The batting was solid during the month to score 73 runs. The star with the hot bat during the month was Third Baseman Mike Dorgan. Dorgan started 13 games with 51 at bats. These at bats saw him gain an average of .431 after hitting the ball 22 times. He also scored 5 runs with 9 RBI's. The NL Voters decided that these figures were the best for the month so awarded him the NL Batter of the Month award.

He started 7 games and won 5. He pitched 63 innings and gave up 63 hits along with 14 earned runs for an ERA of 2.00. He was voted the NL Pitcher of the Month. The team gave up 65 runs in total.

It just isn't Second Baseman Jack Farrell's year. He returned from a fractured finger early to mid August only to be returned to the injury list at the end of the month after fracturing his skull in a collision. His season is now over as he will be out for 6 months.

Catcher Jack Clapp returned from injury mid month.

Catcher Bill Phillips picked up a quadricep strain early in the month. He was diagnosed with a recovery time of 5 weeks.

The angry faces in the crowd told the whole story as they watched their sides end of season slump continue in September. The team could only manage 3 wins during September while losing 10. This has seen them fall to dead last in the NL table a full 10 games behind the leaders and 3 games behind third place. It looks like the team could be occupying the bottom spot for the seventh time in ten seasons.

The Owner didn't waste time once the team reached this point and fired Manager Aaron Compton. The side have still to appoint a new Manager but we will let you know who that is once it has been confirmed by the team.

The batting was poor in September, scoring only 52 runs during the month. The star with the hot bat was First Baseman Oscar Walker. Walker started 12 of the 13 games he played with 50 at bats. These at bats saw him claim 19 hits to score 9 runs with 7 RBI's. His average during the month was .380.

The workload of the season finally caught up with the pitching staff as they had a horrible month. The best of the starters was The Only Nolan. He won 2 of the 7 games he started and pitched 61.2 innings. These innings saw him give up 62 hits and 21 earned runs for an ERA of 3.06

Left Fielder Joe Hornung missed the second half of the month with a sore shoulder. He was diagnosed with a 2-3 weeks recovery time.

The Atlantics made a roster move during the month to try and find players to help the ailing team next season. They traded 22 year old minor league Centre Fielder John Magner and 22 year old Centre Fielder Tom Loftus to the St Louis Brown Stockings in exchange for 31 year old First Baseman Jim Foran. Foran is a solid starter and can still put up the numbers but the fans are unsure the team should be going for experience as he is the wrong side of 30 and will only get worse as he ages.

A big part of this strong second half of the season has been the form of starter Jim Britt. This can be seen by the fact that September saw him extend his record breaking win total up to 250 games. He now has 53 more wins than any other pitcher active or retired and he doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. September saw him pitch 6 games for 4 wins. This included giving up 55 hits and 10 earned runs for an ERA of 1.69. The team gave up 63 runs during the month.

The batting put up a solid performance in September to score 74 runs. While the team scored a lot of runs the hits were harder to come by. The fans of the Brown Stockings have resigned themselves to finish bottom of the AL table this year after some poor performances. September was no different as the team won 6 out of 13 games. They now sit 4 games behind 3rd place in the AL table.

The batting was up and down all month while scoring 62 runs. The star with the bat was Catcher Pop Snyder. Snyder started 5 of the 6 games he played once returning from injury. He claimed 13 hits from the 24 at bats in these games to score 7 runs and 9 RBI's for an average of .542. This earned him the AL Batter of the Month award.

Sam Weaver was again the best of a mixed bag on the mound. He started 7 games and picked up 4 wins with 64 innings pitched. He gave up 48 hits and 10 earned runs for an ERA of 1.41. The team gave up a total of 62 runs.

The team decided that they needed fresh blood in the side and placed 31 year old First Baseman Jim Foran on waivers. This led to him being traded to the Brooklyn Atlantics in exchange for 22 year old minor league Centre Fielder John Magner and 22 year old Centre Fielder Tom Loftus. The fans are not sure how this will work for the team but hope these 2 prospect can turn into future stars for the team.

Short Stop Tom Barlow and Catcher Pop Snyder both returned from injury during the month.

Second Baseman Tom Carey will finish the season on the treatment table as he strained his back at the end of the month and will miss 2 weeks.

The fans of the Orioles never saw their team in contention to retain their AL pennant this year. The team struggled early in the season to get going. They were well behind come the All Star Break and it was only strong months in July and August that pulled them up to the position of 3rd in the AL table. The fans will be looking for a better start to the season next year if the team are to move back to the top of the standings.

The final four games of the season saw them lose 2-5 against the St Louid Brown Stockings followed by a 1-2 series loss on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 3-4, 2-4 and 4-1. Jack Manning tore a hip flexor tendon during these games and will be on the treatment table for between 5 and 6 weeks.

The pitching this year was steady for the most part with solid ERA's. The best of the starters was Frank Hankinson. Hankinson, who is in his second year in the league, started 39 of the 84 games and pitched 330.2 innings for 18 wins. He gave up 331 hits and 100 earned runs for an ERA of 2.72

The batting had its good and bad months during the year as they struggled to find consistent form. It is difficult to find a player that shone with the bat during the whole season. If we had to select someone it would probably be Short Stop Jacob Doyle. Doyle joined the club in Early July through a trade with the Brooklyn Atlantics. His time in an Orioles Jersey saw him start 35 games and claim 33 hits from 113 at bats. This gave him an average of .292 for the time with the Orioles. Slightly below his season average of .299. He also scored 17 runs and 8 RBI's for the Orioles.

The fans of the Red Caps have had that gloomy look of losers all year. Their team put up a poor showing on the year to finish in joint 3rd place in the NL table. They did get closer to the winning White Stockings than was expected earlier in the year at 8.5 games but it was still not what the fans wanted or expected from their team after the previous seasons near miss for the pennant. It seems that the team started in poor form and this never really improved until August and September when it was to late to matter.

The team finished the year poorly as well as they lost all 4 games in October. They went down 4-5 at home to the Brooklyn Atlantics before being swept 0-3 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings 3-6, 6-12 and 4-7

The pitching was a mixed bag all season for the team. The best came in the form of Starter Tommy Bond. Bond has been with the club 6 years now and has been a starter for the last 3. This year he started 42 of the 84 games and picked up 22 wins. He pitched 364.1 innings to give up 417 hits and 109 earned runs for an ERA of 2.69

The batting also had up and down form all year. The best of the starters was Centre Fielder Charley Jones. Jones, a 5 year veteran, started all 84 games during the season. This saw him bat 350 times to hit 100 balls into open play. He scored 52 runs and had 40 RBI's for an average of .314.

The fans of the Atlantics are again showing their frustrations and anger at not getting above the last place in the NL table. The team started the season in good form and gave the fans some hope that it was going to be a better year than normal. This then unravelled in August and September as they picked up only 8 wins during the 2 months. This poor second half of the season saw the team finish joint 3rd 8.5 games off the eventual winners. The fans will again hope the off season will bring a change in fortunes for their team.

One change that did happen was the signing of Manager Coy Garrison. Garrison has spent the whole of his career as a minor league manager and the fans will hope he can bring a spark to the team.

If October's 4 games are anything to go by then he may just do that. The team won 3 out of the 4 including a 5-4 road trip win at the Boston Red Caps and 2-1 road trip win at the Cincinnati Reds 10-2, 13-15 and 9-3

The pitching for the year was at best average during the season. The best of the starters was The Only Nolan. Nolan, who is a second year veteran, had a solid year as hit pitched 350.2 innings in 41 starts for 20 wins. He gave up 345 hits and 93 earned runs for an ERA of 2.39

The batting was a real struggle all season as the hits were tough to come by. The batter that had the best form during the season was First Baseman Oscar Walker. Walker, who is in his 3rd year on the Atlantics roster, started 70 of the 75 games he played. This led him to have 303 at bats in which he gleaned 89 hits for 39 runs and 33 RBI's His average for the year was .294.

The fans of the White Stockings are celebrating again as their team managed another successful late pennant charge. The team won its 6th pennant in 8 years after a 1 game play off against the Cincinnati Reds. The season was panning out to be a solid year without troubling the pennant race until they had their now usual surge of wins from late August to the end of the season. The team won 15 of their last 19 games to clinch the top spot in the NL and book a date to play in the MLB Championship Series against the Al's Cleveland Blues.

The team finished the season with 5 wins in October. They started the month by beating the Cincinnati Reds 10-9 on the road. This was followed by a 3-0 sweep of the Boston Red Caps at home 6-3, 12-6 and 7-4. They then won the NL play off game 9-1 at home to the Cincinnati Reds.

While both starters contributed to the White Stockings wins column there is only 1 star in the rotation. That star is Jim Britt. Britt, now an 8 year veteran at only 23, had another season he can be proud of. He started 43 games and pitched 392 innings to pick up 20 wins. He gave up 415 hits and 86 earned runs for an ERA of 1.97. The wins this year saw him pass the 250 mark in his career. This is by far the best in the MLB and will probably see him into the hall of fame once he retires.

The batting didn't come to life until towards the end of the season. The best from the major starters was Short Stop Jack Glasscock. Rookie Glasscock forced his way into the line up during the season to start 58 games of the 64 he played. He claimed 75 hits from the 261 at bats he had. This led him to score 44 runs with 30 RBI's and an average of .287.

Even saying this Glasscock is likely to miss most if not all of the MLB Championship Series after picking up an injury in the final games that will keep him out for 2 weeks.

The Reds fans are ruing the bad form the team showed at the end of the season as they saw their team miss out on the NL pennant and a play off place by the slimmest of margins. The team lost the NL pennant in a 1 game play off against the Chicago White Stockings after failing to win the needed games in October. Over all their season was one of excellent play as they led the division from the start. It was only their late loss of form and the White Stockings sudden surge of wins that denied them the title.

The team played their final games in October and only managed a solitary win. They lost 9-10 at home to the Chicago White Stockings. This was followed by a 1-2 series loss at home to the Broooklyn Atlantics 2-10, 15-13 and 3-9. They then finished the month by losing the play off game 1-9 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings.

The pitching during the year has been spread around 4 players as both starters on the opening day saw time on the treatment table. The best starter during the season was Monte Ward. Ward, a second year veteran, started 37 games and pitched 282 innings on his way to 14 wins. He gave up 314 hits and 77 earned runs for an ERA of 2.46

The batting was probably the stronger of the 2 units during the season and was the reason the Reds got so close to the pennant. The batter who gained the best figures during the year was First Baseman John Clapp. Clapp has been with the team for 8 years and had his best season for some time. He started 79 of the games and came to the plate 358 times. He claimed 116 hits from these at bats to score 56 runs and 33 RBI's for an average of .324

This .324 batting average earned Clapp the NL batting title for 1879.

8th October 1879

What a difference a successful team can make to the mood of a city. Cleveland has been all smiles and cheers all year as the Blues forgot the last 8 years of indifferent ball play and put on a show for their fans this year. This play was good enough all year to see the team clinch its first AL pennnant in 9 attempts. The pennant was won early in the season as the team got off to a fast start. April and May saw the team lose only 9 out of 28 games. After this the team played just above average ball which was enough to see them win the AL title and progress to their first MLB Championship Series. They will face the NL's Chicago White Stockings in that Championship Series.

The October games saw the team win 6-3 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics followed by a 2-1 series win against the St Louis Brown Stockings 6-3, 4-3 and 10-12

The pitching put up a solid showing all season as both starters managed to record 20 win seasons. The best of the 2 starters was 3rd year starter Will White. White started 42 games and pitched 361.1 innings for 25 wins. He gave up 346 hits and 86 earned runs for an ERA of 2.14

While the pitching played solidly the batting still had its ups and down during the season. This year it just managed more ups than downs. The best came in the form of Third Baseman Mike Burke. Rookie Burke managed to force his way into the managers thoughts as he played 47 games with 45 as starter. He had 177 at bats that produced 53 hits along with 23 runs and 23 RBI's for an average of .299
