Because I am a Germany fan and I was away tutoring when the match was played

Well if I hadn't have used these copy protected discs (which I didn't know they were anyway), then I would have been able to burn you a copy.

No, I wouldn't have a clue how to do it. Nor would it be legal.

If you didn't mind some picture degradation, you could have it down-converted to VHS. Or if you really wanted it on DVD, then I could try to down-convert and then convert back to DVD.

Its only illegal if you attempt to try to sell it and I am afraid I have already asked to much...

I think if someone was playing around with a dvd of the 1966 World Cup final and by mistake hit the copy button and by total mistake placed a blank disc in their laptop and stumbled on the copy onto disc button then........................ by mistake dropped it and it ended up in an envelope and found it's way by mistake to the west coast

Funny how these coincidences work

As you know, I like messing around with numbers, and following on from the three year relegation average system used mainly in South America, I decided to see who, if anyone, would have been relegated from last season Premiership under this system, than the one season relegation.

Here is the table:
Code:
			2003/04	2004/05	2005/06	Total	Average
Chelsea 79/38	95/38	91/38	265/114	2.325
Arsenal 90/38	83/38	67/38	240/114	2.105
Manchester United	75/38	77/38	83/38	235/114	2.061
Liverpool 60/38	58/38	82/38	200/114	1.754
Bolton Wanderers	53/38	58/38	56/38	167/114	1.465
West Ham United -	-	55/38	55/38	1.447
Tottenham Hotspur	45/38	52/38	65/38	162/114	1.421
Newcastle United	56/38	44/38	58/38	158/114	1.386
Wigan Athletic -	-	51/38	51/38	1.342
Everton 39/38	61/38	50/38	150/114	1.316
Blackburn Rovers	44/38	42/38	63/38	149/114	1.307
Middlesbrough 48/38	55/38	45/38	148/114	1.298
Charlton Athletic	53/38	46/38	47/38	146/114	1.281
Aston Villa 56/38	47/38	42/38	145/114	1.272
Fulham 52/38	44/38	48/38	144/114	1.263
Manchester City 41/38	52/38	43/38	136/114	1.193
Birmingham City 50/38	45/38	34/38	129/114	1.132
Portsmouth 45/38	39/38	38/38	122/114	1.070	Relegated
West Bromwich Albion	-	34/38	30/38	64/76	0.842	Relegated
Sunderland -	-	15/38	15/38	0.395	Relegated
So there would have been one change - Portsmouth would have gone down instead of Birmingham City.

See the boo boys are out in Newcastle, Roeder was always going to be a knee jerk reaction as 99% of the time when a caretaker manager comes in the results improve and then when he takes over and the honeymoon period ends the results go south.

Anybody in their right mind knows that Roeder's track record as a manager is poor to say the least.

Gillingham - 13 wins in 51 games, finished 2nd from bottom only escaping the drop to the conference on the last day of the season.

Watford - Took over in 93/94, nearly got them into the play offs the following season but was sacked in 96 with the team in the relegation zone and were eventually relegated.

West Ham - Took over in 2001, in the 2002/03 season you guessed it they got relegated, close to the end of the season he had a brain tumour and regained his job when he was healthy but West Ham struggled in the Championship and he was sacked.

So before the Newcastle job he had 3 jobs and got two of the teams relegated and just by the skin of his teeth avoided the treble, yet some bright sparks in Toontown thought it was wise to give him the Newcastle job.

This is why Newcastle will never get anywhere, they are ran by a Chairman who has no idea what he is doing and appoints managers on a whim.

A mathematical equation that is also used to predict a team's record is of course Pythagoras' theorem.

Now soccer isn't the easiest of sports to use it with, because there are three results possible.
A way to get around that is to work out the average number of points per game.

So here is how the current Premier League table looks based on Pythagorean record:

Code:
			P	F	A	Pts	Pct.	Pyt. %	Exp. Pts.
Manchester United	11	26	5	28	0.848	0.943	28
Chelsea 10	17	5	25	0.833	0.889	24
Arsenal 9	16	5	18	0.667	0.878	22
Portsmouth 11	16	9	19	0.576	0.727	22
Everton 11	16	10	17	0.515	0.690	21
Aston Villa 10	12	9	15	0.500	0.620	17
Liverpool 11	14	12	17	0.515	0.565	17
Wigan Athletic 10	13	11	14	0.467	0.571	16
Bolton Wanderers	11	10	9	20	0.606	0.545	16
Fulham 11	12	15	16	0.485	0.406	12
Blackburn Rovers	10	10	13	12	0.400	0.390	11
Watford 11	9	13	9	0.273	0.349	11
Reading 11	10	17	13	0.394	0.289	9
Tottenham Hotspur	10	6	10	12	0.400	0.296	8
West Ham United 10	8	14	8	0.267	0.279	8
Middlesbrough 11	9	16	11	0.333	0.273	8
Manchester City 11	7	14	12	0.364	0.235	7
Newcastle United	11	7	14	8	0.242	0.235	7
Charlton Athletic	11	7	15	8	0.242	0.215	6
Sheffield United	11	5	14	9	0.273	0.148	4
(Things to note. 1 - the quotient I used in the formula is 1.7 (unlike the original 2.0) which is based off analysing winning margins for this season so far. And 2 - the expected points is based on the current points per game average of 2.745.)

Interesting thing to note is that Arsenal and Everton are the main underachievers (-4 points on the expected total), whilst Manchester City and Sheffield United are the biggest overachievers (+5 points on the expected).

Wont spoil it for anyone on tape delay but the West Ham v Arsenal game was a cracker, good old English football game even though Arsenal only had 1 Englishman in the starting 11.

I was actually following a matchtracker, it was quite upsetting.

could you give the full formula? and am I correct in assuming to find the expected point total you multiply the pyt. % by the number of points possible? If I am I think a few expected numbers are incorrect (Arsenal [23.7] and Chelsea [26.67], I havent checked anyone else).

No you don't. You multiply it by the average points per game, because not every game has three points up for grabs. I actually found that out from someone who did it for the NHL, by finding out there were 2.12 points awarded per game.
http://jesgolbez.blogspot.com/2005/0...00304-nhl.html

So you multiply the pyt. % by the points per game average for the league, and then multiply that by the number of games the team has played.

And the equation to find the pythagorean % is -

Goals Scored ^2
-------------------------------------
Goals Scored ^2 + Goals Conceded ^2

(obviously you can use the usual 2, or the found to be more precise 1.82 if you wish, instead of 1.7 as the quotient)

Dola, if you want to do it throughout the season, then ask and I can post the Excel worksheet that has the formulas already in. It will be a lot easier and less labour intensive than by hand.
