AUSTIN, Texas -- Amid the lights, video boards, shooting sparklers and other elaborate props that are commonplace on stage at a rock concert stands a quiet and very tall figure, dressed in blue jeans and an unassuming T-shirt, holding a camera. He needs to be close to action, but he also has to stay out of the way of the main attraction, all the while capturing the poignant moments that will eventually document this particular moment in the band's history.

He slithers on the ground like a snake, looking for the perfect shot. He does this while remaining relatively unnoticed by more than 13,000 fans who have gathered at this Austin amphitheater, site of yet another performance by the legendary band Rush, currently on tour and celebrating its 40th year together.

Why are we talking about the band's photographer? Well, for one, he's about a foot taller than an average-sized man, making it a little extra challenging to be invisible.

And he happens to be one of the greatest left-handed pitchers in Major League history. He's Randy Johnson, a veteran of 22 Major League seasons, winner of five Cy Young Awards, member of the newest Hall of Fame class that will be inducted into Cooperstown on July 26 … and a professional photographer.

"I've learned how to be a 6-foot-10 ninja," Johnson said a couple hours before Rush began its nearly three-hour set. - mlb.com, by Alyson Footer, May 22, 2015

The facegen wasn't bad but I'm going through all of them and figured I could redo it as he seemed a bit on the yellow side on my monitor... He's in the pack so don't think I do only cup o'coffee guys (though they need the most attention) ... I didn't smooth him out any. ... and I really wanted to write the narrative blurb...
so much better then any other version.

Fred Dunlap

"Fred Dunlap was at one time . . . the best second baseman in the country..." - Ned Hanlon, quoted in Sporting Life, Sept. 11, 1897

Nicknamed "Sure Shot" because of his powerful arm, Fred Dunlap twice hit over .300 for the Cleveland Blues in the early 1880s. He was lured to the St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association in 1884, becoming the highest-paid player in baseball at the time. He led the league with a .412 average, 160 runs, and 13 homers, as the Maroons won the league's first (and only) pennant. After the Union Association folded, Dunlap returned to the National League but never again put up big numbers. However, he continued to be an above-average offensive player for several more years, and ended his major league career with an OPS+ of 134. Even looking at just the National League seasons, he had a career OPS+ of 120.

His died in 1902 at age 43. His obituary in Sporting Life said he and Fred Pfeffer were the star second basemen of the profession during his time. He came from the "downtown lots" of Philadelphia into pro ball. After baseball, he chose "to follow the racing game", and Sporting Life said that caused him to lose the fortune he had accumulated in baseball. His last couple of years were spent in poverty. His funeral was patched together by a few former teammates, but it was apparently a pathetic farewell for the old ballplayer. “There were not enough friends of Dunlap at his funeral to bury him,” one attendee said, “and we had to call on the [taxi] drivers to make up the list of active pall-bearers.” - bRef Bullpen wiki & helmarblog.com

I know there is a single picture of him without a mustache... but he played with a mustache. Every other picture I can find shows the mustache.... so I redid the facegen with his mustache intact. This is a new one but will be in next month's pack if you want to just grab all the new ones in the monthly updates.

Harry W Taylor (1932)

Harry Taylor was a first baseman for 16 years (1928-1943), all in the minors except for a cup of coffee in the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1932.

Taylor was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 14, 1932, with the Chicago Cubs. He played for the Cubs in ten games with eight at bats, a run, a walk and a strikeout but only one game at first base with five putouts. He played his final major league game on May 28. In 1937, his best year in the minors, he had 12 home runs and 83 RBI at .283. Overall, in the minors, he had 68 home runs and 820 RBI.

Taylor served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. For 14 years he was a checker for the Lakefront Dock Company and for six years a personnel manager for Toledo Steel Products Company. He passed away in 1969 at the age of 61.

An off-the-board request and based on the "before" from the CUF pack, I can see why. I found a closed mouth picture on ebay and used that. Definitely needed the 3.5 version of the software to smooth him out as there were some odd discolorations from the lighting. But better than before

LansdowneSt 6 November Supplemental Facegen Pack updated

Well, the World Series is over and I'm due to post another round of facegen updates via my Mediafire download site. Here it is via the link below (and my signature block link will also get you there). It's always the same link, I just swap the files out. Some of the 238 new MLB'ers and 17 MiLB'ers have had their facegen files posted on either this thread or on my personal thread. As for the rest, I just didn't have them time to do individual posts. Here are some examples of the new facegens plus the stats of where I stand on my checklist. More examples are on my thread if you like to see the before and afters.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/ox6gx..._Pack.zip/file

Here are some additional before and afters (more on the CUF thread too). I'm pleased I am over 15% on the playerrs that have debuted in the '70's and '80s. Overall, I have redone 21% of all the players that debuted from 1970 forward. Little by little moving forward to check facegens off my list. FancySkunk has been off-line since June but that's why I do these supplements... so you don't have to wait for new ones and what I deem to be improvements. Thx!

Jack Leary (1880-1884)

Jack Leary played for seven teams in three leagues during his five-year major league career. He appeared at every position except catcher. As a hitter, his .287 batting average was tenth in the league in 1882. As a pitcher, he was not very successful except during his half-season with Baltimore in 1882 when he posted an ERA of 1.38 in 26 innings. He played a lot of games at shortstop and third base, which is unusual for a left-handed thrower. His minor league career ran from at least 1877-87. In 1885 he was suspended after going on a "spree", but reinstated on condition that he be totally abstinent the rest of the season. - bRef Bullpen wiki

actionjackson had seen some of these old (hated) placeholder faces in his Random Debut and I asked for a challenge. He picked Jack Leary as one for me to go hunt for and do. Fortunately, this past June, Chickazoola found Jack in an Augusta newspaper team photo associated with an article looking back on the 1885 team. That photo allowed me to try and reconstruct a facegen for him. I used the midjourney art AI and told it to use the newspaper photo as a starter but to make it a photo for me. After several iterations, I settled on the photo shown. Once I had that image as a facegen starting point I (as always) tried to sculpt a facegen based on the original file (the newspaper in this case). For those unaware of the midjourney AI tool, it's a blast as discussed on this thread...

Awesome! It's one of the guy I never found a picture of when I redid the 19th century earlier this year... Thanks for your hard works!

That software you used looks amazing... wonder what it would do with pictures like this who are just drawing.

Well, I'm off Friday. Give me their respective names and we'll find out what kind of starting point it can give us for some of those hard-to-do 19th c. facegens...

They are guys I picked from my thread...

Frank Jones
Al Strueve
Fred Mauer
William (Tony) Madigan
Ed Flynn

There are more if the software can produce a photography alike image for them that you could add to your certainly long to do list from that era (from your last to do list all those years were under 10% done). No hurry I was just curious of what that AI could do after I saw that amazing work it did with Jack Leary.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Al Strueve

Al Strueve played two games for the St. Louis Browns of the American Association in 1884, one at catcher and the other in the outfield. He went 2 for 7 with 2 runs scored. - bRef Bullpen wiki

I used the AI to generate several photos based off the sketch so as to get me something close to work with. Here's the photo I settled on though there were several very similar. The sketch was more scrunched with a wide rounded chin, so I made adjustments from the photo rendering. Again, the image the AI translates the sketch to is just to get one close enough to work the facegen sliders and get ya there as best one can. The goal isn't to look like the photo ... it's to look like the sketch.

Ed Flynn

". . . it is safe to say there will be no team in Pueblo this season. This, in turn, will throw some fine material on the base ball market, among whom may be mentioned Ed Flynn, our excellent catcher and second baseman and the hitter of the team, who is wintering in Pueblo . . ." - Sporting Life's Pueblo correspondent, Feb. 24, 1886 - bRef Bullpen wiki

With no Pueblo team, Ed headed to Cleveland where he played seven games for the blues going 5 for 27 and mustering a 23 OPS+.

Same deal with Ed. Made a couple dozen photos and chose one that gave me his features and that facegen liked. He has a heavier set face and a wider shallower chin than the photo so (obviously) I tried to align with the sketch.

Just amazing...

nice to see that my FGs aren't too far from the AI assisted results (at least for Strueve) but it lose the small flaws because I didn't want to clean too much and end with a fake 300b file.
