Allen Richter former Red Sox passed away at the age of 90 RIP

"Allen was a proud graduate of Maury High School, where he was an all-time baseball and basketball star. He was signed by the Boston Red Sox Organization as a star shortstop straight out of high school, but postponed his career to serve in the Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1947 in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Allen reported to the Red Sox in 1947, determined to simultaneously complete his college education in the off-season. Allen attended V.P.I. (Virginia Tech) in 1947, and graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami in 1953.

Over the course of Allen's baseball career, he played shortstop with Louisville, Boston, San Diego and, finally, with the St. Louis Cardinals in Rochester, NY. In 1951, after batting .321 in Louisville, Allen received the minor league all-star shortstop of the year award from Look Magazine. He stood alongside Ted Williams and Dom DiMaggio at Fenway Park to receive the award".

Al Richter

A nice portrait shot, courtesy of the Jewish Baseball Museum, and a minor league "panel card" taken from eBay. The "panel card" image was the one used on Al's "Jewish Major Leaguers" card.

Bob Ross #100 on Wikipedia's Oldest living players list

Bob Ross, a 1950s Washoington Senators and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher. is now ranked #100 on the oldest living major leaguers list by Wikipedia and he turns 89 today. His photo is in this thread on page 21 - section 407. His photo is the 3rd of 5 Phillies pictured in that section and is the only smaller photo in that section.

Wikipedia List reaches end of 1920s and start of 1930s.

The Wikipedia Oldest Living Players list contains two sections: the main section (#s 1 -100) and the supplementary list (#101- variable ). Currently they choose to list players up to #125. For the two current bottom spots at #124 they reach the last living player born in the 1920s - pitcher, Ray Herbert (birthdate: 12/15/1929) and at #125 the list reaches the first living player born in the 1930s - pitcher Joe Margoneri (birthdate: 1/13/1930). Herbert had a long career (1950-1966) going 104-107 lifetime in a career that included one all-star and one 20 win season (both in 1962). Margoneri pitched just two years in the majors for the final two Giants teams in New York (1956-1957), going 7-7.
Baseball cards:
Herbert - Topps 1966.
Margoneri - Topps 1957.
There are currently 5 living players who were born before 1920 - 3 born in 1918 and 2 born in 1919.
Then there are 119 living players born in the 1920s (#s 6-124).
Then # 125, Joe Margoneri, leads off the 1930s.

Congratulations Houston Astros!!

Don Prince 79 a former Chicago Cub passed away

Very Odd story. Prince served nearly 20 years in jail for attempting to hire a hit man to murder two business associates. Thankfully, the supposed "hit man" was an undercover agent.
