July 9th, 1957, Milwaukee County Stadium, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Young Star Helps Propel AL to Win in Midseason Classic Lou Skizas said the annual all-star game is mostly for the fans to enjoy, but the players have a lot of fun, too. "It's a great time to get that much talent on one ball diamond," he said. "You feel fortunate to even be part of it." 1957 World Series results
1957 World Series: Baltimore Orioles vs. Cincinnati Redlegs
Results Game 1, October 2nd, 1957, Memorial Stadium, Baltimore Road Win Lifts Cincinnati to 1-0 Lead in WS Tom Sturdivant saved his best stuff for the biggest stage of them all. In Game 1 of the World Series, the Cincinnati Redlegs right-hander pitched a beauty, leading his club past the Baltimore Orioles, 3-2. Sturdivant threw 9.0 innings of 3-hit ball in the win at Memorial Stadium. With it, Cincinnati takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Cincinnati used a clutch at-bat from Nellie Fox to capture the win. The second baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Redlegs ahead, 3-2. It was his lone hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a humdinger. "The other side played a good game," said Baltimore manager Pete Lapan. "You tip your cap to them." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Redlegs lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 3rd, 1957, Memorial Stadium, Baltimore Cincinnati Tops Baltimore Again, 4-2 Art Ditmar pitched a gem to lead the Cincinnati Redlegs to victory, 4-2, over the Baltimore Orioles in Game 2 of the World Series. The right-handed Ditmar came in in relief and pitched to 18 batters in the win, which gave the Redlegs a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Billy Klaus, who finished 5th in the NL in stolen bases with 17 in 1955, had a direct impact on the outcome. Klaus contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning to put Cincinnati up, 3-2. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Redlegs manager Jimmy Uchrinscko said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played on October 5th, 1957 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Redlegs lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 5th, 1957, Crosley Field, Cincinnati Cincinnati Wins at Home to Take 3-0 Lead in WS The Cincinnati Redlegs are one game away from a sweep after slipping past the Baltimore Orioles, 2-1, in a low-scoring contest at Crosley Field. Leading the way for the Redlegs was right-hander Don Drysdale. He threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. Cincinnati now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series. Drysdale delivered a quality start for Cincinnati. The 6-foot-6 right-hander allowed 1 earned run on 7 hits over 9 innings of work. "Don executed his pitches at a high level," said Cincinnati manager Jimmy Uchrinscko. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Redlegs lead series 3-0 Game 4, October 5th, 1957, Crosley Field, Cincinnati Redlegs Hammered by Robinson, Drop Game 4 to Orioles On the verge of being swept and facing a red-hot Cincinnati Redlegs team, the Baltimore Orioles had a tough assignment. Frank Robinson delivered. The Orioles left fielder was unstoppable for the visitors, as he went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once in guiding his club to its first victory of the series, 5-3. Robinson, 22, earned accolades for his efforts. The win means Baltimore now trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. A key moment came with two out in the top of the ninth. That's when Robinson hit a curveball from Bill Kennedy for a run-scoring double, putting Baltimore up, 5-3. "We're one game closer to our goal," Baltimore manager Pete Lapan said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Redlegs lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 7th, 1957, Crosley Field, Cincinnati Jensen, Orioles Wallop Redlegs in Game 5 of WS The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Cincinnati Redlegs, 10-1, in 12 innings in Game 5 of the World Series. Making an impact was right fielder Jackie Jensen, who went 2-5 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while adding 3 RBIs and scoring twice. The win narrows Baltimore's deficit in the series to 3-2. In the top of the 12th, Jensen hit a tie-breaking solo home run to help the Orioles capture the win. "I like our resilience," said Jensen. Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Redlegs lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 9th, 1957, Memorial Stadium, Baltimore Raucous Memorial Stadium Crowd Propels Orioles to 5-2 Victory; Series Tied at 3 The Baltimore Orioles and the Cincinnati Redlegs will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation, the Orioles beat the Redlegs, 5-2, at Memorial Stadium to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Baltimore right-hander Don Cardwell had a big role in the win. He threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. Cardwell was in the zone all game. He frustrated Cincinnati hitters while giving the Orioles 9 innings of quality work. Cardwell threw 139 pitches, allowing 7 hits and getting 7 punchouts. "Don just settled in and did what he does," said Baltimore manager Pete Lapan. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Series tied 3-3 Game 7, October 10th, 1957, Memorial Stadium, Baltimore Redlegs Win 1957 World Series The Cincinnati Redlegs ignited a huge celebration as they beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 to win the World Series. Cincinnati won the series 4-3, capturing the title for the 1st time. "We stepped it up at the right time, and now we're the champs," said Cincinnati manager Jimmy Uchrinscko. "It's a great feeling." The champs finished the regular season 90-64 and claimed first place in the NL. In the jubilant clubhouse after the decisive game, series MVP and center fielder Bill Bruton said the Redlegs have "great fans and they deserve this." "I am so happy for our city right now," he said. Redlegs win series 4-3 World Series MVP: CF Bill Bruton (Cincinnati Redlegs) (And, with that, now every team has won a World Series title in this sim. The Chicago Cubs have the most with 9 World Series titles, while the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates are tied for second at 8...) Last edited by Lord Byron; 06-11-2024 at 12:23 AM. |

1958 All-Star Game results...
July 8th, 1958, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles
NL Defeats AL, 8-6, in Tight All-Star Game Dick Groat cemented his status as one of the best in the game with his performance tonight. "It's an honor to even be invited to the game. To be rewarded as the MVP of the game is extra special," the NL star said after his great showing. "Just playing on the same diamond as some of these guys is a pure treat." In the game itself, Dick Groat certainly wasn't the only great player out there, but he did enough in the NL's 8-6 win over the AL All-Stars. All-Star Game MVP: SSP Dick Groat (Los Angeles Dodgers) |
