit for Ryther in the top of the 10th, drew a walk and ended scoring the go ahead run on an error, of which the Cowboys made 10 in the game.

We see one of the 4 expansion teams for the first time as we begin a 3 game series with Scranton, led by rookie manager John Cusick (43-7.5). They are 7th in the Association in scoring at 4.6 runs per game (Omaha is still 12th and dead last at 3.8). They are 8th in runs allowed at 5.8 per game (Omaha is 2nd at 3.2). Their RF Martin Griffin (33-6.3) is 2nd in the league in OBP and 1st in SLG and tied for 1st in HR. He's batting .306 with 3 HRs and 11 RBIs.

Sam Paul, Scran. (29-5.4) (R 3-6 1.65 9.8-0.6-4.1 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lee Sprague, Omaha (24-3.5) (R 5-2 1.27 5.8-0.7-4.9)


Through 5 innings, we had out-hit Scranton 8 to 1, but were losing 2 to 1, thanks to 2 errors by 3B George Dominick (30-4.8) and 3 of our runners being thrown out a the plate. Apoplexy is an appropriate word to my state of being.

In the bottom of the 6th, CF Abe Cupp (23-4.7) toed the game with a triple with a runner on. With only 1 out, however, we could not get Cupp to score.

In the bottom of the 7th, we had our 4th runner thrown out at the plate.

In the top of the 7th, Dominick made his 3rd error of the day, dropping a foul pop-up to start the inning. The batter, 2B Joe O'Neill (36-7.6) then proceeded to single to left, steal second, move to 3rd on a ground-out and score on a single by LF Jim Walker (27-7.6) to put the Miners back on top, 3 to 2.

In the bottom of the 9th, SS Warren Hogan (29-7.2) led things off by striking out. I sent Stub Orlando (29-6.1) in to hit for 2B Felix Hill (25-4.2) and he popped out to short. I sent Dave Cunningham (28-5.4), who was taking his first day off of the season in to hit for Sprague. He was 1 for 20 against Paul in his career, but he hit one over the fence in right-center to tie the game! That was his 2nd homer of the year. LF Spider Coleman (30-6.2) then scratched out an infield hit, but got thrown out trying to steal and we went to extra-innings.

I sent Tom Lee out to the pitcher's box and he retired them in order, striking out 2.

In the bottom of the 10th, Dominick singled to lead off the inning with his 4th hit of the day. He then stole 2nd and went to third on an error and scored the winning run on a passed ball!

Won - 4 to 3 in 10 innings

Sprague allowed 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5.

We out-hit the Miners 15 to 5.

LF Spider Coleman had 3 hits with a double. 3B George Dominick had 4 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. SS Warren Hogan had 2 hits.

O'Quinn went 2 innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 4. Yurkovich went 13 innings, allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 12. SS Jake Steitz (25-4.7) singled with 1-out to win the game. He had 3 hits on the day, stole 3 bases and scored a run. LF Dick Fitts (26-7.1) had 5 hits with a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. For the Colts, 2B Patsy Roberts (30-5.5) had 4 hits with a double and a triple, stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs.
