Jeannette cruises to 17-0
October 3rd, 1908
Joe Jeannette (17-0) scored a UD15 over #11 Mike Schreck (19-14) in a fight that was a mismatch from the opening bell. Jeannette landed several hard blows in the first and caused Schreck's left eye to swell. He then knocked the challenger down twice in the 4th, bloodied his nose in the 5th and dropped him again in the 13th. Jeannette landed 407 punches to Schreck's 180. I had the fight 148-135, so did ringside expert Tom Trunzo. On the undercard WW - George Cole (7-7-3) MD10 Joe Walcott (18-11-3) (Cole gets a nice win instead of underachieving like usual) FW - Ben Jordan (9-1-2) UD10 Sammy Kelly (8-5) (Jordan avenged his only loss) HW - Marvin Hart (15-13-3) MD10 John Haines (13-16-2) LW - Mike Leonard (8-0-3) UD8 James Curran (5-3) (both fighters at pre for this club fight, Leonard moves to the main class) FW - Billy Whistler (7-13-5) DRAW10 Joe Cain (0-12-1) (club fight) |

O'Brien wins the unified LHW title
October 7, 1908
LBC champ Jack O'Brien (21-3-1) scored an easy boring UD15 over LBA champ John Donaldson (11-7) to win the unified LHW title. No cuts, no swelling, no knockdowns ... boring technical bout. I had it 147-140. Scott Lang, ringside, had it 147-141. The official judges had it 147-141/146-141/145-142 On the undercard LW - Young Erne (9-2) UD10 Jack Blackburn (19-10-4) FW - Benny Soloman (9-1-2) UD10 Kid Broad (10-6) WW - Young Loughrey (6-3-1) MD8 Matty Baldwin (7-1) (both at pre for this club fight) LW - Barney Donovan (14-18-2) UD8 Johnny Frayne (6-5) (Frayne at pre for this club fight) BW - Danny Dougherty (11-13) UD10 Dennis McFadden (7-12-1)(club fight) |

I certainly have more than my share, but considering I use 1pt/round scoring and increased about 1/3 of the judges bias toward even rounds, I guess I can expect as much. I've had a couple of fighters in the Club ranks draw four fights in a row! |

McAuliffe defends LBC portion of the title
October 11, 1908
Unified LW champ Jack McAuliffe (27-5-2) scored a UD15 over #5 Harry Lyons (25-13-1) for his first defense of the LBC lightweight title. McAuliffe dominated this bout from the opening bell and beat Lyons at his own defensive boxing game. Fairly boring fight with no knockdowns, cuts or swelling. McAuliffe didn't lose a round after the 5th. I had it 148-138. Darryl Woodford ringside had it 149-138. The official judges had it 147-139/148-139/148-138. On the undercard (the LW/HW show) LW - Austin Gibbons (17-16-2) UD10 Jem Carney (18-15) (Gibbons continues his resurrection with his 7th win in 8 bouts) HW - George Gardner (17-9-2) UD10 William Miller (12-14-3) HW - Dick Matthews (9-2) KO1 Billy Wilson (13-16-1) LW - Jack Keenan (5-1-1) DRAW8 Paddy Smith (7-1-1) (both fighters at PP for this club fight) HW - Herbert Slade (14-15-2) SD10 Denver Ed Smith (13-18-2) (club fight) |

Ryan hits the canvas but dominates anyway
October 23, 1908
Tommy Ryan (34-0-1) got up from a third round knockdown and went on to score a TKO15 over #10 Jack Bonner (18-16-1) for his 4th defense of the LBA Middleweight crown. Ryan came out strong winning the first two rounds, but got caught with a solid shot early in the 3rd and went down. Bonner wasted alot of energy trying to end the fight right there and wasn't the same afterwards. Ryan went on to win the 4th, 5th and 6th. The 6th round was scored 10-8 without a KD because it was so one-sided. Ryan rested in the 7th and lost the round, but then won out. He knocked down Bonner in the 11th and twice in the 15th before the ref stopped the fight. I had it 137-126 at the time of the stoppage. Shane MacLeod had it 135-130 (not sure what fight he was watching). The official judges had it 136-127/137-128/136-127. On the undercard FW - George Dixon (25-7) UD10 Tommy White (8-4-2) (Dixon stepped up to FW for the win) MW - Kid Graves (12-1-1) UD10 Arthur Cripps (7-8) (Graves stepped up to MW for the win) HW - Frank Childs (18-14-4) UD10 Jim McCormick (8-1) FW - George Moore (5-4-1) DRAW8 Joe Reilly (4-3-2) (both fighters a pp for this club fight) WW - Billy Gardner (7-16-3) SD10 Billy Devine (4-17-3) (club fight) |

Bob McAllister goes to 5-0
November 6, 1908
Bob McAllister scores an easy TKO2 over TC Guisseppe Pavese to run his record to 5-0 (2). With this win he moves to pre-prime and up to the club division. |

Does this mean the Nuns and Orphans tour is over for Bob?
I hear there's an odd looking guy near Bangkok that may be ripe for the picking - he has an eyebrow just begging for a McAllister jab.

November 1908, beginners
The beginners dominated this month going 44-3-6. Several fighters moved up as they are coming up on the end of their first year. I don't believe any fighters who were starters in the beginner division (4/07) are still left.
Moving to club HW - Victor Mclaglen (5-1) lhw - Bob McAllister (5-0) MW - Jim Carr (5-0-1), Jeff Clarke (5-0), Ned McCann (5-0), Martin Mulverhill (5-2-1), Jimmy Murray (5-0) WW - Waldemar Holberg (5-0), Jack O'Keefe (5-0-1) LW - Joe Heiser (5-0), Dick Hyland (5-0), Jack Hopper (5-0), George Keys (5-0), Frank Steele (5-0) BW - Tom Cassiday (5-0), Harry Harris (5-0), Barney McCall (5-1) FLY- Joe Gates (5-0) |

Without looking I believe there were a couple of 9's and a couple 8's and 7's in that list.
McAlister will be good as long as he avoids Jack Dillon for as long as possible. 3 good up and comers in the LHW division if you add in Carpentier. |

November 1908 title fights
3 title fights this month including another unification bout. A whopping 246 fighters in action this month including the 53 beginners.
WW - (LBC) Peter Jackson (18-3) vs #6 Kyle Whitney (12-2-2) FW - (UT) (LBA) Jem Driscoll (29-5) vs (LBC) Aurelio Herrera (13-6) (Driscoll won by TKO4 in their first meeting in 10/04) BW - (LBC) Johnny Coulon (18-2) vs #2 Owen Moran (22-5-4) (Moran scored a KO5 in 01/07 to win the first LBC belt) I have a bad feeling that this is the last hurrah for Herrera. Driscoll might be too good and there is a crop of good FW's on the horizon, like Kilbane, McCarthy and Yanger. |

Well it's time to skip ahead 3 months ... it appears this thread lost about 2500 posts .... luckily my universe thread is more of a reporting thread than a storyline thread so I will just go on with the reporting of fights. Currently nearing the end of April 1909.
I will post a rankings update at the end of the month. Plus I have 3 or 4 fight cards to type up. It's too bad we lost the months but I'm just glad to have the board back. |
